Glass base sealant is required as a ceramic-ceramic joining material between α-alumina insulation cap and β-alumina electrolyte tube in the development of NaS battery cell package for electrical energy storage system. The fabrication of glass frit by thermal quenching method, phase analysis, particle size analysis, coefficient of thermal expansion and surface roughness according to the glass compositions were analyzed for the fabrication of glass sealing paste for ceramic-ceramic joining. Also, a new evaluation method of the adhesion strength of glass sealant at the small area in ceramic-ceramic joining component was proposed using conventional Dage bond tester that was used to measure the adhesion of solder ball joint.
In this study, the bonding strengths of adhesively bonded joints are experimentally investigated. A series of lap-shear tests are conducted using single lap type adhesive joints. In order to analyse the joint fabrication factors that affected the bonding strength, the parametric tests are conducted with various thickness of adhesive, surface roughness and fillet of adhesive. In addition, for the comparative study with the welded joint, lap-shear tests using specimens with 2 welded sides and 4 welded sides are also carried out. The quantitative results of the strength analysis are summarized, and some proposals are made on setting up testing standards for adhesively bonded joints.
Major problems in welding Al-7020 include shrinkage, rpopositgy in welds and loss of strength in the heat affected zone. Thus it is important to examine the mechanical properties and reliability of welds. In this study, a series of experiments was carried out to determine the mechanical properties such as micro-hardness distribution, tensile strength, porosity and residual stress distribution of the Al-7020 weldment made by pulse-GMA welding. The resuts of the experiemnts are as folows. 1) The micro-hardness of weld metal and heat affected zone was lower than that of the base metal. 2) The tensile strength of the deposited metal was much lower than that of the base metal. 3) The porrosity in weld metal zone was negligible under the adopted conditsion of experiemnts. 4) The residual stress in the weld metal was lower than that of the heat affected zone, because the weld metal was softened. And the mciro-hardness distribution, the tensile strength and the residual stess distribution of the weldment in the as-welded condition were compared with those of the weldment after heat treatment.
Friction Welds are formed by the mechanisms of diffusion as well as mechanical inter-locking. The severe plastic flow at the interface by the forge action of the process brings the subsurface so close together that detection of any unbounded area becomes very difficult. No reliable method is available so fat to determine the weld quality nondestructively. The paper presents an attempt to determine weld strength quantitatively using the ultrasonic pulseecho method. The new approach calculates the coefficient of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes. This coefficient provides a single quantitative measurement which involves both acoustic energy reflected at the welded interface as well as transmitted across the interface. As a result, it was known that the quantitative relationship between the coefficient and the weld strength (torsional strength) could be drawn.
JLF-1 steel (Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta), reduced activation ferritic steel, is one of the promising candidate materials for fusion reactor applications. Tensile properties of JLF-1 base metal and its TIG weldments has been investigated at the room temperature, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength of base metal (JLF-1) showed the level between those of weld metal and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). When the test temperature was increased from room temperature to high temperature ($400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$), both strength and ductility decreased or base metal, weld metal and the HAZ. The longitudinal specimens of base metal represented similar strength and ductility at room temperature and high temperature, compared to those of transverse specimens. Little anisotropy for the rolling direction was observed in the base metal of JLF-1 steel.
In this report, a method to predict the fatigue strength in welded structure member of ship construction is studied considering the effects of statistical characteristics of mild steels and weld toe shapes on the fatigue crack initiation life. The fatigue test under pulsating bending load is carried out with the model specimens of the web frame in double bottom of ship hull. The propriety of the fatigue life curve with probability of failure in the transverse strength members of ship hull construction is confirmed by the comparison with the results of fatigue test on the model of the various transverse strength members.
Spot welding is a process that sheet metals are joined in one or more spot by heating at the faying interface. In this process, the spatter is dispersed from melted area. It has been reported that spatter generation has adverse effects on weld quality. However, no systematic study has been carried out to find out its effect on weld quality in resistance spot welding processes. In this study, specially designed specimen are used to perform experimental investigation of spatter generation and its effect. Major finding of this study show trends in tensile-shear strength for various amounts of spatter generated during spot welding process. Thus, optimum welding conditions are proposed in view of spatter generation and tensile-shear strength. (Received December 11, 2002)
This paper describes weldability of dissimilar metal plates with YAG laser for the use of a small-size electronic spring parts. Effects of welding conditions, combination of plates, thickness of upper plate are examined in relation to welding strength and microstructure of welded region. The obtained results are summarized as follows. Welding defects such as cavity and crack showed a tendency to easily occur in the case where 1) pulse duration is short, 2) laser power is high, 3) PBS plate with high thermal diffusivity is used for lower plate. Among these defects, the occurrence of cavity cased a drop of welding strength. This results from the reduction of welding area between upper and lower plates. In SK-5/SUS304 plates (thickness: 0.2/0.4mm/, welding strength was the highest in welding conditions: laser power is 30J/pulse, pulse duration 9ms, amount of defocus +2mm.
Stainless clad steels were made through hot rolling process. Backing plates employed in this study were HSLA steel and mild steel. The shear bond strength increased with an increase of the soaking temperature and time. It was also found that the shear bond strength increased with an increase of the reduction ratio. The threshold deformation was observed to be 20% and 10% respectively when the soaking conditions of 15 min. at 900.deg. C and 30 min. at 1000.deg. C were applied. Either the rolling or the transverse direction did not give any significant difference in the shear bond strength. Stainless steel-HSLA steel was superior to stainless steel-mild steel in the same range of magnitude. Because the above experimental results were in contrary to the existing mechanisms, the new model was proposed to describe the bonding mechanism and the void formation.
The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of the accelerated cooled (ACC) TMCP steel and its welded joint. From this study, it was confirmed that ACC TMCP steel has higher fatigue strength than conventional steels. After welding, however, the fatigue strength of ACC TMCP steel was deteriorated associated with HAZ softening when weld reinforcement was removed. On the other hand, with weld reinforcement, there is no effect of HAZ softening on the fatigue strength of welded joint because it is strongly dependant on the detail weld geometry i.e., stress concentration factor. Accordingly the fatigue strength of actual welded joint increases with decreasing the stress concentration factor of welded joint, regardless of HAZ softening.
