  • Ultrasonic wave generation and propagation were modeled to simulate an ultrasonic test. A ray model was used for the modeling. Actual sound pressure distribution of the incident wave from an angle probe was analyzed using an ultrasonic visualization method to incorporate the actual sound pressure distribution in the model. In this method, the sound pressure was expressed by the density of rays and the reflection coefficient of ultrasonic beams. Reflection and mode conversion of rays were computed by the Snells law. Simulation programs for the problem of ultrasonic testing of a butt joint are built using this ray modeling. Simulation results for ultrasonic wave scattering from a defect and A-scan display in ultrasonic testing agreed with the actual experiment results.

  • This study was performed to evaluate and compare conservative treatment results by several parameters such as age, sex, symptom duration, type and timing of joint sound, parafunctional habits, splint type, and diagnostic classification. There have been too many articles reporting long term results of conservative treatment but articles related to comparison of treatment results by patients' self-evaluation have been rarely reported. For this study 258 patients with temporomandibular disorders(TMDs) were selected and examined by routine diagnostic procedure for TMDs. The subjects were classified into 5 TMDs subgroups ad treated with conservative treatments involving splints, physical modalities, jaw exercises, and counseling. Visual analogue scale(VAS) about pain, joint sound, and mouth opening limitation was recorded respectively during treatment period. From the VAS data and treatment duration, VAS treatment index(VAS Ti) was calculated. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Pain was the most frequent main symptom in subjects with temporomandibular disorders, and main symptom for mouth opening limitation was comparatively less than for pain or sound in disk displacement with reduction group or in degenerative joint disease group. 2. Degenerative joint disease group had the most poor treatment results and highest occlusal index of Helkim's index. 3. Good prognosis for conservative treatment was observed in acute group, under 6 months than chronic group, 6months over in symptom duration, and subjects with 40 years over in age showed the most poor prognosis. 4. Subjects treated with anterior repositioning splint had better treatment results than subjects treated with centric relation splint, but statistical significance in VAS Ti and treatment duration was not observed. 5. Treatment results according to affected side, types and point of joint sound did not show consistent statistical results. 6. The result for conservative treatment was observed poor in subjects with bruxism and clenching. 7. In studying coincidence between preferred chewing and affected side, frequency of preferred chewing side, in unilateral affection, was higher in ipsilateral than in contralateral side.

  • The purpose of this study was to prove the relationship between arthrographic and clinical features in temporomandibular joint disorders. In order to carry out this study, ninety-eight arthrographic examinations of temporomandibular joints were performed on eighty-two patients who had the temporomandibular joint disorders. As the arthrographic examination, the cases were classified in three groups, disk displacement with reduction, disk displacement without reduction, within normal limit. After this, the cases were clinically examined, and the results were compared and analyzed in each other group. The obtained results were as follows; 1. As the classification by arthrographic examination, three groups (disc displacement with reduction, disc displacement without reduction, within normal limit) were 41 %, 54%, 5% of total cases in this study, respectively. 2. The third decade(65%) was most frequent in this study. The average age of each group (disc displacement with reduction, disc displacement without reduction, within normal limit) was 24, 28, 21, and disc displacement without reduction group was higher than any other group. 3. In the chief complaint, pain was the most frequent in all three groups. Joint sound was also frequent in disc displacement with reduction group, but in disc displacement without reduction group, limitation of mouth opening was more frequent. 4. Of the various pain, the movement pain was most frequent ( 61 %) in this study. In joint sound, click(63%) was the most frequent in disc displacement with reduction group, but sound history(42%) and no sound (31 %) were more frequent in disc displacement without reduction group. 5. The average maximum opening of each group (disc displacement with reduction, disc displacement without reduction, within normal limit) was 44mm, 32.9mm, 44mm, and disc displacement without reduction group was less than any other group. 6. The masticatory disturbance of each group (disc displacement with reduction, disc displacement without reduction, within normal limit) was 53%, 79%, 40%, and the trauma history of each group was 50%, 40%,60%.

  • Objective: In patients with temporomandibular joint disorders, air insoles are used to investigate functionality and pain changes in the temporomandibular joint when walking in daily life. Intervention: Sixty-five patients with temporomandibular joint disorder were recruited: 34 as a control group who walked more than 7,000 steps a day in daily life, and 31 as an experimental group who were instructed to take at least 7,000 steps every day while wearing their air insoles. Measurements: To determine the effects of air insoles on temporomandibular joint pain, steady-state pain, maximum mouth opening, average pain, and the most severe pain were measured before and after the experiment. In addition, to evaluate functionality, the ability to open the mouth in a comfortable state, pain when opening the mouth, and the point of sound and maximum degree to which the mouth could be opened were evaluated before and after the experiment. Results: Pain, mouth openness, and sound points showed significant differences from the control group after the experiment, and the maximum mouth opening range showed no significant difference. Conclusion: When air insoles were used by patients with temporomandibular joint disorder, the functionality of the temporomandibular joint was improved and pain was decreased.

  • In this study, we have evaluated and classified arthritic pathology using the acoustical analysis of knee joint sounds. Six normal subjects and 11 patients with knee problems were enrolled. Patients were divided into the 1st patient group which required an orthopeadic surgery and the 2nd patient group of osteoarthritis. During sitting and standing periods, subjects' active knee flexion and extension were monitored. Fundamental frequency, mean amplitude of pitch, jitter and shimmer were analyzed according to the position and the joint angle. The result showed that the fundamental frequency of the 2nd patient group and standing position was higher than the others, and that the pitch of sounds changed unstably.

  • Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid state welding that could successfully weld the difficult-to-weldmaterials such as an aluminum alloy. In this welding process, the stirrer of the welding tool is one of the important factors for producing the perfect sound joint that indicates the higher joint strength. So, this report aims to apply the friction stir welding using various stirrer geometries to weld the AA6063-T1 aluminum alloy butt joint, investigates the mechanical properties of the joint and then compares the mechanical properties with the microstructure of the joint. An experiment was started by applying the friction stir welding process to weld a 6.3 mm thickness of AA6063-T1 aluminum alloy butt joint. A study of the stirrer geometries effect such as a cylindrical geometry, a cone geometry, a left screw geometry and a right screw geometry at a rotational speed of 2000 rpm and a welding speed of 50-200 mm/min was performed. The mechanical properties such as a tensile strength and a hardness of the joint were also investigated and compared with the microstructure of the joint. The results are as follows. A variation of FSW Stirrer shape directly affected the quality AA6063-T1 aluminum alloy butt joint. A cylindrical stirrer shape and a cone stirrer shape produced the void defect at the bottom part of the weld metal and initiated the failure of the joint when the joint was subjected to the load during the tensile test. Left and right screw stirrer shapes gave the sound joint with no void defect in the weld metal and affected to increase the joint strength that was higher than that of the aluminum base metal.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of knee joint sound in frequency domain and classify the knee joint diseases. The spectral analysis of knee joint sounds was performed using LPC(Linear Predictive Coding) and Wigner-Ville distribution. Ten normal subjects and 5 patients with meniscal tearing were enrolled. Each subject was seated on a chair and underwent active knee flexion and extension for 60 seconds. Sampling frequency was 10kHz and electronic stethoscope and electro-goniometer were applied during the knee motion for data collection. The spectral analysis showed 3 peaks in both groups and the difference energy distribution in time-frequency domain. These results suggest that the diagnosis of knee joint pathology using the auscultation could be easier and more correct.
