The properties of GTA weld for ferritic stainless steel have been studied with different $O_2$ contents in Ar shielding gas at the constant welding speed. A small amount of $O_2$ (0.01~1.0%) was mixed in Ar shielding gas in order to improve the weld penetration. The fully penetrated GTA weld was acquired at 160A weld current shielded by pure Ar gas. Addition of oxygen larger than 0.1% made a full penetration at lower weld current than 160A. The small addition of $O_2$ in Ar shielding gas improved the penetration properties of GTA weld because the $O_2$ in the molten pool accelerated the flow of molten pool and changed the flow pattern from outward to inward direction. The impact energy and DBTT (Ductile- Brittle- Transition-Temperature) of the GTA weld shielded by Ar+$O_2$ (less 0.3%) was similar and the corrosion properties of GTA weld was slightly inferior to those of GTA weld shielded by pure Ar gas.
In this study, the effects of Elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication pressure on the critical shoulder height of raceway in an angular contact ball bearing were investigated. Both 3D contact analyses using an influence function and the EHL analysis were conducted for the contact geometry between the ball and raceways. The pressure distributions by 3D contact analysis and EHL analysis for an example bearing were compared. The effect of ellipse truncation on the minimum film thickness also investigated from EHL analysis. The critical shoulder height in the dry contact and the EHL state were compared for various applied loads. It is shown that when the ellipse truncation occurs, the pressure spike for the EHL conjunction is higher than that for the dry contact, and its location moves more inward of the contact center. The steep pressure gradients would increase the flow rate, so in order to maintain flow continuity a significant reduction in film thickness and an abrupt rise in pressure occurs in the edge of shoulder. Significant reduction of the minimum film thickness occurs near the edge of shoulder. The critical shoulder heights in the EHL state are calculated as higher values compared with in the dry contact. This results shows that the determination of critical shoulder height by the EHL analysis is more proper.
Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.
Impregnation of molten thermoplastic resin into continuous unidirectional fiber bundles was investigated. The degree of impregnation is defined as the ratio between the number of impregnated fibers and the total number of fibers of a bundle. The degree of impregnation was modeled as a function of time, impregnation pressure, temperature and tow size assuming the radial inward flow through the fiber bundle is governed by the Darcy's law. The permeability was assumed to be constant. Experiments were performed to evaluate the validity of the medel. Today's T300 graphite fiber bundles and Polyetheretherketone(PEEK) resin was used. A fiber bundle and resin powder were put into a mold and pressure and temperature were applied. After a predetermined time, the sample was taken out and microphotographs of the cross-section were taken. From the microphotographs, the number of impregnated fibers was counted and then the degree of impregnation was determined. Experiments were also performed for different tow sizes. Good agreements were found between the model and the experiments rendering a confidence in the model.

Flame propagation during the initial stages of ignition in a non-premixed swirl, having some of characteristics of the primary zone of an aero gas turbine combustor, has been investigated. Nd:YAG laser was adopted as the principal ignition source to allow arbitrary placing of the ignition site i subsequent flame development was monitored using a natural light high speed filming technique for many ignition site at two different swirl ratios and an overall equivalence ratio of 0.9. For ignition offset from the burner centreline, buoyancy force associated with radial pressure gradient produced a strong inward movement of the flame kernel. At the burner exit. flame kernels invariably developed into cylindrical form and a 'radial confinement /axia expansion' (RCAE) process was observed.

