  • The nucleophilic substitution reactions of bis(Y-aryl) chlorophosphates (1) with substituted anilines and deuterated anilines are investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at 35.0 $^{\circ}C$. The kinetic results of 1 are compared with those of Y-aryl phenyl chlorophosphates (2). The substrate 1 has one more identical substituent Y compared to substrate 2. The cross-interaction between Y and Y, due to additional substituent Y, is significant enough to result in the change of the sign of cross-interaction constant (CIC) from negative ${\rho}_{XY}$ = -1.31 (2) to positive ${\rho}_{XY}$ = +1.91 (1), indicating the change of reaction mechanism from a concerted $S_N2$ (2) to a stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting leaving group departure from the intermediate (1). The deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs) involving deuterated anilines ($XC_6H_4ND_2$) show secondary inverse, $k_H/k_D$ = 0.61-0.87. The DKIEs invariably increase as substituent X changes from electron-donating to electron-withdrawing, while invariably decrease as substituent Y changes from electron-donating to electron-withdrawing. A stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting bond breaking involving a predominant backside attack is proposed on the basis of positive sign of ${\rho}_{XY}$ and secondary inverse DKIEs.

  • The reactions of bis(Y-aryl) chlorothiophosphates (1) with substituted anilines and deuterated anilines are investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at $55.0^{\circ}C$. The Hammett plots for substituent Y variations in the substrates show biphasic concave upwards with a break point at Y = H. The cross-interaction constants (${\rho}_{XY}$) are positive for both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing Y substituents. The kinetic results of 1 are compared with those of Y-aryl phenyl chlorothiophosphates (2). The cross-interaction between Y and Y, due to additional substituent Y, is significant enough to result in the change of the sign of ${\rho}_{XY}$ from negative with 2 to positive with 1. The effect of the cross-interaction between Y and Y on the rate changes from negative role with electron-donating Y substituents to positive role with electron-withdrawing Y substituents, resulting in biphasic concave upward free energy correlation with Y. A stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting leaving group departure from the intermediate involving a predominant frontside attack hydrogen bonded, four-center-type transition state is proposed based on the positive sign of ${\rho}_{XY}$ and primary normal deuterium kinetic isotope effects.

  • Reactions of 1-adamantylmethyl chloroformate ($1-AdCH_2OCOCl$, 1) and 1-adamantylmethyl fluoroformate ($1-AdCH_2OCOF$, 2) in hydroxylic solvents have been studied. Application of the extended Grunwald-Winstein (G-W) equation to solvolyses of 1 in a variety of pure and binary solvents indicates an addition-elimination pathway in the majority of the solvents except an ionization pathway in the solvents of relatively low nucleophilcity and high ionizing power. The solvolyses of 2 show an addition-elimination pathway in all of the mixed solvents. The leaving group effects ($k_F/k_{Cl}$), the kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIEs, $k_{MeOH}/k_{MeOD}$), and the enthalpy and entropy of activation for the solvolyses of 1 and 2 were also calculated. The selectivity values (S) for each solvent composition are reported and discussed. These observations are compared with those previously reported for other alkyl haloformate esters.

  • The kinetic studies on the reactions of dipropyl chlorophosphate (3O) with substituted anilines ($XC_6H_4NH_2$) and deuterated anilines ($XC_6H_4ND_2$) have been carried out in acetonitrile at $55.0^{\circ}C$. The obtained deuterium kinetic isotope effects (DKIEs; $k_H/k_D$) are primary normal ($k_H/k_D$ = 1.09-1.01) with the strongly basic anilines while secondary inverse ($k_H/k_D$ = 0.74-0.82) with the weakly basic anilines. The steric effects of the two ligands on the rates are extensively discussed for the anilinolyses of the ($R_1O$)($R_2O$)P(=O or S)Cl-type chlorophosphates and chlorothiophosphates. A concerted mechanism is proposed with a frontside nucleophilic attack involving a hydrogen-bonded four-center-type transition state for the strongly basic anilines and with a backside attack transition state for the weakly basic anilines on the basis of the DKIEs, primary normal and secondary inverse with the strongly and weakly basic anilines, respectively.

