  • Failure process, mode and strength of unidirectional composite single lap bonded joints were investigated experimentally with respect to bonding methods, those are, co-curing with and without adhesive and secondary bonding. The co-cured joint specimens without adhesive had the largest failure strength. Progressive failures along the adhesive layer occurred in the secondary bonded specimens. In the co-cured specimens with adhesive film which had better material strength and adhesion performance, delamination failure occurred and the joint strengths were less than those of secondary bonded specimens. Delamination failure did not occur in the secondary bonded specimens because of earlier crack growth and progressive failure in the adhesive layer. Therefore, failure strength of composite bonded Joints were not always proportionate to material strength and adhesion performance of the adhesive due to the weakness of delamination in composite materials. The effects of surface roughness, bondline thickness and fillets were also studied on secondary bonded specimens.

  • The effects of interaction between concrete-gypsum interface and edge crack on the failure behavior of the specimens in senicircular bend (SCB) test were studied in the laboratory and also simulated numerically using the discrete element method. Some quarter circular specimens of gypsum and concrete with 5 cm radii and hieghts were separately prepared. Then the semicircular testing specimens were made by attaching one gypsum and one concrete sample to one another using a special glue and one edge crack is produced (in the interface) by do not using the glue in that part of the interface. The tensile strengths of concrete and gypsum samples were separately measured as 2.2 MPa and 1.3 MPa, respectively. during all testing performances a constant loading rate of 0.005 mm/s were stablished. The proposed testing method showed that the mechanism of failure and fracture in the brittle materials were mostly governed by the dimensions and number of discontinuities. The fracture toughnesses of the SCB samples were related to the fracture patterns during the failure processes of these specimens. The tensile behaviour of edge notch was related to the number of induced tensile cracks which were increased by decreasing the joint length. The fracture toughness of samples was constant by increasing the joint length. The failure process and fracture pattern in the notched semi-circular bending specimens were similar for both methods used in this study (i.e., the laboratory tests and the simulation procedure using the particle flow code (PFC2D)).

  • Purpose: As the esthetic demands of dental implant patients are increased, the demands of zirconia as implant abutment material are also increased. It has non-metalic color, good biocompatibility, high strength and high toughness. Even thought the advatage of zirconia abutment, there are a few studies about mechanical properties of zirconia abutment. This study evaluated the mecanical strength with compressive bending strength and endurance limit of implant-zirconia abutment assembly. Materials and Methods: Static and cyclic loading of implant-Zirconia abutment assembly were simulated under worst case condition according to ISO. Test groups were implants of external butt joint with straight regular diameter and angled regular diameter zirconia abutment, implant of external butt joint with narrow straight diameter zirconia abutment and implant of internal conical joint with straight narrow diameter zirconia abutment. All test group were evaluated the mecanical strength with compressive bending strength and endurance limit. After fatique testing, fracture surface were examined by SEM. Results: The compressive bending strengths exceed 927N. Regular diameter zirconia abutment were stronger than narrow diameter zirconia abutment(P<.05). The endurance limits ranged from 503N to 868N. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, zirconia implant abutment exceeded the estabilished values for maximum incisal biting forces reported in the literature.

  • This paper presents a framework how to estimate crack driving forces in terms of crack-tip opening displacement and J-integral for mismatched dissimilar joints with interface cracks. The mismatch in elastic, thermal, and plastic hardening properties is not considered, but the mismatch in plastic yield strengths is emphasized here. The main outcome of the present work is that the existing methods to estimate crack driving forces for homogeneous materials can be used with slight modification. Such modification includes (i) mismatch- corrected limit load solutions, and (ii) evaluating the contribution of each material in dissimilar joints to the total crack driving force, which depends on the strength mismatch of the dissimilar joints.

  • Tubular joints having a large diameter in the offshore structure are reinforced using internal ring stiffener in order to increase the load carrying capacity. In this study, the static strengths of internally ring-stiffened tubular T-joints subjected to compressive brace loading are assessed. Nonlinear finite element analyses are used to compute the behavior of unstiffened and ring-stiffened T-joints. From the numerical results, internal ring stiffener is found to efficient in improving the ultimate capacity, and reinforcement effect are calculated. The influence of geometric parameters for members and ring is evaluated. Based on the FE results, regression analysis is performed considering practical sizes of ring stiffener, finally strength estimation formulae for ring-stiffened T-joints are proposed.

  • According to our fatigue tests carried out at 20 Hz, R=0.1 on transversely butt-welded joints, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens, that is, specimens having residual stress are higher than those of annealed specimens in short life range, but vice verse in long life range. This behavior seems to be concerned mainly with residual stress relaxation by applied loading. After analyzing the welding process, we conducted finite element analysis to quantify the degree of residual stress relaxation. By taking into account residual stress relaxation, modified Goodman diagram, and nominal stress, we evaluated the fatigue life of the welded joint from the S-N curve for the parent material. The estimated results are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This study examines the technical level of North Korea's S&T and identifies areas for potential North-South cooperation. First, North Korean media is analyzed for situations and trends from 2010 to 2015. Despite some commendable achievements, North Korean S&T remains lacking in basic science and commercialization potential. Despite an awareness of the importance of international cooperation, North Korea is hampered by international sanctions and their own caution, consequently concentrating their efforts on China. Details of their cooperation reflect their interests and needs to a certain extent, although their collaborations were mainly in the form of meetings and conferences rather than active joint research. To assess the potential areas of cooperation with South Korea, this study also draws on interviews with NGOs and professionals working with North Korea. The country's present situation is analyzed and some practical examples of possible cooperation is suggested. North Korea has the potential to expand its cooperation not only with South Korea but with many other countries. North Korea also promisingly expresses interest in cooperation.

  • Orthotropic laminates, such as [$0^{\circ}6$/$90^{\circ}6$]s and [$90^{\circ}6$/$0^{\circ}6$]s, were performed, using a commercial nonlinear finite element method. Interlaminar stress distributions, around the hole curve free-edge, were calculated. The delamination bearing strengths of pin joints were predicted, using the modified delamination failure criterion. These stress distributions were presented along the radial lines and around the free-edge of the hole. Further, three-dimensional non-linear contact analysis of orthotropic laminates was conducted to investigate the effect of friction. In this paper, laminates with a circular hole were taken to study interlaminar stresses the curved edge. This study may assist in the design of a thick composite laminate with mechanically pin joints.
