Synthesis of ZnCo2O3 oxide is performed by sol-gel method via nitrate-citrate route. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) study shows monoclinic unit cell having lattice parameters: a = 5.721(1) Å, b = 8.073(2) Å, c = 5.670(1) Å, β = 93.221(8)°, space group P2/m and Z = 4. Average crystallite sizes determined by Scherrer equation are the range ~14-32 nm, whereas SEM micrographs show nano-micro meter size particles formed in ZnCo2O3. Endothermic peak at ~798 K in the Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) trace without weight loss could be due to structural transformation and the endothermic peak ~1143 K with weight loss is due to reversible loss of O2 in air atmosphere. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis profile shows the presence of elements Zn, Co and O which indicates the purity of the sample. Magnetic measurements in the range of +12 kOe to -12 kOe at 10 K, 77 K, 120 K and at 300 K by PPMS-II Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) shows hysteresis loops having very low values of the coercivity and retentivity which indicates the weakly ferromagnetic nature of the oxide. Observed X-band EPR isotropic lineshapes at 300 K and 77 K show positive g-shift at giso ~2.230 and giso ~2.217, respectively which is in agreement with the presence of paramagnetic site Co2+(3d7) in the oxide. DC conductivity value of 2.875 ×10-8 S/cm indicates very weakly semiconducting nature of ZnCo2O3 at 300 K. DRS absorption bands ~357 nm, ~572 nm, ~619 nm and ~654 nm are due to the d-d transitions 4T1g(4F)→2Eg(2G), 4T1g(4F)→4T1g(4P), 4T1g(4F)→4A2g(4F), 4T1g(4F)→4T2g(4F), respectively in octahedral ligand field around Co2+ ions. Direct band gap energy, Eg~ 1.5 eV in the oxide is obtained by extrapolating the linear part of the Tauc plot to the energy axis indicates fairly strong semiconducting nature of ZnCo2O3.
In this study, the influences of triaxial magnetic field on the wave propagation behavior of anisotropic nanoplates are studied. In order to include small scale effects, nonlocal strain gradient theory has been implemented. To study the nanoplate as a continuum model, the three-dimensional elasticity theory is adopted in Cartesian coordinate. In our study, all the elastic constants are considered and assumed to be the functions of (x, y, z), so all kind of anisotropic structures such as hexagonal and trigonal materials can be modeled, too. Moreover, all types of functionally graded structures can be investigated. eigenvalue method is employed and analytical solutions for the wave propagation are obtained. To justify our methodology, our results for the wave propagation of isotropic nanoplates are compared with the results available in the literature and great agreement is achieved. Five different types of anisotropic structures are investigated in present paper and then the influences of wave number, material properties, nonlocal and gradient parameter and uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial magnetic field on the wave propagation analysis of anisotropic nanoplates are presented. From the best knowledge of authors, it is the first time that three-dimensional elasticity theory and nonlocal strain gradient theory are used together with no approximation to derive the governing equations. Moreover, up to now, the effects of triaxial magnetic field have not been studied with considering size effects in nanoplates. According to the lack of any common approximations in the displacement field or in elastic constant, present theory has the potential to be used as a bench mark for future works.

Liquid crystalline compounds with amine terminal group and related linear and cross-linked liquid crystal polymers with epoxy resin structure were synthesized and characterized to develope matrix materials for polymer dispersed liquid display applications. Both linear and crosslinked side chain type liquid crystal polymers made with aromatic amine mesogens and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether exhibited nematic texture as shown by polarized optical microscope(POM) and their transition temperatures were determined both by DSC and POM. Liquid crystal polymer samples also showed even-odd effect as the spacer length of aromatic amine mesogens were varied, however, the effect was samller than that of low molecular weight mesogens. Changes of nematic-to-isotropic transition($T_{NI}$) of crosslinked type polymer liquid crystals were also disscussed in relation to the concentration change of crosslinking agent 1,10-diaminodecane.

