  • In this study, breakwater model which has several outlet pipes to discharge heated water is settled in the experimental open channel and velocity distribution of wall jet is measured. Numerical simulation of velocity structure of wall jet using 3-dimensional computer model. Fluent model, is also carried out. The calculated results are verified with the experimental results and the flow characteristics of wall jet are investigated. The length of zone of flow establishment of wall jet is shorter than that of free jet, and the diminution rate of jet centerline longitudinal velocity is larger than that of free jet. Characteristics of buoyant jet and non-buoyant simple jet simulated by Fluent model are compared. Near the outlet pipe, in the region where x/lQ is over 15, this is reversed. Comparison of vertical distribution of longitudinal velocity shows that positive velocity of non-buoyant jet is bigger than that of buoyant jet in the bottom layer and in the upper layer, negative velocity of non-buoyant jet is bigger too. Flow separation in free surface of the buoyant jet occurs in smaller distances from the outlet than the non-buoyant jet. Buoyant jet expands faster than the non-buoyant jet in vertical direction.

  • Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of convergent nozzle. The objective of the present study is to understand the flow characteristics of the spiral jet, using a computational method. A finite volume scheme is used to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The computational results are validated by the previous experimental data. It is found that the spiral jet is generated by coanda effect at the inlet of the convergent nozzle and its fundamental features are dependent the pressure ratio of the radial flow through the annular slit and the coanda wall curvature.

In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of a conical convergent nozzle. The present study describes a computational work to investigate the effects of annular slit on the spiral jet. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained obviously show that the annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as tangential and axial velocities.

  • A present study is the flow characteristics of impinging jet by PIV measurement and numerical analysis. The flow characteristics of impinging jet flow are affected greatly by nozzle inlet velocity. An circular sharp edged nozzle type$(45^{\circ})$ was used to achieve uniform mean velocity at the nozzle inlet, and its diameter is 10mm(d). Therefore, the flow characteristics on the impinging jet can be changed largely by the control of main flow. In this parent study, we investigate the effects of inlet velocity, its variable is nozzle inlet Reynolds numbers(Re=1500, 3000, 4500, 6000 and 7500).

  • Three dimensional velocity measurements of a 35.deg. inclined jet issuing into turbulent boundary layer on both concave and convex surfaces have been conducted. To investigate solely the effect of each curvature on the flow field, streamwise pressure variations are minimized by adjusting the shape of the opposite wall in the curved region. From the measured velocity components, streamwise mean vorticities are calculated to determine jet-crossflow interface. The results on convex surface show that the injected jet is separated from the wall and the bound vortex maintains its structure far downstream. On concave surface, the secondary flow in the jet cross-sections are enhanced and in some downstream region from the jet exit, the flow on the concave surface has been developed to Taylor-Gortler vortices

  • In the fully developed internal flow fields, there are complex transition flows caused by interaction of the cross flow and jet when jet is Injected Into the flow. These interactions are studied by means of the flow visualization methods. An instantaneous laser tomographic method is used to reveal the physical mechanism and the structure of vortices formation in the branch pipe flow. The velocity range of cross flow of the pipe is 0.7m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number $R_{cf}$, based on the duct height is $5.6{\times}10^3$, diameter/height ratios(d/H) 0.14 and velocity ratios 3.0. Oil mist with the size of $10{\mu}m$ diameter is used for the scattering particle. The instantaneous topological features of the vortex ring roll-up of the jet shear layer and characteristics of this flow are studied in detail by performing flow visualization in rectangular duct flow. It is found that the formation and roll-up of ring vortices is a periodic phenomenon. The detailed topology of the vortices in the near field of a cross -flow jet and the mechanism associated with them give enforced hints of vortex breakdown within the vortex system due to the interaction of the jet and the cross-flow.

  • Micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) has been widely used to measure the velocity of micro flow. Although this micro-PIV method can give accurate 2D instantaneous velocity information of mea-surement plane, it cannot resolve the out of plane component of velocity vectors. Lots of the micro fluidic devices generate three-dimensional flow and 3D measurement of velocity is useful to understand the physics of micro flow phenomena. In this study, we constructed stereoscopic micro-PIV(SMPIV) system and applied this method to the impinging micro jet flow. The results show that this method can produce accu-rate 3D reconstruction of micro jet flow.

  • In this study, the confined laminar flow and transport around a square cylinder with a planar fuel jet are numerically simulated. Both rear and front jets are considered, respectively. In each case, various ratios of the jet velocity to the fixed upstream velocity are taken into consideration. In case of the rear jet, the high mass-fraction region is formed along the streamlines from the jet exit, and the oscillation of the force on the square cylinder eventually disappears as the jet velocity is close to the upstream velocity. In case of the front jet, drag is significantly reduced when the jet velocity ratio is grater than 1. The results obtained exhibit flow and scalar-mixing charactered in a planar combustor.
