New Record of the Spinecheek Gudgeon, Eleotris acanthopoma (Perciformes: Eleotridae) from Jeju Island, Korea (제주도 남부 연안역에서 채집된 농어목 구굴무치과 한국미기록종, Eleotris acanthopoma)

  • Based on four specimens (50.9~69.0 mm SL) collected from a small stream of southern coast of Jeju Island, Eleotris acanthopoma was described as the second Eleotris species as well as the first record from Korea. They were characterized by having two dorsal fins, well-separated pelvic fins, separation of two rows of sensory papillae on opercle and extending the fourth row of sensory papillae beyond the 13th longitudinal sensory-papillae row on cheek. We proposed a new Korean name, "Geom-eun-gu-gul-mu-chi", for the species.

Hearing Ability of Bambooleaf wrasse Pseudolabrus japonicus caught in the coast of Jeju (제주 연안에서 어획된 황놀래기의 청각 능력)

  • In order to improve the availability of underwater sound by the fundamental data on the hearing ability, the auditory thresholds for the bambooleaf wrasse pseudolabrus japonicus were determined at 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 300Hz, 500Hz and 800Hz by heartbeat conditioning method using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock. The audible range of the bambooleaf wrasse extended from 80Hz to 800Hz with the best sensitivity around 100Hz and 200Hz. In addition, the auditory thresholds over 300Hz increased rapidly. The mean auditory thresholds of the bambooleaf wrasse at the test frequencies, 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 300Hz, 500Hz and 800Hz were 100dB, 95.1dB, 94.8dB, 109dB, 121dB and 125dB, respectively. Auditory critical ratios for the bambooleaf wrasse were measured using masking stimuli with the spectrum level range of about 70, 74, 78dB (0dB re $1{\mu}Pa/\sqrt{Hz}$). According to white noise level, the auditory thresholds increased as compared with thresholds in a quiet background noise. The Auditory masking by the white noise spectrum level was stared over about 60dB within 80~300Hz. Critical ratios to be measured at frequencies from 80Hz to 300Hz were minimum 33dB and maximum 39dB.

Modeling Artificial Groundwater Recharge in the Hancheon Drainage Area, Jeju island, Korea (제주도 한천유역 지하수 모델개발을 통한 인공함양 평가)

  • For the Hancheon drainage area in Jeju island, a groundwater flow model using Visual MODFLOW was developed to simulate artificial recharge through injection wells installed in the Hancheon reservoir. The model was used to analyze changes of the groundwater level and the water budget due to the artificial recharge. The model assumed that $2{\times}10^6m^3$ of storm water would recharge annually through the injection wells during the rainy season. The transient simulation results showed that the water level rose by 39.6 m at the nearest monitoring well and by 0.26 m at the well located 7 km downstream from the injection wells demonstrating a large extent of the affected area by the artificial recharge. It also shown that, at the time when the recharge ended in the 5th year, the water level increased by 81 m at the artificial reservoir and the radius of influence was about 2.1 km downstream toward the coast. The residence time of recharged groundwater was estimated to be no less than 5 years. The model also illustrated that 15 years of artificial recharge could increase the average linear velocity of groundwater up to 1540 m/yr, which showed 100 m/yr higher than before. Increase of groundwater storage due to artificial recharge was calculated to be $2.4{\times}10^6$ and $4.3{\times}10^6m^3$ at the end of the 5th and 10th years of artificial recharge, respectively. The rate of storage increase was gradually diminished afterwards, and storage increase of $5.0{\times}10^6m^3$ was retained after 15 years of artificial recharge. Conclusively, the artificial recharge system could augment $5.0{\times}10^6m^3$ of additional groundwater resources in the Hancheon area.

