  • For more than four decades, ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) sensors that respond to the change of surface potential on a membrane have been intensively investigated in the chemical, environmental, and biological spheres, because of their potential, in particular their compatibility with CMOS manufacturing technology. Here, we demonstrate a new type of ISFET with dual-gate (DG) structure fabricated on ultra-thin body (UTB), which highly boosts sensitivity, as well as enhancing chemical stability. The classic ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) has been confronted with chronic problems; the Nernstian response, and detection limit with in the Debye length. The super-coupling effects imposed on the ultra thin film serve to not only maximize sensitivity of the DG ISFET, but also to strongly suppress its leakage currents, leading to a better chemical stability. This geometry will allow the ISFET based biosensor platform to continue enhancement into the next decade.

  • DLC (diamond liked carbon) coating of the tungsten carbide (WC) alloy core surface for molding a glass aspheric lens improves the quality of glass lens and the molding core and is characterized by high hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability. In this study, the effect of DLC coating of a thin film by means of the filtered AIP (arc ion plating) technique was examined on Ra and shape of the coated surface. Roughness before and after DLC coating was measured and the result showed that the roughness was improved after coating as compared to before coating. It was observed that DLC coating of the WC alloy core surface for molding had an effect on improving the roughness and shape of the core surface. It is considered that this will have an effect on improving abrasion resistance and the service life of the core surface.

  • Ta films were deposited on Si (100) substrates at zero substrate bias voltage and a substrate bias voltage of -125 V ($V_{s}$ = -125 V) using a non-mass separated ion beam deposition system. To investigate the effect of the negative substrate bias voltage on the impurity concentration in the Ta films, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) was used to determine impurities in the Ta films. By the SIMS depth profiles with $Cs^{+}$ cluster ion beam, high intensities of O, C and Si were clearly found in the Ta film at $V_{s}$ = 0 V, whereas these impurities remarkably decreased in the Ta film at $V_{s}$ = -125 V. Furthermore, from the SIMS result with $Cs^{+}$ and $O_2^{+}$ ion beams, it was found that applying the negative substrate bias voltage could affect individual impurity contents in the Ta films during the deposition. Discussions concerning the effect of the negative substrate bias voltage on the impurity concentration of Ta films will be described in details.

  • Electrochemical determination of Ag(I) ion was carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with the carbon paste electrode (CPE) containing cinchonidine. The detection limit for Ag(I) ion was shown to be $1.0 {\times}10^{-6}$ M in conventional CV and up to $8.0{\times}10^{-9}$ M (${\pm}$0.6%) using DPV. The optimum analytical condition of Ag(I) ion was determined as follows: pH 7, 20 minutes of deposition time, and 50% (w/w) cinchonidine to carbon powder composition of electrode. The interference effect of various metal ions added to the deposition solution was also studied. The peak current of Ag(I) ion except Hg(II) ion was decreased roughly 25% compare to Ag(I) ion only. When Mn(II) ion was present in sample solution at pH 9, shown a large interference effect.

  • An annular flow type of copper electrolysis reactor was setup in order to generate the copper ions to remove algae in water. The operating characteristics of the reactor and the effect of copper ion on algae have been considered. By controling the applied current, the copper ion concentration could be obtained as desired level and the faradaic efficiency was above 90%. When the flow rate was increased, the copper ion concentration was linearly decreased due to the dilution effect and the effect of concentration overpotential was insignificant. With the increase of pH in water, the copper ion concentration was linearly decreased and not affected by the conductivity of the water. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was sharply decreased with the increase of copper ion concentration. The algae was effectively removed as the copper ion concentration was above 0.2 ppm. There was no difference between the copper ions obtained by dissolving copper sulfate and those produced by copper electrolysis. The algae removal efficiency was above 90% after 5 days as the copper ion concentration was above 0.4 ppm.

  • In the previous study, african marigold petals extract was valued as an excellent natural yellow dye because of its distinguished reactivity with various mordants and color fastness. In this study, we were studied on effect of absorbed metal ion by after-treatment of mordants on the color and fastness in human hair and wool fiber dyed with african marigold petals extract because the proteinic and cellulosic fiber were very well dyed. The dyed human hair showed better dyeing ability in the color fastness than wool fiber on tests of light, wash and perspiration. The absorbed metal ion concentration of mordanted human hairs were 1 or 5 times higher than wool fibers. However, excess of absorbed metal ion haven't consistent effect on K/S and surface color. Human hairs dyed using african marigold extract and mordanted with Al, Sn, Cu and Fe were showed various reddish yellow color groups and good dyeing ability on african marigold extract.

  • Several kinds of coagulants such as aluminum sulfate, PAC, PASS are being used to treat drinking water resulting in residual aluminum ions in the water. Recently, it has been reported that high intake of aluminum ion may cause neurological dieseases such as Alzheimer's diesease and presenile dementia. Because of the possible adverse effect, WHO and EEC recommand to regulate residual aluminum. The autorities in Korea also has plan of regulating residual alunimum from 1995. But there is not enough information about the range of residual aluminum ion concentration when the aluminum sulfate, PAC or PASS has been used as a coagulant. Therefore the study has been conducted to find out the range of residual aluminum ion concentration after using aluminum sulfate, PAC, and PASS. Furthermore the effect of turbidity and alkalinity have been investigated. The experimental results are summarized as; 1. Most of the residual aluminum ion concentrations were within $10^{-6}$ and $10^{-5}mole/l$. Three coagulants have not showed any considerable difference in the residual aluminum concentration up to 50 NTU. However PAC has showed the least residual aluminum in high turbidity water over 100 NTU. 2. The low alkalinity water having 25mg/l as $CaCO_3$ has showed less residual aluminum than the water having 50mg/l alkalinity. However, the difference was not significcant. 3. Even the lowest residual aluminum concentration was over 0.05mg/l. Therefore the process to reduce residual aluminum would be necessary in water treatment plants.

  • For the realization of high-k insulator, aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) was deposited by using an oxygen ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) during e-beam evaporation. From the thickness of the $Al_2O_3$ layer evaporated with IBAD process, it was possible to investigate the etching effect of ion beam at higher energies during e-beam evaporation. It was also possible to obtain a higher capacitance as a result of IBAD in spite of the reduced thickness of $Al_2O_3$.

  • Pseudo-first-order rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of 8-(5-nitroquinolyl) 3-furoate with alkali metal ethoxides in anhydrous ethanol. The plot of kobs vs the concentration of alkali metal ethox ides is linear for the reactions performed in the presence of a complexing agent, 18-crown-6 ether, but exhibits upward curvatures for the corresponding reactions performed in the absence of the complexing agent, indicating that the alkali metal ions in this study behave as catalysts. Second-order rate constants were determined for the reactions with dissociated free ethoxide (kEtO-) and with ion paired alkali metal ethoxides (kEtO-M + ) from ion pairing treatments. The magnitude of catalytic effect (kEtO-M + /kEtO-) was found to be 1.7, 3.4 and 2.5 for the reaction of 8-(5-nitroquinolyl) 3-furoate, while 1.4, 3.6 and 4.2 for that of 4-nitrophenyl 2-furoate, 1.8, 3.7 and 2.4 for that of 8-(5-nitroquinolyl) benzoate, and 2.0, 9.8 and 9.3 for that of 8-(5-nitroquinolyl) 2-furoate with EtO- Li+ , EtO- Na+ and EtO- K+ , respectively. A 5-membered chelation at the leaving group is suggested to be responsible for the catalytic effect shown by alkali metal ions.
