Dust particles, which inflow to the subway mechanical ventilation and air conditioning(MVAC) chamber, contain a fair amount of iron compounds, approximately 25.2w/w%. This work attempted to capture those iron containing dust using magnetic filters. Average magnetization value of the test MVAC dust was 0.012 emu on 5,000 Oe, which could correspond sufficiently with the magnetic interaction. External permanent magnets provided with magnetization of iron mesh screen showing high gradient magnetic field(HGM). It resulted in the capture efficiency with 84.0 ~ 99.7% and 81.2 ~ 99.8% for $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ respectively. Magnetic capture was found to be closely associated with the magnetic intensity, mesh opening size and flow velocity.

Seasonal changes have been recognized in particle characteristics and forming characteristics of iron powder with insulated coating for a compacted magnetic core because of its high hygroscopicity, due to its phosphate coating and resin binder additives. For this reason, particle characteristics and molding characteristics of the powder with diverse water absorbtivity have been studied. The result shows that the higher the volume of absorbed water, the worse the fluidity becomes, resulting in the reduction in both springback during the molding process and expansion reduction after the heat treatment. The requirement on dimension accuracy for the finished product can be satisfied with an additional drying process on the material powder, which contributes to maintain its water volume constant.

Low-Z particle Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis was applied to characterize MSW fly- and bottom -ash particle samples originated from two municipal incinerators (denoted as A and B) in Korea. According to their chemical composition, many distinctive particle types were identified. In A fly ash, the major chemical species are carbon-rich, aluminosilicates and many particles are composed of as a mixture of $ CaCO_3$ and other chemical species such as $CaSO_4$ or $CaCl_2$. For B fly ash, Fe, iron oxide, NaCl and NaCl-containing particles are the most abundant. In bottom ash, A and B were composed of similar chemical species such as carbon-rich, Fe, iron oxide, $CaCO_3$, and aluminosilicates. It was demonstrated that the single-particle characterization using this low-Z particle EPMA technique provided detailed information on various types of chemical species in the MSW ash samples. In addition, the technique has advantage over conventional analytical techniques in the point that both crystalline and glass-like ash particles can be analyzed at the same time.

There is no significant difference in the initial viscosity of a propellant applied with yellow iron oxide and red iron oxide. In addition, the thermal decomposition rate of the material with added yellow iron oxide is faster than that with the addition of red iron oxide. Specifically, it was confirmed that the pressure exponent was 18% lower at high temperature and high pressure with yellow iron oxide than with red iron oxide. The initial viscosity was lowest at 71% of the large particle to small particle ratio.
The optimum conditions were studied for the preparation of transparent iron oxide with the air oxidation of FeOOH. The FeOOH obtained by mixing NaOH and FeSO$_4$ solution in various conditions such as R(=2NaOH/FeSO$_4$), FeSO$_4$ concentration. reaction temperature and air flow rate. When the FeSO$_4$ increased gradually, the concentration of iron ion in the solution became high. So, particle size increased precipitating Fe$_3O_4$. Goethite dehydrate at about 200$^{\circ}C$ and ended the reaction at about 320$^{\circ}C$ forming hematite. The lower the reaction temperature was, the shorter the particle length of goethite and particle size decreased. When the flow rate of air as an oxidant increased, the amount of dissolved oxygen in the solution increased, which made oxidation rate increased. And then particle size of goethite decreased.
A polishing method using magnetorheological (MR) fluid has been developed as a new precision technique to obtain a fine surface. The process uses a MR fluid that consists of magnetic carbonyl iron (CI) particles, nonmagnetic polishing abrasives, water and stabilizers. But the CI particles in MR fluids cause a severe corrosion problem. When coated with Xanthan gum, the CI particles showed long-term stability in corrosive aqueous environment. The surface roughness obtained from the MR polishing process was evaluated. A series of experiments were performed on fused silica glass using prepared slurries and various process conditions, including different polishing times. Outstanding surface roughness of Ra=2.27nm was obtained on the fused silica glass. The present polishing method could be used to produce ultra-precision micro parts.
A three-dimensional electrochemical process using nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI)/activated carbon (AC) particle electrode and persulfate (PS) was developed for oxidizing pollutants. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis were performed to characterize particle electrode. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis confirmed that NZVI was impregnated on the surface of AC. Compared with the conventional two-dimensional electrochemical process, the three-dimensional particle electrode process achieved three times higher efficiency in phenol removal. The system with current density of $5mA/cm^2$ exhibited the highest phenol removal efficiency among the systems employing 1, 5, and $10mA/cm^2$. The removal efficiency of phenol increased as the Fe contents in the particle electrode increased. The particle electrode achieved more than 70% of phenol removal until it was reused for three times. The sulfate radical played a predominant role in phenol removal according to the radical scavenging test.
Various solid particle materials are treated in the industrial processes including fixed-beds or moving grate beds, and modeling approaches have been widely applied to the processes to predict and evaluate their performance. For this study, the modeling approach was applied to iron ore sintering process with various improvement measures. Based on the previous modeling approach, the changes and effects of the improvement measures were discussed at the point of controlling the combustion environment in the bed.
Ac susceptibility of iron-nitride magnetic fluids with various particle number densities was measured. Therelaxation time increases rapidly as the temperature decreases or the inter-particle interaction increases. The analysis of the data suggests that the activation energy is proportional to ${(k_{B}T/J_{typ})}^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha$~-0.24 in the lower temperature range in which the thermal energy is comparable to the magnetic dipole interaction.
Recycling process of iron should be developed for efficient recovery of neodymium (Nd), rare metal, from acid-leaching solution of Nd magnet. In this study, $FeCl_3$ solution as iron source was used for preparation of iron nano particles with the condition of various factors, such as, reductant, and surfactant. $Na_4P_2O_7$ and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as surfactants, $NaBH_4$ as reductant, and palladium chloride ($PdCl_2$) as a nucleation seed were used. Iron powder was analyzed by using XRD, SEM for measuring shape and size. Iron nano particles were prepared at the ratio of 1:5 (Fe (III) : $NaBH_4$). Size and shape of iron particles were round-form and 50 ~ 100 nm size. Zeta-potential of iron at the 100 mg/L of $Na_4P_2O_7$ was negative value, which was good for dispersion of metal particle. When $Na_4P_2O_7$ (100 mg/L), PVP($FeCl_3:PVP$ = 1 : 4, w/w) and Pd($FeCl_3:PdCl_2$ = 1 : 0.001, w/w) were used, iron nano particles which were round-shape, well-dispersed and near 100 nm-sized range. In this condition, $FeCl_3$ solution changed with spent Nd leachate solution, and then it is possible to be made round-formed iron nano particles at pH 9 and at the reaction bath over 20 L which is not include any surfactant.
