The biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia, was used to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. Previously, Cr(VI) was removed through its reduction to Cr(III) when brought into contact with the biomass. In this study, the effects of ionic strength, background electrolytes, and Cr(III), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Fe(III) on the Cr(VI) reduction were examined. An increased ionic strength inhibited the Cr(VI) reduction. The presence of other heavy metals, such as Cr(III), Ni(II), or Zn(II), only slightly affected the Cr(VI) reduction, while Fe(III) enhanced the reduction. Although the above various parameters could affect the reduction rate of Cr(VI) by Ecklonia biomass, these effects were relatively smaller than those of pH and temperature. In addition, the previously derived rate equation was found to be applicable over a range of ionic strengths and with different background electrolytes. In conclusion, Ecklonia, bioniass may be a good candidate as a biosorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewaters containing various other impurities, and scale-up to a practical process may be accomplished using the previously derived rate equation.
We have investigated thermal properties showed by changing the content of carbon black which is the component parts of semiconductive shield in underground power transmission cable. Specimens were made of sheet with the nine of those for measurement. Heat capacity (${\Delta}$H), glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) were measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). The ranges of measurement temperature were from -100($^{\circ}C$) to 100($^{\circ}C$), and heating rate was 4($^{\circ}C$/min). And then thermal diffusivity was measured by LFA 447. The dimension of measurement temperature was 25[$^{\circ}C$]. Glass transition temperature of specimens was showed near -25[$^{\circ}C$] and the heat capacity and the melting temperature from the DSC results were simultaneously decreased according to increasing the content of carbon black, while thermal diffusivity was increased according to increasing the content of carbon black. Because ionic impurities of carbon black having Fe, Co, Mn, Al and Zn are rapidly passed kinetic energy increasing the number of times breaking during the unit time with the near particles according to increasing vibration of particles by the applied heat energy.
Acceptor-doped cerium pyrophosphates have shown significant proton conductivity of > $10^{-2}Scm^{-1}$ in the range of $100-300^{\circ}C$ and are considered promising candidates for use as electrolytes in proton-conducting, ceramic electrolyte fuel cells (PCFCs). But, cerium pyrophosphates themselves do not have structural protons, and protons incorporate into their material bulk only as impurities on exposure to a hydrogen-containing atmosphere. However, proton incorporation and proton conduction in these materials are expected to be affected by factors such as the nature (ionic size and charge) and concentration of the aliovalent dopant, processing history (synthesis route and microstructure), and the presence of residual phosphorous phosphate ($P_mO_n$) phases. An exact understanding of these aspects has not yet been achieved, leading to large differences in the magnitude of proton conductivity of cerium pyrophosphates reported in various studies. Herein, we systematically address some of these aspects, and present an overview of factors affecting proton conductivity inacceptor-doped $CeP_2O_7$.
The permeation of $Ca^{2+}$ ions through the materials such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and non-halogenated flame retardant cross linked polyolefin (FR-XLPO) used for CN-CV underground distribution power cable jackets was investigated. The permeation of $Ca^{2+}$ ions was found to increase with the increase of time. The FR-XLPO showed higher permeation of $Ca^{2+}$ ions, by a factor of about two, than the PVC. This was explained by the destruction of structural integrity caused by mixing a large amount of mineral flame retardant such as $Mg(OH)_2$ used to impart non-flame ability to the jacket material.

Low-operating voltage organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have been realized with high dielectric constant (${\kappa}$) polymer such as cyanoethylated poly vinyl alcohol (CR-V, ${\kappa}=12$). Since the $high-{\kappa}$polymers are likely to contain water and ionic impurities, large hysteresis and considerable leakage current are frequently observed in OFETs. To solve these problems, we cross-linked the CR-V by using a cross-linking agent. Cross-linked CR-V dielectrics showed high dielectric constant of 11.1 and good insulating properties, resulting in a high capacitance ($81nF/cm^{2}$ at 1MHz) at 120 nm of dielectric thickness. Pentacene FETs with cross-linked CR-V dielectrics exhibited high carrier mobility ($0.72\;cm^{2}/Vs$), small subthreshold swing (185 mV/dec) and little hysteresis at low-operating voltage (${\Leq}-3V$).
