  • During the ground operation of Korean army, the voice message is mainly used for exchanging informations related to the surveillance and reconnaissance, command and control, and precision strike. However, in order to the battlefield visualization among fighting powers participating in the ground force operation, automatic situational awareness and variable message format (VMF) for command and control are required. For securing core technologies necessary for the battlefield visualization, message standard and message handler are established through several applied researches. Besides, the VMF for equipping a weapon system is in development. In this paper, a study on the Korean variable message format (KVMF), where interoperability of integrated battle management system (BMS) is guaranteed due to performing joint, ground, and combined operations so that the situation awareness and strike system can be automated in almost real time, is presented. From the modeling and simulation (M&S) results of the message processor, delay time is varied in accordance with the number of nodes in unit platoon network, message length, and generation interval of routine messages. Therefore, it is shown that the system performance can be optimized by establishing proper network protocol for each situation.

  • Purpose: Recent development and advances in the arthroscopic surgical techniques for anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) reconstruction have led to the ideal location for more oblique anatomic point of the femur from 10 to 10:30 o'clock(in the right knee) and from 2 to 1:30 o'clock(in the left knee) in the frontal plane. This study was performed to compare the operative methods and the radiologic results of the femoral tunnels made through the tibial tunnel(trans-tibial approach) and the anteromedial portal. Materials and Methods: From January 2003 to May 2004, on hundred reconstructions of ACL were performed. Group I(the femoral tunnel made through the tibial tunnel) consisted of 50 cases and group I(the femoral tunnel made through the anteromedial portal) consisted of 50 cases. The operative methods and the radiographic results of the femoral tunnels were compared. Results: Femoral tunnel was made more easily at more oblique anatomic point in group II than in group I. In group II, better visual field was achieved at the angle of 100? flexion of the knee joint, the risks of the posterior cortical breakage and the tunnel-graft mismatching were reduced more, and the divergence of femoral interference screw from the radiograph decreased more than in group I(p<0.05). The angle between the femoral tunnel and the longitudinal axis of ACL increased in group II. Conclusion: Anteromedial portal technique was useful for femoral tunneling toward 10 to 10:30 o'clock(in the right knee) and 2 to 1:30 o'clock(in the left knee) in ACL reconstruction. Level of Evidence:Level III, case-control study.

  • Proposed in the paper is a methodology to generate kinematic template for 3D JIG models. Recently, according to increase of the rate of automatic facility in manufacturing system, the 3D manufacturing and verification research and development have been issued. So, unlike in the past, moving 3D facilities are very various like JIGs, turn table, AS/RS worked in the automated manufacturing industry. Because 3D mesh models are used in these kinds of 3D simulation, users have to define the kinematic information manually. This 3D mesh data doesn't have parametric information and design history of the 3D model unlike the design level data. So, it is lighter than 3D design level data and more efficient to render on the 3D virtual manufacturing environment. But, when user wants to find a common axis located between the links, the parameter information of the model has to reconstruct for defining kinematic construction. It takes a long time and very repetitive to define an axis and makes a joint using 3D mesh data and it is non-intuitive task for user. This paper proposed template model that provides kinematic information of the JIG. This model is kinds of a state diagram to describe a relation between links. So, this model can be used for a kinematic template to the JIG which has a same mechanism. The template model has to be registered in the template library to use in the future, after user made the model of the specific type of the 3D JIG model.

  • The configuration of a musculoskeletal (MS) system is closely related to the individual motions of the human body. Many researches have been focused on evaluating the associations between the MS configuration and the individual motion using patient-specific MS models, but it still remains a challenging issue to accurately predict the motion by differed configurations of the MS system. The main objective of this paper is to predict the changes of a patient-specific gait by altering the geometric parameters of the hip joint using function-based morphing method (FBM). FBM is suitable for motion analysis since this method provide a robust way to morph a MS model while preserving the biomechanical functions of the bones. Computed-muscle control technique is used to calculate the muscle excitations to reproduce the targeted motion within a digital MS model without the motion-captured data. We applied this approach to a patient who has an abnormal gait pattern. Results showed that the femoral neck length and the angle significantly affect to the motion especially for the hip abduction angle during gait, and that this approach is suitable for gait prediction.