The use of engineering plastics in automotive components is increasing with the trend towards improving the car strength and reducing weight. Among the different choices of materials, engineering plastic emerged as the necessary material for achieving lower costs, reduced weight and improved production efficiency. To produce the automotive parts, it is important to predict defect and validation of injection molding prior to design. Injection molding analysis and structural analysis are widely applied as a part of the design process when developing automotive parts. Injection molding analysis, in particular, involves a highly complicated mechanism that requires deep knowledge of polymer properties as well as an analytic approach different from that used for a general isotropic material when the molded material is used as a structural material. This is because the parts made of polymer have pre-stress factors such as intrinsic deformation and residual stress. The most important factors for injection molded plastic products are injection molding condition and cavity design, taking into account ease of molding, mass production and application. Despite optimal injection molding conditions and cavity design, however, glass fiber orientation is critically linked to strength reduction. The application of injection molding and structural coupled analysis provides a low-cost solution for product molding and structural validation, all prior to the actual molding. The purpose of this study involves the validation, pre-study, and solution of defect in injection-molded polymer automotive parts using the simulation software for injection molding and structural coupled analysis. Finally, this thesis provides validation of an injection molding and structural coupled analytic mechanism that can demonstrate the effect of glass fiber orientation on mechanical strength. Design improvement ideas for the injection molded product of PPS (Poly Phenylene Sulfide)+40% glass fiber are also suggested.

The aim of this paper was to examine the continuous and discontinuous contact problems between the functionally graded (FG) layer pressed with a uniformly distributed load and homogeneous half plane using an analytical method and FEM. The FG layer is made of non-homogeneous material with an isotropic stress-strain law with exponentially varying properties. It is assumed that the contact at the FG layer-half plane interface is frictionless, and only the normal tractions can be transmitted along the contacted regions. The body force of the FG layer is considered in the study. The FG layer was positioned on the homogeneous half plane without any bonds. Thus, if the external load was smaller than a certain critical value, the contact between the FG layer and half plane would be continuous. However, when the external load exceeded the critical value, there was a separation between the FG layer and half plane on the finite region, as discontinuous contact. Therefore, there have been some steps taken in this study. Firstly, an analytical solution for continuous and discontinuous contact cases of the problem has been realized using the theory of elasticity and Fourier integral transform techniques. Then, the problem modeled and two-dimensional analysis was carried out by using ANSYS package program based on FEM. Numerical results for initial separation distance and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for continuous contact case; the start and end points of separation and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for discontinuous contact case were provided for various dimensionless quantities including material inhomogeneity, distributed load width, the shear module ratio and load factor for both methods. The results obtained using FEM were compared with the results found using analytical formulation. It was found that the results obtained from analytical formulation were in perfect agreement with the FEM study.
Thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of a homologous series of penta-O-4-{4'-(cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkyl-D-glucopyranoses(CAGETn, n = 2~10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) has been investigated. The CAGETn with n of 2 and 7 exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases whereas other derivatives showed monotropic nematic phases. This is the first report of glucose derivatives that form thermotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperatures ($T_{iNS}$) of CAGETns and their entropy variation at $T_{iN}$ showed the odd-even effect as a function of n. This behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the side chains as the parity of the spacer is varied. This rationalization also accounts for the observed variation of nematic-crystalline phase transition temperatures ($T_{NkS}$) and associoated entropy change at $T_{Nk}$. The entropy change at $T_{iN}$ or $T_{Nk}$ reaches a mininum at n = 3, before it increases again for n = 4. This may be attributed to the difference in the arrangement of the side groups. The mesophase properties of CAGETns were entirely different from those reported for partially or fully alkylated glucopyranoses. This result suggests that the degree of substitution and chemical structure of the substituents play an important role in the formation of the mesophase structures in the liquid crystals.
