  • No one doubts that textile and apparel industries have contributed to economic miracles of the export-led growth in Korea. However, by the turning of 1990′s, these sectors have encountered many problems such as decreasing of domestic production and exports mainly due to wage rise and shortage. Therefore, foreign direct investment to the low labor cost countries has been enlarged for a way of improving its competitiveness and increasing exports. However, no intensive study has been made exploring current investments and future directions. This study focuses Vietnam as one of the promising overseas investment countries. The purposes of this study are to analyze current investment status of Korean textiles and apparel firms in Vietnam, to explore merits and problems Vietnam has, and to present useful implications and strategies for Korean textiles and apparel companies. Analysis of current secondary data suggests that Korean apparel industry, rather than textiles industry, have invested more in Vietnam, mostly in southern Ho Chi Minh City. Investments of Korean apparel and textile firms have shown steady increase from 1990 but have turned to a decrease from 1995. Findings suggested that Vietnam has merits for attracting foreign investment since it provides relatively cheap labor and outstanding skillful hands suitable for apparel and textiles industries. In addition, because of EU quota increase and the trade agreement between Vietnam and USA it is likely for firms in Vietnam to increase exports to EU and USA Rapid expansion of domestic apparel market and "Korean trend (Han Rue)" in Vietnam resulted from successful star marketing of Korean firms are another merits Vietnam has to the Korean fm. However, regulations of central government, low efficiency of bureaucratic and stiff administrative process, difficulty of making decision in case of joint venture, lack of social overhead capital, high factory construction costs, weak construction condition, and the excessive competition among investment enterprises have found to be problems. Based on pros and cons of investment to Vietnam, marketing strategies, practical implications and future directions were suggested.

  • It is generally accepted that the momentum strategies are effective in the short-term, and the contrarian strategies are profitable in the long run in major stock markets in the world. In Korean market, however, the contrarian is considered effective investment strategy both in the short- and long-term. We investigate whether this is true after 1999, and try to find out the reasons for this phenomena. We found that the contrarian strategies are still effective. Foreign investors showed consistent investment behavior both in Korean and abroad: they followed momentum in the short-tem, and contrarian in the longer-term. The individual investors, who are thought to be noise trader, showed different behavior. They followed contrarian strategies both in the short-and long-term. The reason that the contrarian is observed in Korean market regardless of the investment horizon is thought to be the irrtional behavior of individual investors.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of working capital policy and strategy on a firm's performance including profitability and market value. By applying One-Sample T-Test, working capital investment and financing policies were classified into the three sub-policies and strategies: aggressive, moderate, and conservative, unlike previous studies using two sub- policies and strategies. The results showed that the SET-listed companies in all seven industry sectors primarily adopted an aggressive working capital investment policy and a conservative working capital financing policy, so-called as moderate working capital management strategy (MWS), at 49.40%. While the firms adopted and conservative working capital management strategy (CWS), 45.70%, followed by the aggressive working capital management strategy (AWS), at 4.90%. When examining the impacts among three-sub policies and strategies on a firm's performance, it was found that the conservative working capital financing policy led to the highest profitability and market value in all industry sectors. The findings also revealed that the aggressive strategy has no impact on a firm's performance in terms of profitability and market value.

Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the case of Uzbekistan, and to determine the strategies that can be implemented to increase the competitiveness in attracting foreign investment. Research design, data and methodology: To investigate the FDI environment and identify effective strategies, Global RPM and QSPM analyses were conducted in addition to in-depth interviews with experts. In particular, this study uses the method of Global RPM analysis to make a comprehensive evaluation and analysis on globalization, rationality, and professionalism and morality dimensions of FDI in Uzbekistan. Results: According to the analysis, the conditions of political situation, financial stability, legal frameworks, as well as economic environment of the country play a significant role in bringing in FDIs from abroad. Moreover, based on the results, Uzbekistan scored lowest on globalization, indicating that the country has a low level of integration and openness to the global economy and society. Conclusions: Uzbekistan can boost its productive capacity and GDP growth with FDI, but it has to overcome many structural and logistical obstacles. Furthermore, adhering to the chosen strategies, policymakers can leverage FDI to stimulate economic growth, leading to the generation of new jobs and expanded opportunities in Uzbekistan.

  • When we consider a life insurance company that sells a large number of continuous T-year term life insurance policies, it is important to find an optimal strategy which maximizes the surplus of the insurance company at time T. The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit expression for the optimal reinsurance and investment strategy which maximizes the expected exponential utility of the final value of the surplus at the end of T-th year. To do this we solve the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation.

  • We investigate the optimal consumption and investment decision problem of an agent whose time preference is time-inconsistent. Specifically, for a time-separable utility function, the agent's subjective discount factor is supposed to be changed randomly in the future. We provide closed-form solutions in the presence of income process. The method can be extended into the case with a stochastic income process.

  • This study explores modern portfolio theory by integrating the Black-Litterman portfolio with time-series clustering, specificially emphasizing K-shape clustering methodology. K-shape clustering enables grouping time-series data effectively, enhancing the ability to plan and manage investments in stock markets when combined with the Black-Litterman portfolio. Based on the patterns of stock markets, the objective is to understand the relationship between past market data and planning future investment strategies through backtesting. Additionally, by examining diverse learning and investment periods, it is identified optimal strategies to boost portfolio returns while efficiently managing associated risks. For comparative analysis, traditional Markowitz portfolio is also assessed in conjunction with clustering techniques utilizing K-Means and K-Means with Dynamic Time Warping. It is suggested that the combination of K-shape and the Black-Litterman model significantly enhances portfolio optimization in the stock market, providing valuable insights for making stable portfolio investment decisions. The achieved sharpe ratio of 0.722 indicates a significantly higher performance when compared to other benchmarks, underlining the effectiveness of the K-shape and Black-Litterman integration in portfolio optimization.
