Composition changes of swine manure and the effects on MAP ($MgNH_4PO_46H_2O$) crystallization by microwave irradiation were examined. The concentration of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ was increased within a fixed period of time and then decreased, but $NH_4$-N was reduced continuously during microwave irradiation. Concentration of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ was started to reduce just from the point of foam formation during microwave irradiation, and the temperature at that time was always $49^{\circ}C$ irrespectively to microwave irradiation rate. Inorganic carbon was reduced with microwave irradiation, but soluble organic carbon (TOCs) was increased proportionally. Crystallization rate under conditions of non-microwave irradiation, irradiation up to $93^{\circ}C$ and $48^{\circ}C$ was 87.8%, 87.3% and 98.5%, respectively, showing 10% enhancement when irradiated up to $48^{\circ}C$. However, removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen was proportional to the microwave irradiation rate or duration, obtaining 2.5%, 4.5% and 10.2%, respectively. Based on these results, it would be a useful strategy to irradiate microwave up to $49^{\circ}C$ to enhance MAP crystallization rate by changing the ionic pattern of nutrients in the manure. Meanwhile, provision of enough microwave irradiation rate might be needed to achieve high $NH_4$-N removal.
We investigated the effects of the irradiation of light-ions on the superconducting $MgB_2$ thin films fabricated by using HPCVD. Deuterium and helium ions were irradiated on $MgB_2$ thin films by various doses, from $1{\times}10^{10}cm^{-2}\;to\;8{\times}10^{15}cm^{-2}$. During these experiments some reasonable results and unpredictable results have been obtained. The reasonable results are that the peak of the reduced maximum pinning force shifts by increasing the pinning sites in $MgB_2$ films and the slightly change of critical current density of films. We obtained some unusual results, which are the increasing of the transition temperature and the change of residual resistance ratio. Among the data of deuterium and helium ion irradiation experiments, the results of helium ion irradiation have most notable points so we will discuss mainly about helium irradiation experiments.
In this study, the series of ultrasonic irradiation for removal of refractory aromatic compounds has been selected as a model reaction in the batch reactor system in order to obtain the reaction kinetics. The products obtained from the ultrasonic irradiation were analysed by GC and GC/MSD. The decomposition of benzene produced toluene, phenol, and C1-C4 compounds, while the intermediates during the ultrasonic irradiation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol(DCP) were phenol, HCl, catechol, hydroquinone, and benzoquinone. It was found that more than 80% of benzene, and 2,4-DCP solutions were removed within 2 hours in all reaction conditions. The reaction order in the degradation of these three compounds was verified as pseudo-zero or first order. From the fore-mentioned results, it can be concluded that the refractory organic compounds could be removed by the ultrasonic irradiation with radicals, such as $H{\cdot}$ and $OH{\cdot}$ radical causing the high increase of pressure and temperature. Finally, it appeared that the technology using ultrasonic irradiation can be applied to the treatment of refractory compounds which are difficult to be decomposed by the conventional methods.
Laser cartilage reshaping(LCR) is a promising method for reshaping cartilage by using laser irradiation to maintain permanently modifies its shape. However this method has not been fully understood due to the limited scientific researches. The purpose of this study is to analyze optical and thermal characteristics of cartilage during laser irradiation. After analyzing Monte Carlo simulation for the comparison of laser fluence distributions with different laser wavelengths the characterization of the spectral changes during Nd:YAG laser(${\lambda}$ = 1444 nm) irradiation was investigated in the ranges of 900-1700 nm with double integrating spheres. The surface temperature distribution changes during laser irradiation were investigated with an infrared camera. The quantitative measurements of optical and thermal characteristics in cartilage after laser irradiation were correlated with the transition of water flux(from bound to free water) and this study may be useful for better understanding of biophysical transformation phenomena in cartilage after laser heating.
Poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) is one of the most widely used materials in textile industry. It can have a low cost, silk-like handle, and excellent mechanical properties. Low thermal stability of PET had been a common problem limiting its high temperature application. The polyester have been known to have the disadvantage of degradation under ionized irradiation compared to crosslikable polymers such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystylene. To improve thermal stability of PET, the PET films were photocrosslinked by UV irradiation. A hydrogen-abstractable photoinitiator was used to photocrosslink of PET by continuous UV irradiation. Photoinitiator addition increased the gel fraction. The photocrosslinking was attributed to the recombination of PET radicals generated upon UV irradiation, which was enhanced by the hydrogen abstraction of the PET polymer chains by the added photoinitiator. Also the crosslinked PET showed higher thermal stability and mechanical strength with increasing UV energy. Polyester type films such as poly(ethylene naphthalate)(PEN) and poly(butylene terephthalte)(PBT) were also increased the gel fraction and improved thermal stability and mechanical properties by UV irradiation.
