Investigating the role of Sirtuins in cell reprogramming

  • Cell reprogramming has been considered a powerful technique in the regenerative medicine field. In addition to diverse its strengths, cell reprogramming technology also has several drawbacks generated during the process of reprogramming. Telomere shortening caused by the cell reprogramming process impedes the efficiency of cell reprogramming. Transcription factors used for reprogramming alter genomic contents and result in genetic mutations. Additionally, defective mitochondria functioning such as excessive mitochondrial fission leads to the limitation of pluripotency and ultimately reduces the efficiency of reprogramming. These problems including genomic instability and impaired mitochondrial dynamics should be resolved to apply cell reprograming in clinical research and to address efficiency and safety concerns. Sirtuin (NAD+-dependent histone deacetylase) has been known to control the chromatin state of the telomere and influence mitochondria function in cells. Recently, several studies reported that Sirtuins could control for genomic instability in cell reprogramming. Here, we review recent findings regarding the role of Sirtuins in cell reprogramming. And we propose that the manipulation of Sirtuins may improve defects that result from the steps of cell reprogramming.

Some Observations for Portfolio Management Applications of Modern Machine Learning Methods

  • Recently, artificial intelligence has reached the level of top information technologies that will have significant influence over many aspects of our future lifestyles. In particular, in the fields of machine learning technologies for classification and decision-making, there have been a lot of research efforts for solving estimation and control problems that appear in the various kinds of portfolio management problems via data-driven approaches. Note that these modern data-driven approaches, which try to find solutions to the problems based on relevant empirical data rather than mathematical analyses, are useful particularly in practical application domains. In this paper, we consider some applications of modern data-driven machine learning methods for portfolio management problems. More precisely, we apply a simplified version of the sparse Gaussian process (GP) classification method for classifying users' sensitivity with respect to financial risk, and then present two portfolio management issues in which the GP application results can be useful. Experimental results show that the GP applications work well in handling simulated data sets.

Identification of user's Motion Patterns using Motion Capture System

  • Objective:The purpose of this study is to identify motion patterns for cellular phone and propose a method to identify motion patterns using a motion capture system. Background: In a smart device, the introduction of tangible interaction that can provide new experience to user plays an important role for improving user's emotional satisfaction. Firstly, user's motion patterns have to be identified to provide an interaction type using user's gesture or motion. Method: In this study, a method to identify motion patterns using a motion capture system and user's motion patterns for using cellular phone was studied. Twenty-two subjects participated in this study. User's motion patterns were identified through motion analysis. Results: Typical motion patterns for shaking, shaking left and right, shaking up and down, and turning for using cellular phone were identified. Velocity and acceleration for each typical motion pattern were identified, too. Conclusion: A motion capture system could be effectively used to identify user's motion patterns for using cellular phone. Application: Typical motion patterns can be used to develop a tangible user interface for handheld device such as smart phone and a method to identify motion patterns using motion analysis can be applied in motion patterns identification of smart device.

Visual Perception Characteristics of Surface Unevenness - Focused on Orange Peel Effect -

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify visual perception of and satisfaction with the orange peel effect of surface. The orange peel effect is a type of finish on painted or coated surface. Background: Gloss paint sprayed on a smooth surface (such as car body, smart phone, and electric home appliances, etc.) should also dry into a smooth surface. Then, a surface resembling the texture of an orange peel can be caused by some factors. The orange peel effect can degrade user's satisfaction with a product. Method: Visual perception and emotional satisfaction were subjectively evaluated using Likert scale. The significance of orange peel effect on visual perception and satisfaction were then analyzed by the analysis of variance. The correlation between visual perception and satisfaction was also analyzed. Results: Surface roughness significantly influenced visual perception and emotional satisfaction. The level of visual perception increased and emotional satisfaction decreased with the increase of orange peel effect. Emotional satisfaction decreased with the increase of visual perception level. Conclusion: It was identified that orange peel phenomenon on surface was a very important factor for emotional satisfaction. The orange peel effect on the surface of a product should be minimized to improve the emotional satisfaction of the product. Application: The result of this study can be applied to the texture design of the body of a car, smart phones, and electric home appliances, etc.

