  • This study investigated the reproductive ecology and spawning of Hoplobrotula armata on the coast of Jejudo Island. Samples were collected from February to December 2019 and February to December 2020, with a total of 2,634 samples. The results of the investigation showed that total length (TL) ranged from 22.0 cm to 68.8 cm, and the body weight (BW) ranged from 66.5 g to 3,553.9 g. According to the development process of gonads and the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the spawning period of H. armata was from July to October. The relationship between TL and BW was BW = 0.0024TL3.3278 in females and BW = 0.0035TL3.2162 in males. The sex ratios of surveyed female to male H. armata was 1:0.71, with more females. At 50%, 75%, and 97.5%, the group maturities of H. armata were as follows: Females, 39.9 cm, 42.7 cm, and 49.4 cm; males, 37.6 cm, 40.4 cm, and 46.9 cm, respectively. According to monthly GSI and gametocyte (ovarian, testis) development stage observations of H. armata on the coast of Jejudo Island, they spawn once a year and are presumed to be summer spawners.

  • Some hydroid specimens were collected by SCUBA diving from 10-25 m deep at Uljin (Nagok) and Jejudo Island (Munseom, Beomseom, Supseom). Among the identified species, three species Eudendrium racemosum (Gmelin, 1791), Sertularella diaphana(Allman, 1886) and Schizotricha divergens Naumov, 1960 are new to the Korean fauna.

  • This study aims to propose the future plan and research management of a beach and the relation between spatial structure of a village and layout of the beach focusing on Gimnyeong beach among the 12 general beaches in Jejudo. The results are as followings: First, Gimnyeong beach had the relation to primary industries of residents in the village in times past and was the space for everyday lives of residents. However, at present it has the relation to tertiary industries and is more important in community activities. Second, the entry part and the sandy beach of Gimnyeong beach were crucial in location and function in times past but total size of the beach has expanded for campground nowadays. Therefore, it is necessary to change the location of entry part to center part of the beach. In addition, convenient and safe facilities are need to be built more to corresponding to expanding area of the beach. Finally, in order to maintain clean sea, residents in the Gimnyeong have agreed to not make sea farms in the vicinity of Gimnyeong Beach which pollute the sea. Their roles have influenced on positive effect to community of the village, management of the beach, and maintenance of clean sea.

  • Increasing of the number of Roe Deer in Jesudo is regarded as an direct cause of the damages of Roe Deer - i.e. damages of crops and trees by Roe Deer and traffic accidents between human and Roe Deer. But, no study of the number of Roe Deer in Jejudo has been found and never has been progressed it and nobody convinces about the total number of Roe Deer in Jejudo. In this paper, we focus at the moving pressure which enforces Roe Deer to move the other places. Moving pressure is appeared when the habitat environment destruction of Roe Deer and it forces Roe Deer in hilly section to move the middle mountains section and the low section. This moving pressure promotes the moving of Roe Deer to the other places and then the total number of Roe Deer in new places are increasing. High density of Roe Deer makes the habitat environment bad and increases the competition of Roe Deer. These patterns are repeated continuously. The habitat environment of Roe Deer is related with human life area very closely. We should keep and preserve our nature and environment, and if we develop our nature then we must consider our ecosystem in all aspects. It's the most important thing to us and Roe Deer and other living things.

  • A single specimen of Caranx melampygus (113 mm standard length), belonging to the family Carangidae, was firstly collected by a set net from the coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea. This species is morphologically similar to C. sexfasciatus except for the posterior end of maxilla not reaching the posterior margin of eye (vs. reaching in C. sexfasciatus) and no black blotch on the upper part of opercle (vs. black blotch). We newly add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean name "Jag-eun-ip-jul-jeon-gaeng-i" for the species because it has relatively smaller upper jaw when compared with C. sexfasciatus.

  • A new species, Daphne jejudoensis M. Kim, has been named and described from Seonheul, Jejudo Province, Korea. Daphne jejudoensis shares several characteristics (white calyx colors, long calyx tube, evergreen leaves, leathery leaf textures, etc.) with its related species D. kiusiana, but it is distinct from D. kiusiana which has a hairy calyx tube and lobes, short calyx lobes, oblanceolate leaves (with acute apex), and a different distribution (coastal region in Geojedo Is.) by having a glabrous calyx tube and lobes, long calyx lobes, elliptic leaves (with acuminate apex), and by its distribution (inland region in Jejudo Is.).

  • This is the first report of Chaetodontoplus melanosoma, belonging to the family Pomacanthidae, collected in Korea. The specimen (123.1 mm in standard length) was caught in the coastal waters of Jejudo Island by a trammel net on 23 February 2010. This species was characterized by the following morphological traits: 26 dorsal fin rays, 16 pectoral fin rays, 6 pelvic fin, 21 anal fin rays, no blue strips on the body, no markings behind the eye, and an egg-shaped faint black spot on the base of the pectoral fin. We suggest a new Korean name "Geom-eun-cheong-jul-dom" for C. melanosoma.

  • A coastal dune field, located at Kimnyong-Wolchung beach in Jejudo, Korea, extends alongshore for about 4 km, with dunes extending inland about 6 km. Detailed geomorphological analysis of the area was carried out by using areal photography and Landsat images. Samples were collected across two transects, and physical and chemical properties are analyzed to detect the variation of both properties depending on distance form the beach. Paleosol layers found during the field trip suggest that dune emplacement is episodic. Radiocarbon dates from nearby Hyupjae beach indicate that dunes have been formed during the late Holocene by the disturbance of calcareous materials.

  • Analysis on turbulence intensity profile depending on wind speed is an important process to set up design condition of wind turbine in terms of fatigue load. This paper tests goodness of fit of turbulence intensity empirical equations suggested by the IEC 61400 Standards with Jejudo Gimnyeong met-tower measurement, which is erected at a seashore. Therefore sea breeze and land breeze coexist. Sea breeze case showed apparent increasing trend of turbulence intensity in a high wind speed regime due to increase of sea surface roughness. However, neither inland wind turbine standard IEC 61400-1 nor offshore wind turbine standard IEC 61400-3 fit such a trend adequately. On the other hand, the modified empirical equation of turbulence intensity of IEC 61400-3 derived from Germany FINO1 application study by considering turbulence intensity behavior in a high wind speed regime showed good agreement with the measurement. Therefore, we can reconfirm and conclude that IEC 61400-3 Ed.1 legislated in 2009 needs to be modified.
