Marine Ecosystem Response to Nutrient Input Reduction in Jinhae Bay, South Korea

  • We study on the dynamic interaction with a simulated physical-biological coupled model response to nutrient reduction scenario in Jinhae Bay. According to the low relative errors, high regression coefficients of COD and DIN, and realistic distribution in comparison to the observation, our coupled model could be applicable for assessing the marine ecosystem response to nutrient input reduction in Jinhae Bay. Due to the new construction and expansion of sewage treatment plant from our government, we reduce 50% nutrient inputs near Masan Bay and sewage treatment plant. COD achieves Level II in Korea standard of the water quality from the middle of the Masan Bay to all around Jinhae Bay except the inner Masan Bay remaining at Level III. When our experiment reduces 50% nutrient inputs near Masan Bay and Dukdong sewage treatment plant simultaneously, COD decreases to about 0.1-1.2 mg/L $(128^{\circ}30'{\sim}128^{\circ}40'\;E,\;35^{\circ}05'{\sim}35^{\circ}11'\;N)$. The COD from the middle of the Masan Bay to Jinhae Bay achieves Level II.

진해만 특별관리해역의 대형저서동물의 시공간 분포 (Spatio-temporal Distribution of Macrobenthic Communities in Jinhae Bay, Korea)

  • In order to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of macrobenthic faunal communities in Jinhae Bay, quantitative faunal samples were collected seasonally at 23 sites in Jinhae Bay from February, 2011 to November, 2012. Sediment facies were found to be mud except for those at Chilcheon-do near Geoje Island. Mean values of TOC (%) ranged between 1.3 and 3.6%, and these are the highest values recorded excluding special management areas in Korea. Hypoxia occurred every summer in the whole areas of Jinhae Bay except around Geoje Island in the bay mouth. Due to the summer hypoxia, species richness, density and biomass also declined during the summer in Jinhae Bay. Opportunistic species such as Paraprionospio patiens, Sigambra bassi, Nectoneanthes oxypoda and Theora fragilis occurred as the dominant species before and after the hypoxia. However, Capitella capitata appeared as a dominant species only during the winter-spring season every year. From cluster analysis, Jinhae Bay could be divided into two sites groups: one group occupied the normoxic zone and the other one located in the hypoxic zone.

진해만 빈산소수괴의 경년변동 특성 (Annual Variation in Oxygen-deficient Water Mass in Jinhae Bay, Korea)

  • To improve the oxygen-deficient water mass (ODW), the spatial and temporal variation in the water quality and characteristic of ODW occurrence were analyzed using yearly water quality data from 1989 to 2006 in Jinhae Bay, Korea. In addition, we estimated $ODW_{area},\;ODW_{vol.}$ and $ODW_R$ for Jinhae Bay. The overall water quality improved during the 2000s, based the annual variation in dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, etc. A cluster analysis classified Jinhae Bay into the southwestern, central, northern, and eastern regions. ODW occurred throughout the southwestern region in 1993 and 2002-2004, and the estimated $ODW_{vol.}$ was about $1.92km^3$. ODW did not occur in the eastern region because circulating seawater was exchanged in that part of Jinhae Bay. As ODW was generated every year in the southwestern region, this is the most polluted area in Jinhae Bay. The ODWR decreased in the northern region, showing that the water quality there has improved since a wastewater treatment plant began operating in 1994.

진해만 대형 저서동물군집 분석을 통한 저서환경 평가 (Assessment of Benthic Environment based on Macrobenthic Community Analysis in Jinhae Bay, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 1998년 5월 진해만의 저서동물 군집분석을 통하여 진해만 저서환경의 오염 정도를 파악하기 위해서 수행되었다. 진해만 내에 모두 67개 정점을 선정하여 퇴적물 입도 조성과 저서동물상을 조사하였다. 주요 표층 퇴적상은 silty clay, clay로 지역별 차이가 크지 않았다. 전체 저서동물의 평균 서식밀도는 984개체/$m^2$이었고, 총 255종이 채집되었다. 가장 우점하는 동물군은 다모류로 총 90종이 채집되었고, 평균 773개체/$m^2$의 서식밀도를 보였다. 대체적으로 진해만의 서쪽 해역은 저서동물상이 빈약한 반면, 만 입구와 가덕도 사이의 수로역은 높은 서식밀도를 나타내었다. 우점종은 다모류, Lumbrineris longifolia(16.9%), Tharyx sp.(6.7%), Chone teres(4.7%), Glycinde sp.(4.2%), 이매패류 Theora fragilis(4.0%), 갑각류 Corophium sp.(4.0%) 등의 순으로 나타났다. 주요 우점종은 동쪽 입구 수로역에서 집중적으로 출현하였다. 종 조성과 출현개체수에 근거한 집괴분석의 결과 진해만은 모두 3개의 정점군, 즉 마산만 입구역과 진해만의 서쪽 해역(정점군 A), 만의 중앙해역(정점군 B), 가덕도와 거제도 사이의 외해역(정점군 C)으로 구분되었다. 3개 정점군 중 진해만의 서쪽해역을 포함하는 정점군 A의 저서동물 출현종수 및 평균서식밀도가 가장 낮았고, 만 중앙해역인 정점군 B가 가장 높은 서식밀도를 보였다. 섭식유형군별 출현비율에 의한 BPI값과 유기물 집적에 대한 내성/민감도에 근거하여 구분한 생태그룹별 출현비율에 의한 BC값은 서로 유사한 경향이었다. 두 지수 모두 내만역에서 높은 오염도를 나타내었고, 비교적 유속이 빠른 동쪽 입구 수로역과 외해역에서 낮은 오염도를 나타내었다. 진해만의 저서동물 서식밀도는 과거에 비해 큰 변화가 없거나 소폭 감소한 것으로 볼 수 있었다. 진해만에서 출현한 상위 우점종의 종조성은 과거에 비해 큰 변화는 없었으나 오염지시종이나 기회종의 출현비율이 다소 증가한 것으로 볼 수 있었다. BC값에 근거하여 진해만을 오염 구배에 따라 구분해 본 결과, 유속이 빠르거나 외해의 영향을 받는 일부 해역을 제외한 대부분의 해역이 모두 중간정도의 오염 지역(meanly polluted site)으로 분류할 수 있었으며, 특히 일부 내만역의 오염도는 심각한 수준(heavily polluted site) 이었다.

