Effects of NaOH Treatment on the Adsorption Ability of Surface Oxidized Activated Carbon for Heavy Metals

  • Heavy metal (Zinc, Cadmium, Lead) adsorption onto surface modified activated carbon was performed in order to better understand the effect of sodium ion addition to activated carbon. Surface modification methods in this research included water washing, nitric acid washing, and sodium addition after nitric acid washing. These surface modifications generated oxygen functional groups with sodium ions on the surface of the activated carbon.. This caused the change of the specific surface area as well as in the ratio of the carboxyl groups. Heavy metal adsorption onto sodium-containing activated carbon was the most among the three modifications. After the adsorption of heavy metals, the carboxyl group ratio decreased and sodium ions on the surface of the activated carbon were almost non-existent after the adsorption of heavy metals onto sodium-containing activated carbon. The results from this research indicated that ion exchange with sodium ions in carboxyl groups effectively improved heavy metal adsorption rather than electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen ion exchange.

Synthesis of Multifunctional AN-co-(MMA/IA) Fibrous ion-exchanger by Hydrolysis and Adsorption Properties for Trace Transition Elements (가수분해에 의한 AN-co-(MMA(IA) 다관능성 섬유이온교환체의 합성 및 미랑 전이금속 흡착특성)

  • In In order to remove harmful trace elements such as $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ , $Cr_2O_7\;^{2-}$ from water, we synthesized AN-co-(MMA/IA) according to various mole ratio of monomers and spun by wet-spinning. And multi-functional PAN ion exchangers were prepared by hydrolysis. We observed structure, degree of functionalization, ion exchange capacity, distribution coefficient and mechanical properties for ion exchanger. Anion exchange capacity decreased in 4.5 ~ 4.2 meq/g with increasing of IA content and cation exchange capacity increased in 1.8 ~ 2.2 meq/g. Tensile strength of the ion exchanger increased up to 0.008 mol% IA content and appeared maximum value by 216$kg/cm^2$Distribution coefficient for AN-co-(MMA/IA) ion exchanger appeared maximum value for Co(II), Ni(II) in pH 5-6 range and for Cr(III) in pH 3-4 range. And the adsorption capacity was in the order of Cr(III) > Co(II) > Ni(II) for multicomponent in continuous process.

Effect of Packing Density of ion-Exchange on the Nickel Adsorption Column in Electroplating Rinse Water (이온교환 칼럼 충진비의 변화가 도금폐수 중 니켈이온 흡착에 미치는 영향)

  • It was observed that adsorption characteristics of sulfonated fabric ion-exchanger for separating nickel ion from electroplating rinse water. Swelling ratio was increased by increasing degree of sulfonation and polarity of solvent. Ion-exchange capacity was also increased by increasing degree of sulfonation and showed 3.38 meq/g at 16% sulfonated ion-exchanger. There was little effects of pH. Adsorption equilibrium was attained within 10 min, and adsorption rate was 7.5 mg/min. Adsorption capacity was not changed after 7 cycles of regeneration process. Regeneration adsorption capacity was slightly decreased to 2.01 meq/g. It confirmed that durability of sulfonated fabric ion-exchanger was suitable for adsorption process. Adsorption equilibrium time was linearly increased by increasing L/D and adsorption capacity showed the ion exchange capacity within the range of 2.71 ∼ 3.01 meq/g in continuous process. Design of adsorption column could be possible for L/D<2. Under constant L/D condition, there is no little pH effect when rinse water is acidic solution, and operation condition of adsorption process was optimized under pH 5.

Exchange Bias Modifications in NiFe/FeMn/NiFe Trilayer by a Nonmagnetic Interlayer

  • Modification in exchange bias of a NiFe/FeMn/NiFe trilayer, on introduction of a nonmagnetic Al layer at the top FeMn/NiFe interface, is investigated in multilayers prepared by rf magnetron sputtering. The introduction of Al layer leads to vanishing of bias of the top NiFe layer. But the bias for the bottom NiFe layer increases steadily with increasing Al layer thickness and attains bias (230 Oe) which is greater than that of the trilayer without the Al layer (150 Oe). When the top NiFe layer thickness is varied, exchange bias has highest value at 12 nm thickness for 1 nm thicknes of Al layer. Ion beam etching of the top NiFe layer also leads to an enhancement in bias for the bottom NiFe layer.

N Mineralization and Nitrification in Forest Soils : Effect of Chemical Treatment on N Adsorption by Ion Exchange Resin (산림토양내(山林土壤內) 질소(窒素)의 양료화(養料化)와 질산화(窒酸化)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) : ion 교환수지(交換樹指)의 처리(處理) 방법(方法)에 따른 질소(窒素)의 흡수율(吸收率) 변화(變化))

