  • As the steel plates used for automobile safety the TRIP-assisted multiphase steels are being introduced to automobile industry with respect to their remarkable mechanical properties for the combination of high strength and large elongation. This multiphase structure is generated by two stage heat treatment (intercritical annealing & isothermal treatment) The metastable retained austenite can be transformed to martensite when plastically deformed which results in TRIP effect. Actually the microstructure of TRIP-assisted steels consist of a fine dispersite. There present discussion deals with bainite reaction kinetics of austenite in the process o f two stage heat treatment. In relation to bainite transformation the characteristics of bainite reaction is found to be influenced by the bainite tempering temperature and also by the relative rate in which carbides precipitate within residual austenite.

  • The present study tackles the metallurgical subjects involving the thin slab-direct hot rolling process, i.e. mini-mill process. In order to clarify the effect of chemical composition of steel and MnS precipitation behaviors on the development of edge cracking during hot rolling, the content of manganese and sulfur in low carbon steel was varied and the isothermal treatment prior to roughing was applied. Edge cracking during roughing in the hot-rolling process of mini-mill was effectively prevented by means of the isothermal treatment at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes in the 0.4% manganese steel containing sulfur lower than 0.013%. With the increase in manganese content in low carbon steel, coarser MnS developed. The edge cracking index which denotes the total length of edge crack per unit edge-length of rolled specimens was proposed in this paper. It was found that the edge cracking index linearly decreased with the increase in the ratio of MnS.

  • The nitridation kinetics of titanium powder were studied by isothermal and non-isothermal (dynamic) methods in high purity nitrogen under I atm pressure. For the comparison with nitridation, the oxidation kinetics of titanium powder were also studied in dry oxygen at I atm pressure. An automatic recording electrobalance was used to measure the weight gain as a function of time and temperature. For the reaction with nitrogen, the nitride was formed at over $700^{\circ}C$. The reaction with nitrogen followed the parabolic rate law, and the activation energy was calculated to be 31 kcal/mol in the isothermal method (above $900^{\circ}C$). The non-stoichiometric TiNx has been synthesized by the nitridation at a proper temperature and time, followed by the homogenizing treatment above $1100^{\circ}C$. In comparison with the stoichiometric $TiN_{1.0}$ and the non-stoichiometric TiNx ($TiN_{0.5}$ and $TiN_{0.65}$), the hot oxidation characteristics of the former is superior to that of the latter. However, both non-stoichiometric nitrides make little difference in the hot oxidation characteristics.

  • The effects of temperature heating-up rate and pressure building-up phase on the inactivation of Listeria innocua ATCC 33090 were evaluated in buffered peptone water. The number of L. innocua was reduced by 5.57 and 6.52 log CFU/mL during the nonisothermal treatment (the come-up time followed by isothermal process) and the isothermal treatment, respectively, at $60^{\circ}C$. When compared to the isothermal treatment (0.76$33.2^{\circ}C/min$ of temperature heating-rate. The effect of the combined high pressure and thermal processing on the inactivation of L. innocua increased with increasing pressure and temperature. At all temperature levels from 40 to $60^{\circ}C$ under 700 MPa, L. innocua was not detected by enrichment culture (>7 log reduction).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate comparatively the microstructural characteristics and hardness of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) in Mg-9%Al alloy, which were formed by continuous cooling (CC) from 678 K to RT and isothermal aging (IA) at 413 K, respectively. In as-cast state, the Mg-9%Al alloy consisted of partially divorced eutectic β(Mg17Al12) particles with a small amount of DPs showing (α+β) lamellar morphology adjacent to the β particles. The DPs formed by CC had interlamellar spacings in a broad range of 0.85~2.12 ㎛ (1.51 ㎛ in average) owing to the various formation temperatures in response to continuous cooling process. Meanwhile, the DPs formed by IA had relatively narrower interlamellar spacings of 0.14~0.29 ㎛ (0.21 ㎛ in average), which is associated with the low and constant formation temperature. Thinner and higher volume fraction of β phase layers were noticeable in the DPs formed by IA. Higher hardness values were obtained in the DPs formed by IA than the DPs formed by CC, which may well be ascribed to the finer lamellar structure and higher β phase content of the DPs formed by IA.

  • This study was intended to investigate the influence of Al content on hardness and microstructural characteristics of discontinuous precipitates (DPs) formed by isothermal aging in Mg-8.7%Al and Mg-10%Al alloys. In order to obtain large amount of DPs in the microstructure, the alloy specimens were solution-treated at 688K for 24 h followed by water quenching, and then aged at 418K for 48h. The Mg-Al alloy with higher Al content was characterized by higher volume fraction of DPs at the same aging condition, lower interlamellar spacing of the DPs, thinner β phase layer and higher β phase content in the DPs. This is closely related to the higher velocity of discontinuous precipitation process resulting from the higher Al supersaturation in the α-(Mg) matrix. The Mg-10%Al alloy showed higher hardness of the DPs and greater difference in hardness between as-cast state and DPs than the Mg-8.7%Al alloy.

  • The changes of lamellar(${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) structure of TiAl intermetallic compound which is a high potential, high temperature aerospace material was investigated by heat treatment. The lamellar structure was short and made subgrain in prior a grains after homogenizing at 1523 K. It became longer and finer, and the subgrain went out during subsequent isothermal heatteating at 1273 K. The yield, fracture strength and strain to fracture if the heat treated specimens was increased and the hardness of them was decreased a little in the finer lamellar structure, because fine lamellar interface, sugrain boundary and grain boundary may block initiation and propagation of crack.

  • Ductile cast iron(DCI) with a multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures was produced by various special heat treatment. Intercritical heat treatment(I. C.), intermediate heat treatment(I. M.) and step quenching(S. Q.) were used to strengthen and toughen the fracture initiation sites such as graphite-marix interfaces and eutectic cell boundaries in DCI. The purpose of this study was to investigate of DCI by the special heat treatment. (I. C., I. M., and S. Q.) At a result, bainite nucleation rate at higher temperature was higher than that of at lower temperature, and shapes of bainite and martensite became bar /spheroidal type with increase of isothermal transformation time.

  • Heat treatment conditions and the formation of microstructures were studied for improving the transformation-induced plasticity(TRIP) effect of retained austenite and mechanical properties of Fe-0.2%C-1.5%Si-1.5%Mn sheet steel. An excellent combination of elongation about 30% and high strength over 760MPa was achieved by processing of intercritical annealing and isothermal holding Intercritical annealing the sheet steel produced fine particles($1{\sim}2{\mu}m$) of retained austenite which were stabilized due to C enrichment by subsequent holding in bainite transformation range. Heat treatment conditions were depended on the shape and distribution of second phases as well as the volume fraction and stability of retained austenrte. In this work, the heat treatment condition of optimal strength-elongation balance was obtained by holding the steel at $400^{\circ}C$ for 200sec, after intercritical annealing at $790^{\circ}C$ for 300sec.

  • Microstructural development of ferritic 11Cr-3.45W heat-resistance steel for ultra-supercritical power plant during creep and thermal aging was investigated using electron microscopy. The test samples were isothermally aged at $700^{\circ}C$ for up to 4000 hours and subjected to creep loading at $700^{\circ}C$ for predetermined periods of lifetime to prepare the damaged materials. In this structural material, a various secondary phases are the primary influence on mechanical properties of ferritic heat-resistance steel. The typical precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$, MX and $M_2X$ secondary phases had been analyzed through qualitative and quantitative manner. Coarsening of precipitates and increase of lath width were observed during creep and thermal aging. This phenomenon was remarkable for creep process compared with isothermal aging process.
