Both primary hepatoma and amebic liver abscess are probably the most common space-occupying disease of the liver in Korea, and the importance of their accurate distinction can not be overemphasized. Radiogold hepatoscanning has been widely used at St. Mary's Hospital, and recently blood disappearance rate of colloidal $^{198}Au$ has been introduced in the study of hepatic ailments. A review of the literature revealed few previous publications concerning the differential features of the two conditions although some characteristic scan findings of each condition have been described. The present study is aimed at a critical review and analysis of various photoscan findings and blood disappearance rate determinations of colloidal $^{198}Au$ of 34 cases of primary hepatoma and 30 cases of amebic liver abscess. Among many scan manifestations, prominence of the uninvolved liver tissue, "hemispherical cold area," and splenic uptake are much more commonly encountered in primary hepatoma and the blood disappearance rate tends to be far more frequently delayed in primary hepatoma than in abscess providing at least a statistically useful basis of distinction of the two diseases.

The survivability of the temporary nozzle extension for an accurate thrust measurement in a full-scaled combustor has been investigated through thermal analyses. The effects of nozzle extension materials and the thickness of thermal barrier coating (TBC) have been elucidated. It has been found that thermal survivability cannot be guaranteed without TBC. The maximum temperature of the nozzle extension decreased with increasing TBC thickness. For hot firing tests, the TBC is thought to be indispensable to the thermo-structural survivability of the nozzle extension made of steel.
This paper studies the origin of low back-scattering area appeared on the SAR image taken on the coastal waters off the southeast coast of Korea on July 5, 2000. Cold waters were frequently observed during summer on this coastal waters, and quasi-simultaneously taken AVHRR and SeaWiFS images also showed cold surface waters and high concentration of chlorophyll-a, respectively. By synergetic analysis of multi-sensor satellite images, it is strongly suggested that the cold and nutrient rich upwelling waters caused the high phytoplankton density and high biological activities in the water producing natural films for low back-scattering.

3-D linear acoustic analysis has been performed to elucidate damping characteristics of large Helmholtz acoustic cavities in FASTRAC combustor. Acoustic impedance concept has been introduced to quantify combustion stabilization capacity. For a given acoustic cavity, sonic velocity in cavity to achieve an optimal tuning has been determined and satisfactory agreement with the previous results has been obtained. Feasible estimation of sonic velocity in acoustic cavity has been devised. Results show similar trends without significant deviations, which can be used in the procedure of design and verification of acoustic cavity. From the satisfactory results, investigation of other combustors with acoustic cavities which have shown combustion instabilities will be done as future works.
To investigate the gene rearrangement via short repeated sequences in chloroplast DNA, the pattern of heterologous gene clusters containing the 151 bp repeated sequence with the development of plastid was compared in rice and the homologous gene clusters from various plant sources were searched for comparative analysis. Southern blot analysis of rice DNA using rp12 gene containing 151 bp repeated sequence as a probe showed the presence of heterologous gene clusters. Such heterologous gene clusters varied with the development of plastid. Also it was observed that the heterologous gene clusters were observed in all of the rice cultivars used in this work. Finally the comparative analysis of DNA sequence of the homologous gene clusters from various plants showed the evolutionary gene rearragngement via short repeated sequence among plants. These results suggest the possible relationship between the plastid development and gene rearrangement through short repeated sequences.

In this study, a three-dimensional finite-element analysis code has been developed to predict acoustic behaviors in rocket combustion chambers and to quantitatively evaluate acoustic stability margins for various designs with passive stabilization devices such as baffle and acoustic resonators. As a validation case, computations are made for combustion chambers with/without a hub-and-six-blade baffle which are developed in the KSR-III Development Program. Compared with experimental results from ambient acoustic test, the numerical approach reasonably well predicts acoustic pressure responses to acoustic oscillation excitation for both unbaffled and baffled combustion chambers and yields quantitatively good agreement for acoustic damping effects of baffle installation in terms of damping factor ratio and resonant frequency shift.
An ${\alpha}$-L-arabinofuranosidase (TmAFase) from Thermotoga maritima MSB8 is a highly thermostable exo-acting hemicellulase that exhibits a relatively higher activity towards arabinan and arabinoxylan, compared with other glycoside hydrolase 51 family enzymes. In the present study, we carried out the enzymatic characterization and structural analysis of TmAFase. Tight domain associations found in TmAFase, such as an inter-domain disulfide bond (Cys306 and Cys476) in each monomer, a novel extended arm (amino acids 374-385) at the dimer interface, and total 12 salt bridges in the hexamer, may account for the thermostability of the enzyme. One of the xylan binding determinants (Trp96) was identified in the active site, and a region of amino acids (374-385) protrudes out forming an obvious wall at the substrate-binding groove to generate a cavity. The altered cavity shape with a strong negative electrostatic distribution is likely related to the unique substrate preference of TmAFase towards branched polymeric substrates.

The Integrated Offshore Standard Specification (IOSS) involves Korean shipyards, classification societies, research institutes, the Korean industrial society, engineering companies, and oil companies with the objective of reducing costs and risks without compromising safety in international offshore engineering procurement construction (EPC) projects using new standardized bulk components and qualification procedures. The activities of the IOSS include the analysis of the existing rules and regulations to achieve the best standardization, which is reflected in the best practices, and minimize the variables in regulations and rules. In addition, a standard inventory of shapes and dimensions, referred to as specifications, is proposed in the IOSS. In this paper, the aluminum tertiary standardization part (IOSS S102-1/2 S104: Specification for Structural Tertiary Design) is presented with the details of the procedures, background reviews, and cost-benefit analyses of the design and verification methods for standard designs in the IOSS standardization items. Based on the cost-benefit analysis, the application of standardized aluminum tertiary items to offshore projects has significant advantages in terms of maintenance and repair compared to the carbon steel tertiary items utilized in current industrial practices.
Today's Internet is one of the necessaries of our life. Anomalies of the Internet provoke social problems. For that reason, Internet Measurement which studies characteristics on Internet traffic attracts pubic attention. Recently, Traffic Dispersion Graph (TDG), a novel traffic analysis method, was proposed. The TDG is not a statistical analysis method but a graphical visualization method on interactions among network components. In this paper, we propose a new anomaly detection paradigm and its technique using TDG. The existing studies have focused on detecting anomalous packets of flows. On the other hand, we focus on detecting the sources of anomalous traffic. To realize our paradigm, we designed the TDG Clustering method. Through this method, we could classify anomalous hosts infected by various worm viruses. We obtained normal traffic through dropping traffic of the anomalous hosts. Especially, we expect that the TDG clustering method can be applied to real-time anomaly detection because calculations of the method are fast.

A study has been performed to investigate the thermo-mechanical effects of thermal barrier coating on liquid rocket regenerative cooling chamber using finite element analysis. Two kinds of thermal barrier coatings were studied on the same loading condition: first, NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$, coating which is currently applied to the developing combustion chamber and second, Ni-Cr coating which might be applied in the future. Analysis results showed that NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating has better decreasing effect of temperature than the Ni-Cr coating. As a results, temperature and deformation of the cooling channel in the NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating were also less than those of the Ni-Cr coating. The Ni-Cr coating has no effect on a structural stability of the outer jacket but the NiCrAlY-$ZrO_2$ coating reduced the effective stress of the outer jacket and enhanced the structural stability of the chamber.
