  • Islands are often habitats to unique species because they have different environmental conditions from the mainland and other islands. Another characteristic of islands is their limited natural resources, which has led island residents to heavily rely on traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and use resources sustainably. The so-called "Maeul landscape" shows the interrelationship of biological species and people's use of natural resources. Shinan-gun is an administrative district located in the southwestern part of Korea that forms an archipelago with huge tidal flat areas. Since long ago, people's use of these tidal flats shows a high degree of biocultural diversity. Maeul landscapes also show humans' adaptation to the natural environment. For instance, strong winds blowing mainly from the northwest have led people in Shinan-gun to create "Ushil," a windbreak forest with stone blocks to block wind from their villages and agricultural fields. At present, the transfer of TEK to future generations is at stake due to socio-economic changes that cause island populations to shrink and age rapidly. Islands are often regarded as good destinations for tourism, but attention should also be given to sustainable development due to the environmental characteristics of islands. International organizations are making efforts to curb the threats of global environmental problems especially on small islands. Their activities are aimed at seeking solutions that stress the central role of biocultural diversity in establishing the sustainable use of natural resources on islands. Joint efforts oflocal people and government authorities to protect and conserve the Maeul landscape should be encouraged.

  • A graph or topographic map can often convey larger amounts of information in a shorter time than ordinary text-based methods. To visualize information precisely it is necessary to collect all the geological information at design stage, but actually it is almost impossible to bore or explore the entire area to gather the required data. So, tunnel engineers have to rely on the judgement of expert from the limited number of the results of exploration and experiment. In this study, several programs are developed to handle the results of geological investigation with various data processing techniques. The results of the typical case study are also presented. For the electric survey, eleven points are chosen at the valley to measure the resistivity using Schlumberger array. The measured data are interpolated in 3-dimensional space by kriging and the distribution of resistivity are visualized to find weak or fractured zone. The correlation length appears to be around 5 to 20 meter in depth. Regression analyses were performed to find a correlation length. No nugget effect is assumed, and the topographic map, geologic formation, fault zone, joint geometry and the distribution of resistivity are successfully visualized by using the proposed technique.

  • If the fault occurs on the underground power cable systems, the fault current on the sheath has an influence on all sections of cable because it's returned through earth at the directly grounded point and operation point of SVL(Sheath Voltage Limiter) on each insulated joint box. Therefore, the earth resistance and the operation of SVL have an effect on the zero-sequence current, and then the impedance between relaying point and fault point is increased. That causes the overreach of distance relay. For these reasons, the distance relay algorithm for protecting an underground power cable systems hasn't been developed till now. In this paper, new distance relay algorithm is developed for protecting a underground power cable system using fuzzy inference system which is the one of ACI(Advanced Computational Intelligence) techniques. This algorithm is verified by EMTP simulation of real power cable system, and proves to effectively advance the errors

  • Selection for increased milk production in dairy cows has often resulted in a higher incidence of disease and thus incurred a greater health costs. Considerable interests have been shown in breeding dairy cattle for disease resistance in recent years. This paper discusses the limitations of breeding dairy cattle for genetic resistance in six parts: 1) complexity of disease resistance, 2) difficulty in estimating genetic parameters for planning breeding programs against disease, 3) undesirable relationship between production traits and disease, 4) disease as affected by recessive genes, 5) new mutation of the pathogens, and 6) variable environmental factors. The hidden problems of estimating genetic and phenotypic parameters involving disease incidence were examined in terms of categorical nature, non-independence, heterogeneity of error variance, non-randomness, and automatic relationship between disease and production traits. In light of these limitations, the prospect for increasing genetic resistance by conventional breeding methods would not be so bright as we like. Since the phenomenon of disease is the result of a joint interaction among host genotype, pathogen genotype and environment, it becomes essential to adopt an integrated approach of increasing genetic resistance of the host animals, manipulating the pathogen genotypes, developing effective vaccines and drugs, and improving the environmental conditions. The advances in DNA-based technology show considerable promise in directly manipulating host and pathogen genomes for genetic resistance and producing vaccines and drugs for prevention and medication to promote the wellbeing of the animals.

