Photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial investigation of nano synthesized Ag3VO4 particles @PAN nanofibers

  • Well-dispersed Ag3VO4 nanoparticles @polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were synthesized by an easily controlled, template-free method as a photo-catalyst for the degradation of methylene blue. Their structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties have been studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with rapid energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, photoluminescence, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The characterization procedures revealed that the obtained material is PAN nanofibers decorated by Ag3VO4 nanoparticles. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue investigated in an aqueous solution under irradiation showed 99% degradation of the dye within 75 min. Finally, the antibacterial performance of Ag3VO4 nanoparticles @PAN composite nanofibers was experimentally verified by the destruction of Escherichia coli. These results suggest that the developed inexpensive and functional nanomaterials can serve as a non-precious catalyst for environmental applications.

  • The Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is exclusivity used as the articulation component with metal or ceramic materials in artificial joint prosthesis because of its good mechanical properties. In the long term however, wear of UHMWPE causes complex problems and hence causes loosening of He prosthesis. In this study, we tried to enhance the wear property of UHMWPE by attaching a hydrophilic graft on the UHMWPE surface and by improving surface hardness without deteriorating the mechanical properties of UHMWPE. This was achieved by ion implantation and by ${\gamma}$-irradiation to the surface in acrylic acid solution and by photo-polymerization in divinylbenzen (DVB), diallysophthalate (DAIP) solution. The wear test was performed by a wear testing machine of ball-on-disk type devised by the authors. The UHMWPE with hydrophlic surface and increased surface hardness developed by above treatments showed less volumetric wear.

  • $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_{n-1}Cu_nO_x$(n=0, 1, 2)superconducting thin films have been fabricated by atomic layer-by-layer deposition at an ultra low growth rate using IBS(Ion Beam Sputtering) method. During the deposition, 90 mol% ozone gas of typical pressure of $1{\sim}9{\times}10^{-5}$ Torr are supplied with ultraviolet light irradiation for oxidation. XRD and RHEED investigations reveal out that a buffer layer with some different compositions is formed at the early deposition stage of less than 10 units cell and then Bi-2201 oriented along the c-axis is grown.

UV 조사법을 이용한 새로운 무기박막 표면에 액정 배향 효과 (Alignment Effect of Liquid Crystal on new organics thin film using Ultraviolet Exposure method)

  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the Ultraviolet (UV) alignment method on a-C:H thin-films, and investigated electro-optical performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV irradiation on a-C:H thin-film surfaces was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. The good electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface for 1min.

  • The characcteristics of anthocyanin pigments from crab apple (Malus prunifolia Wild. Borkh. "red fruit") by ethanol extract were investigated at various condition of light temperature sugar, organic acid me-tal ion and pH. The pigments were stable(over the 60%) on the light irradiation throughout 20 days sto-rage period at room temperature and in the pesenc of Al-foil red blue green and yellow cover were rage period at room temperature and in the pesence of Al-foil red blue green and yellow cover were very stable. The pigments also showed high thermal stbility(over the 67% at 115$^{\circ}C$ 10min) at pH2.5 respectively. The pigments with added organic acid greatly increased thickness of red color. The pig-ments with added metal ions at pH 2.5 such as Na+ K+, Mg2+ Ca2+ and Mn2+ were stable throughout 20 days storage period at $25^{\circ}C$. But Cu2+ addition showed the rapidly degradation of the pigments and Al3+ addition induced the color conversion from red to redish violet. The thickness of the red color of anthocyanin pigments increased increased as the pH decreased. These results indicated that crab apple antho-cyanin pigments might be potental source of natural food colorant. colorant.

전자선을 이용해 가교된 SPEEK 기본 물질로 하는 이온 교환막의 특성 분석 (The Characterization of Crosslinked SPEEK Based Ion Exchange Membranes Prepared by EB Irradiation Method)

  • Crosslinked SPEEK/PVDF membrane were prepared by EB radiation method with various contents of PVDF. The prepared membranes were subjected to a comparative study of proton exchange membranes for fuel cell appreciations. The crosslinked SPEEK/PVDF membranes were characterized by using DMA, DSC and SAXS. The DMA data indicate that the ionic modulus values and cluster $T_g$ decrease with increasing PVDF content. Thus, it was suggested that the number of clustering in the crosslinked membranes can be reduced with increasing PVDF content. The DSC results were shown that the degree of crystalline of the membrane increased with increasing PVDF content. The morphology of the crosslinkied membranes was shown that with increasing PVDF content, the number of crystalline domain of the SPEEK/PVDF membranes increased but ionic aggregation of the membranes decreased. The water uptake behavior, ionic exchange capacity (IEC) and proton conductivity were decreased with increasing PVDF content. The overall findings suggest that the crosslinked membranes offer the possibility for improving the performance of PEMFC, provided that the membranes have thermal and hydration stability.

