To evaluate the influence of prior heat treatment on the thermal enhancement of irradiation effect after hyperthermia, an experimental study was carried out using a total of 80 mice. Hyperthermia was carried out at $43^{\circ}C$ for 40 minutes and was repeated with various intervals. A single dose of 3,000 rad was delivered on skin of mouse tail immediately after the second hyperthermia. The skin changes of the irradiated mouse tail were observed from 7th to 35th post-irradiation days, and the skin scores were analyzed. The results are as follows, 1. The radiation damage on mouse skin increased significantly when radiation was combined with hyperthermia. 2. The radiation damage after repeated hyperthermia is significantly less than that after single hyperthermia, when the interval is 1 to 6 days. 3. As a result, thermal tolerance persists from 1 through 6 days after the initial hyperthermia.
Background: The incidence of brain metastases (BM) varies in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), calls into question the value of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI). It is possible that clinicopathologic characteristics are associated with the development of BM, but these have yet to be identified in detail. Thus, we conducted the present meta-analysis on risk factors for BM and the value of PCI in patients with NSCLC. Methods: Eligible data were extracted and the risk factors for BM and the value of PCI in patients with NSCLC were analyzed by calculating the pooled odds ratio (OR). Heterogeneity was detected using Q and I-squared statistics, and publication bias was tested by funnel plots and Egger's test. Results: Six randomized controlled trials with a focus on the value of PCI and 13 eligible studies with a focus on risk factors for BM were included. PCI significantly reduced the incidence of BM in patients with NSCLC (p=0.000, pooled OR=0.34, 95% confidence interval = 0.37-0.59). Compared with non-squamous cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma was associated with a low incidence of BM in patients with NSCLC (p=0.000, pooled OR=0.47, 95% confidence interval =0.34-0.65). The funnel plot and Egger's test suggested that there was no publication bias in the current meta-analysis. Conclusions: This meta-analysis provides statistical evidence that compared with non-squamous cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma can be used as a predictor for BM in patients with NSCLC, and PCI might reduce the incidence of BM in patients with NSCLC, but does not provide a survival benefit.
The objective of this study is to develop the blind control strategy and method which reduce negative effect of incoming daylight on visual comfort of occupants, minimize psychological anxieties caused by frequent motions of a blind, and maximize positive effect of incoming daylight by opening/closing of a blind. In previous researches on blind controls, major problem is that the time interval and amount of blind movement do not meet the control objective at the inflected zone of solar profile curve. To overcome these limitations revealed in theprevious researches, following tasks were performed in this study. i)To establish the control objective to accomplish the goal of this study. ii)To develop the control methods and algorithms which prevent glare on the work-plane at any time and which control the time interval and amount of blind movement to follow the control objective at various solar profile angle curves. This study proposed the control strategy and method that define the base control section implying the inflection point within the control objective zone and subsequently, divide the control sections for the residual time zones. The proposed strategy and method are found to increase the incoming daylight and solar irradiation by 0 to 15 %.

Radiation sensitivity data was generated for two human cancer cell lines(KB, RPMI 2650) and human primary gingival fibroblast was tested three times using a viable cell number counting with a hemocytometer, MTT(3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay, and LDH(Lactate dehydrogenase) assay. Single irradiation of 2, 4, 6, 10, 15, 20Gy were applied to the tumor cell lines and the primary cultured gingival fibroblast The two fractions of 4Gy and 10Gy were seperated with a 4 hour time interval. The irradiation was done with 241.5cGy/min dose rate using /sup 137/Cs MK cell irradiator at room temperature. The obtained results were as followed : 1. There was significantly different viable cell numbers as the amount of radiation dose on the tested cells were cell number counted with a hemocytometer. In fractions, there were more viable cells remaining. 2. Phase-contrast microscopically, radiation-induced morphologic changes were pronounced on the tumor cells, however, almost no differences on the gingival fibroblast. 3. There was significantly different absorbance at 2Gy on RPMI 2600, 4Gy on KB and GF in MTT assay. In fractions, the absorbance was significantly higher on KB. 4. The level of extracellular LDH activity in the experimental group was significantly higher in the 2-4Gy than the control group. 5. The total level of extracellular and intracellular LDH activity was decreased as increased amounts of radiation dose was applied.

