  • In this study, we estimated the topside scale height of plasma density (Hm) using the Swarm constellation and ionosondes in Korea. The Hm above Korean Peninsula is generally around 50 km. Statistical distributions of the topside scale height exhibited a complex dependence upon local time and season. The results were in general agreement with those of Tulasi Ram et al. (2009), who used the same method to calculate the topside scale height in a mid-latitude region. On the contrary, our results did not fully coincide with those obtained by Liu et al. (2007), who used electron density profiles from Arecibo Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR) between 1966 and 2002. The disagreement may result from the limitations in our approximation method and data coverage used for estimations, as well as the inherent dependence of Hm on Geographic LONgitude (GLON).

  • The magnetosphere is often perturbed by impulsive input such as interplanetary shocks and solar wind discontinuities. We study how these initial perturbations are propagating within the magnetosphere over various latitude regions by adopting a three-dimensional numerical dipole model. We examine the wave propagation on a meridional plane in a time-dependent manner and compare the numerical results with multi-satellite and ground observations. The dipole model is used to represent the plasmasphere and magnetosphere with a realistic Alfven speed profile. It is found that the effects of refraction, which result from magnetic field curvature and inhomogeneous Alfven speed, are' found to become important near the plasmapause. Our results show that, when the disturbances are assumed at the subsolar point of the dayside magnetosphere, the travel time becomes smaller to the polar ionosphere compared to the equatorial ionosphere.

  • [1] There are systematical errors associated with ionospheric influence in retrieving key atmospheric parameters from radio occultation (RO) soundings. In order to obtain better-quality retrievals, we develop a new method, hereafter called National Central University Radio Occultation (NCURO) scheme, to reduce the ionospheric influence. The excess phase is divided into two parts, namely geometric excess length and path excess length (excess length along ray path due to refractivity effect). An excess phase equation is presented and implemented in the NCURO scheme Whose performance is evaluated through comparisons with model simulation and experimental data. The model simulation is based on the use of the ionospheric model 002001 and atmospheric model NRLMSISE-OO. Results show that the NCURO scheme significantly reduces the ionospheric influence at altitudes above 70 km as does the scheme presented in the literature, and provides better corrections for the atmospheric profile. • Lower thermospheric winds are forced primarily by non-uniform solar heating, atmospheric tides and other waves coming from below, and energy and momentum forcing associated with high-latitude magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, particularly ion drag and Joule heating. To understand the physical processes that control the thermospheric dynamics, we quantify the momentum forces that are mainly responsible for maintaining the high-latitude lower thermospheric wind system and examine the resulting momentum balance with the aid of the Thermosphere-Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (NCAR-TIEGCM) developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. • We report the plasma blob events that were observed from KOMPSAT-1 (2250 LT, 685-km altitude) and from DMSP F15 (2130 LT,840-km altitude) in the low-latitude ionosphere. The global distribution of blobs showed a season-longitudinal dependence similar to the distribution of the equatorial plasma bubbles, although they were observed along the ${\pm}$15 dip latitudes. The blobs drifted upward relative to the ambient plasmas, and the electron temperatures and H+ proportions were lower within the blobs compared to those in the background. These characteristics of the plasma blobs are very similar to the characteristics of the equatorial plasma bubbles. Then, we suggest that the blobs were originated from the lower altitudes by the mechanism that drives an upward drift of the plasma bubbles. The blob events did not occur in a correlated way with the magnetic activity or daily variation of the solar activity.

  • Formation of longitudinally wave-like plasma density structure in the low-latitude F region is now a well-known phenomenon from the extensive studies in recent years. Observations of plasma density from multiple satellites have shown that the locations of the crests of the plasma density that are seen to be stationary during daytime are shifted after sunset. This phenomenon has been understood to be caused by eastward drift of the ionosphere at night. However, the eastward drift velocity of the ionosphere after sunset is not sufficiently large enough to explain the day-night difference in the longitudinal density structure. The just after sunset and the nighttime ionospheric morphologymay be affected by this drift after sunset. In this study, we will investigate the temporal variation of the phase of the longitudinal density structure and vertical plasma drift by analyzing the ROCSAT-1, TIMED/GUVI, and DMSP data and verify the role of the vertical drift after sunset in the change of the phase of the longitudinal density structure.

  • This paper analyzes that the global positioning system (GPS) receiver differential code bias (DCB) has effect on the estimation the ionosphere total electron content (TEC). The data from nine permanent GPS sites of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) were used for the estimation of the receiver DCB before (Trimble 4000 SSi) and after (Trimble NetRS) the receiver replacement, using the singular value decomposition method. The results showed that the estimated mean value of the receiver DCB varied from 0.11 ns (nanosecond) to 7.54 ns before the receiver replacement, but the receiver DCBs shoed large values than 20 ns except some stations after the replacement. The receiver DCB showed a relatively large difference by types of the receivers, and, as a result, it had a great effect on the estimation the ionosphere TEC using GPS.