마산만 준설사업 및 하수처리장 가동에 따른 진해만의 수질변동 (Water Quality Variations in Jinhae Bay by Dredging & Operating the Sewage Disposal Plant)

  • This study investigates the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and relationships among water quality parameters, which based on 6 years' data(from 1989 to 1994) measured at 16 stations on Jinhae Bay. The results of these analysis, monthly variations range between surface and bottom layer of water quality had a tendency to increase and decrease, and appeared to be at the maximum value in August. The relationships between concentration of COD ana nutrients(DIN and DIP), which obtained by correlation analysis of water quality, were shown $85\%$ and $74\%$, respectively. Using the cluster analysis to develop the division of the sea basin by the dendrogram, before and after dredging of Masan bay and operating a sewage disposal plant, the variation characteristics of water quality of Jinhae Bay were discussed. Through it, we can see the serious pollution of northen sea basin of Jinhae Bay(B2) although dredging Masan bay and operating the sewage disposal plant. As the results, it doesn't appear the improvement effect of water quality in spite of carrying out the effort of water quality improvement.

저서오염지수를 이용한 진해만 해역의 저서건강도 평가 (The macrobenthic community health was assessed using the Benthic Pollution Index(BPI) in Jinhae Bay, southern coast of Korea)

  • 2011년 2월부터 2012년 11월까지 진해만에 23개 정점을 선정하여 저서오염지수를 이용하여 대형저서동물의 군집건강도를 평가해 보았다. 그 결과, 거제도 북쪽과 칠천도 부근의 정점을 제외한 모든 진해만 해역에서 저서동물군집의 건강도가 4~5등급으로 매우 오염된 상태인 것으로 나타났다. 특히 마산만과 고성만, 통영만의 일부 정점들에서는 기회종이 속한 4그룹의 비중이 90% 이상으로 나타났는데, 이는 저서환경이 오염되어 있음을 시사한다. 진해만에서는 마산만, 행암만, 통영만, 고현만에서 여름철 hypoxia 현상으로 인해 무생물 상태를 보였고, 종료 후 기회종이 대량 가입하는 양상을 보였다. 하지만 hypoxia 후 기회종이 가입되지 않은 일부 정점들이 관찰되었고, 이로 인해 저서건강도가 과대평가되는 현상에 대한 추가 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다. 진해만의 저서건강도는 경기만의 시화호, 부산항만 등 다른 특별관리해역들에 비해서도 매우 낮게 나타나 심각하게 오염된 저서환경임을 시사하였다.

Assessment of the Marine Environment in Masan-Jinhae Bay of Korea in Relation to Algal Blooms

  • Masan-Jinhae Bay, in Korea, is known for its frequent algal bloom outbreaks. This study was conducted in order to examine the environmental characteristics of the area, with the aim of identifying indicators that could be used to speculate about future algal blooms. The water temperatures and salinities in Haengam Bay, one of the small inner bays within Jinhae, appeared to re relatively higher than those in Masan and Jinhae bays, across most seasons. Furthermore, stratification begins to develop in all three regions from spring to summer as a result of the local heating effects and an increase in the efficient from the surrounding land. As a result, anoxic conditions appear near the bottom layer of the bay, leading to the deterioration of water quality, which has been identified as one of the causes of bloom outbreaks. Compared to Haengam and Jinhae bays, concentrations of DIN and DIP were remarkably higher in Masan Bay. However, the mean ratio of DIN to DIP was 3.3$\sim$13.6 in all three regions throughout the year, suggesting that nitrogen can function as a growth-limiting factor for phytoplankton. The results of mathematical models showed that cumulative organic pollutants may be a trigger for direct algal bloom occurrences, since residual tidal currents appeared to be less than $3\;cm\;\cdot\;s^{-1}$. Furthermore, computed DO concentrations in the four small inner bays of Jinhae during the summer appeared to be $3\;cm\;\cdot\;l^{-1}$ indicating a hypoxic state. Likewise, computed Chl-a concentrations turned out to be more than $0.01\;mg\;\cdot\;l^{-1}$, indicating eutrophication across most seasons. Based on the overall results, Masan-Jinhae Bay appeared to possess a very high potential for algal bloom outbreaks at anytime during the year.

