IoT devices frequently require input resources to communicate with various sensors or IoT platforms. IoT device wastes a lot of time as idle time or waiting time to check the data of the input resource and use the input resource. In addition, IoT devices use various input resources. We compares and analyzes input idle time and input waiting time generated from hardware serial input resource, software serial input resource, digital port input resource, and analog port input resource using Arduino widely used as IoT device. In order to design the IoT device framework, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of input resources and to design them to minimize unnecessary input idle time and input waiting time. The analog input wait time has a much larger input wait time than the digital input wait time, so it must be designed to receive analog information periodically at the appropriate timing. The characteristics of the input resources analyzed in this way help to design an efficient IoT device.
Internet of Things (IoT), one of the emerging research areas, is the computing paradigm where various things connect to the network and cooperate with their neighbors to reach common goals. Computing with IoT devices opens up a new array of opportunities for providing value-added smart services and applications to end users. That is, IoT devices play an important role of providing useful services to the users. However, the states of IoT devices are dynamically changed at runtime, which come from their mobility, network connectivity, and a battery drain problem. This dynamism results in difficulties in managing these IoT devices. In this paper, we propose a framework to manage those IoT devices with dynamism. Hence, we first derive issues from IoT devices' dynamism. And, we define a set of requirements to manage the IoT devices and present a framework to manage the device dynamism. The framework is equipped by a device discovery method, a device status monitoring method, a device selection and connection method, and a device replacement method. Finally, we verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework through experiments.

With Internet of Things (IoT) technology, home environment becomes smarter than ever. Not only smart devices such as smart phone or smart TV, but also various IoT devices including sensor, smart thermostat, and smart scale has now become very common on the market. These devices have connectivity to the Internet, so that user can read data from the device or control the device using Internet technology. However, due to diversity of smart home requirements, device collaboration in smart home remains a challenging task still. Usually smart home is built with various technologies to fulfill its own purpose, and these purposes cover very wide area from controlling low-power sensor devices to controlling high-performance devices like smart TV and smart phone. This variety of smart home requirements makes smart home very complicated due to mixed network architecture, protocol and technology. In this paper, a framework to enable managing and collaborating heterogeneous IoT devices in smart home environment is proposed. Several programming models are defined in the proposed framework to make application development for heterogeneous devices more intuitive. The proposed framework has been implemented as a web service, and a case study with real-world smart home IoT devices is presented.
In Internet of Things (IoT) era, more diverse types of information are collected and the environment of information usage, distribution, and processing is changing. Recently, there have been a growing number of cases involving breach and infringement of personal information in IoT services, for examples, including data breach incidents of Web cam service or drone and hacking cases of smart connected car or individual monitoring service. With the evolution of IoT, concerns on personal information protection has become a crucial issue and thus the risk analysis and management method of personal information should be systematically prepared. This study shows risk factors in IoT regarding possible breach of personal information and infringement of privacy. We propose "a risk analysis framework of protecting personal information in IoT environments" consisting of asset (personal information-type and sensitivity) subject to risk, threats of infringement (device, network, and server points), and social impact caused from the privacy incident. To verify this proposed framework, we conducted risk analysis of IoT services (smart communication device, connected car, smart healthcare, smart home, and smart infra) using this framework. Based on the analysis results, we identified the level of risk to personal information in IoT services and suggested measures to protect personal information and appropriately use it.

To realize the vision of internet of things (IoT), where it is expected to bring significant impact to the global economy in the future, consideration of business models in the IoT context is necessary. This research attempts to build an enhanced artifact business model framework based on the definitions of IoT and literature on business models for analysis of IoT businesses. The framework is used to analyze four different types of players: the owner of things, vendors of devices, providers of connectivity and providers of IoT application services. The findings suggest that the owners of things tend to partner with ICT players to complement their weakness, and it tends to be connectivity providers. The device vendors leverage their strength of devices and device platforms to attract and enable 3rd party sensor/devices to interconnect, while the service providers are aiming to penetrate into customer premise. These lead to the following recommendations for non-IT players to consider in expanding into IoT business: 1) take into account differences in product development process between IT and non-IT businesses in expanding into IoT market; 2) collaborate with ICT players that acknowledge and understand the differences.

