  • This study aims to examine Japanese elementary school architecture in Meiji Era, in which Japanese modern education system was settled down and the school architecture flourished by mass construction of stereotyped school buildings. It is assumed that stereotyped school architecture is due to the influence of the standard drawings made by Japanese Ministry of Education, therefore standard drawings could be a key to understand the characteristics of the stereotyped school buildings in Meiji Era. In this perspective this study attempts to analyze 4 standard drawings and interpret it in relation to regulations and design guidelines for school architecture in that time. As results of this study the change and characteristics of stereotyped school architecture in Meiji Era are clarified in several categories. They are as follows : the deviation of classroom and corridor, the change of classroom size fixing to 4 kan(間) by 5 kan(間), the absolute use of north-lacing single corridor type block-plan, and the change of other space such as waiting room(控所), special instruction room, auditorium and gymnasium.

  • This Study is concerned with the color design of Korean and Japanese wooden architecture. The main subject of the study is to investigate the commonness and difference of color decoration between Korean and Japanese Buddhist 'Danchung' in the modern ages. In carrying this study into execution, I examined the architectural and historical backgrounds, and analysed the elements, techniques and principles of color design. The result of this study is as follows ; 1. 'Danchung' was originated from the practical functions in Chinese wooden architecture, and developed to embody sensuous beauty in Buddhist temple. The techniques and principles of color design and color tone of Korean and japanese Danchung had been similar in the ancient ages. But little by little they have differed in its function and color tone. So they are very different in modern times. 2. The dominant colors of Korean Danchung are red and green as 'Sang-nok Ha-dan(上綠下丹)', but Japanese's is only red as 'Bak-gan Juk-sun(白間赤線)' 3. Korean Danchung expresses and accentuates the important structural elements in three dimensions, on the other hand japanese Danchung takes two dimensional decoration on the unstructural elements 4. When seen in general, in Korean Danchung colors and their light and shade are simple and patternized. In the meantime, Japanese Danchung has many configurational expressions in general and is closed to paintings or picture.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze common features and methodological differences of PN-spatial characteristics found in architectural theories and works of contemporary young architects in Japan, such as Sou Fujimoto, Yo shimada, Keisuke Maeda and Junya Ishigami. These architects have paid attention to space between nature and inner space and have tried to establish their own architectural theory on that. Such space is ambiguous and PN-spatial in a way that it has features of both nature and inner space. Ambiguousness is a characteristic of modern architecture and PN-spatial characteristics are one of the features of Japanese architecture. This study aims to analyze the architectural theories and works of contemporary young architects in Japan from the perspective of PN-space and to draw methodological differences and common features. Their theories and works have common features in terms of 'ambiguous spatial boundary', 'unregulated spatial territory', 'detoured circulation' and 'architectural motifs', but each has their own methodology. To sum up, the works and theories of the Japanese young architects contain the philosophy and discourse of modern architecture in general. To be sure, they clearly have characteristics of Japanese architecture, which needs to be studied constantly.

  • The purpose of this study is to search for values and meanings of everydayness as a design concept by organizing concepts of 'everydayness' shown in contemporary architecture and systematically describing its characteristics through various analysis methods. 'Eerydayness' shown in contemporary architecture is defined and the criteria of case study are suggested, so that characteristics of everyday can be identified by systematically classifying and analyzing the Japanese cases in order to find the values and meanings of everydayness. The findings of this study are as follows: first, materials that show users' everydayness has indefinite potential as an element of architecture concept, and they play the role of communication and sympathy between architecture and users; second, implementation of everydayness leads to design emergence; third, everydayness can be widely applied to architecture; fourth, everydayness can be implemented regardless of architecture uses. In conclusion, the value of everydayness in contemporary architecture is that it draws user-based diverse and fresh architectural expressions that lead to opulent designs. To users, everydayness improves satisfaction of life gained from architecture and provides rich life environment because it changed common human life to a form of art.
