Purpose: This study aims to examine the effects of pulsed ultrasound on skin inflammatory reaction induced by ultraviolet irradiation. Methods: Twenty subjects were selected for this study. Inflammatory reaction was induced by ultraviolet irradiation in two areas of the lumbar region of the subjects. Pulsed ultrasound (3 MHz) was applied to one of the two areas of inflammatory reaction at a pulse ratio of 1:4, intensity of $0.5W/cm^2$, once a day for 5 min, and pulsed ultrasound was not applied to the other area. Wound color (chromatic red), luminance (gray) and wound contraction (area) were measured using digital imaging processing method. Results: There was a significant difference in wound color (chromatic red) in the interaction between time and area. There was a significant difference in luminance in the interaction between time and area. There was a significant difference in wound contraction between the two areas. Conclusion: These results indicate that pulsed ultrasound increased the wound contraction rate and reduced the inflammatory reaction activity such as erythema induced by ultraviolet irradiation.
The PVA hydrogels were prepared by the chemical and irradiation method to improve the heat resistance of these hydrogels at the high temperature. The physical properties such as the gel content, the degree of swelling and the gel strength for the synthesized hydrogels were examined. Gel content increased as the chemical reaction time and the irradiation dose increased, and gel content of the hydrogels were higher when the two-steps of chemical and irradiation method were used rather than only the chemical method. Gel strength increased as the chemical reaction time increased, and as the irradiation dose decreased. The hydrogels prepared by the chemical reaction for 5 hours and the two-steps had the heat resistance at the high temperature.

A new Monte-Carlo-based computer program (RDS-BASIC) is developed to simulate the transport of energetic ions in pure matter. This computer program is utilizing an algorithm that uses detailed numerical solutions for the classical scattering integral for evaluating the outcomes of the binary collision processes. This approach is adopted by several prominent similar simulation programs and is known to provide results with higher accuracy compared to other approaches that use approximations to shorten the simulation time. Furthermore, RDS-BASIC simulation program contains special methods to reduce the displacement energy threshold of surface atoms. This implementation is found essential for accurate simulation results for sputtering yield in the case of very low energy ions irradiation (near sputtering energy threshold) and also successfully solve the problem of simultaneously obtaining an acceptable number of atomic displacements per incident ions. Results of our simulation for several irradiation systems are presented and compared with their respective TRIM (SRIM-2013) and the state-of-the-art SDTrimSP simulation results. Our sputtering simulation results were also compared with available experimental data. The simulation execution time for these different simulation programs has also been compared.
High energy neutron irradiations impact on structural and electrical properties of alumina are studied with particular emphasis on real time in-situ radiation induced conductivity measurement in low flux region. Polycrystalline Al2O3 samples are subjected to high energy neutrons produced from D-T neutron generator and Am-Be neutron source. 14 MeV neutrons from D-T generator are chosen to study the role of fast neutron irradiation in the structural modification of samples. Real time in-situ electrical measurement is performed to investigate the change in insulation resistance of Al2O3 due to radiation induced conductivity at low flux regime. During neutron irradiation, a significant transient decrease in insulation resistance is observed which recovers relative higher value just after neutron exposure is switched off. XRD results of 14 MeV neutron irradiated samples suggest annealing effect. Impact of relatively low energy neutrons on the structural properties is also studied using Am-Be neutrons. In this case, clustering is observed on the sample surface after prolonged neutron exposure. The structural characterizations of pristine and irradiated Al2O3 samples are performed using XRD, SEM, and EDX. The results from these characterizations are analysed and interpreted in the manuscript.
Two methodologies for predicting thermal relaxation time of tissue subjected to pulsed laser irradiation is introduced by the calculation the optical penetration depth and by the investigation of the temperature diffusion behavior. First approach is that both x-axial and y-axial thermal relaxation times are predicted and they are superposed to achieve the thermal relaxation time (${\tau}_1$) for two-dimensional square tissue model. Another approach to achieve thermal relaxation time (${\tau}_2$) is measuring the time required for local temperature drop until $e^{-1}$ of the maximum laser induced heating.
Effects of gamma irradiation on microbiological changes of Gorosoe sap were characterized during a post-irradiation storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The aseptically collected sap was irradiated and stored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 0 to 60 days and analysed for standard plate counts and 16S rDNA. There were significant differences in the total number of colony forming units(CFUs) of bacteria between irradiated and non-irradiated control sap. Bacteria of non-irradiated sap were present at levels of $1.5{\times}10^4{\sim}2.3{\times}10^8\;CFU/m{\ell}$, whereas no viable microbial cells were detected in sap after 10 kGy of irradiation during storage. According to the 16S rDNA sequence analysis, bacterial community structures decrease with time and the most abundant strain was Pseudomonas species. Our results suggested that gamma irradiation can be used to enhance the shelf-life of Gorosoe sap.

Effects of extraction conditions, gamma-irradiation and storage conditions on bioactivities of Citrus (Citrus unshiu) peel extract were investigated. The Hunter color $L^{*}$- and $a^{*}$-values of the extract increased but $b^{*}$-value decreased with an increase in absorbed irradiation dose. DPPH radical scavenging, tyrosinase inhibition and nitrite scavenging activities were not affected by irradiation but reduced by increased storage time. Nitrite scavenging activity of the extract was the highest at pH 1.2 followed by pH 4.2 and 6.0 and not changed by storage. Results indicated that there is potential for using citrus peel byproducts as a bioactive ingredient, and that gamma irradiation brightens the color of the extract without adversely altering its biological activity.ity.
Lasers are necessity in our life related to the fields of medicine and cosmetic surgery. With 808 nm diode laser and $CO_2$ laser, we made some wounds on a dorsum of rat by laser irradiation. All of irradiations shows thermal effects on the whole region of skin tissues. They make wound damage depending on laser power and irradiation time. Because a collagen is plays an important role in tissue repair, we studied collagen accumulation in wound tissue. For wound healing, collagen accumulation was found in the near region of damage in epidermis and dermis layer of the rat skin. In case of the quantitative analysis of collagen in wound tissue, the amount of collagen in wound tissue by $CO_2$ laser irradiation is higher than that of 808 nm diode laser irradiation. And re-epithelialization was significantly faster in wound by $CO_2$ laser irradiation compared with that of 808 nm diode laser irradiation.
Comparative effects of electron beam and gamma-ray irradiation (25 ∼15 kGy) were investigated on saponin stability and some physiological and chemical properties of white and red ginseng powders. Saponin components were found stable upon irradiation of both energies when determined by TLC and HPLC, after 4 months of storage at room temperature as well as immediately after treatment The contents of total phenolics and acidic polysaccharides of the samples were higher in red ginseng than in white. Polysaccharide contents increased with irradiation doses. Amylase activity of white ginseng was stimulated by irradiation but decreased with the lapse of storage time. There were no apparent differences in electrophoresis patterns of extracted proteins depending on irradiation doses and energy sources.
This work is concerned with a statistical approach to the life prediction on irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) of stainless steel (SS) for core internals of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The previous results of the time-to-failure of IASCC measured on neutron-irradiated stainless steel components were statistically analyzed in terms of stress and irradiation. The accelerating life testing model of IASCC of cold worked Type 316 SS was established based on an inverse power model with two stress-variables, the applied stress and irradiation dose. Considering the variation of the yield strength and applied stress with the irradiation dose in the model, the remaining life of the baffle former bolt was statistically predicted during operation under complex environments of stress and irradiation.