  • It is well recognized that the availability of prompt, effective and economical means of dispute resolution is an important element in the orderly growth and encouragement of international trade and investment. Increasingly, arbitration, instead of litigation in national courts, has become the preferred means of resolving private international commercial disputes. Under the situation, it will be important thing for arbitral institutions to reach an agreement to promote the dispute settlement of the commercial disputes, for which efforts have been made between the Korean Commercial Arbitral Board(KCAB) and principal arbitration institutions of the foreign countries. Since 1973, the KCAB has entered into many arbitration agreements with well-known foreign institutions of arbitration. If the place of arbitration is not so designated by the parties, it, as a general rule, shall be the country of the respondent(s) under the Korea-Japanese Arbitration Agreement. On the other hand, the U.S.-Korean Commercial Arbitration Agreement maintains 'Joint Arbitration Committee which finally decide the place of arbitration. In 1996, the Korea-Austria Agreement of Cooperation was concluded for the prompt and equitable settlement on an amicable basis of commercial disputes. Under this Agreement, arbitral institutions between Korea and Austria agreed to act as an appointing authority in accordance with the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. It is also very important for Korea and China including North Korea to cooperate each other for the settlement of the commercial disputes within the Pan Yellow Sea Economic Bloc(PYSEB). The PYSEB is quickly becoming a distinctive and crucial region in the world sharing geographical proximity, many common historical experiences, and similar cultural norms and values although they have disparities in stages of development, trade and economic policies, and financial and legal frameworks. Finally, it should be considered to establish a central common system for settlement promotion of the commercial disputes within the PYSEB through the arbitration agreement. Such a dispute resolution system was already introduced and established within the area of the NAFTA, and it is called the Commercial Arbitration and Mediation Center for the Americas(CAMCA).

  • Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) undergo changes in shape and hardness when heated or cooled, and do so with great force. Since wire-type SMAs contract in length when heated and pull with a surprisingly large force and move silently, they can be used as actuactors which replace motors. These SMA actuators can be heated directly with electricity and can be used to create a wide range of motions. This paper presents the mechanical design and control for a three fingered, six degree-of-freedom robotic hand actuated by SMA actuators. Each finger has two joints and each joint is actuated with two tendons in the antagonistic manner. In order to create the sufficient force to make the smooth motion, the tendon is composed of two SMA actuators in parallel. For controlling the current to heat the SMA actuators, PWM drivers are used. In experiments, the antagonistic interaction of fingers are evaluated.

  • The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing a next-generation coronagraph (NGC) in cooperation with NASA to measure the coronal electron density, temperature, and speed simultaneously, using four different optical filters around 400 nm. KASI organized an expedition to demonstrate the coronagraph measurement scheme and the instrumental technology during the 2017 total solar eclipse (TSE) across the USA. The observation site was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA. We built an eclipse observation system, the Diagnostic Coronal Experiment (DICE), composed of two identical telescopes to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The observation was conducted at four wavelengths and three linear polarization directions in the limited total eclipse time of about 140 seconds. We successfully obtained polarization data for the corona but we were not able to obtain information on the coronal electron temperature and speed due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the optical system and strong emission from prominences located at the western limb. In this study, we report the development of DICE and the observation results from the eclipse expedition. TSE observation and analysis with our self-developed instrument showed that a coronagraph needs to be designed carefully to achieve its scientific purpose. We gained valuable experience for future follow-up NASA-KASI joint missions: the Balloon-borne Investigation of the Temperature and Speed of Electrons in the Corona (BITSE) and the COronal Diagnostic EXperiment (CODEX).

  • A 6-year-old Thoroughbred mare presented to the Korea Racing Authority Equine Hospital with dropping of the left front fetlock due to an injury sustained while racing. Radiographic examination revealed a comminuted fracture of both proximal sesamoid bones of the affected fetlock. Arthrodesis of the fetlock joint using a broad dynamic compression plate with a tension band wire was performed as a salvage procedure for the future use as a broodmare. After surgery, however, a delayed union of the bones and surgical site infection was present for a prolonged period. Staphylococcus aureus was persistently identified from the surgical site, and antimicrobial therapies were based on antibiotic sensitivity tests, including regional perfusions. The removal and replacement of surgical implants associated with seropurulent discharge was based on coordinating the development of fetlock ankylosis and infection control over 13 months. Firstly, seven screws associated with surgical drainage were replaced and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and local antibiotics were placed into the surgical site to accelerate bone fusion at postoperative month 7. Further six screws, along with drainage, were removed at postoperative month 10. The plate and screws were removed from the limb due to the progression of bone fusion at postoperative month 13; BMP-2 and local antibiotics were also used. Delayed healing of arthrodesis due to surgical site infection and implant instability were treated by implant removals and antibiotic therapies, and the horse eventually showed improved weight-bearing ability of the affected limb.

  • In the unit modular construction, the unit module prefabricated in a factory with a high level of accuracy does not fit completely onto the ground-joint junction due to the low accuracy of the ground work. This difference in the level of accuracy can cause diverse problems, such as twisting the upper unit modules and loosening the connection between the module and the footing. On this background, the aim of this study is to develop a technique for adjusting the height of the prefabricated individual footing. To accomplish the aim, a height adjustment method using bolts and nuts is proposed, and a shop drawing and the construction sequence are also presented in this study. The structural safety is verified through a structure simulation. In the future, research will be conducted on a mock-up test of the height adjustment method developed in this study, and an analysis of economic feasibility will be performed in order to verify its constructability and usability.
