황아귀, Lophius litulon (Jordan)의 자어기의 형태 (ON THE MORPHOLOGY OF LARVAL STAGES OF LOPHIUS LITULON (JORDAN))

  • 1976년 6월 20일에 해운대 동백섬 연안에서 채집된 황아귀의 자어를 재료로 하여 초기생활사에 따른 형태변화 과정중 등지느러미 이극, 배지느러미, 색소포 및 소화관의 발적과정과 아가미, 새조 및 치아등의 형성과정에 관하여 관찰하였다. 1. 제1등지느러미 제1극의 원기는 부화직후인 2.7mm 전후에 생겨나 6.30mm 전후에서 극의 형태로 분화되며, 제2극은 5.82mm 전후에 원기가 나타나고 제3극은 6.45mm 전후에서 원기가 나타나 분화되는 것같다. 2. 배지느러미는 2.7mm 전후에 가슴지느러미의 바로 뒤쪽에서 원기가 나타나고, 처음에는 반원형으로 솟아나듯 하든 것이 차츰 발달함에 따라 뒤쪽으로 향해 곤봉상으로 길어지고, 전장 6.35mm 전후에서 전장의 1/2 정도의 크기로 발달하며, 가는 두 줄의 지느러미 줄기가 나타난다. 3. 색소포의 발달은 특히 미부에 있어서 2단계로 구분할 수 있는데, 부화직후(2.7mm 전후) 미부에 불규칙 9열로 분포하는 경우와 시일이 경과함에 따라 전장 4.25mm전후에는 뚜렷한 3개의 색소포군을 형성하는 경우를 들 수 있다. 4. 소화관은 부화직후인 2.7mm 전후에 창자의 시흔이 나타나기 시작하며 전장 5.4mm 전후에 난황이 축소되면서 창자의 굴곡등 소화관의 윤곽이 뚜렷해질 뿐만 아니라 입도 열리는 것 같다. 5. 아가미는 전장 6.35mm 전후에 시흔이 보이며 발달하기 시작하고 치아는 전장 6.25mm 전후에 원기가 나타나고 새조는 6.45mm 전후에 5개의 새조골을 볼 수 있다.

Evaluation of Kinetic Parameters and Thermal Stability of Melt-Quenched BixSe100-x Alloys (x≤7.5 at%) by Non-Isothermal Thermogravimetric Analysis

  • Non-isothermal thermogravimetry (TG) measurements on melt-quenched $Bi_xSe_{100-x}$ specimens (x=0, 2.5, 7.5 at%) were made at a heating rate ${\beta}=10^{\circ}C/min$ in the range $T=35^{\circ}C{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. The as-measured TG curves confirm that $Bi_xSe_{100-x}$ samples were thermally stable with minor loss at $T{\leq}400^{\circ}C$ and mass loss starts to decrease up to $600^{\circ}C$, beyond which trivial mass loss was observed. These TG curves were used to estimate molar (Se/Bi)-ratios of $Bi_xSe_{100-x}$ samples, which were not in accordance with initial composition. Shaping features of conversion curves ${\alpha}(T)-T$ of $Bi_xSe_{100-x}$ samples combined with a reliable flow chart were used to reduce kinetic mechanisms that would have caused their thermal mass loss to few nth-order reaction models of the form $f[{\alpha}(T)]{\propto}[1-{\alpha}(T)]^n$ (n=1/2, 2/3, and 1). The constructed ${\alpha}(T)-T$ and $(d{\alpha}(T)/dT)-T$ curves were analyzed using Coats-Redfern (CR) and Achar-Brindley-Sharp (ABS) kinetic formulas on basis of these model functions, but the linearity of attained plots were good in a limited ${\alpha}(T)-region$. The applicability of CR and ABS methods, with model function of kinetic reaction mechanism R0 (n=0), was notable as they gave best linear fits over much broader ${\alpha}(T)-range$.