Enhancement of NOx photo-oxidation by Fe-doped TiO2 nanoparticles

  • Microwave hydrothermal-assisted sol-gel method was employed to synthesize the Fe doped TiO2 photocatalyst. The morphological analysis suggests anatase phase nanoparticles of ~20 nm with an SBET area of 283.99 ㎡/g. The doping of Fe ions in TiO2 created oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ species as revealed through the XPS analysis. The reduction of the band gap (3.1 to 2.8 eV) is occurred by doping effect. The as-prepared photocatalyst was applied for removal of NOx under solar light irradiation. The doping of Fe in TiO2 facilitates 75 % of NOx oxidation efficiency which is more than two-fold enhancement than the TiO2 photocatalyst. The possible reason of enhancement is associated with high surface area, oxygen vacancy, and reduction of the band gap. Also, the low production of toxic intermediates, NO2 gas, is further confirmed by Combustion Ion Chromatography. The mechanism related NOx oxidation by the doped photocatalyst is explained in this study.

Development of neutron time-of-flight measurement system for 1.7-MV tandem proton accelerator with lithium target

  • In this study, we developed a neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) measurement system for a 1.7-MV tandem proton accelerator with a target covered with 300-nm-thick lithium (Li) layer. With implementation of beam chopping module after its ion source, the accelerator is configured to operate in pulsed-beam mode with a pulse width <50 ns at 20-kHz repetition rate. This enables the gamma flash-type nTOF measurement system to identify the neutron generated with 3-MeV proton beam energy. The nTOF system consists of a 30" cylindrical NaI(Tl) and four stilbene scintillation detectors. The NaI(Tl) scintillator is placed 50 cm from the Li target to measure the time of beam irradiation on the target, and the stilbene detectors are placed 2 and 2.4 m away to measure nTOF at each location. The nTOF system successfully measured the generated neutron energy at irradiated proton energies of 2.6 and 3.0 MeV with an average energy resolution of 15%.

$Li^{+}$ 이온 주입된 $Al_2O_3$의 결함 특성 (Defect center of $Li^{+}$ ion implanted $Al_2O_3$)

  • 본 연구에서는 감마선 조사, 전자선 조사방법에 의한 전자만의 주업 및 이온 주업 후 전자선조사 방법으로 전자들이 주입된 $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$의 열자극 발광(Thermoluminescence : TL)에 관련된 결함 형태를 조사하였다. 감마선 조사된 $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$의 열자극 발광 곡선은 380K, 415K, 440K, 460K 및 475K에서 TL peak가 나타났다. 광흡수 스펙트럼과 자외선 photobleaching 결과로부터 감마선 조사된 $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$의 380K와 475K TL peak는 F center에, 415K TL peak는 $F^{+}$ center에 기인함을 알았다. 전자선 조사방법에 의하여 전자 주입된 $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$의 열자극 발광 곡선은 380K, 415K, 440K 및 460K TL peak를 가졌고, $Li^{+}$ 이온 주입 후 전자선 조사방법으로 전자들이 주입된 $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$는 440K에서 TL peak가 나타났다. 전자선 조사방법에 의한 전자만의 주입과 $Li^{+}$ 이온 주입 후 전자선 조사방법으로 전자들이 주입된 $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$의 열자극 발광 특성은 380K TL peak는 F center에, 440K TL peak는 $F^{+}$ center에 기인함을 보였다.

양성자 및 감마선처리에 의한 유채 유용형질의 변이계통 선발 (Selection of Mutant Lines with Useful Traits by Irradiation of Proton Ion Beams and Gamma Ray in Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.))

  • 유채(Brassica napus L.) '내한', '탐미', '한라' 등 3품종의 종자에 양성자 및 감마선을 0~2,000 Gy로 처리하여 조숙, 단간, 다수성 등 농경상 유용형질을 갖고 기름함량과 지방산 중 올레인산 함량이 높은 바이오디젤용 품종을 육성하고자 본 연구를 실시하였다. $M_5$세대까지 세대를 진전시키고 특성조사를 실시하여 고정성이 높고 농경형질이 우수한 조숙 단간 1 계통, 조숙 1계통, 단간 2계통과 대화 1계통, 엽록소변이 1계통을 선발하였는데, '내한' 품종에 양성자 600 Gy를 처리하여 선발한 NP600-1-1-198-2계통은 차별성, 균일성, 안정성 등이 인정되었다. NP600-1-1-198-2계통의 고유특성 중 엽형은 하부익상전렬이고 엽색은 농녹색, 줄기색은 녹색이며 꽃색은 황색, 종피색은 흑색이다. 개화기는 모품종보다 8일이 빠른 4월 14일, 성숙기는 5일이 빠른 6월 16일로 조숙이고, 경장은 105 cm로 10 cm가 짧아진 단간이다. 1수협수는 52개, 협장은 6.2 cm로 중간, 1협결실수는 23개로 많은 편이고 천립중은 4.2 g으로 무겁고 기름함량은 45.9%로 높다. 종실로 부터 추출한 기름의 oleic acid는 67.8%로 높으며, linoleic acid와 linolenic acid는 각각 16.7%, 7.3%로 낮았고, erucic acid는 없는 것으로 나타났다.