퇴적물내 Coprostanol을 이용한 진해만의 도시하수오염 평가 (Evaluation of Sewage Pollution by Coprostanol in the Sediments from Jinhae Bay, Korea)

  • Surface sediment samples from 31 stations in Jinhae Bay were analyzed to evaluate the pollution by sewage from the spatial distribution of the fecal sterol, coprostanol. The sums of eight sterols (coprostanol, epicholestanol, epicoprostanol, cholesterol, cholestanol, brassicasterol, stigmasterol and $\beta$-sitosterol) were in the range of $2,703-27,154{\cal}ng/{\cal}g$ dry weight. The concentrations of the coprostanol in the sediments, which is a good tracer of sewage-derived organic contamination, were in the range of $76-3,964{\cal}ng/{\cal}g$ dry weight. The levels of coprostanol were much higher (almost one order of magnitude) at stations close to the big cities such as Masan and Jinhae. However, those levels were comparable to or lower than those previously reported in other foreign locations. Some ratios of coprostanol to other sterols and multivariate analysis could provide us with the information on the origin of the sterols being from sewage, plankton, and/or benthos. Those showed sewage dominance at the stations near the cities Masan and Jinhae, plankton dominance at the center of Jinhae Bay and mainly marine fauna origin at the mouth of Jinhae Bay. These results suggest that the contents of sterols and some ratios of these components are quite powerful tracer for the detection of the origin of the organic contaminants in the coastal environments.

AHP 기법 기반 진해만 태풍 피항지 내 안전대책에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Safety Measures for Typhoon Shelter in Jinhae Bay Based on AHP Assessment)

  • 진해만 해역은 태풍 내습 시에 우리나라 남동권 해역의 주요 태풍 피항지로 이용되고 있다. 하지만 태풍 내습 시 진해만 내 선박이 폭주하고 주묘가 다수 발생하는 등 해양사고 발생 가능성이 존재한다. 본 논문은 태풍 내습 시 진해만 피항지에 대해 안전 확보 및 효율적으로 관리할 수 있는 방안을 해당 해역의 VTS 관제사로부터 도출하고, 이를 선박 운항자에게 AHP 기법을 통하여 상대적 중요도를 도출하여 관리자와 이용자 의견이 반영된 안전대책을 제시하였다. AHP 설문조사를 위한 안전 대책 요소를 선정하기 위하여 진해만 내 태풍 내습 시 VTS 관제사의 대응 조치 평가 내용에 대해 분석하였다. 선정된 안전대책 요소를 기반으로 설문조사를 실시한 결과, 선정된 요소에 대해 선박 운항자는 선박의 안전을 효율적 관리보다 약 2배 이상 중요하게 생각하며, 종합적으로 피항선 관리, 정박구역 관리, 피항정보 관리, 규정 및 지침 마련, 시스템 장비 개선, 교육 및 홍보·알림 활동 순으로 중요하게 고려함을 파악하였다. 본 논문에서 식별된 방안 및 상대적 중요도를 통해서 진해만 태풍 피항지를 안전하고 효율적으로 관리하는 기반이 될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

진해만 담치 양식장내 지중해담치의 생산력 평가 (Assessment on the Productivity of Mytilus galloprovincialis on the Mussel Culture Ground in Jinhae Bay)

  • This study have conducted to calibrate the productivities on the mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) cultures in Jinhae Bay. Annual water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen have varied to 7.2-$25.9^{\circ}C$, 32.9-34.0 psu, 7.9-8.7 mg/l, respectively. In April, the smallest size of spat, 3.3 mm in shell length, have recruited, and 82.5 mm have recorded to the maximum. In summer, variations of growing up between individuals showed both shell length and weights at same cohort. Annual production at 2 m, 5 m, 8 m depth calculated to 10.91, 10.85 and 9.19 gWWt/ind./yr, respectively. Mussel cultivated in the upper part of the water column (two meter depth) were significantly longer and heavier than those in lower part (eight meter depth). After the recruitment, monthly production showed gradual increment at all positions during summer. As results, annual production of mussel cultivated seemed to be controlled by conditions of growing up in summer. Based on the productivities calculated to this study, the total annual production of the mussel cultivated in Jinhae Bay have estimated about 196 ton/ha/yr.
