  • This study is to observe species identification and early life history of Korean endemic species of Tanakia latimarginata and to use it as a basis for taxonomic studies. As a result of morphological identification, a dark band appeared at the margin of the anal fin, and the ovipositor color of the female was light orange. The shape of the egg was fusiform and sticky. The egg size (long${\times}$short diameter) averaged $4.41{\times}1.44mm$. The incubation time was 126 hours after the fertilization at an average water temperature of $21.0^{\circ}C$. Immediately after hatching, the larvae had egg yolk at an average total length of $5.91{\pm}0.18mm$ (n=5). At 18 days after hatching, the trunk fur was developed in the caudal fin with an average total length of $8.02{\pm}0.08mm$ (n=5). At 41 days after hatching, the larvae absorbed egg yolk at an average total length of $8.70{\pm}0.23mm$ (n=5). At 80 days after hatching, the average length of the fins was $12.6{\pm}0.28mm$ (n=5). The number of fin of the dorsal fin was iii.8, the anal fin iii.9~10, the caudal fin 19, lateral line scales 32~35 were similar to their brood stork.

  • Morphological variations in leaves and leaf trichomes according to tree age were investigated for the identification of Quercus taxa at the different stages of development. The sizes of leaves from one-year-old seedlings of Q. serrata, Q. dentata, and Q. aliena were the smallest and increased with tree age. Blade length, blade width, petiole length, number of serration, and serration depth war also varied with tree age. Therefore, the examined taxa by the size and form of leaves were hardly identified at juvenile stages. The type, structure, and density of leaf trichomes of each species varied remarkably along with tree age. Three types of trichomes such as small stellate hairs, large stellate hairs, and long single hairs were observed on the abaxial side of leaves of Quercus taxa. In matured trees of Q. serrata both small stellate and long single hairs on leaves were observed. On the other hand large stellate hairs were found in leaves of Q. dentata. There were small stellate hairs in Q. aliens. In Q. mongolica var. crispula, no hair or small stellate hairs were occasionally found. It is possible to identify Q. serrata and Q. dentata by the characteristics of trichome even at two to three year old seedlings, while, it is difficult to tell Q. aliens and Q. mongolica var. crispula of seedlings from other taxa only by those of trichome.

  • This study sought to identify developmental trajectories of bullying victimization from late elementary school through early high school, and to examine internalizing and externalizing problem outcomes associated with the trajectory group membership. Data from Seoul Panel Study of Children were collected annually over a 7-year period from 5th grade of elementary school through 2nd grade of high school (2005~2011). Latent class growth analysis yield three trajectory classes corresponding to stable low (81.2%), stable high (3.5%), and declining bullying victimization (15.6%). Findings from analysis of covariance indicated that students in both stable high and declining trajectory groups reported significantly higher means in internalizing behavior (withdrawal, depression/anxiety, and suicide ideation), compared to those in the stable low group. For externalizing behavior such as aggression and juvenile status offense, students in the stable high group showed higher means, compared to those in the stable low and declining trajectory groups. Developmental pattern of bullying victimization over multiple development stages and associated internalizing and externalizing outcomes are discussed as are the implications for the bullying prevention.

  • This study investigated the early life history of the Boleophthalmus pectinirostris living in the southern coastal Yeoja-man and compared the results with the same Gobiidae fishes. The brood stork used in the study were captured with bare hands in the tidal flats of Beolgyo-eup, Jeollanam-do, in June 2015. The amount of spawning was 411~11,688, and the eggs were short oval and the size was 1.40×0.72 mm. The time of hatched took 91 hours and 35 minutes at a water temperature of 25~27℃. Newly hatching larvae, the yolk sac had a total length of 3.02~3.31 (average 3.17±0.08, n=30) mm and did not eat rotifer. 4 days after hatching, the total length was 3.31~3.52 (3.43±0.07, n=30) mm, and as the mouth and anus opened, the fish transitioned to the preflexion larvae and fed. 14 days after hatching, the total length was 5.06~5.25 (5.16±0.06, n=30) mm, and the distal end of the vertebra was completely bent at 45° and the transitioned to the postflexion larvae. 41 days after hatching, the total length was 14.3~16.8 (15.4±0.85 mm, n=30), and the number of fins reached an integer of 5 first dorsal fins, 26~27 second dorsal fins, 24~27 anal fins, and 6 ventral fins, and the transitioned to the juveniles. As a result of the study, star-shaped melanophore were deposited from the front of the pectoral fin to the base of the caudal fin, which distinguished them in form from other postflexion larvae of Gobiidae fishes.