  • Soil N mineralization and nitrification can be measured conveniently using mixed bed (cation and anion) exchange resin bags. However, appropriate use of these resin bags requires pretreatment to avoid colorimetric interference and standardize N ion adsorption. Three pretreatments were evaluated : control (untreated), 2 M NaCl with a distilled water rinse, and 4 M NaCl. The 4 M NaCl treatment was effective at removing background levels of $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$, but adsorbed low amounts (about 40%) of inorganic N from standard solutions. Untreated resin bags adsorbed a constant, higher amount of $NO_3{^-}$ (60%), but did not remove background levels of $NH_4{^+}$. The 2 M NaCl treatment followed by a distilled water rinse performed best : it removed background $NH_4{^+}$ and adsorbed a constant amount of both $NH_4{^+}$ (70%) and $NO_3{^-}$ (60%). Because the ion exchange resin is fairly expensive, we also tested if the resin bags could be reused. Resin bags were either loaded with $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ in the laboratory or incubated in soil in the field, desorbed with the 2 M NaCl treatment, and then loaded with standard $NH_4{^+}$ and $NO_3{^-}$ solutions. Lab loaded resin bags adsorbed about 60% of inorganic N then loaded with 2.5 or $5.0mgN\;1^{-1}$ and 70% when loaded at 10 or $20mgN\;1^{-1}$, whereas reused field incubated bags showed the opposite adsorption efficiency. These results demonstrate that resin bags can give reproducible results, but care must be taken to evaluate the effect of pretreatment and potential for reuse.

Destruction of Spent Organic ion Exchange Resins by Ag(II)-Mediated Electrochemical Oxidation (Ag(II)매개산화에 의한 폐 유기이온교환수지의 분해)

  • A study on the destruction of organic cation and anion exchange resins by electro-generated Ag(II) as a mediator was carried out to develop the ambient-temperature aqueous process, known as Ag(II)-mediated electro-chemical oxidation (MEO) process, for the treatment of a large quantity of spent organic ion exchange resins as the low and Intermediated-level radioactive wastes arising from the operation, maintenance and repairs of nuclear facilities. The effects of controllable process parameters such as applied current density, temperature, and nitric acid concentration on the MEO of organic ion exchange resins were investigated. The cation exchange resin was completely decomposed to $CO_2$. The current efficiency increased with a decrease in applied current density while nitric acid concentration and temperature on the MEO of cation exchange resin did not affect the MEO. On the other hand, anion exchange resins were decomposed to CO and $CO_2$. The ultimate conversion to CO was about $10\%$ regardless of temperature. The destruction efficiencies to $CO_2$ were dependent upon temperature and the effective destruction of anion exchange resin could be obtained above $60^{\circ}C$.

Strong Absorption of Cations into a Cation Exchange Resin in Concentrated HClO$_4$

  • The absorptions of Fe(Ⅲ), Tb(Ⅲ), Tl(Ⅰ), Ce(Ⅲ), Th(Ⅳ), and $UO_2^{2+}$ ions into the Dowex 50W-X2, 100-200 mesh resin were investigated by spectrophotometry to understand the abnormal strong absorption behavior of cations to cation exchange resins in concentrated HClO4. The distribution coefficients increase in the order : Tl(Ⅰ) < Fe(Ⅲ) < Tb(Ⅲ)∼Ce(Ⅲ) < $UO_2^{2+}$< Th(Ⅳ) and the order is interpreted in terms of the ratio of charge-to-ionic radius. The mole ratios of increment of $ClO_4^-$ ion absorption to metal ion absorption showed the same order as the distribution coefficients, which indicates that the electrostatic association between $ClO_4^-$ ion and metal ion plays a major role in the strong absorption.

  • The polysaccharides were extracted from fruiting body, mycelia, and cell-free broth of Agaricus blazei Murill. The crude polysaccharides were obtained by the ethanol addtion. They were further purified using ion-exchange chromatography and gel chromatography. Ion-exchange chromatography using DEAE-cellulose column separated neutral and acidic polysaccharides. Neutral polysaccharides were then purified with gel filtration chromatography. For single peak obtained from gel filtration chromatography was molecular weight was measured with Sepharose CL-6B. The same procedure with acidic polysaccharides were performed to get the purified polysaccharides.

두 가지 전이금속이 도입된 수산화인회석의 합성 및 특성연구

  • 수산화인회석(Hydroxyapatite)는 뼈와 이빨의 무기물의 주성분으로서 칼슘과 인산염으로 구성된다. 수산화인회석의 합성방법은 수열합성법(hydrothermal method)를 사용하였으며 NaOH 농도조절을 통해 다양한 수산화인회석을 합성하였다. 합성된 수산화인회석을 XRD로 확인하였으며 Hydroxyapatite 표면에 Cobalt를 Ion-exchange 반응을 통하여 도입하였으며, 이를 다시 hydrazine을 매개체로 하여 Fe (Iron)를 도입하였다. 합성된 수산화인회석을 IR로 분석하였고, ICP를 통해 Co, Fe를 정량하였으며 TEM을 통해 표면을 관찰하였다.

  • 본 고에서는 유리 집적광센서의 제작에 적합한 유리재료들의 종류와 특성을 설명하였으며, 이들 유리의 종류에 맞도록 개발되어진 제작기술 중에서 이온교환(Ion exchange)방법과 silica-on-silicon(SOS)방법을 소개하였다. 그리고 이러한 공정기술을 이용하여 제작되어진 유리 집적광센서 중에서 물체의 거리를 측정하기 위한 마이클슨 간섭계(michelson interferometer)와 물질의 농도를 측정하기 위한 화학센서(chemical sensor)들을 소개하였다.
