  • Objective: This study examined the relationships between negative affect, social support, and career maturity among adolescents. Methods: The participants in this study comprised 260 $1^{th}$ junior high school students in a Seoul metropolitan area. They completed questionnaires on level of negative affect, social support, and career maturity. Data were analyzed by means of basic descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, and multiple and hierarchical regression analyses. Aiken and West's method was used to determine the interactive model's modality. Results: The major findings were as follows: First, negative affect was negatively correlated with social support and career maturity. Social support was positively correlated with career maturity. Second, significant interaction effects were found between negative affect and social support on career maturity; that is, for male students, significant interaction effects were found between negative affect and social support (parent support) on career maturity (career determinacy/career independence). For female students, significant interaction effects were found between negative affect and social support (peer support) on career maturity (career confidence/career readiness/career determinacy/career independence). Conclusion: These results suggest the need to intervene in relation to social support (parent support/peer support) and to improve career maturity among adolescents.

  • This study assessed gender differences of 'solo eating' perceptions and dietary behaviors among college students residing in Seoul and Kyongki province. Two types of questionnaires were used to analyze perception and dietary behaviors of subjects: a cross-sectional survey (N=893) and AGA (Associative Group Analysis; N=50). Women ate significantly more and intook a greater variety of foods when eating together (P<0.05). Men, on the other hand, showed no difference in these variables. Women, compared to men, spent more time eating both alone and together (P<0.001). In the associative group analysis (AGA), women showed a different semantic value for 'solo eating' compared to men. Women also tended to feel lonely when they ate alone and had positive images of eating together. Students began to decide their own dietary behaviors after junior and high school. Dietary lives of Koreans have rapidly changed along with social changes over the past half century. These research findings will contribute to more comprehensive and efficient nutrition education programs for preventing lifestyle-related diseases in the early stage of adulthood.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify fashion leadership and information seeking as a part of adolescents'clothing purchase behavior study. The questionnaire was administered to 291 junior high school students. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, t-test and ANOVA utilizing SPSS/PC/sup +/. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The adolescents usually used store information seeking and consultation with friends as continuous information seeking. The adolescents usually read fashion articles in the fashion magazine more than fashion advertisements. As information seeking before purchasing, they watched store displayed or window displayed clothes the most, and then consulted with friends or family members. The degree of information seeking before purchasing was significantly different according to the number of purchasing clothes. 2. Three factors (mass communication informations, observation & personal information, and family members information) of information sources derived by factor analysis. 3. Three groups were classified as fashion leaders, fashion flowers, and fashion laggards according to fashion leadership. Girls perceived themselves as fashion leaders much more than boys did. There was significant difference among three fashion leadership groups in the number of purchasing clothes and price partially. 4. Fashion leaders seeked the continuous information and mostly used mass communication information sources and observation & personal information as information sources before purchasing clothes.

  • This study was performed to investigate body image perception and eating disorders by sex in Korean adolescents. In both females and males, the students were more likely to be underweight than overweight. Females were more underweight than males and were more likely to perceive themselves as overweight. In addition, females were less satisfied with their body shape and had more stress associated with their body weight and eating disorders. These results indicate that nutrition education programs, particularly in female students, should incorporate strategies to change inaccurate self-body image perception and disseminate knowledge about proper weight control methods.

  • The purpose of this study was to present a class case that verified the validity, reliability, and usefulness of a portfolio assessment in a cohousing class in the housing area of home economics. To achieve this objective, 241 male and female students in eight classes of the third grade of a junior high school in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, were enrolled in a project class on establishing a cohousing village in which the portfolio assessment method was applied for a total of 10 sessions for approximately four weeks from May 24 to June 16, 2021. To ensure the validity of the portfolio assessment, we designed the lesson after presenting the curriculum goals in detail using the backward design model and developed a specific rubric and conducted all evaluations and feedback based on the rubric to ensure objectivity and reliability. The online tool Padlet was used as a portfolio, which allowed students to easily upload their work, receive feedback from the teacher, and interact with their peers. After the class, the students reflected on the rubric and were generally satisfied with the class using portfolio assessment. This study is expected to facilitate the use of the portfolio assessment method in the classroom, while also supporting student growth and development.

  • Free learning semester aims to foster key competencies in junior high students via reinforcing student participation and career education. This paper investigates the programs of school and public libraries, as well as the roles that university libraries and LIS could play in the changing educational environment. School libraries, though an essential element in the educational infrastructure, are seriously underused. In addition, the support programs of public libraries tend to focus on guest lectures or field trips, rather than reinforcing the students to experience the foundational library services. Public libraries are in a good position to play an active role in strengthening school libraries. They should take a proactive role in forming a partnership with university libraries, LIS faculty and students, and in developing diverse programs ranging from vocational/career education to enhancing key competencies.

  • The aim of this study is to research and analyse how junior-high students, both male and female in Inchon area, are recognizing the contents of the curriculum in the subject of home economics and how effectively they are learning and applying it in their actual life. 772 students, both male and female, who started to learn the subject of home economics from the 7th grade as compulsory are the respondents, and the survey is done by using questionnaire. The result shows that after taking the course of home economics, both male and female students have got more positive view on the necessity of learning the subject. But still, on the whole, female students are more intersted and more active than males the subject in learning. As for food and nutrition part, large percentage of the respondents, both male and female, answer that it is very helpful. They tend to be on more balanced diet and when they purchase food or when they eat at restaurant they refer what they learn about nutrition at school more often than not. A number of the students are re-practicing cooking at home after they learn it at school. Also the fact in the survey shows that more and more mothers are getting active in asking their children to re-practice cooking. One of the difficulties for male students to take the course is stereo-typed thinking on the separate role of man and woman in the family. But many of them started cooking some food, even though it is very simple, and the survey shows that their interest in nutrition and health increased after they were initiated into this course.

  • Frying is the most popular cooking style used in food service institutions in Korea because fried dishes are well accepted by students. However, trans fat contents reduction have recently been required in many foods for health reasons Therefore, alternatives to frying such as oven baking or roasting are being used in many institutions. Steam convection ovens provide dry heat as well as steam so that they can be used to make a wide variety of Korean dishes. In this study, a menu acceptance test was conducted over 2 weeks. Pork, chicken, fish and potato dishes cooked by conventional cooking methods were served for 4 successive days, after which the same dishes were prepared using the oven. Overall, 322 junior high school students evaluated the traditionally cooked foods, while 316 evaluated the oven cooked foods. Comparison of the foods prepared using both methods only revealed a significant difference in the acceptability of foods on the fish menu (p<0.05). Specifically, the acceptance of fried fish was higher than that of the oven baked fish. Additionally, overall acceptance of the menu by males was higher than the acceptance by girls. Furthermore, students who had the preference for special ingredients showed a higher menu acceptance for the menu cooked with those ingredients. On average, approximately 25% of the meal was not consumed and left as plate waste. The portion of the fried fish not consumed was smaller than that of the oven cooked fish, but the portion not consumed did not vary based on cooking method for any other foods evaluated. Overall, it is expected that the oven cooking method will be a good substitute for frying or other cooking method for traditional Korean dishes.
