In this study, the flap fatigue test of a 48 m long wind turbine blade was performed for 1 million cycles to evaluate the characteristics of acoustic emission signals generated from fatigue damage of the wind blades. As the number of hits and total energy continued to increase during the first 0.6 million cycles, blade damage was constant. The rise-time result showed that the major aspects of damage were initiation and propagation of matrix cracks. In addition, the signal analysis of each channel showed that the most seriously damaged sections were the joint between the skin and spar, 20 m from the connection, and the spot of actual damage was observable by visual inspection. It turned out that the event source location was related to the change in each channel's total energy. It is expected that these findings will be useful for the optimal design of wind turbine blades.

The semi-automatic gas metal arc welding equipment was developed and the weldability of zinc coated steel pipes was evaluated in terms of strength, porosity and welding parameters including shielding gas composition. The good bead appearance and the reduction of porosity in the welds could be possibly obtained by adding $O_2$ to Ar. The strength and joint efficiency of welds made by the semi-automatic welding equipment was about 1.8 times higher compared with welds manually made. The integrity of welds was confirmed by the water pressure test as well, Finally, it is expected that the weld productivity will be enhanced even unskilled welders can produce quality welds by operating the semi-automatic welding equipment.
Direct shear tests have been initiated to understand the characteristics of joints which crucially affect the stability of rock mass. In this research, numerical approach in direct shear tests has been initiated using 3DEC on the basis of 3D distinct element method. Normal loads were altered in four different levels on artificial joint tests depending on the sawtooth angle and strengths on constant normal stress conditions, measuring the peak shear strength according to the direct shear tests under laboratory condition. Also results obtained from mechanical properties through laboratory test were used to perform numerical modeling, and shear strength obtained from the modeling was used to compare with laboratory direct shear test. As a result numerical analysis from distinct element method can simulate well on the shear behavior of rockmass.

Recently, the repair and recycling of damaged mechanical parts via metal additive manufacturing processes have been industrial points of interest. This is because the repair and recycling of damaged mechanical parts can reduce energy and resource consumption. The directed energy deposition(DED) process has various advantages such as the possibility of selective deposition, large building space, and a small heat-affected zone. Hence, it is a suitable process for repairing damaged mechanical parts. The shaft is a core component of various mechanical systems. Although there is a high demand for the repair of the shaft, it is difficult to repair with traditional welding processes because of the thermal deformation problem. The objective of this study is to propose a repair procedure for a damaged shaft using the DED process and discuss its applications. Three types of cases, including a small shaft with a damaged surface, a medium-size shaft with a worn bearing joint, and a large shaft with serious damage, were repaired using the proposed procedure. The microstructure and hardness were examined to discuss the characteristics of the repaired component. The efficiency of the repair of the damaged shaft is also discussed.
The effect of high shear speed on shear force, shear energy and fracture surface was investigated for the solder joint of a $Sn-_{3.0}Ag-_{0.5}Cu$ ball. For both ENIG and OSP pads, the shear force increased with an increase in shearing speed to 0.3 m/s. However, for an ENEPIG pad, the shear force increased with an increase in shear speed to 0.6 m/s and kept almost constant afterward. The shear energy decreased with an increase in shearing speed for ENIG and OSP pads. For the ENEPIG pad, however, the shear energy almost remained constant in a shearing speed range 0.3-3.0 m/s. The fracture mode analysis revealed that the amount of brittle fracture for the ENIG and the OSP pads increased with shearing speed, and a complete brittle fracture appeared at 1.0 m/s for ENIG and 2.0 m/s for OSP. However, the ENEPIG pad showed only a ductile fracture until 0.25 m/s, and a full brittle fracture didn't occur up to 3.0 m/s. The fracture mode matched well with the shear energy. The results from the high speed shear test of SAC305 were similar to those of SAC105.