A homologous series of linear liquid crystal dimers, the ${\alpha},{\omega}$-bis(4-cyano-azobenzene-4'-oxy)alkanes (CATWETn, where n, the number of methylene units in the spacer, is 2~10) were synthesized, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior were investigated. The CATWETn with n of 3 and 6 exhibited monotropic nematic phases, whereas other derivatives showed enantiotropic nematic phases. The nematic-isotropic transition temperatures of the dimers and their entropy variation at the phase transition showed a large odd-even effect as a function of n. This phase transition behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the spacer on varying the parity of the spacer. The thermal stability and degree of order in the nematic phase and the magnitude of the odd-even effect of CATWETn were similar to those for the methoxy-, nitro-, and pentyl-substituted dimers, while they were significantly different from those for the monomesogenic compounds, 1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkylbromides and the side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers, the poly[1-{4-(4'-cyanophenylazo)phenoxyalkyloxy}ethylene]s. The results were discussed in terms of 'virtual trimer model' by Imrie.
In situ rock mass is generally heterogeneous and discontinuous, with varying degrees of strength along the planes of weakness. The planes of weakness such as joints, faults, cracks and bedding planes, control the strength and deformation characteristics of the rock mass. Subsequently, the stability of underground opening depends upon the spatial distribution of discontinuities and their mechanical properties in relation with geometrical shape of openins as well as the mechanical properties of intact rock materials. Understanding the behaviour of a discontinuous rock mass remains a key issue for improving excavation design in hiかy stressed environments. Although recent advances in rock mechanics have provided guidelines for the design of underground opening in isotropic rock mass, prediction and control of deformation in discontinuous rock masses are still unclear. In this study, parametric study was performed to investigate the plastic zone size, stress distribution and deformation behavior around underground opening in a discontinuous rock mass using a continuum joint model. The solutions were obtained by an elasto-plastic finite difference analysis, employing the Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Non-associated flow rule and perfectly plastic material behavior are also assumed.

Rheological measurement of a thermotropic liquid crystalline poymer (TLCP) is not an easy task since their rheological responses are strongly influenced by a thermal history during a processing and thus the reproducibility of the measurement is poor. In order to find out a cause for the strong influence of the thermal history, rheological measurements and DSC observations of the TLCP having various thermal histories were carried out. It was observed that the TLCP used in this study shows liquid-like behavior at a temperature above a crystal-nematic transition temperature ($280^{\circ}C$), but at the same time crystallization can occur at this temperature range and as a consequence the viscosity of the polymer continuously increases. When the samples are heated beyond the $320^{\circ}C$, all crystals thus formed and the thermal histories were observed to disappear. Crystallization rate of the samples annealed above $320^{\circ}C$ was very low at even the lowed temperature ($280^{\circ}C\;{\sim}\;320^{\circ}C$). Therefore, it is concluded that rheological measurements of TLCP used in this study must be performed after annealed above the nematic-isotropic transition temperature for better reproducibility.
In geological media with anisotropic properties, the strength anisotropy in intact rock is the most important issue in engineering aspects. Point-ioad(P/L) strength test designed to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength(${\sigma}_c$) can be used to evaluate the anisotropic strength characteristics of rocks. The relationship between ${\sigma}_c$ and P/L strength indices(I$_s$), obtained from the banded gneisses distributed in the Cheongyang area, varies depend mainly on the dip angle($\beta$) of foliation. The axial P/L strength indicies(I$_{sa}$) decreases with the increment of $\beta$, whereas diametral P/L strength indices(I$_{sa}$) increase with it. However, the ${\sigma}_c$ decreases with the increments of $\beta$ below about 40$^{\circ}$, but it increases with the increments of $\beta$ over about 40$^{\circ}$ in general. The correlation between ${\sigma}_c$ and I$_s$ suggests that ${\sigma}_c$ is related to the Isa withing low angle($\beta$<40$^{\circ}$) and the I$_{sd}$ within high angle ($\beta$>40$^{\circ}$), respectively. The ratios of I$_s$ to ${\sigma}_c$ are obtained as 11 to 14 in the the gneisses in the study area. The ratio of 24, which is generally adopted value, cannot always be truthworth to the gneisses in the study area. The ratio for the dykes, however, show a good correlation as 21 to 24.5 and, the value of 24 can be used for a homogeneous and isotropic materials such as dykes.