메모리 요소를 활용한 신경망 연구 동향 (A Survey on Neural Networks Using Memory Component)

  • 최근 순환 신경 망(Recurrent Neural Networks)은 시간에 대한 의존성을 고려한 구조를 통해 순차 데이터(Sequential data)의 예측 문제 해결에서 각광받고 있다. 하지만 순차 데이터의 시간 스텝이 늘어남에 따라 발생하는 그라디언트 소실(Gradients vanishing)이 문제로 대두되었다. 이를 해결하기 위해 장단기 기억 모델(Long Short-Term Memory)이 제안되었지만, 많은 데이터를 저장하고 장기간 보존하는 데에 한계가 있다. 따라서 순환 신경망과 메모리 요소(Memory component)를 활용한 학습 모델인 메모리-증대 신경망(Memory-Augmented Neural Networks)에 대한 연구가 최근 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 딥 러닝(Deep Learning) 분야의 화두로 떠오른 메모리-증대 신경망 주요 모델들의 구조와 특징을 열거하고, 이를 활용한 최신 기법들과 향후 연구 방향을 제시한다.

상변화 물질을 이용한 열전지 단열성능 향상에 관한 연구 (Enhancement of Thermal Insulation Performance with Phase Change Material for Thermal Batteries)

  • Thermal batteries are primary reserve power sources, which are activated upon the melting of eutectic electrolytes by the ignition of heat sources. Therefore, sufficient thermal insulation is absolutely needed for the stable operation of thermal batteries. Currently, excessive amount of heat sources is being used to compensate the heat loss in the cell stack along with the insertion of metal plates and thermal insulators to reserve heat at the both ends of cell stack. However, there is a possibility that the excessive heat flows into the cell stack, causing a thermal runaway at the early stage of discharge. At the same time, the internal temperature of thermal batteries cannot be maintained above the battery operating temperature at the later stage of discharge because of the insufficient insulation. Therefore, the effects of Phase Changing Material(PCM) plates were demonstrated in this study, which can replace the metal and insulating plates, to improve the thermal insulation performance and safety of thermal batteries.

시베리아 산불이 2003년 봄철 동아시아 오존 농도에 끼치는 영향 연구 (A study of the Effects of Siberian Wildfires on Ozone Concentrations over East Asia in Spring 2003)

  • Global climate warming induced by long-lived greenhouse gases is expected to cause increases in wildfire frequencies and intensity in boreal forest regions of mid- and high-latitudes in the future. Siberian forest fires are one of important sources for air pollutants such as ozone and aerosols over East Asia. Thus an accurate quantification of forest fire influences on air quality is crucial, in particular considering its higher occurrences expected under the future warming climate conditions. We here use the 3-D global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) with the satellite constrained fire emissions to quantify Siberian fire effects on ozone concentrations in East Asia. Our focus is mainly on spring 2003 when the largest fires occurred over Siberia in the past decade. We first evaluated the model by comparing to the EANET observations. The model reproduced observed ozone concentrations in spring 2003 with the high $R^2$ of 0.77 but slightly underestimated by 20%. Enhancements in seasonal mean ozone concentrations were estimated from the difference in simulations with and without Siberian fires and amounted up to 24 ppbv over Siberia. Effects of Siberian fires also resulted in 3-10 ppbv incresases in Korea and Japan. These increases account for about 5-15% of the ozone air quality standard of 60 ppbv in Korea, indicating a significant effect of Siberian fires on ozone concentrations. We found however that possible changes in regional meteorology due to Siberian fires may also affect air quality. Further study on the interaction between regional air quality and meteorology is necessary in the future.

