Use of natural ingredients in Japanese quail diet and their effect on carcass and meat quality - A review

  • The present paper reviews the findings of different research studies on the effect of natural ingredients in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) diet on carcass characteristics and meat quality. The results show a relationship between the type and concentration of ingredients used in diets and carcass characteristics and meat quality. The inclusion of medicinal herbs (thyme, black seed, and mint), plants (canola), seeds (chickpea), spices (cinnamon and coriander), worms (earthworms), bee products (propolis), phytochemicals (lycopene), and edible fungi (common mushrooms) in the diet improved carcass quality characteristics compared to the control diets (basal diets). The inclusion of medicinal herbs (spearmint and green tea), spices (cinnamon), vegetables (tomato), plants (verbena and canola), seeds (marijuana), and edible fungi (oyster mushrooms) improved meat quality. In conclusion, the use of ingredients of natural origin in the diet of Japanese quail improves carcass quality characteristics and meat quality.

  • The mesh selectivity of gill net for Japanese sandfish (Arctoscopus japonicus) caught in the East Sea, Korea was described. The experiment was conducted with five different kinds of mesh size (39.4, 45.5, 51.5, 53.0, 57.6mm) between November and December 2006 in spawning season. The catch was mostly Japanese sandfish (93.3%) and some others (6.7%), and almost all of the female Japanese sandfish were larger than the fork length at 50% maturity (16.7cm). The selection curve for the female Japanese sandfish caught from the experiments was fitted by the Kitahara's method to a polynomial equation which was $s(R)={\exp}\{(0.2584R^3-5.3445R^2+32.269R-59.868)-0.6585\}$ where R=l/m, and l and m are fork length and mesh size, respectively.

Development of Ply-Lam Composed of Japanese Cypress Laminae and Korean Larch Plywood

  • In recent years, the use of cross laminated timber (CLT) has been evolving. In addition, CLT manufactured with various species such as Japanese cedar has been developed to utilize the local resources in each country. However most factories in Japan produce CLT by bonding the laminae in width direction for orthogonal layers, where grain of element is perpendicular to the grain of outer layer, and this process is considered to be one of the factors that reduce productivity. A new wood based material (hereinafter referred to as Ply-lam) using wooden panel such as plywood for the orthogonal layer was developed in order to improve productivity in CLT manufacturing and improve quality. Japanese cypress lamina was used for the parallel layer, where grain of element is parallel to the grain of outer layer, of CLT and Korean larch plywood was used for the orthogonal layer, in order to effectively use Korean larch and expand the utilization of Japanese cypress. The cross-sectional construction of the Ply-lam was 5-layers 5-plies, and the dimensions were 1000 mm (width) × 150 mm (depth) × 4000 mm (length). As a performance evaluation of the manufactured Ply-lam, strength tests such as out-of-plane bending, in-plane bending, out-of-plane shearing and in-plane shearing tests were carried out. As the result of this study, Ply-lam composed of Japanese cypress lamina panels and Korean larch plywood showed very higher out-of-plane bending strength compared to the standard strength of CLT. And the result obtained in other tests seems to show a sufficiently high value.

일본 현대 산업직물에 나타난 신기술과 전통공예의 접목 경향 (A Trend of Combining New Technology and Traditional Craft in Modem Japanese Industrial Textiles)

  • 일본은 전통적으로 수공예를 대단히 존중하여 뛰어난 공예기술은 대를 이어 전수되어 오고 있다. 현대 일본의 산업직물은 이러한 전통기술을 현대 과학기술과 접목하여 현대적으로 재해석하고 재조합하여 미래와 전통의 양면가치를 표현하고 있다. 이러한 신기술과 수공예의 접목은 신기술 개발이나 디자인에 있어 다양성과 독창성을 타나내고 있어 현대 산업직물의 중요한 경향으로 부각되고 있다. 본 연구는 이 경향을 주도함으로서 현대 직물산업계에서 독자적 발전을 이룩한 일본 직물산업의 발전배경을 알아보고 이 새로운 경향이 제시한 현대 직물 개념과 조형적 혁신에 대해 고찰하여 현재와 미래의 창의적 직물 개발에 기여하고자 하였다. 본 연구 결과는 다음과 같이 된다. 신기술과 수공예의 접목 경향은 1) 일본인의 전통문화 존중 의식과 선진 섬유산업에 대한 빠른 인식이 결합되어 출현하게 된 것으로, 전통 수공예는 새로운 의미와 가치를 갖게 되어 결국 직물의 사회적 역할을 확대하였다. 2) 현대 산업직물에 요구되는 고품질, 고기능, 고감도를 위해 직물의 첨단화, 예술화, 감성화를 추구함으로서 직물의 현대적 개념을 구축하였다. 3) 산업직물에 조형적 혁신을 이루어 표현의 다양화, 재료의 다양성, 재질감의 강조로 새로운 디자인 발상과 새로운 스타일의 창조를 가능하게 하였다. 이와 같이 일본은 전통과 신기술의 접목을 시도하여 세계인이 공감할 수 있는 독자적이고 수준 높은 미를 제시함으로서 미래 직물에 대한 가장 중요한 지침을 제시하고 있다.

Feasibility of Non-Korean Standard Glulam Using a Lower Grade Lamina of Japanese cedar for Structural Use

  • Japanese cedar has low density and poor mechanical performance. Manufacturing glue-laminated timber (glulam) is the best way to compensate for its poor mechanical performance. The Korean Standard (KS) confines outermost lamina of glulam to higher grade than E8, but the yield of higher than grade E8 from logs is only 6.5%. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of non-Korean-Standard glulam in structural applications. Allowable stresses determined by both hand-calculation and Monte-Carlo simulation show a higher allowable stress than that of the KS-standard glulam of 6S-22B. In the Korean Standard (KS), knot characteristics are not taken into account. Japanese cedar has relatively small knots. We believe that the small knots in Japanese cedar contribute to a higher allowable stress than the KS-standard glulam would predict. The species classification of KS is required to be further subdivided into sub-species groups based on knot characteristics.

