  • Spatial joins find pairs of objects that overlap with each other. In spatial joins using indexes, original-space indexes such as the R-tree are widely used. An original-space index is the one that indexes objects as represented in the original space. Since original-space indexes deal with sizes of objects, it is difficult to develop a formal algorithm without relying on heuristics. On the other hand, transform-space indexes, which transform objects in the original space into points in the transform space and index them, deal only with points but no sites. Thus, spatial join algorithms using these indexes are relatively simple and can be formally developed. However, the disadvantage of transform-space join algorithms is that they cannot be applied to original-space indexes such as the R-tree containing original-space objects. In this paper, we present a novel mechanism for achieving the best of these two types of algorithms. Specifically, we propose a new notion of the transform-space view and present the transform-space view join algorithm(TSVJ). A transform-space view is a virtual transform-space index based on an original-space index. It allows us to interpret on-the-fly a pre-built original-space index as a transform-space index without incurring any overhead and without actually modifying the structure of the original-space index or changing object representation. The experimental result shows that, compared to existing spatial join algorithms that use R-trees in the original space, the TSVJ improves the number of disk accesses by up to 43.1% The most important contribution of this paper is to show that we can use original-space indexes, such as the R-tree, in the transform space by interpreting them through the notion of the transform-space view. We believe that this new notion provides a framework for developing various new spatial query processing algorithms in the transform space.

  • The inverted index widely used in the existing information retrieval field should be extended for XML documents to support containment queries by XML information retrieval systems. In this paper, we consider that there are two methods in storing the inverted index and processing containment queries for XML documents as the previous work suggested: using a RDBMS or using an inverted lift engine. It has two drawbacks to extend the inverted index in the previous work. One is that using a RDBMS is moth worse in the performance than using an inverted list engine. The other is that when containment queries are processed in a RDBMS, there is an increase in the number of a join operation as the path length of a query increases and a join operation always happens between large fables. In this paper. we extend the inverted index in a different way to solve these problems and show the effectiveness of using a RDBMS.

  • Understanding complex relationships among heterogeneous biological data is one of the fundamental goals in biology. In most cases, diverse biological data are stored in relational databases, such as MySQL and Oracle, which store data in multiple tables and then infer relationships by multiple-join statements. Recently, a new type of database, called the graph-based database, was developed to natively represent various kinds of complex relationships, and it is widely used among computer science communities and IT industries. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of using a graph-based database for complex biological relationships by comparing the performance between MySQL and Neo4j, one of the most widely used graph databases. We collected various biological data (protein-protein interaction, drug-target, gene-disease, etc.) from several existing sources, removed duplicate and redundant data, and finally constructed a graph database containing 114,550 nodes and 82,674,321 relationships. When we tested the query execution performance of MySQL versus Neo4j, we found that Neo4j outperformed MySQL in all cases. While Neo4j exhibited a very fast response for various queries, MySQL exhibited latent or unfinished responses for complex queries with multiple-join statements. These results show that using graph-based databases, such as Neo4j, is an efficient way to store complex biological relationships. Moreover, querying a graph database in diverse ways has the potential to reveal novel relationships among heterogeneous biological data.

  • XML data generally consists of a hierarchical tree-structure which is reflected in mechanisms to store and retrieve XML data. Therefore, when storing XML data in the database, the hierarchical relationships among the XML elements are taken into consideration during the restructuring and storing of the XML data. Also, in order to support the search queries from the user, a mechanism is needed to compute the hierarchical relationship between the element structures specified by the query. The structural join operation is one solution to this problem, and is an efficient computation method for hierarchical relationships in an in database based on the node numbering scheme. However, in order to process a tree structured XML query which contains a complex nested hierarchical relationship it still needs to carry out multiple structural joins and results in another problem of having a high query execution cost. Therefore, in this paper we provide a preprocessing mechanism for effectively reducing the cost of multiple nested structural joins by applying the concept of equivalence classes and suggest a query path reduction algorithm to shorten the path query which consists of a regular expression. The mechanism is especially devised to reduce path queries containing branch nodes. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the time requited for processing the path queries to 1/3 of the original execution time.