KOMPSAT-3 영상의 기하정확도 분석 (Analysis of Geolocation Accuracy of KOMPSAT-3 Imagery)

  • 본 논문에서는 다목적실용위성 3호(KOMPSAT-3) 영상의 기하정확도에 대해 보고한다. KOMPSAT 3호는 2012년 5월 18일 성공적으로 발사되어 지난 3월부터 상용 보급되기 시작하였다. 본 논문에서는 동일 지역을 촬영한 4장의 KOMPSAT-3 영상을 이용하여 초기센서모델, 정밀센서모델, 스테레오 및 다중영상모델의 위치 정확도 평가를 수행하였다. KOMPSAT-3 단일영상은 기준점 없이 30 m 내외의 위치 정확도를 제공하며, 기준점으로부터 정밀 기하 보정된 KOMPSAT-3 영상은 1 m 또는 그 이내의 위치정확도를 제공하는 것이 확인되었다. 또한 KOMPSAT-3 스테레오 영상 및 다중 영상으로부터 취득한 3차원 위치 좌표는 서브미터급 수평 수직 정확도를 보여주었다. 전반적으로 KOMPSAT-3 영상은 KOMPSAT-2 영상에 비해 훨씬 개선된 기하학적 성능을 보여주며 향후 정밀 위치정보 취득을 위해 서브미터급 국외 위성자료를 대체할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Analysis of Geometric and Spatial Image Quality of KOMPSAT-3A Imagery in Comparison with KOMPSAT-3 Imagery

  • This study investigates the geometric and spatial image quality analysis of KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair. KOMPSAT-3A is, the latest satellite of KOMPSAT family, a Korean earth observation satellite operating in optical bands. A KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair was taken on 23 November, 2015 with 0.55 m ground sampling distance over Terrassa area of Spain. The convergence angle of KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair was estimated as $58.68^{\circ}$. The investigation was assessed through the evaluation of the geopositioning analysis, image quality estimation and the accuracy of automatic Digital Surface Model (DSM) generation and compared with those of KOMPSAT-3 stereo pair with the convergence angle of $44.80^{\circ}$ over the same area. First, geopositioning accuracy was tested with initial rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) and after compensating the biases of the initial RPCs by manually collected ground control points. Then, regarding image quality, relative edge response was estimated for manually selected points visible from two stereo pairs. Both of the initial and bias-compensated positioning accuracy and the quality assessment result expressed that KOMPSAT-3A images showed higher performance than those of KOMPSAT-3 images. Finally, the accuracy of DSMs generated from KOMPSAT-3A and KOMPSAT-3 stereo pairs were examined with respect to the reference LiDAR-derived DSM. The various DSMs were generated over the whole coverage of individual stereo pairs with different grid spacing and over three types of terrain; flat, mountainous and urban area. Root mean square errors of DSM from KOMPSAT-3A pair were larger than those for KOMPSAT-3. This seems due to larger convergence angle of the KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair.

Sliding Factor Development on Mechanical Emotion in Mobile Phone of Slide Type

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to find the optimal values of sliding factors which influence the mechanical emotion of users when they use sliding type mobile phones. Background: There are various researches that study the emotion of using mobile phones. They focus the correlation between emotion words and design factors and use the commercial products by the subjects in the experiment. However, it has a limit in finding the optimal point of emotional factors because we can search the restricted values in the mass production of the products. Therefore, we will find the optimal points by realizing the full range of the user's mechanical emotion. Method: First, we need to get the detailed factors which can describe the mechanical emotion in sliding up and down the mobile phone. Next, we find the control factors by considering the correlation between the factors of the sliding emotion and the possibility of quantitative design. To find the optimal points on the control factors, we make a sliding evaluation system which can help users feel the sliding mechanical emotion by realizing control factors. Finally, we find the optimal points by doing the experiment the system being used. Results: The critical values of the factors which are the main variables of this study are Open Max Force and Dead point Ratio. The optimal point of the Open Max Force is 200~250g/f, and the Dead point Ratio is 40~50%. Conclusion: In this study we develop the sliding evaluation system to realize the control factors of the sliding type phone and find the optimal values of the critical factors. Application: The results can be used as the criteria for designing sliding type phone.