This paper presents the performance characteristics of a Darrieus-type vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) with National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) airfoil blades. To estimate the optimum shape of the Darrieus-type wind turbine in accordance with various design parameters, we examine the aerodynamic characteristics and separated flow occurring in the vicinity of the blade, the interaction between the flow and blade, and the torque and power characteristics that are derived from it. We consider several parameters (chord length, rotor diameter, pitch angle, and helical angle) to determine the optimum shape design and characteristics of the interaction with the ambient flow. From our results, rotors with high solidity have a high power coefficient in the low tip-speed ratio (TSR) range. On the contrary, in the low TSR range, rotors with low solidity have a high power coefficient. When the pitch angle at which the airfoil is directed inward equals $-2^{\circ}$ and the helical angle equals $0^{\circ}$, the Darrieus-type VAWT generates maximum power.
This paper represents axial mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and swirl number based on momentum flux measured in the X-Y plane and Y-Z plane respectively of a cone type gas swirl burner by using X-probe from the hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rates 350 and $450{\ell}/min$ respectively, which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary for heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in gas furnace, in the test section of a subsonic wind tunnel. Axial mean velocities and turbulent kinetic energies show that their maximum values exist centering around narrow slits situated radially on the edge of and in the forefront of a burner until $X/R{\fallingdotseq}1.5$, but they have a peculiar shape like a starfish diffusing and developing into inward and outward of a burner by means of the mixing between flows ejected from narrow slits, an inclination baffle plate and swirl vanes respectively according to downstream regions. Moreover, they show a relatively large value in the inner region of 0.5$S_m$ obtained by integration of velocity profiles shows a characteristic that has an inflection point composing of the maximum and minimum value until X/R<3, but shows close agreement with the geometric swirl number after a distance of X/R=3.

For an asymmetric scroll compressor for heat pump application, a numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the effects of injection port design on the compressor's performance under gas injection. To validate the simulation, the numerical results were compared with experimental results obtained from a scroll compressor with a base injection port design. There was good agreement between simulation and experimental results, with around a 1% difference in the injection mass flow rate when the injection pressure was below $12kgf/cm^2A$ for the heating mode. Various injection port angular positions were numerically tested to yield better injection performance. The largest improvement in heating capacity was obtained at angles of $240^{\circ}$ and $200^{\circ}$ inward from the scroll wrap end angle for low-temperature and standard heating conditions, respectively, while the maximum COP improvement was at $365^{\circ}$ and $280^{\circ}$, respectively. A considerable improvement in cooling capacity was also found at the injection port angle of $240^{\circ}$.

This study examines the effect of acoustic excitation using forced coaxial air on the flame characteristics of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. A resonance frequency was selected to acoustically excite the coaxial air jet due to its ability to effectively amplify the acoustic amplitude and reduce flame length and NOx emissions. Acoustic excitation causes the flame length to decrease by 15 % and consequently, a 25 % reduction in EINOx is achieved, compared to a flame without acoustic excitation. Moreover, acoustic excitation induces periodical fluctuation of the coaxial air velocity, thus resulting in slight fluctuation of the fuel velocity. From phase-lock PIV and OH PLIF measurement, the local flow properties at the flame surface were investigated under acoustic forcing. During flame-vortex interaction in the near field region, the entrainment velocity and the flame surface area increased locally near the vortex. This increase in flame surface area and entrainment velocity is believed to be a crucial factor in reducing flame length and NOx emission in coaxial jet flames with acoustic excitation. Local flame extinction occurred frequently when subjected to an excessive strain rate, indicating that intense mass transfer of fuel and air occurs radially inward at the flame surface.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD in short) approach is now playing an important role in the engineering process recently. Generating proper grid system for the region of interest in time is prerequisite for the efficient numerical calculation of flow physics using CFD approach. Grid generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine and successful application of numerical approaches in the engineering process. CFD approach based on the unstructured grid system is gaining popularity due to its simplicity and efficiency for generating grid system compared to the structured grid approaches. In this paper an automated triangular surface grid generation using CAD surface data is proposed According to the present method, the CAD surface data imported in the STL format is processed to identify feature edges defining the topology and geometry of the surface shape first. When the feature edges are identified, node points along the edges are distributed. The initial fronts which connect those feature edge nodes are constructed and then they are advanced along the CAD surface data inward until the surface is fully covered by triangular surface grid cells using Advancing Front Method. It is found that this approach can be implemented in an automated way successfully saving man-hours and reducing human-errors in generating triangular surface grid system.
