The practice pattern of pediatric dentistry in the university dental hospital has been changing for the last several decades, due to socioeconomic changes, developments in dental materials and increasing number of private pediatric dental clinics. The purpose of this study is to survey the changing patterns of pediatric dental treatment in the university dental hospital and to present the future direction for pediatric dentistry. Patient distribution and practice trends were reviewed based on the OCS (order communication system) records of the department of pediatric dentistry, Seoul National University Dental Hospital from 2001 to 2008. Results were as follows; 1. The number of patients increased up to 2005 and decreased in 2006, and has remained constant up to 2008. 2. The proportion of preventive and orthodontic treatment increased and the proportion of restorative and pulpal treatment decreased. 3. In restorative treatment, amalgam restoration decreased and resin restoration increased. 4. Frequency of sedation decreased in 2006, 2007 and increased in 2008. 5. Frequency of general anesthesia increased up to 2008.
Eoil basalt in the Eoil basin and Yeonil basalt and its related volcanic rocks in Guryongpo and Daebo area were researched and analyzed to purse the tectonic settings and magma characteristics of those Tertiary volcanic rocks in the south-east Korean peninsula. It is highly suggested that zoning, resorption and sieve texture in plagioclase and reaction rim in pyroxene indicate unstable tectonic environments and complex volcanism in the study area. Volcanic rocks from Janggi basin are identified as basalt and basaltic andesite in TAS diagram and sub-alkaline series in terms of magma differentiation. $Na_2O$ and $K_2O$ show positive trend however FeO, CaO, MgO and $P_2O_5$ indicate negative trend in Harker variation diagram with $SiO_2$. Basaltic rocks from Eoil area are identified as calc-alkaline series in AFM diagram and show medium K series calc-alkaline in $K_2O-SiO_2$ diagram. Compatible trace elements of Co, Ni, V, Zn, and Sc in Yeonil basalt show negative trend with crystallization but incompatible trace element of Ba, Rb show positive trend with $SiO_2$ 0.81~1.00 of $Eu/Eu^*$ value suggests minor effect of plagioclase fractionation in Yeonil basaltic rocks. Plagioclase composition of Eoil basalt ranges from $An_{63.46-98.38}\;Ab_{1.62-32.96}\;Or_{0-3.58}$ (anorthite-labradorite) in core to $An_{40.89-82.44}\;Ab_{17.10-46.43}\;Or_{0-12.68}$ (bytownite-labradorite) in rim. $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ and 143Nd;t44Nd ranges 0.704090~0.704717 and 0.512705~0.512822 respectively. Negative linear trends in 87Sr/86Sr and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$ correlation diagram indicate that magma produced Yeonil basalt and basaltic andesite has been originated as partial melting product of mantle wedge by subducting Pacific plate affected by oceanic crust with less effect of continental crust indicating calc-alkaline magma characteristics.

The edible crab is among the rich resources that can be used as materials for food products, but living crabs and crabs marinated in soy sauce are the only widely utilized materials for food products. For seafood development, research is needed to promote the use of crabs in various products. In this study, the quality changes of fried rice prepared with crab meat, crab emulsion sauce and crab cooker effluent were investigated. The pH and acidity values did not show any significant difference at $-20^{\circ}C$. The acidity of the fried rice continuously increased during storage at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$. The VBN and TBA values of the fried rice stored at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$ were significantly higher than those of the fried rice stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ during the storage period. The viable cell count of the fried rice stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ changed little during the storage period while that of the fried rice stored at 4 and $25^{\circ}C$ rapidly increased over 2 weeks. For the fried rice stored at $-20^{\circ}C$, the overall quality did not show significant differences during the storage period. In conclusion, the best storage temperature for both quality and safety was found to be $-20^{\circ}C$. At such storage temperature, the quality of the stored instant rice using crab meat did not change, and through research the expanding possibilities of using crab materials were confirmed.

Cancer chemotherapy drugs command a large share of the market, and the development of new therapeutics with high efficacy and specificity is an active area of study. Recently, the development of cancer therapeutics from natural products targeting angiogenesis has drawn attention due to conventional chemotherapeutics showing serious side effects and resistance in cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the pharmacological efficacy of Gomisin A, an active ingredient of Schizandra chinensis baillon, on tumor growth and metastasis. Administration of Gomisin A at 10 and 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ reduced tumor growth in vivo by $80.5{\pm}8.1%$ and $96.2{\pm}2%$, respectively, compared with positive tumor controls. Treatment of Gomisin A in normal and various tumor cell lines did not exert significant toxicity. Mice treated with Gomisin A at a concentration of 10 and 100 ${\mu}g$/head showed a significant reduction in tumor-induced angiogenesis of $151{\pm}16.9%$ and $98.5{\pm}29.5%$, respectively. Furthermore, tumor metastasis analysis revealed that the administration of Gomisin A at a concentration of 10 and 100 ${\mu}g$/head inhibited tumor metastasis by $13.5{\pm}8.56%$ and $58.3{\pm}9.12%$, respectively. In addition, Gomisin A significantly decreased cell adhesion of the B16BL6 cells to the extracellular matrix. These results demonstrate that Gomisin A inhibits tumor growth via suppression of angiogenesis and tumor metastasis inhibition, without cellular toxicity. The pharmacological efficacy of Gomisin A suggests that it may be a potential candidate for the development of cancer drugs.