LQ 제어와 근의 이동범위를 이용한 중근의 극배치 방법 (Pole Placement Method of a Double Poles Using LQ Control and Pole's Moving-Range)

  • 일반적으로 비선형 시스템은 1차와 2차 시스템의 곱의 형태로 선형화되며, 시스템은 실근, 중근, 서로 다른 두 실근, 복소근의 4종류의 근을 가진다. 이 논문은 시스템이 가지는 4가지 근 중에서 조단블록을 갖는 중근을 복소근으로 이동시키는 LQ 제어의 가중행렬과 제어법칙을 설계하는 방법에 관한 것이다. 상태가중행렬을 제한 조건으로 하고 성능지수함수를 최소화하는 LQ 제어는 시스템의 안정성을 보장하고 시스템의 근을 이동시키는 극배치 기능을 가지고 있다. 그렇지만 이 방법은 시행착오 방법으로 설계 변수인 가중행렬을 설정하고, 이동되는 근의 위치를 정확히 지정할 수 없는 문제가 있다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 해밀토니안 시스템의 특성방정식을 대각행렬의 제어가중행렬과 삼각함수로 표현된 상태가중행렬을 이용하여 기술한다. 이동할 복소근이 이 특성방정식의 근이라는 조건에서 중근과 상태가중행렬의 관계식(𝜌, 𝜃)을 유도하고 상태가중행렬이 양의 반한정행렬이라는 조건에서 중근의 이동범위를 구하고, 좌표평면에 도시한다. 그려진 중근의 이동범위에서 복소근을 선택하여 관계식에 대입하여 상태가중행렬을 계산하고, 이것에서 제어법칙이 구한다. 예제에서 3차 시스템의 중근을 이동시키는 제어법칙의 설계과정을 통해 제안한 방법의 타당성을 확인하였다.

최소 표현 라플라스 변환에 기초한 단계형 확률변수의 시뮬레이션에 관한 연구 (Simulation of the Phase-Type Distribution Based on the Minimal Laplace Transform)

  • 단계형 확률분포는 마코프 체인이 특정 상태로 흡수되는 시점까지 거쳐가는 여러 단계에서 체재하는 시간들의 합으로 정의되며 대기행렬 시스템과 신뢰성 분석 모형 등에 광범위하게 사용된다. 연속적 단계형 분포의 경우 흡수 상태로 진입하기까지 거쳐가는 각각의 단계에서의 체재 시간이 지수분포를 따르므로 연속적 단계형 분포는 다양한 지수분포들의 합 또는 볼록 결합으로 나타낼 수 있다. 단계형 분포를 생성하는 가장 일반적이면서도 직관적인 방법은 마코비안 표현방법이라 불리는 초기 확률벡터와 전이 생성행렬에 의해 주어지는 조건부 확률을 이용하는 것이다. 적률이 주어진 상황에서 단계형 변수를 생성하는 방법에 대한 기존의 연구들은 대부분 적률을 마코비안 표현방법으로 변환하는 것을 전제로 하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 적률을 마코비안 표현방법으로 변환하지 않고 확률 분포함수를 결정하여 단계형 확률변수를 생성하는 방법에 대해 살펴보고 마코프 표현을 사용하는 기존의 방법 대신에 조단 분해법과 최소 표현 라플라스 변환을 이용하여 2계 단계형 확률변수를 분포함수를 결정하는 공식과 절차를 제시한다. 이러한 접근 방법은 고차원의 단계형 확률분포를 이용하여 대기행렬의 시뮬레이션을 하는 경우에 마코비안 표현방법의 전이행렬을 결정하여 변수를 생성하는 경우보다 효율적이다.

Drag reduction of a circular cylinder at subcritical flow regime using base shield plates

  • Experimental studies on drag reduction of a circular cylinder of diameter D were conducted in the subcritical flow regime at Reynolds numbers in the range $4{\times}10^4{\leq}Re{\leq}10^5$. To shield the cylinder rear surface from the pressure deficit of the unsteady vortex generation in the near wake, two shield plates were attached downstream of the separation points to form a cavity at the base region. The chord of the shield plates, L, ranged from 0.22 to 1.52 D and the cavity width, G, was in the range from 0 to 0.96 D. It is concluded that significant drag reductions from that of a plain cylinder may be achieved by proper sizing of the shield plates and the base cavity. The study shows that using a pair of shield plates at G/D of 0.86 and angular position ${\theta}$ of ${\pm}121^{\circ}$ results in a configuration with percentage drag reduction of 40% for L/D of 0.5, and 55% for L/D of 1.0.