  • 기후변화는 기상재해뿐만 아니라 지속적인 해수면 상승의 원인이 되고 있으며, 자연 생태계화 인간의 사회, 경제시스템 전반에 걸쳐 영향을 미치고 있으며, 건설분야도 이와 무관하지 않다. 특히 기후변화는 해수면 상승으로 이어져 사회기반시설인 항구, 연안도로, 철도, 빌딩 등과 연안산업인 석유 및 석유화학공장, 그리고 서비스업인 관광에 대한 위협으로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 해수면 상승은 토지 및 건물의 재산 가치 하락과 해수면 상승에 따른 보호비용 증대, 구조물의 급속한 노후화에 따른 유지관리비용의 증가뿐만 아니라 정치적 제도적 불안 및 사회동요 등을 유발할 수 있다. 우리나라의 경우, 지난 100년간 6대 도시 평균기온이 약 $1.5^{\circ}C$ 상승하였으며, 해수면(제주기준)은 40년간 22cm가 상승하였다. 특히 제주의 경우 매년 5mm씩의 해수면 상승을 보이고 있으며 이는 전 지구 해수면 상승률보다 3배 높은 수치이다. 본 연구는 해수면의 상승에 따른 건설분야의 영향을 분석하기 위한 선도적인 연구로서, 연구의 범위를 제주지역에 국한하였으며, 해수면 상승에 따른 영향 지역을 추출하고, 영향 지역 내 건설시설물 정보를 추출하기 위한 절차를 규명하였다. 본 연구 결과는 유지보수 및 시설물 이설에 따른 공사비 산출의 근거가 될 뿐만 아니라 관련 예산 확보에 대한 근거 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 향후 관련 지역의 유지보수 및 이설 공사비 정보의 추출 및 DB 구축을 통해 연안 건설 시설물의 이설에 따른 공사비를 예측할 수 있을 것이다.

Morphological Characteristics of the Blue Trevally, Carangoides ferdau (Perciformes: Carangidae) and its Phylogenetic Relationships among Korean Relatives (흑전갱이, Carangoides ferdau의 형태적 특징 및 분자계통분류학적 위치)

  • As Carangoides ferdau was previously reported based on its underwater photograph, morphological descriptions have been incomplete up to the presence in Korea. On the base of two samples collected at the coast of Jeju island, morphological characters of C. ferdau are described in detail. This species is characterized by having the forepart of second dorsal fin much prolonged, 7~8 transverse dark bands on body, and snout length almost equal to eye diameter. It is morphologically very similar to C. orthogroammus, but is easily distinguished in having transverse dark bands instead of yellow spot on the body of C. orthogroammus. Phylogenetic relationships based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b (1,141 base pairs) sequences shows that C. ferdau is closely related to C. orthogroammus, and C. dinema also has a sister group relationship with C. ablongus. Both genetic distances (p-distances) are 8.2%, respectively.

Classification and Characteristic Comparison of Groundwater Level Variation in Jeju Island Using Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis (주성분분석 및 군집분석을 이용한 제주도 지하수위 변동 유형 분류 및 특성 비교)

  • Water resources in Jeju Island are dependent virtually entirely on groundwater. For groundwater resources, drought damage can cause environmental and economic losses because it progresses slowly and occurs for a long time in a large area. Therefore, this study quantitatively evaluated groundwater level fluctuations using principal component and cluster analyses for 42 monitoring wells in Jeju Island, and further identified the types of groundwater fluctuations caused by drought. As a result of principal component analysis for the monthly average groundwater level during 2005-2019 and the daily average groundwater level during the dry season, it was found that the first three principal components account for most of the variance 74.5-93.5% of the total data. In the cluster analysis using these three principal components, most of wells belong to Cluster 1, and seasonal characteristics have a significant impact on groundwater fluctuations. However, wells belonging to Cluster 2 with high factor loadings of components 2 and 3 affected by groundwater pumping, tide levels, and nearby surface water are mainly distributed on the west coast. Based on these results, it is expected that groundwater in the western area will be more vulnerable to saltwater intrusion and groundwater depletion caused by drought.