Influence of Global versus Local Rating Agencies to Japanese Financial Firms

  • Global rating agencies, such as Moody's and S&P, have assigned credit ratings to corporate bonds issued by Japanese firms since 1980s. Local Japanese rating agencies, such as R&I and JCR, have more market share than the global raters. We examine the yield spreads of 1,050 yen-denominated corporate bonds issued by financial firms in Japan from 1998 to 2014 and find no evidence that bonds rated by at least one global agency are associated with a significant reduction in the cost of debt as compared to those rated by only local rating agencies. Unlike non-financial firms, the reputation effect of global rating agencies does not exist for Japanese financial firms. We also observe that firms with less information asymmetry are more likely to acquire ratings from Moody's or S&P. Additionally, the firm's financial profile does not affect its choice to seek out ratings from global raters. Our findings are contradictory to those by Han, Pagano, and Shin (2012), who employ bonds issued by non-financial firms in Japan. Our conjecture is that the asymmetric nature of financial firms makes investors less likely to depend on a credit risk assessment by rating agencies in determining the yields of new bonds.

Capital Structure Decisions Following Credit Rating Changes: Evidence from Japan

  • Our study adds to the body of knowledge about the relationship between credit ratings and the capital structure of bond issuers. Using Bloomberg and Datastream databases and employing panel regression models, we study the capital structure changes of Japanese enterprises after credit rating changes by global rating agencies (S&P and Moody's) as well as their local counterparts (R&I and JCR) from 1998 to 2016. We find that after rating downgrades, Japanese enterprises considerably reduce net debt or net debt relative to net equity, similar to the findings of Kisgen (2009), who focused on U.S. industrial firms. They do not, however, make adjustments to their financial structure as a result of rating improvements. In comparison to downgrades by S&P and Moody's, Japanese corporations issue 1.89 percent less net debt and 1.50 percent less net debt relative to net equity after R&I and JCR rating downgrades. To put it another way, Japanese companies consider rating adjustments made by local agencies to be more significant than those made by global rating organizations. Our findings contradict earlier research that suggests S&P and Moody's are more prominent in the investment community than R&I and JCR in Japan.

SOME PROSODIC FEATURES OBSERVED IN THE PASSAGE READING BY JAPANESE LEARNERS OF ENGLISH

  • This study aims to see some prosodic features of English spoken by Japanese learners of English. It focuses on speech rates, pauses, and intonation when the learners read an English passage. Three Japanese learners of English, who are all male university students, were asked to read the speech material, an English passage of 110 word length, at their normal reading speed. Then a native speaker of English, a male American English teacher. was asked to read the same passage. The Japanese speakers were also asked to read a Japanese passage of 286 letters (Japanese Kana) to compare the reading of English with that of japanese. Their speech was analyzed on a computerized system (KAY Computerized Speech Lab). Wave forms, spectrograms, and F0 contours were shown on the screen to measure the duration of pauses, phrases and sentences and to observe intonation contours. One finding of the experiment was that the movement of the low speakers' speech rates showed a similar tendency in their reading of the English passage. Reading of the Japanese passage by the three learners also had a similar tendency in the movement of speech rates. Another finding was that the frequency of pauses in the learners speech was greater than that in the speech of the native speaker, but that the ration of the total pause length to the whole utterance length was about tile same in both the learners' and the native speaker's speech. A similar tendency was observed about the learners' reading of the Japanese passage except that they used shorter pauses in the mid-sentence position. As to intonation contours, we found that the learners used a narrower pitch range than the native speaker in their reading of the English passage while they used a wider pitch range as they read the Japanese passage. It was found that the learners tended to use falling intonation before pauses whereas the native speaker used different intonation patterns. These findings are applicable to the teaching of English pronunciation at the passage level in the sense that they can show the learners. Japanese here, what their problems are and how they could be solved.

인접 단어들의 접속정보를 이용한 일한 활용어 번역 (Japanese-to-Korean Inflected Word Translation Using Connection Relations of Two Neighboring Words)

  • 일본어와 한국어는 문법적으로 많은 유사점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 유사점을 잘 이용한다면 일한 기계번역 시스템에서 구문해석이나 의미해석의 상당한 부분을 생략할 수 있다. 몇 년 전부터 우리는 유사성을 이용하여 번역율을 높이는 방법으로 번역테이블을 이용한 일한기계번역 시스템을 연구해왔다. 그러나 이 시스템은 활용어미의 번역, 다의성 단어의 처리 등 및 가지 문제점을 가지고 있었다. 본 논문에서는 번역데이블을 이용하는 시스템을 개선하여 이웃하는 단어들과의 관계 정보를 이용한 일한 기계번역 시스템을 제안한다. 현재 시스템의 문제점들을 해결하기 위하여 우선 조사, 조동사의 접속정보를 최대한 이용한다. 또한, 번역 테이블을 엔트리테이블과 접속정보 테이블로 나누어 설계하여 번역의 효율을 높인다. 즉, 하나의 역어만 가지는 단어인 경우, 우리는 일한 직접 대응 방법을 이용하여 바로 번역하고 2개 이상의 역어로 번역되어야 할 경우만 접속 정보 값을 평가하여 가장 가능성이 높은 번역어를 선택하도록 한다.