  • Chicken feathers could be classified into early-feathering (EF) and late-feathering (LF) depending on the development and patterns of the wing and tail feathers. Currently, feather-sexing is a widely used chick sexing method in the industry. This study was carried out to suggest the method of classifying of EF and LF chicks to establish auto-sexing Korean native chicken (KNC) strains. The development and morphology of wing feathers and tail feathers in 856 KNCs from hatching to 55-days old were analyzed to classify EF and LF chicks. We also performed PCR analysis using K-specific gene primers to confirm the agreement between the phenotypes and genotypes of EF and LF chickens. In the results, the EF chicks had long primaries and coverts, and there was a significant difference in length between primaries and coverts. The LF chicks had shorter primaries and coverts than the EF chicks, and showed little difference in the length between primaries and coverts. LF chicks could be classified into four groups: LF-Less, LF-Scant, LF-Equal and LF-Reverse according to their wing feather patterns. EF chicks had 1.5 times longer primaries than LF chicks until they were 15-days old, but the lengths were almost the same at 50-days old. The tail feathers of the EF chicks were apparent at 5-days old, but those of the LF chicks were short and indefinite at that time. When EF and LF chicks were classified by the length of primaries being more or less than 9 mm, the classification accuracies for EF and LF chicks were 96.2% and 85.4%, respectively, compared to the PCR results. In conclusion, juvenile EF and LF KNC showed distinct differences in feather development and morphology, and could be easily distinguished at one day-old.

  • We performed four sets of feeding trials to establish optimum feed size (Exp-I), stocking density (Exp-II) and feeding frequency (Exp-III and IV) for Korean rockfish. In Exp-I, three different particle sizes of a commercial diet (small, 2.0-2.1 mm; medium, 2.4-3.2 mm; and large, 4.0-5.3 mm) were fed to four replicate groups of fish ($22.8{\pm}0.1g$), each of which was fed to apparent satiation for six weeks. In Exp-II, fish ($44.3{\pm}0.4g$) were reared at four stocking densities (1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 $kg/m^3$) and fed a commercial diet to apparent satiation for four weeks. In Exp-III, fish ($14.8{\pm}0.1g$) were fed a commercial diet once, twice, thrice, $4{\times}$ or $5{\times}$ a day at a feeding ratio of 3.25% of body mass. Another group of fish was fed the same commercial diet $5{\times}$ a day to apparent satiation; this treatment was designated FS (five times satiation/day). In Exp-IV, fish ($31.3{\pm}0.1g$) were fed a commercial diet once, twice, thrice or $4{\times}$ a day to apparent satiation. Another group of fish was fed to apparent satiation once every 48 hours. In Exp-I, fish fed the large particle (4.0-5.3 mm) diet had a significantly higher feed conversion ratio and lower protein efficiency ratio than fish fed the small particle diet. In Exp-II, groups of fish reared at densities of 4.5 and 6.0 $kg/m^3$ had significantly higher feed intake and growth performance than fish reared at 1.5 and 3.0 $kg/m^3$. In Exp-III, fish fed to apparent satiation had significantly higher growth performances than fish fed once or $4{\times}$ a day. A significantly higher feed conversion ratio and a lower protein efficiency ratio were obtained in the FS group. In Exp-IV, growth performance and feed utilization efficiency were not significantly affected by experimental variation in feeding frequency. Fish fed to apparent satiation once every 48 hours had better feed utilization than those in other treatments and growth performances of those were comparable. Therefore, the optimum feed particle size, stocking density and feeding frequency for Korean rockfish under conditions we used were 2.0-3.2 mm, 4.5-6.0 $kg/m^3$, and once a day or once every 48 hour, respectively.

