Application of Fractal Theory to Various Surfaces

  • In this study, the general theory of fractality is discussed to provide a fundamental understanding of fractal geometry applied to heterogeneous material surfaces like pavement surface and rock surface. It is well known that many physical phenomena and systems are chaotic, random and that the features of roughness are found at a wide spectrum of length scales from the length of the sample to the atomic scales. Studying the mechanics of these physical phenomena, it is absolutely necessary to characterize such multi scaled rough surfaces and to know the structural property of such surfaces at all length scales relevant to the phenomenon. This study emphasizes the role of fractal geometry to characterize the roughness of various surfaces. Pavement roughness and rock surface roughness were examined to correlate their roughness property to fractality.

Automated Assembly Modeling using Kinematics Constraints (기구학적 구속조건을 이용한 자동 조립 모델링)

  • A common task in assembly modeling is the determination of the position and orientation of a set of components by solving the spatial relationships between them. Assembly models could be constructed at various levels of abstraction. They could be classified into component or geometry-level assembly models. The geometry-level assembly design approach using mating constraints such as against and fits is widely used in the commercial modelers, but it may be very tedious in some cases fur designer. In this paper, we propose a new method to construct an assembly model at the component-level by extracting joint mating features from the kinematics constraints specified between components. The assembly model constructed using the proposed method includes hierarchical and relational assembly models, component/sub-assembly positions and degrees of freedom information. The proposed method is more intuitive and natural way of assembly design and it guarantees the topological robustness of assembly modification such as component replacement and modification.

  • A finite element method based on the two-dimensional progressive failure analysis is presented for characterizing the strength and failure of the unidirectional-fabric hybrid laminated composite joints under pin loading. The 8-node laminated shell element is incorporated in the updated Lagrangian formulation. Various failure criteria including the maximum stress, Tsai-Wu, Yamada-Sun, and combinations of them are used in conjunction with the complete unloading stiffness degradation method. For the verification, joint tests are conducted for the specimens with various geometries. Although there are some differences depending on the geometry, the finite element model using the Yamada-Sun or the combined Yamada-Sun and Tsai-Wu criterion predicts the failure strength best.

No Blind Spot: Network Coverage Enhancement Through Joint Cooperation and Frequency Reuse

  • Both coordinated multi-point transmission and frequency reuse are effective approaches to mitigate inter-cell interference and improve network coverage. The motivation of this work is to explore the manner to effectively utilize the spectrum resource by reasonably combining cooperation and frequency reuse. The $Mat{\acute{e}}rn$ cluster process, which is appropriate to model networks with hot spots, is used to model the spatial distribution of base stations. Two cooperative mechanisms, coherent and non-coherent joint transmission (JT), are analyzed and compared. We also evaluate the effect of multiple antennas and imperfect channel state information. The simulation reveals that the proposed approach to combine cooperation and frequency reuse is effective to improve the network coverage for users located at both the center and the boundary of the cooperative region.

  • The effect of out-of-plane loads on the fatigue strength of welded steel structures is examined through fatigue tests with weldment of two fillet weld joint types. The results of the fatigue tests are compared with those under axial loads, on the basis of the hot spot stress range at the weld toe. From the result of the comparison, a method on how to incorporate the effect of the out-of-plane bending stress is proposed using design S-N curves derived from fatigue tests under the axial load. The proposed method is useful for rational assessment of the fatigue strength of fillet-welded structures, where combined stresses of the in-plane axial stress and the out-of-plane bending stress are induced simultaneously due to the complexity of applied loads and structural geometry.

  • In this paper, we focus on a configuration control method of a redundant manipulator. The configuration of a redundant manipulator has been determined by geometry constraints and additional conditions, such as obstacle avoidance and dexterity optimization. This paper also utilizes optimization, and the additional condition (or performance index) to be optimized is stiffness of the end-effector and joints' torque. Stiffness and torque may be a natural attribute to be controlled during working and those vary as manipulator configuration does.   • The kinematics and control problem of a visual alignment system is investigated, which plays a crucial role in the fabrication process of flat panel displays. The first solution is the inverse kinematics of a 4PPR parallel alignment mechanism. It determines the driving distance of each joint to compensate the misalignment between mask and panel. Second, an efficient vision algorithm for fast alignment mark recognition is suggested, where by extracting essential feature points to represent the geometry of a mark, the geometric template matching enables much faster object recognition comparing with the general template matching. Finally, the overall visual alignment process including the kinematic solution, vision algorithm, and joint control is implemented and experimental results are given.

Fatigue Life Estimation of Welded Joints by using Mk-factor under a Propagation Mechanism of Multiple Collinear Surface Cracks (Mk-계수를 고려한 용접부 복수 표면균열 진전수명 평가)

  • Failure mechanisms of welded joints under fatigue loads are interpreted that multiple collinear surface cracks initiating randomly along the weld toes propagate under the mutual interaction and coalescence of adjacent two cracks. To estimate fatigue crack propagation life for three types of the representative welded joints, i.e. non-load carrying cruciform, cover plate and longitudinal stiffener joint, the stress intensity factors at the front of the surface cracks have to be calculated, which are influenced strongly by the geometry of attachments, weld toes and the crack shapes. For the effective calculation of the stress intensity factors the Mk-factor was introduced which can be derived by a parametric study performed by FEM considering influence of the geometrical effects. The fatigue life of the cruciform joint was estimated by using the Mk-factors and the method considering the propagation mechanisms of the multiple surface cracks. Analysis results for the fatigue life had a good agreement with that of experiment.

  • This paper propose section properties factor to generate stress history for fatigue analysis and safety inspection of steel bridge. A methodology is described for the computation of numerical stress histories in the steel truss bridge, caused by the vehicles using section properties factor. The global 3-D beam model of bridge is combined with the local shell model of selected details. Joint geometry is introduced by the local shell model. The global beam model takes the effects of joint rigidity and interaction of structural elements into account. Connection nodes in the global beam model correspond to the end cross-section centroids of the local shell model. Their displacements are interpreted as imposed deformations on the local shell model. The load cases fur the global model simulate the vertical unit force along the stringers. The load cases fer the local model are imposed unit deformations. Combining these, and applying vehicle loads, numerical stress histories are obtained. The method is illustrated by test load results of an existing bridge.

  • Turbulent nonpremixed $H_2$-air jet flames are numerically investigated using the joint PDF model. The reaction progress variable is derived by assuming the radicals 0, H, and OH to be in partial equilibrium and additional species $HO_2$ and $H_2O_2$ in steady state. The model is extended to npnadiabatic flame by introducing additional variable for the transport of enthalpy and radiative source term is calculated using a local, geometry independent model. In terms of flame structure and NO formation, the predicted results are favorably agreed with experimental data. The effects of nonequilibrium chemistry and radiative heat loss on the thermal NO formation are discussed in detail.