Introduction : Perioperative irradiation is often combined with spine tumor surgery. Radiation is known to be detrimental to healing process of bone fusion. We tried to investigate bone fusion rate in spine tumor surgery cases with perioperative radiation therapy (RT) and to analyze significant factors affecting successful bone fusion. Methods : Study cohort was 33 patients who underwent spinal tumor resection and bone graft surgery combined with perioperative RT. Their medical records and radiological data were analyzed retrospectively. The analyzed factors were surgical approach, location of bone graft (anterior vs. posterior), kind of graft (autologous graft vs. allograft), timing of RT (preoperative vs. postoperative), interval of RT from operation in cases of postoperative RT (within 1 month vs. after 1 month) radiation dose (above 38 Gy vs. below 38 Gy) and type of radiation therapy (conventional RT vs. stereotactic radiosurgery). The bone fusion was determined on computed tomography images. Result : Bone fusion was identified in 19 cases (57%). The only significant factors to affect bony fusion was the kind of graft (75% in autograft vs. 41 in allograft, p=0.049). Other factors proved to be insignificant relating to postoperative bone fusion. Regarding time interval of RT and operation in cases of postoperative RT, the time interval was not significant (p=0.101). Conclusion : Spinal fusion surgery which was combined with perioperative RT showed relatively low bone fusion rate (57%). For successful bone fusion, the selection of bone graft was the most important.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the comfort of PET clothing treated by UV. The physiological responses of the human body were investigated. Mean skin temperature and physiological signals such as Electroencephalogram (EEG), and heart rate (Electrocardiogram, (ECG)) were examined for 20 minutes during stable wearing conditions. Mean skin temperature was measured every two seconds using Ramanathan's method. Physiological responses were measured using Biopac MP100 series and analyzed using the software, Acqknowledge 3.5.2. Psychological effects were analyzed every five minutes. Comfort of untreated PET clothing decreased with the passage of time. Compared with PET clothing untreated, treated for 30 minutes, and treated for 90 minutes, the analysis of EEG showed that PET clothing treated for 90 minutes was the most comfortable after 20 minutes. In addition, the interval of the heart rate shown on the ECG was the highest in PET clothing treated for 90 minutes. Skin temperature was the lowest in PET treated for 90 minutes. We thus conclude that suitable UV irradiation would improve comfort.
One hundred and twenty patients with brain metastases were seen and evaluated in the Dept. of Therapeutic Radiology, Seoul National University Hospital between 1979 and 1983. Of these, 90 Patients received whole brain irradiation with 2,000 ra4 in 1 week or 3,000 rad in 2 weeks for Palliative Purpose and 30 patients failed to complete the planned treatment. Carcinoma of the lung(44 cases), choriocarcinoma(11 cases), breast(8 cases) were common Primary tumors of 90 patients receiving planned treatment. Symptomatic subjective response was obtained in $92\%$ of Patients and meurologic functional improvement was obtained in $42\%$ of patients. Median survival was 6.4 months in patients with complete treatment an·d less than 2 months in Patients with incomplete treatment, overall survival rate at 1 year and 2 year were $26\%,\;16\%$ in Patients with complete treatment and $8\%,\;0\%$ in patients with incomplete treatment. Primary site, extent of metastases and interval from diagnosis of primary tumor to brain metastases were identified as prognostic factors.
This study was performed to investigate the biostimulation effects of low level laser therapy (LLLT) on the fungus, Candida albicans, during the short term of cell cycle. Samples were divided into 6 groups which were P7, P9, P11, P15< CW and CO. All samples were irradiated for 1 minute with 2 hours of elapsed time during about 27 hours of the cell cycle of Candida albicans, and the optical density was assessed by spectrophotometry every 2 hours. It was found that there was no difference between the control and any other groups irradiated with 2 hours of short interval.

It is difficult to establish accurate modeling of PV power system because of various uncertainty. However, it is important work to modeling of PV for fault diagnosis. This paper proposes modeling and fault diagnosis method using correlation analysis and ELM(Extreme Learning Machine). Rather than using total data, we select optimal time interval with higher corelation between PV power and solar irradiation. Also, we use average value during 60 minute to avoid rapid variation of PV power. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we performed various experiments by dataset.

The verification of irradiation treatments, using dried garlic and cabbage treated at 0-20 kGy, was investigated by analyzing the photostimulated luminescence (PSL), electron spin resonance (ESR) and thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of the samples. The PSL results showed that the photon counts/60 sec of the non-irradiated dried garlic and cabbage were 287-337, corresponding to negative, while those of the irradiated samples were 7511-54063 photon counts/ 60 sec, corresponding to positive, making it possible to discriminate the non-irradiated from the irradiated samples. In ESR analysis, the dried garlic irradiated at 20 kGy exhibited cellulose radicals, whereas the irradiated dried cabbage showed crystalline sugar-induced multi-component signals, which were not found in the non-irradiated samples. The ESR signal intensity significantly increased as the irradiation dose increase ($R^2$= 0.9369 - 0.9926). The TL glow curves of the irradiated samples appeared at a temperature interval of 150-250, which were significantly different from those of non-irradiated samples, showing a significant increase in TL signal intensity with irradiation dose ($R^2$= 0.9670 - 0.9768). To enhance the reliability of the results, the first glow curve ($TL_1$) was compared with the second glow curve ($TL_2$) obtained after a re-irradiation step at 1 kGy. The TL ratio ($TL_1/TL_2$) was in good agreement with the reported TL threshold values for both the non-irradiated (<0.1) and irradiated (> 0.1) samples.