ASYMPTOTIC STABILITY OF NON-AUTONOMOUS UPPER TRIANGULAR SYSTEMS AND A GENERALIZATION OF LEVINSON'S THEOREM

  • This article studies asymptotic stability of non-auto nomous linear systems with time-dependent coefficient matrices {A(t)}t∈ℝ. The classical theorem of Levinson has been widely used to science and engineering non-autonomous systems, but systems with defective eigenvalues could not be covered because such a family does not allow continuous diagonalization. We study systems where the family allows to have upper triangulation and to have defective eigenvalues. In addition to the wider applicability, working with upper triangular matrices in place of Jordan form matrices offers more flexibility. We interpret our and earlier works including Levinson's theorem from the perspective of invariant manifold theory.

Evaluation of Feeding a Fibrolytic Enzyme to Lactating Dairy Cows on Their Lactational Performance during Early Lactation

  • Twenty eight multiparous lactating cows were utilized in an experiment to evaluate the response to an exogenous fibrolytic enzyme on their lactational performance during early lactation period (in terms of milk production, milk composition, feed intake, milking efficiency, body weight change) and the exact time of this response. Cows were randomized into two groups (14 each) with similar parities and were fed a concentrate ration of barley, ground corn, soybean meal, and wheat bran and roughage ration of alfalfa hay. One of the two groups was supplemented with the fibrolytic enzyme immediately after parturition up to 100 post partum. The experiment was of two phases with 50 days each. The enzyme, which has a cellulase/hemicellulase activity (derived from Trichoderma group), was added to the concentrate part of the ration in a dry powder form. Milk production, 3.5% fat corrected milk, energy corrected milk were higher (p<0.05) for cows fed treated diet. At the same time, No differences were observed in percentages of milk components, feed intake, body weight, body weight change, or rectal temperature for the whole experimental period or during any of the two phases. Efficiency of milk production was higher (p<0.05) for treatment group cows than for that of the control ones. However, efficiency was better during the second phase than during the first phase. Feeding enzyme treated diets to dairy cows improved lactational performance during early 100 day of the lactation period. However, the first 50 days of lactation looked to be the critical.

A Prospective Analysis of Dynamic Loss of Breast Projection in Tissue Expander-Implant Reconstruction

  • Background Breast projection is a critical element of breast reconstruction aesthetics, but little has been published regarding breast projection as the firm expander is changed to a softer implant. Quantitative data representing this loss in projection may enhance patient education and improve our management of patient expectations. Methods Female patients who were undergoing immediate tissue-expander breast reconstruction with the senior author were enrolled in this prospective study. Three-dimensional camera software was used for all patient photographs and data analysis. Projection was calculated as the distance between the chest wall and the point of maximal projection of the breast form. Values were calculated for final tissue expander expansion and at varying intervals 3, 6, and 12 months after implant placement. Results Fourteen breasts from 12 patients were included in the final analysis. Twelve of the 14 breasts had a loss of projection at three months following the implant placement or beyond. The percentage of projection lost in these 12 breasts ranged from 6.30% to 43.4%, with an average loss of projection of 21.05%. Conclusions This study is the first prospective quantitative analysis of temporal changes in breast projection after expander-implant reconstruction. By prospectively capturing projection data with three-dimensional photographic software, we reveal a loss of projection in this population by three months post-implant exchange. These findings will not only aid in managing patient expectations, but our methodology provides a foundation for future objective studies of the breast form.

