Flow characteristics of synthetic jet based flow supplying devices have been computationally investigated for different device shapes. Jet momentum was produced by the volume change of a cavity by two piezoelectric-driven diaphragms. The devices have additional flow path compared with the original synthetic jet actuator, and these flow path changes the flow characteristics of synthetic jet actuator. Four non-dimensional parameters, which were functions of the shapes of the additional flow path, were considered as the most critical parameters in jet performance. Comparative studies were conducted to compare volume flow rate and jet velocity. Computed results were solved by 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes solver with k-w SST turbulence model. Detailed computations revealed that the additional flow path diminishes suction strength of the synthetic jet actuator. In addition, the cross section area of the flow path has more influence over the jet performances than the length of the flow path. Based on the computational results, the synthetic jet based flow supplying devices could be improved by applying suitable shape of the flow path.

Experimental investigations on the comparison of developments between transient jets and evolving jet diffusion flames have been made in initial injection period. To achieve this experiment, an ignition technique using a residual flame as the ignition source is devised. High speed Schlieren visualizations, and measurements including jet tip penetration velocities and jet widths of the primary vortex are employed to examine the developing processes for several flow conditions. It is seen that the developing behaviors in the presence of flame are greatly different from those in transient jet, and thus the flow characteristics in the transient part are also modified. The discernible differences are shown to consist of the delay of the rollup of the primary vortex, the faster spreading after the rollup due to exothermic expansion, and the survival of only a primary vortex. The growth of primary vortex in the transient jet is properly explained through an impulsively started laminar vortex prior to the interaction. It is also found that the jet tip penetration velocity varies with elapsed time and an increase in Res gives rise to a higher tip penetration velocity.

Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence characteristics are obtained with a linearized constant temperature hot-wire anemometer in a two-dimensional turbulent jet discharging parallel to a flate. Wall static pressure distribution is also measure. The Reynolds number based on the jet nozzle width (D) is about 42,000 and the step height is 2.5D. The reattachment length is found to be 7.5D by using both wool tuft and oil methods. Upstream of the reattachment point, there exist double coherent structures and mean velocity, Reynolds stresses and triple product profiles are asymmetric about jet center line due to the influence of streamline curvature and recirculating flow region. Near the reattachment point, wall static pressure and turbulence quantities change its shape rapidly because of the large eddies by the solid wall. Especially, turbulence intensity has a maximum value in the reattachment regin, then decreases slowly in the redeveloping wall jet ragion. Downstream of X/D=14, a single large scale eddy structure is formed. Far downstream affer the reattachment(X/D.geq.18) mean velocity profile, the decay of maximum velocity and the variation of jet half width are nearly similar to those of plane wall jet, but the Reynolds stresses are higher than those of the latter.
The flow structure and heat transfer characteristics of a turbulent buoyant jet were investigated experimentally. The instantaneous temperature and velocity fields in the near field were measured using a two-frame PIV and PLIF techniques. A thin light sheet illuminated a two-dimensional cross section of the buoyant jet in which Rhodamine B was added as a fluorescent dye. The intensity variations of LIF signal from Rhodamine B molecules scattered by the laser light were captured by a CCD camera after passing an optical filter. By ensemble averaging the instantaneous temperature and velocity fields, the mean temperature and velocity fields as well as the spatial distributions of turbulent statistics were obtained. The results show the flow structure and convective heat transfer of the developing shear layer in the near field.
Information on temporal evolution of whole velocity fields are essential for physical understanding of a complicated turbulent flow. Due to advances of high-speed imaging technique, laser and electronics, high-speed digital cameras and high-repetition pulse lasers are commercially available in nowadays. A dynamic PIV system that can measure consecutive instantaneous velocity field with 1K$\times$ 1K pixels resolution at 1 fps was developed. It consists of a high-speed CMOS camera and a high-repetition Nd:YLF pulse laser. Theoretically, it can capture velocity fields at 20 fps with a reduced spatial resolution. In order to validate its performance, the dynamic PIV system was applied to a turbulent jet of which Reynolds number is about 3000. The particle images of 1024$\times$512 pixels were captured at a sampling rate of 4 KHz. The dynamic PIV system measured successfully the temporal evolution of instantaneous velocity fields of the turbulent jet, from which spectral analysis of turbulent structure was also feasible.
This study focuses on the near-field vortical structure and dynamics of coaxial jets. The characteristics of laminar flow and mixing in coaxial jets are investigated using a unsteady flow simulation. In order to analyze the geometic effects on the vortical structure, several cases of different configurations are selected for various values of the velocity ratio of inner jet to outer jet. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by the development of vortical structure and the interaction between inner jet and outer jet. This feature is strongly related to the vortex frequency in the shear-layers. The vortex frequency depends on the velocity ratio and the lip thickness of inner nozzle, but the outer pipe length has no effect on the frequency variation.

