Subminiature joining bolts are required for the electronic parts of gadgets such as mobile phones and watch phones. During the miniaturization of bolt heads, it is difficult to obtain sufficient joining force owing to the risk of shear fracture of the bolt head or severe plastic deformation on the bit region. In this study, the maximum joining torque for the bit depth was predicted using finite element analysis. A shear fracture test was conducted on a wire used in bolt forming. The results of this test were subjected to finite element analysis and a fracture criterion was obtained by comparing the experimental and analysis results. The shear fracture of the bolt head during joining was predicted based on the obtained criterion. Furthermore, the maximum joining torque was predicted for various bit depths. Fracture on the boundary between the bolt head and thread was found to occur in lower joining torque as bit depth increases.

As the sizes of mobile phones and watch phones decrease, the joining bolt for the products should also be decreased to a miniature size. However, the miniature-sized bolt has to support sufficient joining and anti-releasing torque to keep the product fastened. In this study, the thread shapes are designed to improve anti-releasing performance of bolts. Especially, when bolt materials is stronger than nut materials, the design of thread shapes is needed, like bolt for wood, to improve the fastening capability. Through the joining and releasing analyses of bolts, the thread shapes for SUS302 bolt and Mg alloy nut are newly designed. It was shown that the newly designed bolt has 20 % higher anti-releasing torque and 35% lower torque loosening slope compared to the standard bolt.

The goal of this study is to replace the current forward 2-piece propeller shaft of 8 ton large truck made of steel with 1-piece composite propeller shaft. A low cost Glass/Epoxy composite propeller shafts were successfully developed, which satisfy requirements such as the capacity of static torque transfer, fatigue strength and bending natural frequency. Devising secure joining method of a composite tube and metal yoke was the most critical issue in successful development of a high torque composite propeller shaft. In this study, joining method using thermal interference fit was adopted for composite to metal joint. Optimum conditions of heating temperature and interference level of thermal interference fit were determined from thermal stress analysis using 3D finite element method. Static torsion test, fatigue test, RPM and balance test were performed to verify the design.
Recently, weight reduction of vehicles has been of great interest and consequently the use of low-density materials in the automotive industry is increasing every year. However, the substitution of one material for another is not simple because it accompanies several problems, for example, weakness in the strength and stiffness and difficulty in the joining. To overcome these problems, the structure of the automobile redesigned totoally. Aluminum spaceframe is rapidly being adopted as a body structure for accommodating lightness, stiffness and strength requirement. In aluminum spaceframe manufacturing, it is often required to join aluminum tube. However, there are few suitable methods for joining aluminum tube, so that much interest has been focused on testing suitable joining methods. Joining by electromagnetic forming (EMF) can be useful method in joining aluminum tube, which offers some advantages compared with the conventional joining methods. In this paper, joining by EMF was investigated as a pre-study for applying an automotive spaceframe. Finite element simulations and strength tests were performed to analyze the influence of geometric parameters on joint strength. Based on these results, configurations of axial joint and torque joint were suggested and guidelines for designing EMF joint were established.

As the size of electric products such as mobile phones and smart watches decrease, the bolts used to assemble these products should also be miniaturized. A miniature-sized bolt has to provide sufficient joining torque and anti-releasing torque to keep the components together. We studied a serrated bolt as a candidate for a miniature-sized fastener to increase the anti-releasing torque. In a serrated bolt, a serrated shape is formed on the bottom surface of the bolt head to create an obstacle to releasing. In this study, finite element analyses for the joining and releasing of bolts were carried out, and the anti-releasing performance was predicted. Based on the results of analyses using various numbers of serrations and fastening depths, the effects of the number of serrations and fastening depth on the anti-releasing performance were investigated.
This study is to develop the resistance welding apparatus and investigate the welding characteristics of Zircaloy-4 end-plate of fuel bundle in the cases of the resistance welding and the laser beam welding. The welding parameters which affect the weld nugget and the torque values have been also compared. The effect of the torque strength of end-plate welding using by the resistance welding and the laser beam welding has been studied and optimum conditions of Zircaloy-4 end-plate welding have been found. Futhermore, micro-structures and micro-hardness of the resistance welded specimens have been also compared.

This test focuses on the correlation between the lubrication, ductility and strength through the change of nut lubricant which decides joining angle for A490 bolt sets required in the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway & Transportation Officials). Because the lubrication of high tension bolt, nut, washer sets becomes an important factor to ductility and joining load, the quality improvement is required for improving reliability and securing enough lubrication of maker and user. This study examines the quality characteristics required in the specification through tests because only this standard specifies joining quality in the extreme conditions (as much about two times of the joining angle on site as normal condition). Moreover, this study is limited to the test on joining axial force required in the AASHTO for the three nut lubrication conditions of A490 bolt set. It is concluded that the nuts should be coated or waxed enough for the improvement of the joining axial force and ductility of bolts required in the standards. It is shown that in the case of plain high tension bolt sets, a rust preventing lubricative oil shall be applied and the torque coefficient value for A490 bolt sets should be maintained below 0.175.
Press fitting method for joining of a hybrid tube and steel ring with small teeth for automotive aluminum/composite hybrid propeller shaft was devised to improve reliability and to reduce manufacturing cost, compared to other joining methods such as an adhesively bonded joint, bolted joint or welded joint. To obtain high strength of the press fit joint, an optimal design method for the teeth was devised with respect to number and shape of the steel teeth. Torsional static, fatigue tests and finite element analysis of the press fit joint were performed with respect to experimental variables. The developed optimal design method predicted well the static torque capability and failure mode of the press fit joint. Also, it provided design guide line of press fit joint for improving torsional static and fatigue characteristics.

An analysis of a multi-pin remote welding for a DUPIC fuel fabrication was made to establish the optimum welding processes in a hot cell environment. An initial investigation for hands-on fabrication outside the hot cell was performed, and the constraints of a hot cell welding were considered. Preliminary welding performances to improve the RW process were also examined. The RW process was determined to be the best in a hot cell environment for joining the end plate to the end caps. This paper presents an outline of the developed RW machine for a DUPIC fuel fabrication and compares the characteristics of a Zr-4 end plate welding by using electrical resistance and LB methods. The weld nuggets of RW specimens and torque strengths of resistant and LB welded zones were also investigated.

A carbon/epoxy composite drive shaft used for the power transmission of the automobiles with steel joints. Compared with the metallic drive shaft, the composite one has the weight saving of 50% with equivalent torsional strength and fatigue characteristics. In this study, the filament winding technique for the composite tube and composite/metal joining technique are estabilished. The performance test of the drive shaft is carried out. The optimal condition of the surface roughness of the steel adherend was $1.5{{\mu}m}$ to $2.5{{\mu}m}$, and the optimal condition of the bonding thickness was 0.15mm. Maximum torque and torsional stiffness of the composite drive shaft manufactured by filament winding process were found to be $210kg{\cdot}m$ and $18.5kg{\cdot}m/deg$, respectively.
