Pulverized coal (PC) has become an important auxiliary fuel in the iron and steel industry since the technique of pulverized coal injection (PCI) system was developed for iron making. Combustion efficiencies of pulverized coal in blowpipes and tuyeres under various operational are numerically predicted to recognize the performance with the locations of nozzles in a blast furnace. A variety of parameters including the pulverized coal quantities, oxygen amounts, inlet temperature of the tuyeres and mass flow rate of coal carrier gas are taken into consideration. Also In order to develop more efficient than existing coal injection system, this study applies a flame measurement system using a charge couple device (CCD) camera and frame grabber. And it has used algorithms of auto sampling from flame shape information and composed the device for location control of PCI. This study find to further improve the blast furnace performance by the control of PCI locations.

Cast iron is widely used in fields such as the transport and heavy industries. For parts where contact damage is expected to occur, it is necessary to understand the friction and wear characteristics of cast iron. In this study, we use cast iron plates as the specimens to investigate their friction and wear characteristics. We perform various experiments using a reciprocating type tribotester. We assess the frictional characteristics by analyzing the friction coefficient values that were obtained during the sliding tests. We observe the wear surfaces of cast iron and steel balls using a scanning electron microscope, confocal microscope, and 3d profiler. We investigate the friction and wear characteristics of cast iron by injecting sand and alumina particles having various sizes. Furthermore, we estimate the effect of temperature on the friction and wear characteristics. The results obtained are expected to aid in the understanding of the tribological characteristics of cast iron in industry.
This study has assessed the industrial human toxicity index by means of toxic substances emissions in South Korean industry. The data used in analysis are the 146 kinds of the toxic chemicals emissions and final demands, total outputs in the input-output table. As a results, human carcinogenic index was $11.86198{\times}10^3$ for overall industries, and $0.26360{\times}10^3$ for average. The industries of higher human toxicity index can be ranked as follows: Mother vehicles and parts (7.85033) > Pig iron and crude steel(4.57409) > Primary iron and steel products(4.36668) > Other transportation equipments and parts(3.43293) > Inorganic basic chemical products(2.64379), etc. Such result can be considered as the priority order of regulation based on industrial characteristics, when the demand and industrial policies should be carried out for the deduction fof toxic substances.