  • The kinetics and mechanism of the reactions of phenyl benzoates with benzylamines and pyrrolidine are investigated in acetonitrile. The variations of ρX (ρXY>0) and ρZ (ρYZ<0) with respect to the substituent in the substrate (σY) indicate that the reactions proceed through a tetrahedral intermediate, T±, with its breakdown in the rate determining step. The large magnitudes of ρZ, ρXY and ρYZ as well as the effects of secondary kinetic isotope effects involving deuterated nucleophiles are also in line with the proposed mechanism.

  • A model system has been established for the evaluation of the uncertainty of the value from measurements of multiple subsamples by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). In this report, we apply this model system for the evaluation of measurement uncertainty in determination of folic acid in infant formula. Five subsamples were analyzed by IDMS. The mean of the measurement results of the five subsamples was assigned as the final measurement value. The standard deviation (s) of the results from five subsamples was attributable to repeatability of the measurement. The uncertainty components in the IDMS measurement methods were categorized into two groups. Group I includes uncertainty components which give common systematic effects to all subsamples and do not contribute to the variation among multiple measurements (repeatability). Group II includes uncertainty components that give random effects on the measurement results, and are related with the measurement repeatability. These random effects are attributed to s. Therefore, the uncertainty of the final value was calculated by combining the standard deviation of the mean of multiple measurements, $s/{\surd}n$ (where n = 5), and the measurement uncertainty associated with the uncertainty components that give systematic effects.

  • The aminolyses of anilinothioethers $(C_6H_5N(CH_3)CH_2SC_6H_4Z)$ in acetonitrile with benzylamines $(XC_6H_4CH_2NH_2)$ have been investigated. The rates are much lower in acetonitrile than in methanol (with aniline). The Bronsted ${\beta}_X$ values are similar but ${\beta}_Z$ values are smaller compared to those for the reactions in MeOH with anilines. The large negative ${\rho}_{XZ}({\cong}-0.8$, after correction for fall-off) value is interpreted to indicate a frontside attack $S_N2$ mechanism, in which the two oppositely changed reaction centers in the TS, $-N^{{\delta}+}{\cdots}S^{{\delta}-}-$, are in close vicinity increasing the interaction between nucleophile and leaving group. The inverse secondary kinetic isotope effects ($k_H/k_D$ < 1.0) are observed with deuterated benzylamines $(XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2)$.

  • The nucleophilic substitution reactions of (2R,4R,5S)-(+)-2-chloro-3,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-1,3,2-oxazaphospholidine 2-sulfide (3) with substituted anilines ($XC_6H_4NH_2$) and deuterated anilines ($XC_6H_4ND_2$) are investigated kinetically in acetonitrile at $5.0^{\circ}C$. The anilinolysis rate of 3 involving a cyclic five-membered ring is considerably fast because of small negative value of the entropy of activation (${\Delta}S^\neq=-2cal\;mol^{-1}\;K^{-1}$) over considerably unfavorable enthalpy of activation (${\Delta}H^\neq=18.0\;kcal\;mol^{-1}$). Great enthalpy and small negative entropy of activation are ascribed to sterically congested transition state (TS) and bulk solvent structure breaking in the TS. A concerted $S_N2$ mechanism with a backside nucleophilic attack is proposed on the basis of the secondary inverse deuterium kinetic isotope effects, $k_H/k_D$ < 1.

  • Nucleophilic addition reactions of benzylamines (BA; $XC_6H_4CH_2NH_2$) to ethyl-${\alpha}$-cyanocinnamates (ECC;$YC_6H_4CH$=C(CN)COOEt) have been investigated in acetonitrile at $30.0^{\circ}C$. The rate is first order with respect to BA and ECC. The rate is slower than that expected from the additive effect of ${\sigma}^-$ or $R^-$ for the activating groups (CN and COOEt). Natural. bond orbital ${\pi}^{\ast}_{c=c}$ calculations show that the contribution of COOEt group may not be fully effective despite the coplanar molecular structure. The selectivity parameters including the cross-interaction constant (${\rho}_{xy}$ = -0.22) indicate that the addition occurs in a single step. The kinetic isotope effects ($k_H/k_D$=2.5-2.8) involving deuterated BA ($XC_6H_4CH_2ND_2$) nucleophiles and activation parameters (${\Delta}H^{\neq}=4{\sim}6\;kcal\;mol^{-1};{\Delta}S^{\neq}=-45{\sim}-52\;e.u.$) suggest a cyclic transition state in which N-$C_{\alpha}$ and H-$C_{\beta}$ bonds are formed concurrently.
