  • Palladium on carbon powder was prepared using 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, one of room temperature ionic liquids. The synthesized particles were tested as a hexafluoropropylene hydrogenation catalyst. Moreover, the hydrogenation was performed under various reaction conditions to develop an optimum reaction process. The catalyst prepared by more than 3 wt% of palladium and the unity mole ratio of ionic liquid to palladium precursor showed higher catalytic activity. For reaction conditions, the complete hexafluoropropylene (HFP) conversion was achieved at these conditions; the volume flow ratio of hydrogen to HFP was higher than 1.25 and $GHSV_{HFP}$ was lower than 50000 mL/g-h.

  • As a result of increasing environmental concerns related to air quality and maintenance of automobiles, the alkylation of isobutane with olefins has become an even more important process for production of high quality gasoline. However, the widespread use of the alkylation process is limited by the polluting and corrosive liquid acid catalysts (HF and $H_2SO_4$) currently used in industry. For the reason, a large number of solid catalysts, especially zeolites, have been studied as an environmental friendly catalyst in this process. Recently, mesoporous solid acids and ionic liquids have been investigated as a green catalyst. In this review, the research of environmental friendly catalysts for an isobutane alkylation is summarized.

  • Generally, Nafion ionomer is used in the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) electrodes to achieve high power density. At the high temperature operation of PEFC, however, ionic conductivity of Nafion remarkably decreased due to the evaporation of water in Nafion polymer. Recently, many researchers have focused on using the Ionic Liquids(ILs) instead of water in Nafion polymer. ILs have intrinsic properties such as good electrochemical stability, high ionic conductivity, and non-flammability. Especially, ILs play a crucial role in proton conduction by the Grottuss mechanism and act as water in water-free Nafion polymer. However, it was found that the ILs was leached out of the polymer matrix easily. In this study, we prepared membrane electrode assemblies with various contents of ILs. The effect of ILs in the electrode of each designed was investigated by a cyclic voltammetry measurement and the cell performance obtained through a single cell test using H2/Air gases. Electrodes with different contents of ILs in catalyst layer were examined at high temperature and low humidified condition.

  • Cellulose-graft-poly (L-lactide) (cellulose-g-PLLA) was successfully prepared via ring-opening polymerization (ROP) by using 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as an organic catalyst in an ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AmimCl). The structure and morphology of the polymer was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). From wide-angle X-ray powder diffraction (WAXD) and degradation test (by acid, alkaline, PBS and enzyme solution), changes in the crystalline structure as a result of degradation was also investigated. The results indicated that materials which have low degree of crystallinity showing higher degradability, however, in acid liquor, enzyme solution, alkaline liquor and PBS system, the degradation rate of the polymer decreased by the above sequence. Moreover, with the further increase of graft degree of this material, its degradation degree decreased.

  • With increasing interest in fluorinated compounds, nucleophilic fluorination reaction has been generally used for synthesizing fluorine-containing chemicals. However, alkali metal fluorides (MFs) generally have low solubility and reactivity in organic solvent. To overcome these problems, various phase transfer catalysts (PTCs) have been investigated. Calix-arene is known as to capture the metal cation(M+), and therefore in this review, we would like to introduce several kinds of calix-arene based PTCs, such as bis-tert-alcohol-functionalized crown-6-calix[4]arene (BACCA), oligo-ethylene glycol linked bis-triethyleneglycol crown-5-calix[4]arene (BTC5A), and ionic liquid functionalized calix-arene based catalyst, as well as ion-pair receptor crown-6-calix[4]arene-capped calix[4]pyrrole.

  • Esterification of free fatty acid with methanol to biodiesel was investigated in a batch reactor using various solid acid catalysts, such as polymer cation-exchanged resins with sulfuric acid functional group(Amberlyst-15, Dowex 50Wx8), acidic ionic liquids (ILs)-modified silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$, $SiO_2-[ASCBI][HSO_4]$) and grafted silica gels respectively with $-SO_3H$ and $-SO_2Cl$ functional group ($SiO_2-R-SO_3H$, $SiO_2-R-SO_2Cl$). The effects of reaction time, temperature, reactant concentration(molar ratio of methanol to oleic acid), and catalyst amount were studied. Allylimidazolium-based ILs on modified silica gels were superior to other tested solid acid catalysts. Especially, the performance of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ (immobilized by grafting of 3-allyl-1-(4-sulfobutyl)imidazolium hydrogen sulfate on silica gel) was better than that of a widely known Amberlyst-15 catalyst at the same reaction conditions. A high conversion yield of 96% was achieved in the esterification reaction of the simulated cooking oil at 353 K for 2 h. The high catalytic activity of $SiO_2-[ASBI][HSO_4]$ was attributed to the presence of strong Brønsted acid sites from the immobilized functional groups. The catalyst was recovered and the biodiesel product was separated by simple processes such as decantation and filtration.

  • Tricyclopentadiene (TCPD) as a next generation high density fuel was synthesized by Diels-Alder oligomerization reaction of DCPD. TCPD was prepared by ionic liquid (IL) catalysts with combination of cationic and anionic precursors. Two kinds of anionic precursors such as copper(I) chloride (CuCl) and iron(III) chloride ($FeCl_3$) and cationic precursors such as triethylamine hydrochloride (TEAC) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) were used. The preparation of TCPD using IL catalyst was superior to that using Diels-Alder reaction in terms of DCPD conversion and TCPD yield. In addition, TCPD yield was correlated with Lewis acidity by changing the ratio of anionic and cationic precursors. The TCPD yield was higher when using CuCl as anionic precursor than that of using $FeCl_3$. Control of Lewis acidity by changing the molar ratio of anionic and cationic precursors could further improve TCPD yield as well.

  • Activated carbon SCR(CSCR) catalyst that is used to remove $NO_x$ in exhaust gas including boron discharged from the production process of liquid crystal display(LCD) shows deactivation when boron is deposited to block the pores within the catalyst or to cover its active sites. The spent carbon catalyst is regenerated by washing with various surfactants, drying and calcination. For comparison of the physical and chemical properties before and after the regeneration with the variables, type of surfactants and calcination condition, element analysis by ICP, $N_{2}$ adsorption were conducted. $DeNO_{x}$ in SCR with $NH_3$ was carried out in a fixed bed reactor at $120^{\circ}C$. The activated carbon catalyst regenerated through washing with a non-ionic surfactant in $H_{2}O$ at $90^{\circ}C$ and calcination under $N_{2}$ gas at $550^{\circ}C$ shows similar level of surface area and $NO_x$ removal efficiency with those of fresh catalyst.

  • The HAN which is an ionic liquid is a non-toxic monopropellant with high storability, and its specific impulse can be increased by blending methanol, thereby it can substitute the hydrazine. The HAN was synthesized by acid-base reaction of hydroxylamine and nitric acid, and the blending ratio of HAN and methanol is 8.2:1. The iridium catalyst was used to decompose the HAN, and 1 N class thruster with shower head type injector having one orifice was used to evaluate the HAN/Methanol propellant. The thermal stability of distributor was increased by using ceramic material to endure the high temperature of product gas. The preheating temperature of catalyst should be $400^{\circ}C$ at least for the complete decomposition. The feeding pressure should be increased to increase the $C^*$ efficiency, thereby the decomposition performance was decreased upstream catalyst, and the performance of thruster was decreased. The fine metal mesh was inserted after the injector to improve the atomization of propellant, thereby it can settle the performance decrease problem. The phenomenon of performance decrease was remarkably improved owing to the insertion of fine metal mesh.