Steam Reforming H2 Generation (SRH2G) System is a chemical process to produce hydrogen through steam reforming of hydrocarbon. Largely speaking, there are two types of materials for the SRH2G: 1) Oil and coal, and 2)Natural Gas such as shale gas. From the perspective of cost, quality (purity), and environmental burden (pollution), the latter is much more desirable than the former. For this reason, research on SRH2G using natural gas is actively carried out, and implemented and operated in the various industry. In this paper, we develop a natural gas based SRH2G system via systems engineering approach. Specifically, we first derived stakeholder requirements, followed by systems requirements and finally system architecture via a tailored SE process for plant (called Plant Systems Engineering (PSE) process) based on ISO/IEC 15288. The developed method was applied to iron and steel plant as a case study. Through the case study, by the SE approach, we were convinced that a successful system satisfying stakeholders' requirements within the given constraints can be developed, verified and validated.
Greenhouse gas emissions should be precisely forecast to reduce the emissions from industrial production processes. This study calculated the direct and indirect $CO_2$ emission intensities of 401 industries using the Input-Output tables 2003 and statistical data on the amount of energy use. This study had some limitations in drawing study findings because overseas data were used given the lack of domestic data. Other limiting factors included the oil distribution problems in the oil refinery sector, re-review of carbon neutral, and insufficient consideration of waste treatment. Nonetheless, this study is very meaningful since the direct and indirect $CO_2$ emission intensities of 401 industries were calculated. Specifically, this study considered from the zero-waste perspective the effects of waste, which attract interest worldwide since coke gas and gas from the steel industry are obtained as byproducts for the first time in Korea. According to the results of the analysis of $CO_2$ emission intensity per industry, typical industries whose indirect $CO_2$ emission intensity is high include crude steel making, Remicon, steel wire rods & track rail, cast iron, and iron reinforcing rods & bar steel. These industries produce products using the raw materials produced in the industrial sector whose $CO_2$ emission intensity is high. The representative industries whose direct $CO_2$ emission intensity is high include cement, pig iron, lime & plaster products, andcoal-based compounds. These industries extract raw ore from nature and refine them into raw materials that are useful in other industries. The findings in this study can be effectively used for the following case: estimation of target $CO_2$ emission reduction level reflecting each industrial sector's characteristics, calculation of potential emission reduction of each policy to reduce $CO_2$ emissions, identification of a firm's $CO_2$ emission level, and setting of the target level of emission reduction. Moreover, the findings in this study can be utilized widely in fields such as System of integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting(SEEA) and Material Flow Analysis(MFA) as the current topic of research in Korea.
Converter has been slag produced 10 million tons per year in Japan. It is a steel making by product produced in the same way as the blast-furnace slag. Though blast-furnace slag is being used effectively as a concrete admixture, the converter stag has never been used effectively because of the expansion action of contained free lime and iron oxide. This is an important environmental problem in the steel industry. Beta-2CaOSiO$_2$(beta-C$_2$S) is contained 40 percent in converter slag, therefore it is very promising as a concrete admixture. We proposed an accelerated aging processes capable of stabilizing the converter slag in a short time. The converter slag is dipped into alkali aqueous solution after heating at low temperature. It was subsequently ground to a grain size of 75 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ , inner 30 percent of OPC. The properties of mortar and concrete using the blended cement were determined. As a result, it has become apparent that the expansion was reduced and long term compressive strength was increased while that at early ages was not so remarkable. The hydration exotherm rate was lower than that of the OPC.
Korea-Us FTA negotiation started in February 2006 with a view to overcoming those uncertainties in the global market and was finally concluded in April, 2007. The Agreement was officially signed between ministers two month later and it is expected to be ratified this year even though the process is most likely to be painful in both countries by the political resistances. For the new President of the United States, effective leadership will depends largely on how to encourage domestic industries such as Automobile industry and Iron and Steel industry from the financial crisis. Many trading partners of US worry about US foreign trade policy changes to protectionism that might be unequal to bear. Korea textile industry is one of the major industry in Korea as it occupies 15% of total number of manufacturers, 11% of total employment and 5% of national GDP. Korea-US FTA will provide a breakthrough for bouncing back by exploring new market. US agreed to remove all tariff and non-tariff barriers to 87% of textile items under trading. This study shows that Korean textile industry has been losing it's competitiveness as textile quota system abolished in the year 2005 and has been traced by pursuers such as China, India and Vietnam. In case of woven fabric which was a representing export item of Korea lost price competitiveness against China after 2005. This study seeks the strategy of Korea textile industry in the US market by utilizing the capacity of KOTRA offices in US. All possible statistical data obtained in the US were used for analysing the competitiveness. Fabrics and Garments are analysed independently with a view to finding out real trends of textile market in US. This study also suggest Korea's textile industry strategic ideas obtained from the potential buyers to show the way to penetrate into US market.
Several types of industrial byproducts are generated. With increased environmental awareness and its potential hazardous effects, the utilization of industrial byproducts in concrete has become an attractive alternative to their disposal. One such by-product is ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), which is a byproduct of the smelting process carried out in the iron and steel industry. The GGBS is very effective in the design and development of high-strength and high-performance concrete. This paper reviews the effect of GGBS on the workability, porosity, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength of concrete.

In the automobile industry, the various efforts to lower their industrial cost and enhance fuel efficiency have been made through process improvement or weight saving of automobile parts. Gear is one of significant parts of transmission, which is made by cast iron or alloy steel. It is expensive due to complex processing, inferior materials and large machining allowance. In this study, alternative gear cars oil which is based on fluid applications materials is produced by reducing surface induction hardening and carburizing hardened in production. And then, wear characteristic and mechanical properties such as hardness of the sintered alloy which is used as a substitute for small machining allowance is investigated.

Blast-Furnace Slag, a by-product of the iron or steel industry, has potential sa a cementitious material. The addition of a Blast-Furnace Slag generally reduces the heat of hydration and can confer significant improvements in resistance to sulfate attack and alkali-aggregate reaction, as well as increases in ultimate strength. But it also reduces early-age strength. In this study, for the purpose of improvement of early-age quality of Blast-Furnace Slag concrete, we choose blaine fineness of $6, 000~8, 000cm^2/g$ of Blast-Furnace Slag, and investigate the various properties of concrete. As a result, workability and early-age strength of Blast-Furnace Slag concrete were improved according to the increase of blaine fineness of Blast-Furnace Slag.