  • The egg size and weight of the gray field slug, Deroceras reticulatum Muller, was $1.91{\times}2.19$ mm and 3.3 mg at $24^{\circ}C$, respectively. Its weight increased from newly laid eggs to adults for 17 weeks at four temperature regimes and was heaviest at $20^{\circ}C$, followed by 24, 16 and $28^{\circ}C$. Likewise, hatching rate of the egg batches was highest with 95% at $20^{\circ}C$, followed by 24, 16 and $28^{\circ}C$ with significant differences. The number of eggs in the batches was increased with 20 at $20^{\circ}C$ while it was only 10 at $28^{\circ}C$. The average accumulated egg-laying days was longest with 15 days at $20^{\circ}C$ while shortest with 9 days at $24^{\circ}C$. The range of egg-laying period was shortest with 84-134 days at $16^{\circ}C$ and longest at $20^{\circ}C$. Thus, the total number of eggs laid by adult D. reticulatum was highest with 217 at $20^{\circ}C$ and lowest with 105 at $16^{\circ}C$. The egg period was 12-19 days while the juvenile period and adult longevity were 51-68 days and 85-134 days, respectively. The life span of D. reticulatum from egg to adult was longest with 216 days at $20^{\circ}C$, followed by 193 days at $24^{\circ}C$, 170 days at $16^{\circ}C$ and 151 days at $28^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, the most favorable temperature for the oviposition, development and longevity of D. reticulatum is $20^{\circ}C$.

  • To find the influence of water temperature, tank color and illumination in feeding, growth and blind-side hypermelanosis of starry flounder, Platichthys stellatus, in the present study, we performed a series of temperature, background color and illumination intensity test for 180 days (From June to December). The test was done in duplicate at 100 fish/tank (430% of initial covering area [PCA]) with the selected ordinary juvenile flounder (TL $17.3{\pm}0.5cm$, BW $82.5{\pm}0.2g$). The rearing was performed in darkgreen FRP aquarium tanks ($H100cm{\times}L100cm{\times}W100cm$; bottom area $1m^2$) lighten with average 1,000 lux and 230 lux, and in white FRP aquarium tank ($H100cm{\times}L100cm{\times}W100cm$; bottom area $1m^2$) lighten with average 230 lux of light intensity. We investigated correlation of daily food intake (DFI) with water temperature and salinity, and compared the influences of background colors and light intensity in DFI, food efficiency (FE), growth, survival rate, and ratio of malpigmented blind-side area and ambicolored fish ratio. In DFI, although it was not related with salinity, the amount was significantly decreased under 0.5 g/fish/day in summer and winter season, but was significantly increased over 1.5 g/fish/day in autumn season showing from $10^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$ in water temperature. In background and illumination test, DFI, FE and survival rate showed no difference among three groups. The ratios of malpigmented blind-side area and ambicolored fish were also not significantly different among three groups, indicating that the blind-side hypermelanosis of starry may be governed not by background color (or light intensity) but by a genetics external trait inherited from parents.

  • Feeding trials were conducted to determine the essentiality of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and to compare the efficiency between EPA and DHA for juvenile Korean rockfish. Fish averaging 2.1 g were fed experimental diets containing different levels of EPA or DHA, and different combinations of EPA and DHA in two separate experiments. Graded levels ($0.0{\sim}l.75\%$) of dietary EPA or DHA as ethyl esters were substituted for a part of the $8\%$ beef tallow in the basal diet. After 5 weeks of the experimental period, weight gain, chemical composition of whole body, protein and lipid retention efficiency, hepatosomatic index, and fatty acid composition of liver were measured. Daily growth rate and feed efficiency were the lowest in fish fed the diets without EPA arid DHA. These responses were effectively improved by increasing EPA or DHA in the diets up to $1.0\%$ levels, and then reached a plateau between 1.0 and $1.75\%$ levels of either EPA or DHA. Protein and lipid retention efficiency were also improved with the high levels of dietary EPA or DHA. DHA was superior to EPA at the same level of each in weight gain, feed efficiency, and protein and lipid retention efficiency. Hepatosomatic index tended to decrease with increase of the dietary EPA or DHA levels. Lipid contents of whole body were increased with levels of EPA or DHA in the diets. Dietary EPA and/or DHA levels affected directly the fatty acid composition of liver polar lipid. EPA or DHA in the liver polar lipid were increased with levels of dietary EPA or DHA, respectively, whereas those in nonpolar lipid were not affected by the dietary levels of EPA and/or DHA. These finding indicate that either of the EPA or DHA is essential for normal growth of Korean rockfish, and the essential fatty acid requirement is $1.0\%$ of EPA and/or DHA in the diet. DHA is superior to EPA as essential fatty acid, and the dietary EPA/DHA ratio of less than 1.0 may be adequate for normal growth of Korean rockfish fed a diet enough n-3HUFA (EPA and DHA).