Due to the rapid growth and development of Internet of Things (IoT), various devices are now accessible and controllable anytime from anywhere. However, the current IoT system requires a series of complex steps (e.g., launch an application, choose a space and thing, control the thing, etc.) to control the IoT devices; therefore, IoT suffers from a lack of efficient and intuitive methods of interacting with users. To address this problem, we propose a novel IoT control framework based on IoT tags and social messages. The proposed system provides an intuitive and efficient way to control the device based on the device ownership: 1) users can easily control the device by IoT tagging, or 2) users can send an IoT social message to the device owner to request control of the tagged device. Through the development of the prototype system, we show that the proposed system provides an efficient and intuitive way to control devices in the IoT environment.

Sensors collect information for Internet of Things (IoT)-based services. However, indoor construction sites have a poor communication environment and many interfering elements that make it difficult to collect sensor information. In this study, a network was constructed between a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based IoT device based on a serverless IoT framework and a router. This experimental environment was applied to large- and small-scale indoor construction sites. Experiments were performed to test the communication performance of BLE-based IoT devices and routers at indoor construction sites. An analysis of the received signal strength indication (RSSI) graph patterns collected from the communication between the BLE-based IoT devices and routers for different testbed site situation revealed areas with good communication performance and poor communication performance due to interfering factors. The results confirmed that structural components of the building as well as the materials, equipment, and temporary facilities used in indoor construction interfere with the communication performance. Construction project managers will require improved technical knowledge of IoT, such as optimizing the router placement and matching communication between the router and workers, to improve the communication performance for large-scale indoor construction.
SMART home is one of the most popular applications of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, which is expanding in terms of range of applications. SMART home technology provides convenience at home by connecting household appliances to a single network, control, and management. However, many general home appliances do not support the network functions yet; hence, enjoying such convenient technology could be difficult, and it could be expensive in the beginning to build the framework. In addition, even though products with SMART home technologies are purchased, the control systems could differ from device to device. Thus, in this paper, we propose a SMART home framework, called an S-mote that can operate all the IoT functions in a single application by adding an infrared or radio frequency module to general home appliances. The proposed framework is analyzed using four types of performance tests by five evaluators. The results of the experiment show that the SMART home environment was implemented successfully and that it functions appropriately, without any operational issues, with various home appliances, including the latest IoT devices, and even those equipped with an infrared or radio frequency module.

With the rapid development of 5G technology, more and more network functions are interconnected and more popular. In order to effectively manage emerging network concepts, it allows any device object in the real world to be connected anywhere and at any time through the integration of device object recognition, interaction and raw data collection technologies. In addition, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an architecture framework for transmitting IP-based information to the device object which can be represented as end user. Therefore, the Internet of Things and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IoT-IMS) communication platform can provide a convenient and fast way for user or device objects to deploy new application services effectively. In particular, in order to collect and manage the device information from IoT effectively in the IoT-IMS communication platform, an IoT Information Gateway (IIG) is proposed. Through the IoT Application Service (AS) scenario, the collected device information can be easily observed and managed in a unified way.

With IoT device technology developments, such devices now can perceive the surrounding environment and operate upon the condition, but a method for efficiently processing an enormous amount of IoT device data is required. The existing cloud computing has a transmission delay problem due to load and distance. Fog Computing, an environment to control IoT devices, therefore, emerged to solve this problem. In Fog Computing, IoT devices are located close to each other to solve the shortcomings of the cloud system. While many earlier studies on Fog Computing for IoT mainly focus on its structure and framework, we would like to propose an integrated Fog Computing platform that monitors, analyzes, and controls IoT devices.