The effect of electron beam (EB) irradiation on superconducting properties and microstructures of MgB2 bulk superconductors were investigated. At E-beam doses of 1×1016 e/cm2 and 1×1017 e/cm2, the effect of irradiation on a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of MgB2 was weak. As a dose increases to 5×1017 e/cm2, Tc decreases by 0.5 K. The critical current density (Jc) measured at 4.2 K and 20 K, and 0 T - 5 T increases slightly as exposure time increases. X-ray diffraction for the irradiation surface of MgB2 shows that the diffraction intensity of (hkl) peaks decreases proportionally as the exposure time increases. This indicates that the crystallinity of MgB2 was degraded by irradiation. TEM investigation for the irradiated sample showed distorted lattice structure, which is consistent with the XRD results. The Jc increase and Tc reduction of MgB2 by irradiation are believed to be caused by the lattice distortion.

Austenitic stainless steel welds (ASSWs) of nuclear components undergo aging-related degradations caused by high temperature and neutron radiation. Since irradiation leads to the change of material characteristics, relevant quantification is important for long-term operation, but limitations exist. Although ion irradiation is utilized to emulate neutron irradiation, its penetration depth is too shallow to measure bulk properties. In this study, a systematic approach was suggested to estimate mechanical properties of ion irradiated 308 ASSW. First of all, weld specimens were irradiated by 2 MeV proton to 1 and 10 dpa. Microstructure evolutions due to irradiation in δ-ferrite and austenite phases were characterized and micropillar compression tests were performed. In succession, dislocation density based stress-strain (S-S) relationships and quantification models of irradiation defects were adopted to define phases in finite element analyses. Resultant microscopic S-S curves were compared to verify material parameters. Finally, macroscopic behaviors were calculated by multiscale simulations using real microstructure based representative volume element (RVE). Validity of the approach was verified for the unirradiated specimens such that the estimated S-S curves and 0.2% offset yield strengths (YSs) which was 363.14 MPa were in 10% agreement with test. For irradiated specimens, the estimated YS were 917.41 MPa in 9% agreement.
To see the possibility of irradiation as an alternative to ultra high temperature (UHT) sterilization, the quality characteristics of milk were analyzed. Milk treated by UHT ($135^{\circ}C$ for 4 sec) and irradiation at higher than 3 kGy showed no viable counts after 7 days of storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The contents of certain amino acids of milk, such as Arg, Asp, Glu, Ile, Leu, Lys, Pro, Ser, Thr, and Tyr, were lower in irradiated groups at 10 kGy than in UHT-treated one, but no difference was observed between irradiated milks at less than 5 kGy and UHT. The capillary electrophoresis (CE) patterns of the milk irradiated at 10 kGy showed a similar trend to the raw milk, low temperature long time (LTLT, $63^{\circ}C$ for 30 min), and high temperature short time (HTST, $72^{\circ}C$ for 15 sec) treated. However, the CE pattern of UHT-treated milk was different. Rennet coagulation test agreed with the CE results, showing that all milk samples were coagulated by rennet addition except for UHT-treated milk after 1 hr. These results suggest that irradiation of milk reduce the content of individual amino acids but it may not induce severe conformational change at a protein level when compared with UHT treatment.
In order to investigate the antibacterial effects of pulsed Nd:YAG Laser concerning to Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus mutans was cultured and standardized and plated in 96 well plates. After that, black dye and chlorhexidine were applied and pulsed Nd:YAG Laser was irradiated to plates. Experimental groups which was applied with black dye and chlorhexidine were divided into 5 groups by concentration. And experimental groups and control group were subdivided as unlased and lased of 20, 40, and 60J. After laser irradiation, All groups were plated in agar plates and incubated for 18 hours. Bacterial colonies were counted and analysed comparitively, and the temperature of culture medium was measured on every laser irradiation. The results were obtained as follows; 1. In case of laser irradiation only, there is no significant reduction in number of Streptococcus mutans by irradiated energy of laser. 2. In case of black dye application, there is no difference by concentration of black dye but there is decrease when applied Laser and black dye simultaneously. 3. When applied chlorhexidine, the number of Streptococcus mutans was decreased according to increase of concentration, but there is no difference by irradiated energy of laser. 4. The temperature of culture medium was increased according to increase of irradiated energy of Laser, and the number of Streptococcus mutans was reduced remarkably just above 50 centigrade and killed above 70 centigrade. As above results, pulsed Nd:YAG Laser has well-absorbing affinity to black dye. And antibacterial effect of pulsed Nd:YAG Laser against Streptococcus mutans is seemed to be due to increase of temperature.