  • Purpose: The Purpose of this research was to develop the integrative exercise program for the elderly. Method: The first step was to survey the elder's health status and general health problems. The second step was to design the exercise type, intensity, time and frequency. Result: 1. Elders who implement the integrative exercise program had weaker health status, lower physical performance and more depression than any other places. 2. The integrative exercise program developed the preparation stage composed of stretching and Yudongkong-Ki exercise, the central stage was composed of range of motion exercise, muscle strength exercise and aerobic exercise with favorite and popular Korean music. The finishing stage was composed of joint rounding and Yudongkong-Ki exercise. The exercise intensity was RPE(rating perceived exertion) 10-11, maximal pulse rate 40-60%, duration started from 20min to 50min and frequency is 2-3times/wk. Conclusion: The integrative exercise program developed by the researcher is tailored exercise that is more applicable to individual cases in community settings. Eventually, the program is safely applicable to the elders, and is expected to improve the elders' physical function and quality of life.

  • Treatment options are limited for young, meniscal-deficient patients with pain. This patient population is not age appropriate for total joint replacement, but the loss of the meniscus leaves them at significant risk for the development of osteoarthritis. One increasingly popular option is the use of allograft meniscal transplantation. However, many questions still surround allograft meniscus transplantation. Furthermore, most reports in the literature on the results of meniscal transplantation describe small case series using clinical outcome measures and/or incomplete direct evaluation of the meniscus. Therefore, the results of meniscal allograft transplantation have been difficult to interpret and compare due to many confounding variables. In this study, we reviewed the current research of concerns on the results of meniscal allograft transplantation.

  • This paper examines the impact of gender on access to debt finance among Vietnamese enterprises. The paper investigates data and variables retrieved from the World Bank Enterprise Survey dataset using five Probit models. The regression results suggest that there exist more unfavourable debt financing conditions for women-led firms (WLF), measured as a lower probability of having loan applications fully approved. Firm's age, working sector, and perception of access to finance as a difficulty are found to have explanatory power on the discrimination. More importantly, the perception of debt finance as a difficulty or firms' level of confidence significantly explains the variance of the dependent variable of probability of loan approval, or gender effect would be more pronounced if the firm already has a low level of confidence. The paper also contributes in testing for the gender effect on Vietnamese enterprises from different sectors and scale, unlike other prior research papers focusing on specific sectors and/or small and medium enterprises only. The findings are highly useful for Vietnamese credit institutions to set out a specific business policy to attract more WLFs and help promoting gender equality in the working environment, especially in debt financing, which is often neglected in existing regulation and policy frameworks.

  • Exploitation of transboundary oil and gas on continental shelves may cause conflicts between or among States concerned due to the physical character of these resources. As oil and gas are fluid, exploitation of such a transboundary oil field by one side may affect other parties in other jurisdictions. However, there is no universal international legal regime on the issue. This article tries to find the international legal regime governing such resources through analysing UN Assembly's resolutions, UNCLOS, international judicial opinions, bilateral agreements and ILC activities relating to transboundary natural resources. As a result of this study, it seems that each coastal State has an inherent sovereign right on its part of the transboundary oil and gas deposit, but this right is not unlimited. Each state involved with the deposit has a duty to cooperate with other states-through information exchange, consultation, and negotiation. Furthermore, the state has an obligation to refrain from unilateral action when there is a possibility of causing irrevocable damage to the interests of the other states.

  • Objective : The college of Korean medicine uses a variety of Korean medical classics. Thus, in order to overcome the natural difference of the details of their curriculum, this paper aims to study the usage of Flipped Learning as a way of standardizing the curriculum that teach Korean medical classics. Method : One effective teaching and learning methodology, which is called for by the changing educational paradigm, is Flipped Learning. To introduce this learning method, which is actively applied to different curriculum, the paper revises the goal of learning objectives and introduces a teaching model of Flipped Learning in order to suggest the standardization of Korean medical educations through the re-design of the curriculum for Korean medical classics. Result : The professors of the Korean medical classics must work together to use the revised learning objectives and teaching model and create a set of lectures to serve as a basis of educational standardization. Conclusion : The standardization of the education of Korean medical classics through the Flipped Learning method could pre-emptively deal with the Korean medical doctor's capacity model that is in development now.
