  • A man model can be used as an effective tool to design ergonomically sound products and workplaces, and subsequently evaluate them properly. For a man model to be truly useful, it must be integrated with a posture prediction model which should be capable of representing the human arm reach posture in the context of equipments and workspaces. Since the human movement possesses redundant degrees of freedom, accurate representation or prediction of human movement was known to be a difficult problem. To solve this redundancy problem, a psychophysical cost function was suggested in this study which defines a cost value for each joint movement angle. The psychophysical cost function developed integrates the psychophysical discomfort of joints and the joint range availability concept which has been used for redundant arm manipulation in robotics to predict the arm reach posture. To properly predict an arm reach posture, an arm reach posture prediction model was then developed in which a posture configuration that provides the minimum total cost is chosen. The predictivity of the psychophysical cost function was compared with that of the biomechanical cost function which is based on the minimization of joint torque. Here, the human body is regarded as a two-dimensional multi-link system which consists of four links ; trunk, upper arm, lower arm and hand. Real reach postures were photographed from the subjects and were compared to the postures predicted by the model. Results showed that the postures predicted by the psychophysical cost function closely simulated human reach postures and the predictivity was more accurate than that by the biomechanical cost function.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to retrospectively analyze the clinical results of screws and Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation in patients with fracture dislocation of Lisfranc joint and the consequence of screw breakage. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients underwent Lisfranc joint open reduction and removal of internal fixators from January 2007 to December 2011. Forty-nine cases (81.7%) underwent operations with screw alone, and 11 cases (18.3%) underwent operations with both screws and K-wires. Type of internal fixators, duration of internal fixator removal, breakage of internal fixators and satisfaction with reduction were investigated. Additionally, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) midfoot scales were analyzed. Results: The internal fixator was broken in 5 cases (8.3%). The average duration of instrument removal was 154 days in the non-broken screw group and 268.6 days in the broken screw group (p<0.05). The average AOFAS midfoot scale was 77.4 in the non-broken screw group and 74.2 in the broken screw group. The most commonly damaged portion was the first tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joint. Conclusion: Treatment with screws and K-wires was effective in patients with fracture dislocation of Lisfranc joint. The appropriate time for screw removal should be considered.

  • The purpose of this paper is to verify the practical effectiveness of an interphalangeal coordination-based joint motion planning method for humanoid finger operations. For the purpose, several experiments have been performed and comparative experimental results are shown. Through the experimental works, it is confirmed that according to the employed joint motion planning method, the joint configurations for a finger's trajectory can be planned stably or not, and consequently the actual joint torque command for controlling the finger can be made moderately or not. Finally, this paper analyzes that the interphalangeal coordination-based joint motion planning method is practically useful for implementing a stable finger manipulation. It is remarkably noted that the torque pattern by the method is well-balanced. Therefore, it is expected that the control performance of humanoid or prosthetic fingers can be enhanced by the method.

  • An optical adder for a modified signed-digit(MSD) number system using joint spatial encoding method is proposed. In order to minimize the numbers of symbolic substitution rules, nine input patterns were divided into five groups of the same addition results. For recognizing the input reference patterns, masks and reference patterns without any other spatial operations are used. This adder is implemented by smaller system in size than a conventional adder.

  • This paper derives the two-dimensional probability distribution and density functions of morphological dilation and erosion of a one-dimensional memoryless source and reports numerical results for a uniform source, thus providing methodology for joint distributions for other morphological operations. The joint density functions expressed in closed forms contain the Dirac delta functions due to the joint discontinuity within the dilation and erosion. They also exhibit symmetry between these two morphological density functions of dilated and/or eroded sources, in the computation of other higher moments thereof, and in multidimensional quantization.

  • Grasping and manipulation by hands can be considered as one of inevitable functions to achieve the performances desired in humanoid operations. When a humanoid robot manipulates an object by his hands, each finger should be well-controlled to accomplish a precise manipulation of the object grasped. So, the trajectory of each joint required for a precise finger motion is fundamentally necessary to be planned stably. In this sense, this paper proposes an effective joint motion planning method for humanoid fingers. The proposed method newly employs a bio-mimetic concept for joint motion planning. A suitable model that describes an interphalangeal coordination in a human finger is suggested and incorporated into the proposed joint motion planning method. The feature of the proposed method is illustrated by simulation results. As a result, the proposed method is useful for a facilitative finger motion. It can be applied to improve the control performance of humanoid fingers or prosthetic fingers.

  • The purpose of this research is to study customer-supplier relationships, particularly their partnerships, to help managers and practitioners successfully design, develop, implement and deploy tools and joint practices as a means for an effective supply chain management (SCM). To achieve this purpose, a total of 1,811 potential survey questionnaire respondents responsible for purchasing, sales/marketing, quality-, and production- or operations-related functions of U.S. private manufacturing companies in SIC 35, 36, and 37 were used to collect quantitative data. Using 172 usable survey questionnaire responses, eight hypothesized relationships were tested using two independent (joint use of specific tools and joint practices) and four dependent variables (informed partners, role integrity, conflict resolution, and mutuality). From the overall perspective (customer+supplier), organizations with higher levels of joint action have higher degrees of informed partners whereas organizations with higher levels of joint action resolve conflicts formally and do not have higher degrees of mutuality.