The IR spectra of he heavy metal fluoride glasses showed peaks at $1, 400cm^{-1}$ or $1, 100cm^{-1}$ due to metal oxyfluoride impurities. The intensity of this band and hence the oxide impurity content of the glass could be reduced considerably by the use of reactive atmosphere melting under $CCl_4$ In comparison with the fundamental IR absorption band of heavy metal oxides the oxide impurity bands observed in the heavy metal fluoride glasses are multiphonon bands due to a 2-phonon absorption process. The envelope of the a vs. v curve beyond thue fundamental region shows the exponential fall off of a with increasing v-typical of intrinsic multiphonon absorption. In the multiphonon region the amount of structure is intermediate between that observed for covalent solids and that for ionic solids.

The use of ion exchange resins to remove ionic impurities from solution is prevalent in industrial process systems, including in the primary heat transport system (PHTS) purification circuit of nuclear power plants. Despite its extensive use in the nuclear industry, our general understanding of ion exchange cannot fully explain the complex chemistry in ion exchange beds, particularly when operated at or near their saturation limit. This work investigates the behaviour of mixed-bed ion exchange resin, saturated with species representative of corrosion products in a CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) reactor PHTS, particularly with respect to iron chemistry in the resin bed and the removal of lithium ions from solution. Experiments were performed under deaerated conditions, analogous to normal PHTS operation. The results show interesting iron chemistry, suggesting the hydrolysis of cation resin bound ferrous species and the subsequent formation of either a solid hydrolysis product or the soluble, anionic Fe(OH)3-.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the fabrication of $\beta$-PVDF($\beta$-Polyvinylidene fluoride, ${\beta}-PVF_2$) organic thin films using the vapor deposition method. Vapor deposition was performed under the following conditions: the temperature of evaporator, the applied electric field, and the pressure of reaction chamber were $270^{\circ}C$, 142.4 kV/cm, and $2.0{\times}10^{-5}\;Torr$, respectively. The molecular structure of the evaporated organic thin films were evaluated by a FT-IR. The results showed that the characteristic absorption peaks of $\beta$-form crystal increase from 72% to 95.5% with an increase in the substrate temperature. In the analysis of the electric characteristics, the abnormal increases in the relative dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor in the regions of low frequency and high temperature are known to be caused by inclusion of impurity carriers in the PVDF organic thin films. In order to analyze quantitatively the abnormalities in the conductivity mechanism caused by ionic impurities, the product of the ion density and the mobility that affect the electrical property in polymeric insulators is analyzed. In the case of a specimen produced by varying the substrate temperature from $30^{\circ}C$ to $105^{\circ}C$, the product of mobility and the ion density decreased from $4.626{\times}10^8$ to $8.47{\times}10^7/V{\cdot}cm{\cdot}s$. This result suggests that the higher the substrate temperature is maintained, the better excluded the impurities are, and the more electrically stable material can be obtained.
Alkaline solutions such as $NH_4$OH, choline and TMAH (($CH_3$)$_4$NOH) have been introduced in semiconductor wet processing of silicon wafers to control ionic and particulate impurities following etching in acidic solutions. These chemicals usually mixed with hydrogen peroxide and/or surfactants to control the etch rate of silicon. The highest etch rate was observed in $NH_4$OH solutions at a pH in alkaline solutions. It indicates that the etch rate depends on the content of $OH^{-}$ as well as cations of alkaline solutions. STM/AFM techniques were used to characterize the effect of alkaline solutions on silicon surface roughness. In SC1 (mixture of $NH_4$OH : $H_2$$O_2$ : $H_2$O) solutions, the reduction of the ammonium hydroxide proportion from 1 to 0.1 decreased the surface roughness ($R_{rms}$) from 6.4 to $0.8\AA$. The addition of $H_2$$O_2$ and surfactants to choline and TMAH reduced the values of $R_{p-v}$ and $R_{rms}$ significantly. $H_2$$_O2$ and surfactants added in alkaline solutions passivate bare silicon surfaces by the oxidation and adsorption, respectively. The passivation of surfaces in alkaline solutions resulted in lower etch rate of silicon thereby provided smoother surfaces.s.ces.s.