Histopathologic Observation of the Mediterranean Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819) During a Spawning Season (산란기 지중해담치 Mytilus galloprovincialis의 조직병리학적 변화 관찰)

  • Sessile marine bivalves including mussels, oysters and clams are often used as a sentinel species in coastal environmental monitoring since changes in the environmental quality are often well preserved in their tissues and shells. In this study, we investigated overall health condition of the Mediterranean Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis on the south coast using histology. Reproductive condition as gonad index (GI), condition index (CI) as a ratio of the tissue weight to the shell weight, digestive gland atrophy (DGA), types of parasites, and pathologic conditions including erosion, necrosis, hemocyte infiltration, and neoplasia were examined from each histological preparation. GI decreased from March to July then increased from July to September and spawning mussel could be observed as early as in April and the activity continued until September. CI also followed the monthly changes in GI, indicating that decrease in CI was associated with the weight loss due to spawning. DGA increased from March to June, decreased in July and increased from July to September. High DGA values observed in June and September were coincided with spawning and high water temperature. Histology also showed high prevalence of erosion in the digestive gland in June (36.0%) and September (56.4%), suggesting that high water temperature and spawning acted as environmental stressors. No parasitic organism was identified during the survey, although some symbiotic copepods were observed. Histology was found to be useful and affordable technique in monitoring the overall health of mussel, providing useful pathologic information of the cells and tissues.

Phylogenetic Diversity and Community Structure of Microbiome Isolated from Sargassum Horneri off the Jeju Island Coast (제주 연안의 괭생이모자반(Sargassum horneri)에서 분리된 세균의 계통학적 다양성 및 군집 구조 분석)

  • Recently, Sargassum horneri, the marine weed inhabiting the shoreline, beach, and littoral sea area, has caused serious damage to intensive aquaculture farms particularly those around Jeju Island, South Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the diversity of microorganisms in Sargassum horneri and to provide basic data on ecological problems by identifying microbial functions. A total of 88 isolates were identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum accounting for 88%, including class ${\alpha}-proteobacteria$, six genera, and ten species. The dominating genus, Pseudobacter, accounted for 40% in Pseudorhodobacter, 20% in Paracoccus, and the remaining at 10% each were Rhizobium, Albirhodobacter, Skermanella, and Novosphingobium. Class ${\beta}-proteobactera$ included five genera and ten species. Genus Hydrogenophaga accounted for 50%, while genus Azoarcus accounted for 20%, and the remaining Oxalicibacterium, Duganella, and Xenophilus were 10% each. Class ${\gamma}-proteobacteria$ with 13 genera and 57 species, accounted for 74% in phylum Proteobacteria, 23% in Shewanella, 19% in Cobetia, 12% in Pseudomonas, 4% each in Vibrio and Serratia, and 2% each in Rheinheimera, Raoultella, Pantoea, Acinetobacter, Moraxella, and Psychrobacter genera. In addition, Actinobacteria with two species of Nocardioides genera accounted for 50%, and Bacteroidetes accounted for 33%, with three genera and five species that included Lacihabitans and Mariniflexile. The remaining Dyadobacter, Cellulophaga, and Ferruginibacter genera each accounted for 11%.

  • Morphology, histology, and histochemical characteristics of the digestive tract of the guirine goby (Rhinogobius giurinus: Gobiidae), collected from the coast of Jeju Island, Korea, were investigated. The digestive tract of R. giurinus, which is a brackish water species, has a short (relative length of gut=0.42), simple, and narrow gut. The gastric glands are well developed in the stomach, but pyloric caeca are absent. The mucosal folds are regularly branched, and the muscularis extern a is thickest in the esophagus, which also contained the most mucus-secreting goblet cells (P<0.05). In R. giurinus, digestive function occurs in the anterior portion of the digestive tract, where mucus protects the tract from the actions of digestive enzymes and functions to activate digestion.

Dendrodasys duplus, a New Gastrotrich Species (Macrodasyida: Dactylopodolidae) from South Korea

  • A new gastrotrich species of the genus Dendrodasys (Dactylopodolidae) is described on the basis of specimens collected from sublittoral fine sandy bottoms at Uljin, East Sea and at Gujwa, the northeastern coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. Dendrodasys duplus is characterized by a triangular head with lateral lobes extending outward, two pairs of pestle organs posterior to the lateral cephalic lobes, a pair of anterior adhesive tubes, the absence of dorsal, lateral and ventral adhesive tubes, large posterior adhesive tubes arising from the anterior third of the caudal peduncle, and paired testes of different lengths. The genus Dendrodasys is recorded for the first time in East Asia.
