  • Venture capitalists (VCs) play an important role in finding and growing innovative venture companies with high growth potential but high risk. Venture capital investment does not depend on the system, unlike the investment for listed companies. Korea's venture capital industry has entered a period of growth, but lack of data has led to a lack of research on venture capital. Based on this background, this study attempts to analyze various factors affecting investment decision criteria of Korea VCs. In this study, I examined the major factors that VCs consider in decision making of investment through literature review, and I have drawn the research question accordingly. I will focus on the characteristics of founders, products / services, markets, financials, and networks that scholars share common investment decision criteria in Korean VCs. For the purpose of this study, the data were collected through the questionnaire surveyed by investment vetters working in current venture capital and analyzed using AHP analysis. Through this study, I tried to understand the Korean venture capital which has been poorly studied and what criteria and priorities Korean VCs make investment decisions in the Korean venture investment environment. The results of this research will contribute to the vitalization of venture investment, which is important for the upbringing of companies, by providing guidelines for establishing investment attraction strategies of venture companies.

  • The performance of US economy in the last cecade is considered to be driven by the IT investment. However, the causal relationship has not been conclsive between IT investment and economic performance, which makes a decision in IT investment tricky. IT as a growth strategy is critical to the developing countries which experienced resource constraint. In case IT acts as a driving force in the new technology paradigm, the less investment in IT will continue to which the growth gap between countries. When IT dose not make a significant contribution to growth, heavy investment in IT means misallocations of resources. Therfore a decision on IT investment has critical implication in terms of growth strategy. Based on a growth accounting nethod, the current study is to analyse the contribution of IT

  • We investigate the association between tax strategy and investment efficiency focusing on manager's investment decision. Specifically, we examine the effect of manager's tax avoidance on the firm's investment level. The result show that as the degree of tax avoidance becomes higher firm's over investment increases. This result implies that the available resources generated from firm's tax avoidance induces over investment. Prior researches have been interested in the effects of firm's tax strategy on firm value. However, there is little literatures regarding the effects of firm's tax strategy on management's real investment decisions which provides the important implications about the mechanisms between tax strategy and firm value. In this respect, our research provides a meaningful results which demonstrates the effects of firm's tax strategy on manager's real investment decisions. This will provide useful implications for the investors and government regarding manager's tax avoidance behavior.

  • This study is aimed to establish an investment decision model for offshore aquaculture project of rock bream in Korea using a certainty equivalent method (CEM) based on the expected utility theory and to investigate its economic viability under risk and uncertainty. In the analysis with CEM, the effects of risk attitude and risk level on investment and risk premium were examined and the impacts of various risk and uncertainty factors on the investment decision were also assessed. In addition, the outcomes were compared to those evaluated by the traditional net present value (NPV) method. Results show that risk premium grew as the investors became more risk averse and uncertainty level (the variance of NPV) increased. Consequently, the certainty equivalent value was predicted to decrease from the value assessed by the traditional NPV method.

  • This study examines the stability and excellence of portfolio investment strategies based on the accounting information of the Korean stock market. In the process of constructing the portfolio, various combinations of financial ratios are used to select the stocks with high expected return and to measure their performance. We also tried to improve our investment performance by using genetic algorithm optimization. The results of this study show that portfolio strategies using accounting information are effective for investment decision making and can achieve high investment performance. We also verify that portfolio strategy using genetic algorithms can be effective for investment decision making.

  • Recently, venture capital investment has been shrinking globally due to high interest rates and economic slowdown. Korea is no exception. Due to the downturn in the M&A and public markets, increasing economic uncertainty, and the aftermath of corporate bankruptcies, venture capitalists are facing many difficulties in raising funds. In the changed economic environment, the investment decision factors of venture capitalists have also changed. However, studies on VCs' investment decisions have focused on the general economic environment. This study examines how VCs' investment decision-making factors change during economic recessions and booms. To this end, we interviewed active investors who have experienced both economic recessions and booms to compare how VCs' investment decision factors change: 1) personal characteristics of founders, 2) experience of founders, 3) product/service, 4) market, 5) financial situation, 6) contract terms and 7) venture capital co-investment. The results showed that founder's personal characteristics, experience, and product/service were more important during the economic recession. Market is slightly more important during economic booms. The importance of financial situation and investment conditions increased sharply during the recession compared to the boom. Finally, venture capital co-investment did not differ significantly between recessions and booms. By understanding the investment decision-making factors of venture capitalists in the recent difficult venture investment environment, this study aims to help startups raise funds and survive in a difficult market.

  • The present study attempts to build a decision making model for social enterprise investment. The proposed model includes four factors; social compatibility, growth, profitability, stability, and organizational suitability. Thirteen social enterprise investors were requested to rate the importance of each of the four factors when they make investment decisions. Financial stability (25.8%) and social compatibility(25.7%) turned out to be most important followed by profitability(17.5%) and growth(17.1%). Organizational suitability(13.9%) was least important. This study uncovered the first empirical factors for social enterprise investment decision making in the early stage of exploratory research. In practice, also provided several implications to social entrepreneurs, investors and policy makers.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze whether the disposition effect, a behavioral finance theory, exists in decision-making for ship investment. A case study was adopted as the research methodology, and data obtained through narrative and questionnaire responses on decision-making for ship sales were analyzed from a behavioral finance perspective. The analysis found that the disposition effect had an impact on the decision to sell a vessel. The narrative responses revealed that some shipping companies tended to miss the opportunity to maximize ship sale profit because they sold their vessels readily and quickly before the price of the vessels had risen sufficiently. The questionnaire survey results indicated that the majority of the survey respondents chose to sell a ship whose price had risen slightly from the initial purchase price. Managers in charge of ship investment should examine whether the disposition effect exists in their decision-making when selling a ship.

  • The influencing factors of large-scale IT investment decisions are rarely investigated in an empirical perspective. We find out different behaviors in IT investment decisions according to the size of organization. Large scale IT-investment decisions (e.g. system downsizing) can be the outcome of decision-makers' motivation to adopt and control new IT systems- However, this phenomenon is salient in the large-sized organization rather than small-sized ones. Based on our investigation, we predict general IT decision-making behaviors in organizations when making IT investment decisions.
