  • In this study, mixing and dilution characteristics of vertical multijet discharged by multiport diffuser into stagnant water are investigated. The results obtained from the experiment of multiport diffuser performed in the three dimensional flume are as follows. As far as merging process of multiport diffuser is concerned, merging starts at about z/l = 3 although merging length is dependent upon stability condition and thereafter lateral temperature distribution becomes gradually uniform which is typical distribution of plane jet. Analyses of experimental data for minimum dilution show that characteristics of minimum dilution are described based on three regions which are jet region where momentum is dominated, intermediate region, and plume region where buoyancy is dominated. Minimum dilution coefficient in plume region of multiport diffuser obtained in this study is 15% higher than that of plane diffuser. This is because individual jet of multiport diffuser entrains more ambient water before merging is occurred, and therefore dilution increases.

  • A ship operating in rough sea may suffer from an undesirable motion which may severely degrade the performance of equipment onboard and give a person an uncomfortable feeling. Hence, roll stabilization received a considerable attention and various devices including bilge keels, stabilizing fins, gyroscopic, anti-rolling tanks, rudders and flaps have been conceived and utilized for the purpose. The Coanda effect is evident when a jet stream is applied tangential to a curved surface of a hydrofoil since then the jet increases the circulation around the foil and consequently the lift. Model tests and numerical simulation have been conducted to examine the practicality of a fixed type fin stabilizer augmented by the Coanda jet. The results show that the lift coefficient of the modified Coanda fin at the zero angle of attack identically coincides with that of the original fin at ${\alpha}=\26^{\circ}$ when Coanda jet is supplied at the rate of $C_j$ = 0.25. It is also shown that fixed type fin stabilizers for active control of the motions of ships and the other mobile units without rotation can be put to practical use if the Coanda effect is applied.

  • The oxy-fuel combustion heating characteristics is investigated experimentally by measuring furnace and steel temperature variations for batch type furnace simulator with a specially designed low NOx oxy-fuel burner. Economics of using oxy-fuel combustion is confirmed and, the furnace and steel temperature variations for different heating conditions are compared to deduce optimal heating control pattern for energy savings and rapid uniform heating. High $CO_2$ concentration (> 80-90%), low NOx (< 40ppm) and CO (< 10ppm) are measured in the flue gas. Temperature differences (< $30^{circ}C$) inside the furnace and steel are reduced relatively by increasing the burner jet momentum.

  • Stabilizer fins are installed on each side of a ship to control its roll motion. The most common stabilizer fin is a rolling control system that uses the lift force on the fin surface. If the angle of attack of a stabilizer fin is zero or the speed is zero, it cannot control the roll motion. The Coanda effect is well known to generate lift force in marine field. The performance of stabilizer fin that applies the Coanda effect has been verified by model tests and numerical simulations. It was found that a stabilizer fin that applied the Coanda effect at Cj = 0.085 and a zero angle of attack exactly coincided with that of the original fin at α = 26°. In addition, the power needed to generate the Coanda effect was not high compared to the motor power of the original stabilizer fin.

  • In this study, the heat transfer augmentation without additional blower power was obtained by using punched plate. Though this scheme has some disadvantages such as decrease of momentum caused by the punched plate, it has significantly increased heat transfer coefficients in the stagnation region. Compared with the case of no punched plate, heat transfer coefficients were increased by punched plate more than 2 times near the optimum condition determined in this study. Liquid crystal and hue-capturing technique were used in this study to obtain heat transfer coefficients.

  • Despite the massive effort which has been given to the analysis of the base flows, one commonly occurring case seems to be overlooked. This is for base (rearward facing surface) which is between a subsonic flow and supersonic flow. Potential flows of the air and gas streams are computed for the flow past a separated wake. Then a viscous jet mixing is superimposed on this inviscid solution. Conservation of mass, momentum and energy is achieved by multiple iterations. Despite the iterations, the wake flow field is computed with modest computer requirements.

  • Magnetic fields are thought to playa role in a wide variety of important astrophysical processes, from angular momentum transport and jet formation in accretion disks to corona formation in stars. Unfortunately, the dynamics of magnetic fields in astrophysical plasmas are extremely complicated, and the success of current theoretical models and computer simulations seems to be inversely correlated with the amount of observational detail available to us. Here I will discuss some of the more striking conflicts between numerical simulations and observations, and present an explanation for them based on an important dynamical process which is not adequately modeled in current numerical simulations. These processes will lead to the formation of flux tubes in stars and accretion disks, in accordance with observations. I will discuss some of the implications of flux tube formation for stellar and accretion disk dynamos.

  • The drop ejection process from a micro nozzle is investigated by numerically solving the conservation equations for mass and momentum. The liquid-gas interface is tracked by a level set method which is extended for two-fluid flows with irregular solid boundaries. Based on the numerical results, the liquid jet breaking and droplet formation behavior is found to depend strongly on the pulse type of forcing pressure and the contact angle at the gas-liquid-solid interline. The negative pressure forcing can be used to control the formation of satellite droplets. Also, various nozzle shapes are tested to investigate their effect on droplet formation.

  • The flow field in a cylinder of a 4-valve pentroof engine is studied using the KIVA-3V code. Turbulence is generated from the jet flow through valves and broken down to the small scale eddies in the compression process. It is known that the tumble effectively keeps turbulence during the compression process. In the combustion process, turbulence is known to enhance flame speed by increasing mass, momentum and heat transfer rates. The effects of the intake port angles on the flow and combustion characteristics are studied in this study. To study the effect of turbulence on the combustion process, Cantore combustion model is applied in this study.

  • An analytic approach to determine the optimal conditions for maximizing altitude of a sounding rocket is suggested. The behavior of the one-dimensional momentum equation including thrust, gravitational force and aerodynamic drag force is investigated. For the case where an analytic solution exists, a characteristic equation for determining optimal condition for maximizing altitude at the burn-out state and that for maximizing altitude at the stationary state are developed and verified with numerical experiments.