  • Despite the surge in the research for keyword search method over relational database, only little attention has been devoted to studying on relational data stream. The research for keyword search over relational data stream is intense interest because streaming data is recently a major research topic of growing interest in the data management. In this regard we first analyze the researches related to keyword search methodover relational data stream, and then this paper focuses on the method of minimizing the join cost occurred while processing keyword search queries. As a result, we propose an advanced keyword search method that can yield more meaningful results for users on relational data streams. We also propose a query optimization method using layered-clustering for efficient query processing.

  • A query processing is a critical issue in data warehouse environment since queries on data warehouses often involve hundreds of complex operations over large volumes of data. Data warehouses therefore build a large number of materialized views to increase the system performance. Which views to materialized is an important factor on the view maintenance cost as well as the query performance. The goal of materialized view selection problem is to select an optimal set of views that minimizes total query response time in addition to the view maintenance cost. In this paper, we present an efficient solution for the materialized view selection problem. Although the optimal selection of materialized views is NP-hard problem, we developed a feasible solution by utilizing the characteristics of relational operators such as join, selection, and grouping.

  • Real estate data can be big data. Because the amount of real estate data is growing rapidly and real estate data interacts with various fields such as the economy, law, and crowd psychology, yet is structured with complex data layers. The existing Relational Database tends to show difficulty in handling various relationships for managing real estate big data, because it has a fixed schema and is only vertically extendable. In order to improve such limitations, this study constructs the real estate data in a Graph Database and verifies its usefulness. For the research method, we modeled various real estate data on MySQL, one of the most widely used Relational Databases, and Neo4j, one of the most widely used Graph Databases. Then, we collected real estate questions used in real life and selected 9 different questions to compare the query times on each Database. As a result, Neo4j showed constant performance even in queries with multiple JOIN statements with inferences to various relationships, whereas MySQL showed a rapid increase in its performance. According to this result, we have found out that a Graph Database such as Neo4j is more efficient for real estate big data with various relationships. We expect to use the real estate Graph Database in predicting real estate price factors and inquiring AI speakers for real estate.

  • With the rapid growth of the Internet geographic information services through the WWW such as a location-based service and so on. Web GISs (Geographic Information Systems) have also come to be a cluster-based architecture like most other information systems. That is, in order to guarntee high quality of geographic information service without regard to the rapid growth of the number of users, web GISs need cluster-based architecture that will be cost-effective and have high availability and scalability. This paper proposes the design of the cluster-based web GIS with high availability and scalability. For this, each node within a cluster-based web GIS consists of main memory spatial databases which accomplish role of caching by using data declustering and the locality of spatial query. Not only simple region queries but also the proposed system processed spatial join queries effectively. Compare to the existing method. Parallel R-tree spatial join for a shared-Nothing architecture, the result of simulation experiments represents that the proposed spatial join method achieves improvement of performance respectively 23% and 30% as data quantity and nodes of cluster become large.

  • XML has already been settled down as a standard for the exchange of commercial data on the web. Though most institutions have a wish to use XML document as an EDI form for all sorts of document exchange, it is unfortune that previous commercial data is still saved in the relational form of data base. Therefore, it is necessary that data saved in the relational form of data base be transformed into XML document form for the better use of document exchange. In order to transform relational form of data base to XML, one solution is to publish XML document by way of mapping each field of the relational form of data base table onto XML. However, in the case of building one XML document out of more i~km two data base tables, a join should be performed since a mere mapping associated with DTD tan not solve the problem. In this paper, we build the view for the XML in which alignments generated from the join are presented. and then through this view the contents with the relational form of data base should be transformed into XML. Briefly speaking, This paper aims to propose algorithm concerned with this transformation and to realize it.

  • The I/O performance for spatial queries is extremely important since the handling of huge amount of multidimensional data is required in spatial databases for geographic information systems. Therefore, we describe representative spatial access methods handling complex spatial objects, z-transform B tree, KDB tree, R tree, MAX tree, to increase I/O performance. In addition, we measure the performance of spatial indexing schemes by testing against various realistic data and query sets. Results from the benchmark test indicates that MAX outperforms other indexing schemes on insertion, range query, spatial join. MAX tree is expected to use as index scheme organizing storage system of GIS in the future.
