This paper addresses scheduling heuristics for an assembly job-shop that includes at least an assembly process throughout its processes. The assembly job shop has certain characteristics not only considering the precedence relationship between the processes but also considering the processing progress between the parts. In addition, it probably presents a different processing time for the same product according to the order of processes and the point of workable time, due to the difference in the availability of equipments. The paper proposes several priority-based dispatching rules that consider these characteristics of the assembly job-shop, aiming to minimize the total tardiness of products in the shop floor. Computational tests showed that job due date based priority rules significantly outperform existing priority rules in terms of total tardiness.
Job shop scheduling is well-known as one of the hardest combinatorial optimization problems and has been demonstrated to be NP-hard problem. In the past decades, several researchers have devoted their effort to develop evolutionary algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for job shop scheduling problem. Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is a more recent evolutionary algorithm which has been widely applied and shown its strength in many application areas. However, the applications of DE on scheduling problems are still limited. This paper proposes a one-stage differential evolution algorithm (1ST-DE) for job shop scheduling problem. The proposed algorithm employs random key representation and permutation of m-job repetition to generate active schedules. The performance of proposed method is evaluated on a set of benchmark problems and compared with results from an existing PSO algorithm. The numerical results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is able to provide good solutions especially for the large size problems with relatively fast computing time.
This study presents the new dispatching rules for improving performance measures of job shop scheduling related to completion time and due dates. The proposed dispatching rule considers information, which includes the comparison value of job workload, work remaining, operation time, and operation due dates. Through computer experiments, the performance of the new dispatching rules is compared and analyzed with the existing rules. The results provide a guidance for the researchers to develop new dispatching rules and for practitioners to choose rules of job shop scheduling.
The Job Shop Scheduling Problem(JSSP) is concerned with schedule of m different machines and n jobs where each job consists of a chain of operations, each of which needs to be processed during an uninterrupted time period of a given length on a given machine. The purpose of this paper is to develop the efficient heuristic method for solving the minimum makespan problem of the large scale job shop scheduling. The proposed heuristic method is based on a Tabu Search(TS) and on a Constraint Satisfaction Technique(CST). In this paper, ILOG libraries is used to embody the job shop model, and a CST is developed for this model to generate the increased solution. Then, TS is employed to overcome the increased search time of CST on the increased problem size md to refine the next-current solution. Also, this paper presents the new way of finding neighbourhood solution using TS. On applying TS, a new way of finding neighbourhood solution is presented. Computational experiments on well known sets of MT and LA problem instances show that, in several cases, our approach yields better results than the other heuristic procedures discussed In literature.
Job shop scheduling with m different machines and n different jobs is a NP-hard problem of combinatorial optimization. The purpose of the paper is to develop the heuristic method using tabu search for job shop scheduling to minimize makespan or mean flowtime. To apply tabu search to job shop scheduling problem, in this paper we propose the several move methods that employ insert moves in order to generate the neighbor solutions, and present the efficient rescheduling procedure that yields active schedule for a changed operation sequence by a move of operations. We also discuss the tabu search techniques of diversifying the search of solution space as well as the simple tabu search. By experiments, we find the appropriate tabu list size and tabu attributes, and analyze the proposed tabu search techniques with respect to the quality of solutions and the efforts of computation. The experimental results show that the proposed tabu search techniques using long-term memory function have the ability to search a good solution, and are more efficient in the mean flowtime minimization problem than in the makespan minimization.
The objective of this paper is to develop the efficient heuristic method for solving the minimum makespan problem of the job shop scheduling. The proposed heuristic method is based on a constraint satisfaction problem technique and a improved randomizing search algorithm. In this paper, ILOG programming libraries are used to embody the job shop model, and a constraint satisfaction problem technique is developed for this model to generate the initial solution. Then, a improved randomizing search algorithm is employed to overcome the increased search time of constrained satisfaction problem technique on the increased problem size and to find a improved solution. Computational experiments on well known MT and LA problem instances show that this approach yields better results than the other procedures.
This paper proposes a heuristic method for job shop scheduling with alternative machines. Our heuristic suggests two machine-selecting rules and two priority dispatching rules for modifying existent ones considering alternative machines, and then it extends existing nondelay/active job shop schedule generation. This heuristic provides good criteria(rules) in the selection of a proper machine among those performing a specific operation and for the dispatch of an operation to a selected machine and thus these rules permit the efficient job shop scheduling with alternative machines. The performances of our two machine-selecting rules in addition to the two priority dispatching rules, applied together with the existing 17 rules, are experimented and evaluated, respectively.

In this study, a multi-objective robust job-shop scheduling (JSS) model was developed. The model considered multi-jobs and multi-machines. The model also considered uncertain processing times for all tasks. Each job was assigned a specific due date and a tardiness penalty to be paid if the job was not delivered on time. If any job was completed early, holding expenses would be assigned. In addition, the model added idling penalties to accommodate the idling of machines while waiting for jobs. The problem assigned was to determine the optimal start times for each task that would minimize the expected penalties. A numerical problem was solved to minimize both the makespan and the total penalties, and a comparison was made between the results. Analysis of the results produced a prescription for optimizing penalties that is important to be accounted for in conjunction with uncertainties in the job-shop scheduling problem (JSSP).
This paper presents a framework for the hierarchical PPC(Production Planning and Control) in make-to-order environment with job shop. The characteristics of the environment are described as : 1) project with non-repetitive and individual production, 2) short delivery date, 3) process layout with large scales manufacturing. 4) job shops. The PPC in a make-to-order typically are organized along hierarchical fashions. A model is proposed for the hierarchical job shop scheduling based on new concepts of production system, work and worker organization. Then, a new integrated hierarchical framework is also developed for the PPC based on concepts of the proposed job shops scheduling model. Finally, the proposed framework has been implemented in the Electric Motor Manufacturing and the results showed good performance.