The research investigates experimentally the effect of confinement on structural behavior at the ends of beam-column in reinforced concrete (RC) frames. In the experimental study, five specimens consisting of 1/3-scaled RC frames having single-bay, representing the traditional deficiencies of existing buildings constructed without receiving proper engineering service is investigated. The RC frame specimens were produced to represent most of the existing buildings in Turkey that have damage potential. To decrease the probable damage to the existing buildings exposed to earthquakes, the carbon Textile Reinforced Mortar (TRM) strengthening technique (fully wrapping) was used on the ends of the RC frame elements to increase the energy dissipation and deformation capacity. The specimens were tested under reversed cyclic lateral loading with constant axial loads. They were constructed satisfying the weak column-strong beam condition and consisting of low-strength concrete, such as compressive strength of 15 MPa. The test results were compared and evaluated considering stiffness, strength, energy dissipation capacity, structural damping, ductility, and damage propagation in detail. Comprehensive investigations of these experimental results reveal that the strengthening of a brittle frame with fully-TRM wrapping with non-anchored was effective in increasing the stiffness, ductility, and energy dissipation capacities of RC bare frames. It was also observed that the frame-only-retrofitting with an infill wall is not enough to increase the ductility capacity. In this case, both the frame and infill wall must be retrofitted with TRM composite to increase the stiffness, lateral load carrying, ductility and energy dissipation capacities of RC frames. The presented strengthening method can be an alternative strengthening technique to enhance the seismic performance of existing or moderately damaged RC buildings.
Prediction of the load-bearing capacity of an adhesive-bonded Joint is of practical importance for engineers. This paper introduces interface fracture mechanics approach to predict the load-bearing capacity of composite metal bonded joints. The adhesion strength of composite/steel bonding is evaluated in terms of the energy release rate of an interfacial crack and the fracture toughness of the interface. Virtual track closure technique (VCCT) is used to calculate energy release rates, and hi-material end-notched flexure (ENF) specimens are devised to measure the interfacial fracture toughness. Bi-material ENF specimens gave consistent mode II fracture toughness $(G_{IIc})$ values of the composite/steel interface regardless of the thickness of specimens. The critical energy release rates of double-lap joints showed a good agreement with the measured fracture toughness. Therefore. the energy-based interfacial fracture characterization can be a practical engineering tool for predicting the load-bearing capacity of bonded joints.
In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the constructability and seismic performance of high strength R/C interior beam-column joints regions, with or without the shear reinforcement, using high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar. Six specimens of retrofitted the beam-column joint regions using high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar are constructed and tested for their retrofit performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the interior beam-column joint regions (IJNS series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity due to the enhancement of crack dispersion by fiber bridging from using new high ductile materials for retrofitting. Specimens of IJNS series, designed by the retrofitting of high ductile fiber-reinforced mortar in beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 96~102.8% and its energy dissipation capacity by 0.99~1.11 folds when compared to standard specimen of SIJC with a displacement ductility of 5.
Fractures and segmentation in association with the activities of the Yangsan fault are studied around Mt. Namsan, Gyengju city in the southeastern part of Korea. It is believed that the higher values of joint density and fractal dimension with the approach of the center of the Yangsan fault mean intense fracturing due to the fault activity. The boundary between fault damage zone and host rock is inferred to be placed at about 2.7 km from the center of the Yangsan fault where the values of joint density and fractal dimension abruptly decrease and the orientations of joint are also much dispersed. The small faults within the damage zone of the Yangsan fault are definitely divided into right-lateral and left-lateral strike-slip faults. The former is considered to be formed during the right-lateral movement of the Yangsan fault and the latter during the left-lateral movement. The Yangsan fault is segmented in the study area with obvious evidences as follows: (1) the difference of fault strike between northern and southern segments, (2) The geometry of contractional imbricate fans and syncline plunging $9^{\circ}$, $S85^{\circ}E$ at the end of northern segment, and (3) anticline plunging $28^{\circ}$, $N4^{\circ}W$ at the end of southern segment.
In the present study, details of the TSC beam-to-PSRC column connection for low and middle seismic zones were developed. For ease construction, the top and bottom flanges of the steel section of the TSC beam were discontinuous at the joint face on purpose, while the web passes through the joint. Thus, tensile resistance of the top and bottom flanges is not considered in the calculation of nominal strength of the connection. Cyclic loading tests on two interior connections and an exterior connection were performed to verify the seismic performance. The test parameter for two interior connections was the depth of the TSC beams: 600 and 700 mm including the slab depth. The test results showed that the nominal strength of the connections predicted by KBC 2009 correlated well with the test results. The connection specimens exhibited relatively good deformation and energy dissipation capacities, greater than the requirements for the ordinary and intermediate moment frames. Ultimately, the connection specimens were failed at the story drift ratios of 3.0 to 4.0 % due to local buckling and tensile fracture of the web of the TSC beam passing through the joint. By modifying the existing provisions of ASCE, the joint shear strength of the TSC beam-PSRC column connection was evaluated.