The turbulent flow characteristics of impinging jet have been investigated by the hot wire anemometry with a movable impinging wall. Turbulences were generated by the meshed jet as well as the typical round jet and their characteristics were compared, of mean velocity profiles, turbulent intensities. Reynolds stresses, similarities and their centerline flow behaviors. The meshed jet tends to make shear layer wider than the normal one in the initial region and the velocity profiles of the normal jet is rather contractive being compared with those of the meshed one near the wall. The effect of meshed exit appears only within 4D at the begining of jets and the cascading process of the meshed one marches more rapidly than that of the normal jet. The wall effects appear in the downstream of about 0.85 H to the impinging wall for every case of wall positions in both nozzles.

This study investigated heat transfer and flow characteristics of a sweeping jet issued from a rectangular nozzle with a thin plate. A thin vertical aluminum plate was attached on outlet of fluidic oscillator to increase velocity of central area with Coanda effect and enhance heat transfer performance. From visualization and PIV experiments, sweeping jet with a thin plate has larger velocity distribution in center region than that of the normal sweeping jet while oscillating frequency is similar as the normal one. Thermographic phosphor thermometry method was used to visualize the temperature field and Nu distribution of plate with impinging sweeping jet with thin plate. Four Reynolds numbers and three jet-to-wall distances were selected as parameters. It is found that heat transfer performance in the low jet-to-wall spacing was enhanced as the cooled area was expanded. However, when the jet-to-wall spacing became greater than 8dh, heat transfer performance became similar due to reduced impinging velocity.

The breakup length of a liquid jet with flowrate, formed by releasing through a nozzle of circular cross-section into the atmosphere, was experimented and studied for 3 liquid nozzles of varying diameters. The experimental result was analyzed using the existing theoretical equation for predicting the breakup length. It was found that the breakup length of liquid jet depends on the velocity, and the breakup length increases with increasing of the liquid nozzle diameter. Also, the variation range of the breakup length for the same flowrate of liquid increased rapidly as velocity was increased for laminar flow, but in the turbulent flow region, it leveled off in the range of approximately 0.55-0.7 of the mean breakup length. Furthermore, when the longest smooth liquid jet was applied to the co-axial flow air blast atomizer, the effect of air flow on the flow pattern and breakup length was studied for 6 glass nozzles of different lengths and diameters. It was found that depending on the diameter of the mixing tube and liquid jet, it was possible to observe a wide range of flow patterns, such as liquid jet through flow, partial annular flow and annular flow. The liquid jet breakup length was more sensitive to the change in the length rather than the diameter of the mixing tube. As the length of the mixing tube shortens, the breakup length also shortens rapidly.
Separation control has been performed using synthetic jets on airfoil at high angle of attack. Computed results demonstrated that stall characteristics and control surface performance could be substantially improved by resizing separation vortices. It was observed that the actual flow control mechanism and flow structure is fundamentally different depending on the range of synthetic jet frequency. For low frequency range, small vortices due to synthetic jet penetrated to the large leading edge separation vortex, and as a result, the size of the leading edge vortex was remarkably reduced. For high frequency range, however, small vortex did not grow up enough to penetrate into the leading edge separation vortex. Instead, synthetic jet firmly attached the local flow and influenced the circulation of the virtual airfoil shape which is the combined shape of the main airfoil with the separation vortex. Theses results show the characteristic of unsteady flow of single synthetic jet. Beside, we researched on multi-array synthetic jet to obtain applicable synthetic jet velocity. Multi-location synthetic jet is proposed to eliminate small vortex on suction surface of airfoil. With the results, we concluded that the flow around airfoil is stable by high frequency synthetic jet with elimination of small vortex and confirmation of stable flow. Moreover, performance of multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet can be improved by changing phase angle of multi-location synthetic jet.