Background : Most previous studies regarding the role of GSTMl and GSTT1 on lung cancer risk have been focused mainly on male smokers. However, epidemiological characteristics, histologic types and risk factors are different in female and male lung cancers, we investigated the association between these genotypes and lung cancer risk in males and females separately. Materials and Methods : The study population consisted of 253 lung cancer (153 males and 100 females) and 243 controls (140 males and 103 females). GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes were determined by a multiplex PCR. Results : In the male population, neither GSTM1 nor GSTT1 null genotype showed significant difference between cases and controls. In the female population, the frequencies of GSTM1 null genotype showed no significant difference between cases and controls. However, the frequencies of GSTT1 null genotype was significantly higher in cases (70.3%) than controls (55.3%, odds ratio (OR)=2.18; 95% confidence interval (CI=l.21-3.93). When the female population was stratified by age and smoking status, the ORs for GSTT1 null genotype were significantly higher in subgroups of ${\leq}60$ years (OR=4.82; 95% CI=l.61-14.4) and never-smokers (OR=4.29; 95% CI=1.94-9.48) but not in subgroups of >60 years or smokers. When stratifying the female never-smokers by age, the ORs for GSTT1 null genotype were significantly higher in both age groups of ${\leq}60$ years (OR=7.64; 95% CI=2.00-29.2) and >60 years (OR=2.89; 95% CI=1.05-7.94). Conclusion : We found that GSTT1 null genotype was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in Korean female never-smokers. This result suggests that GSTT1 null genotype could be used as a biomarker for genetic susceptibility to lung cancer in Korean female never-smokers.

We investigated the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of Doragi (Platycodon grandiflorum) at different aging temperatures (60, 70 and $80^{\circ}C$) and for various periods of duration (5, 10, 15, 30 and 50 days). As the temperature and duration were increased, the pH of Doragi water extracts decreased from 5.22 to 4.17, whereas total acidity increased from 0.265 to 0.998 lactic acid eq.%. In addition, browning index went up from 0.092 to 1.002 and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content steeply rose to 50.40 mg/g from its initial zero value with an increase in temperature and duration. The radical scavenging activity of ethanol extracts was enhanced with a rise in temperature and duration as evident from the value of total polyphenol content (0.589 to 2.358 mg/g), DPPH (0.149 to 1.244 mg Trolox eq/g) and ABTS (0.354 to 1.509 mg Trolox eq/g). The correlation between physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities was high; the correlation between pH and total acidity showed a r value of -0.910 (P<0.01), whereas between browning index and 5-HMF content, the r value was 0.880 (P<0.01). Total polyphenol content and DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were highly correlated with the r value of 0.885 (P<0.01) and 0.745 (P<0.01), respectively.

The study examined and compared the physicochemical and characteristics of various rice brand varieties and private brand products on the market. The moisture content in the proximate composition of rice was 15.67~17.03%, crude protein content was 5.73~6.30%, crude lipid content was 0.38~0.95%, and crude ash content was 0.23~0.56 %. Ilmi and Ilpum had high moisture content, whereas Gosihikkari and Hopyeong had high crude protein content. In the Hunter's color value of rice flour, L value was 96.76~97.27, a value was -1.63~-0.63, and b value was 2.00~2.60. The WAI was 1.21~1.39, WSI was 0.63~0.93%, and amylose content was 14.63~20.86%, respectively; Gosihikkari and Ilmi showed the lowest values. The X-ray diffraction patterns of rice flours of all varieties showed an A shape. For the amylogram properties of rice flour, initial pasting temperature was $59.57{\sim}63.23^{\circ}C$, maximum viscosity was 569.00~718.67 B.U. (Brabender Units), breakdown was 303.00~423.67 B.U., and setback was 212.67~265.33 B.U.. For differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) of rice flour, onset temperature was $54.66{\sim}58.63^{\circ}C$, peak temperature was $65.87{\sim}68.14^{\circ}C$, end temperature was $73.37{\sim}75.54^{\circ}C$, and enthalpy was 1.98~2.95 cal/g. The rice varieties with high internal density and initial pasting temperature as well as low crude protein content, WAI, amylose content, and setback can be classified as good. Gosihikkari in Gyeonggi Province, Ilmi and Hopyeong in Jeollanam-do, and Samgwang in Chungcheongnam-do are among them.

