  • The initial joint width design of the terminal joint between post-tensioned concrete pavement (PTCP) and jointed concrete pavement (JCP) was studied in this research. The joint width between PTCP and JCP directly affects noise and ride quality. If the initial joint width is very large, noise increases and ride quality decreases. If the initial joint width is very small, on the other hand, under high temperatures, PTCP slabs can blow up, or failures near the joint can occur due to excessive compressive stresses. The terminal joint width behavior between PTCP and JCP near Jumunjin at Donghae expressway under temperature changes was measured in August and November 2010 and the data was analyzed. From this study, the design methodology of the optimal initial terminal joint width was proposed.

  • In this study, a new TDR system equipped with a flat type probe has been developed to improve the currently used TDR system that measures dry density and water content. To verify the developed TDR system, TDR tests were conducted on Jumunjin sand and three typical soils. Also, additional tests were performed to measure the correction value of the developed probe. Using the TDR signals, dielectric constant, electrical conductivity and soil constants were derived. The water content and dry density of the soils were determined through the TDR tests. The applicability of the TDR system was examined by comparison of the measured values by TDR and the real values. The values of dry density and water content were found to have about 2% and 0.5% error, respectively. Based on the test results, it has been confirmed that the new TDR system can be used as an alternative to the previous TDR system as it can measure the dry density and the water content with reasonable accuracy, leading to significant time and cost savings.

  • We performed laboratory spudcan penetration and extraction tests considering various geometries. Jumunjin sand, representative standard sand in South Korea, and kaolinite were used for uniform sand and clay layers, respectively. The measured vertical bearing and pull-out capacities were compared to empirical equations for shallow foundations. The results showed good agreement between measured and calculated bearing capacity from laboratory test and previous study at shallow depths. The effect of spudcan geometry is shown to depend on site condition. The influence of a sharp spigot is not significant in clays. The slope of the spudcan surface is shown to influence the pull-out capacity. The characteristics of spudcan penetration and extraction behavior considering various geometries can be a useful reference for determining spudcan geometries.

  • It has been expected not only for crew but also for passengers to realize a ship whose rolling and other motions are small as much as possible. Restricting our consideration to the roll reduction, the conventional roll stabilization system, fins or anti-rolling tanks hve been utiized as the actuator. Excessive motions would interfere with the recreational activities of passengers on a cruise ship. Often more than half of the load of a containership is stowed above deck where it is subjected to large acclerations due to rolling. In some situations this may cause some internal damage to the contents of the containers; in more severe situations failure of the lashing can occur and containers may be lost over-board. Underdeck cargo in ordinary cargo ships and bulk commodities in colliers, ore ships and grain ships can shift if the motions become too severe. The purpose of this study is to concentrate on the additions. either internal or external to the hull, that reduce or otherwise improve the motion responses of the hull. It is assumed that the additions are such that their benefit to the motions of the ship outweights any impact on the ability of the ship to perform its assigned task. It is particularly challenging to obtain large improvements in the motion characteristics of existing ships that are being rebuilt or modified for some task not anticipated in their original design. Further the authors will statistically analyze the influence of ruder-roll-yaw coupling motion in the case of application of this advanced control method to various kinds of ship.

  • Centrifuge model experiments were performed to investigate the confining effects of the sheet piles, installed to the sides of soft clay ground treated with sand compaction piles, on the bearing capacity and concentration ratio of composite ground. For the given g-level in the centrifuge model tests, replacement ratio of SCP and the width of surcharge loads on the surface of ground with SCP, the confining effects of installing the sheet piles on the edges of SCP ground on the bearing capacity, change of stress concentration ratio and failure mechanism were investigated. Kaolin, one of typical clay mineral, and Jumunjin standard sand were used as a soft clay ground and sand compaction pile irrespectively. As results of experiments, lateral confining effect by inserting the model sheet piles fixed to the loading plate was observed. For the strip surcharge loading condition, the yielding stress intensity in the form of the strip surcharge loads tends to increase with increasing the embedded depth of sheet piles. The stress concentration ratio was found not to be influenced consistently with the embedded depth of sheet piles whereas the effect of stress intensity on stress concentration ratio shows the general trend that values of stress concentration ratio are relatively high at the initial stage of loading and tend to decrease and converge to the certain values. For the failure mechanism in the case of reinforced with sheet piles, displacement behavior related to the punching failure, settlement right beneath the loading plate occurred since the soil was confined with sheet piles, was observed.