Reproductive Responses of Awassi Ewes Treated with either Naturally Occurring Progesterone or Synthetic Progestagen

  • The objective was to identify the appropriate form of progesterone, which exhibits compact reproductive responses in Awassi ewes during mid to late seasonal anestrous period. Forty-eight Awassi ewes were randomly allocated into four groups to be treated with 60 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP), 30 mg fluorogestone acetate (FGA), 40 mg FGA, or 600 mg progesterone sponges. After a 12 day period, sponges were removed and ewes were administered i.m. with 600 IU PMSG (d 0, 0 h). Five harnessed Awassi rams were turned-in with the ewes to detect heat. Ewes were checked for breeding marks at 6 h intervals for 5 days. Blood samples were collected from all ewes for analysis of progesterone concentrations. Pretreatment (d -13 and -12) progesterone concentrations were ${\leq}0.2ng/mL$ among all ewes and were indicative of seasonal anestrous period. On d 0, progesterone concentrations were elevated to $1.4{\pm}0.1ng/mL$ in ewes received progesterone sponges only and were higher (p<0.0001) than those (${\leq}0.2ng/mL$) administered MAP or FGA sponges. Progesterone concentrations returned to their basal values of <0.2 ng/mL within 24 h of sponge removal and were similar (p>0.1) among all ewes. Incidence of estrus was similar (p>0.1) among the four groups and occurred in 75% (9/12), 82% (9/11), 67% (8/12) and 58% (7/12) of the ewes receiving MAP, 30 mg FGA, 40 mg FGA and progesterone sponges, respectively. Estrous responses occurred 14.7, 20 and 13.6 h earlier in progesterone-sponge-treated ewes than those of MAP- (p<0.04), 30 mg FGA- (p<0.01) and 40 mg FGA-treated (p=0.06) ewes, respectively. Induced estrus conception rates were 50% (6/12), 55% (6/11), 50% (6/12) and 42% (5/12), out of which 4/6, 4/6, 3/6 and 3/5 lambed 151 days following d 0, and were similar (p>0.1) among ewes of the four treatment groups. Ewes that returned to estrus 16 to 20 days following d 0 were 5/12, 5/11, 6/12 and 4/12 ewes treated with MAP, 30 mg FGA, 40 mg FGA and progesterone sponges, respectively, and all lambed 169 days later. Overall lambing rates were 75% (9/12), 82% (9/11), 75% (9/12) and 58% (7/12) ewes treated with MAP, 30 mg FGA, 40 mg FGA and progesterone sponges, respectively. Results demonstrate that applications of MAP, 30 mg FGA, 40 mg FGA and progesterone sponges Awassi ewes were equally effective in induction of estrus and tended to favor both types of FGA and MAP in overall lambing rates over progesterone sponges during the seasonal anestrous period.

2-deoxy-D-Glucose Synergizes with Doxorubicin or L-Buthionine Sulfoximine to Reduce Adhesion and Migration of Breast Cancer Cells

  • Background: Cancer metastasis depends on cell motility which is driven by cycles of actin polymerization and depolymerization. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and metabolic oxidative stress have long been associated with cancer. ROS play a vital role in regulating actin dynamics that are sensitive to oxidative modification. The current work aimed at studying the effects of sub-lethal metabolic oxidative stress on actin cytoskeleton, focal adhesion and cell migration. Materials and Methods: T47D human breast cancer cells were treated with 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG), L-buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), or doxorubicin (DOX), individually or in combination, and changes in intracellular total glutathione and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured. The expression of three major antioxidant enzymes was studied by immunoblotting, and cells were stained with fluorescent-phalloidin to evaluate changes in F-actin organization. In addition, cell adhesion and degradation ability were measured. Cell migration was studied using wound healing and transwell migration assays. Results: Our results show that treating T47D human breast cancer cells with drug combinations (2DG/BSO, 2DG/DOX, or BSO/DOX) decreased intracellular total glutathione and increased oxidized glutathione, lipid peroxidation, and cytotoxicity. In addition, the drug combinations caused a reduction in cell area and mitotic index, prophase arrest and a decreased ability to form invadopodia. The formation of F-actin aggregates was increased in treated T47D cells. Moreover, combination therapy reduced cell adhesion and the rate of cell migration. Conclusions: Our results suggest that exposure of T47D breast cancer cells to combination therapy reduces cell migration via effects on metabolic oxidative stress.