The aim of this study was to provide basic data in managing the project that was carried out on Bulgwangcheon in a nature-friendly way to improve the conditions around the areas, which was brought to completion in 2002, based on changes in ecological characteristics. For this propose, this study examined documents related to the project, compared physical and enviromnental changes before and after the project was conducted and analyzed changes in the stream ecosystem. The result showed that in areas that effluent water was often observed, especially when it rained, the river wall was washed away and vegetation was found damaged. As for actual vegetation, this study compared planting coverage of each section of the research area and actual vegetation charts. The results indicated that Lespedeza spp., Aster koraiensis among mixed seeds that were planted in the reservoir path were almost swept away while Festuca arundinacea dominated the areas. Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorns and Salix gracilistyla which had been planted in a small number were also almost washed out though a small number of them were left to form a colony. After examining the topography and structure of the plant community, this study found that areas where mixed seed were planted had changed into two types of vegetation: First type of area is dominated by P and R which are usually raised in apron with abundant floating particles. The second type of area is dominated by dry gramineous plant such as F and A. Areas around low flow channel where Phragmites communis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Salix gracilistyla planting construction method is applied was washed away with the width of low flow channel reduced. Though P, M and S formed a small community in some areas around the low flow area, they were in small number and in composition of simple plant species. Two ways were suggested in this study to manage the stream in an ecological way. First, adequate revetment construction methods should be applied by monitoring the flow of the stream as well as considering the flood control of urban streams. Second, target vegetation communities that are suitable for the environment of the stream should be chosen and be plantedconstantly with high density. At the same time, ornamental native plants shouldn't be planted as they have been and disturbing vegetation should be removed.
The root of lxeris dentata forma albiflora was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH and solvent fractionated with EtOAc, n-BuOH and water, successively. From the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions, four sesquiterpene compounds were isolated through the repeated silica gel and ODS column chromatographies. The chemical structures were determined as zaluzanin C (1), $9{\alpha}-hydroxyguaian-4(l5),10(14),11(13)-triene-6,12-olide$ (2), $3{\beta}-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranosyl-8{\alpha}-hydroxyguaian-4(15),10(14 )-diene-6,12-olide$ (3), and $3{\beta}-O-{\beta}- D-glucopyranosyl-8{\beta}hydroxyguaian-10(14)-ene-6,12-olide$ (4) through the interpretation of several spectral data including 2D-NMR. Some showed the inhibitory effects on DGAT (Diacylglycerol acyltransferase), ($IC_{50}$ values of 1, 2: 0.13, 0.10 mM), the catalyzing enzymes of the intracellular esterification of diacylglycerol and FPTase (Famesyl-protein transferase), ($IC_{50}$ values of 1, 2: 0.15, 0.18 mM), the farnesylation enzyme for Ras protein charge of cancer promotion.
Background: The brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) level has been reported in some studies to be associated with the occurrence of atrial fbrillation (AF). The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential usefulness of the BNP level as a predictor of the occurrence of postoperative (postop) AF and to assess the relationship of the BNP level with the onset of AF and the restoration of sinus rhythm. Material and Method: From January 1, 2005 to February 28, 2006, 82 patients without a history of atrial arrhythmia that had undergone cardiac surgery were enrolled in the study. Blood samples for plasma BNP were drawn daily for all these patients from the preoperative (preop) day to the 7th postop day. The patient records were reviewed and postop EKGs were checked daily for AF until the time of discharge. Result: Patients were divided into two groups based on development of postop AF. Postoperative AF developed in 26 patients (31.7%). There was no significant statistical difference in age, sex distribution, preop left ventricle ejection fraction, hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, or the use of beta blockers between the non-postop AF and postop AF group. More patients in the AF group had undergone valve surgery (39.3% versus 76.9%, p=0.002). The preop left atrium size was significantly larger in the AF patients ($43.8{\pm}10.3 mm$ versus $49.8{\pm}11.5 mm$, p=0.029). The preop plasma BNP levels were higher in the postop AF patients ($144.1{\pm}20.8 pg/mL$ versus $267.5{\pm}68 pg/mL$, p=0.034). In the postop AF group, the plasma BNP level was the highest on the 3rd postop day. Postop AF developed in most patients by the 3rd postop day; restored sinus rhythm developed by the 7th postop day. Conclusion: Elevated plasma BNP levels may lead to the occurrence of postop AF in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Patients who have a high risk of postop AF should be considered for aggressive prophylactic antiarrhythmic therapy.