  • Dielectric constant measurement has drawn much attention in the investigation of the properties and contaminations of subsurface. In this study, by varying the frequency from 75 kHz to 12 MHz, dielectric constant was measured for the weathered granite soil and Jumunjin sand having different water contents and dry density. The dielectric constant of sand showed the dispersive behavior indicating that dielectric constant decreased with frequency of an electric field. And the dielectric constant of soil increased as water content and/or dry density increased due to the decrease of air portion and/or the increase of amount of water molecules which could contribute to the development of orientation polarization. The dielectric constant of sand showed a linear relationship with the moisture density, considering both water content and dry density. At low frequency, the dielectric constants calculated by Maxwell's, Topp's and CRIM equation deviated from measured values. It could be explained by the fact that those equations did not consider dispersive behavior of dielectric constant with the frequency.

  • Evaluation of permeability and coefficient of consolidation of clayey sand is critical in analyzing ground stability or environmental problems such as prediction of pollutant transport in groundwater. In this study, permeability tests using a flexible wall permeameter are performed to derive the coefficient of consolidation and permeability of reconstituted soil samples with various mixing ratios of kaolin clays and two different types of sands, which are Jumunjin and Ottawa sands. The test results indicate that the coefficient of consolidation and permeability plots linearly against clay contents in semi-log scale graphs for low clay mixing ratios ranging between 10 to 30%. It is also demonstrated that coefficient of consolidation and permeability of sand and clay mixture are dependent on the soil structure. Contrary to previous findings, the permeability is shown to be independent of the void ratio at low mixing ratios, which can be classified as non-floating fabric. The permeability decreases with the void ratio for floating fabric.

  • Evaluation of an amplitude domain reflectometry (ADR) type soil moisture sensor as ThetaProbe ML2x using the response of frequency impedance was performed in a variety of soil porous media such as Jumunjin standard sand, weathered granite soil at Sangju area, and weathered gneiss soil at Jangsu area. The tested soils were classified with a dried condition and a wetted condition for comparing with soil volumetric water content under different installed depths of the measurement sensor. In the results the part of measurement rod including one signal rod and three shield rod 6cm in length was found to decrease the variation of measurement output voltage with insert 5cm over into the soil porous media. The measurement output voltage was verified to more stable output voltage under weathered granite soils and weathered gneiss soils contained the fine grain materials such as clay and silt minerals than the gradual grain material like as the standard sands. Therefore, measurement values by soil moisture sensor can be offered the more stable values when an contact volume between soil porous media and measurement sensor increase.

  • In order to distinguish the genetic polymorphism among the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) obtained from East sea of Jumunjin, aquaculture of Tongyoung and Geoje, and East sea of North Korea, the ND-4 and cytochrome b genes of olive flounder were divided into 5 regions. Each region was analyzed by degenerating gel electrophoresis scanning (DGES), and by subsequent DNA sequencing. The DGES disclosed characteristic DNA polymorphisms in ND-4-2 and ND-4-3 regions of olive flounder, which were also confirmed by the DNA sequencing. The olive flounders obtained from the different marine areas showed DNA mutations in ND-4-2 region (G390A, C402T, and A411G; GenBank: AB028664), and also showed frequent DNA mutations in ND-4-3 region (C515G, C537T, C538T, A567G, G714A, C736T, G756A, A759T, T817C, and T829G), white the cytochrome b gene showed no DNA mutation both in the DGES and DNA sequencing. These data suggest that the ND-4-2 and ND-4-3 regions are candidate loci to distinguish the origin of olive flounder, and that the DGES used in this study provided fast and reliable informations for the genetic polymorphism.

  • The multi-outlets were installed on the existing seawater exchange breakwater in order to improve seawater exchange rate at Jumunjin harbor. Physical and numerical model system were fulfilled for 4 cases to evaluate seawater exchange system which is able to discharge water remotely. The seawater circulation pattern and seawater exchange rate in the harbor were compared and analyzed. Consequently, total seawater exchange rate for CASE 1 was calculated 48% due to the dead zones which hinder seawater circulation in the harbor. Otherwise, the seawater exchange rates of CASE 2, CASE 3, and CASE 4 with the installation of the system were enhanced 19%, 15% and 17%, respectively compare to CASE 1.
