Line-interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are good candidates for providing energy storage within a microgrid. In this paper, a control scheme for a line-interactive UPS system applied in a low-voltage microgrid is presented. It is based on the Q-w and P-E droop control to achieve a seamless transition between grid-connected and stand-alone operation modes. Moreover, a new model for designing the controllers is built in the dq-frame based on the instantaneous power definition. The new-built model takes into account the dynamic performance of the output impedance of the inverter in the dq-frame and can be evaluated in the time domain. Compared to the traditional model based on the instantaneous power definition, the new-built model is more accurate to describe the dynamic performance of the system. Simulation and experimental results obtained with a microgrid consisting of two 40-kW line-interactive UPS systems are given to validate the control strategy of the line-active UPS system and the accuracy of the new-built model.

Based on the inherent relationship between dc-bus voltage and grid feeding active power, two dc-bus voltage regulators with different references are adopted for a grid-connected PV inverter operating in both normal grid voltage mode and low grid voltage mode. In the proposed scheme, an additional dc-bus voltage regulator paralleled with maximum power point tracking controller is used to guarantee the reliability of the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) of the inverter. Unlike conventional LVRT strategies, the proposed strategy does not require detecting grid voltage sag fault in terms of realizing LVRT. Moreover, the developed method does not have switching operations. The proposed technique can also enhance the stability of a power system in case of varying environmental conditions during a low grid voltage period. The operation principle of the presented LVRT control strategy is presented in detail, together with the design guidelines for the key parameters. Finally, a 3 kW prototype is built to validate the feasibility of the proposed LVRT strategy.
In this paper, UPS, with a built-in instantaneous sag drop compensation features, was developed to improve performance. The improved UPS, using instantaneous moving average method, compensates by quickly measuring the voltage and series inverter of half-bridge type, using line-interactive method that links with the voltage of the battery and power source, was developed. In addition, by developing a parallel inverter that uses a high-efficiency PWM switching method, overall UPS system was enhanced. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, single-phase 5[kVA] UPS systems were designed and the experimental system was constructed. The low-cost type of Cortex-M3 module CPU STM32F103R8T6 (32[bit]) is attached and the switching time of mode transfer was set within 4 [ms]. THD of the linear load operates in less than 3[%], and the stability of the output voltage operates in approximately ${\pm}2[%]$ range. The superior performance of the operations was confirmed with the system set as above.
The analysis of the switch status of each unit module of a cascaded multi-level inverter reveals that the working condition of the switch of a chopper arm causes unnecessary switching under the conventional unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). With an increase in the number of cascaded multilevel inverters, the superposition of unnecessary switching gradually occurs. In this work, we propose an improved SPWM strategy to reduce switching in cascaded multilevel inverters. Specifically, we analyze the switch state of the switch tube of a chopper arm of an H-bridge unit. The redundant switch is then removed, thereby reducing the switching frequency. Unlike the conventional unipolar SPWM technique, the improved SPWM method greatly reduces switching without altering the output quality of inverters. The conventional unipolar SPWM technique and the proposed method are applied to a five-level inverter. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed strategy. Finally, a prototype is built in the laboratory. Experimental results verify the correctness of the proposed modulation strategy.
This paper proposes a grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system, consisting of Voltage-fed dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter with single phase inverter. The proposed converter allows a small dc-link capacitor, so that system reliability can be improved by replacing electrolytic capacitors with film capacitors. The double line frequency free maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is also realized in the proposed converter by using Ripple Correlation method. First of all, to eliminate the double line frequency ripple which influence the reduction of DC source capacitance, control is developed. Then, a designing of Current control in DQ frame is analyzed and to fulfill the international harmonics standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547, $3^{rd}$ harmonic in the grid is directly compensated by the feedforward terms generated by the PR controller with the grid current in stationary frame to achieve desire Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). 5-kW PV converter and inverter module with a small dc-link film capacitor was built in the laboratory with the proposed control and MPPT algorithm. Experimental results are given to validate the converter performance.
MM(multimode) PWM(pulse width modulation) Suitable for high performance and harmonic effects minimization of VSI (voltabge source invertetr)-IM (induction motor)drive system is proposed. The approximated optimal, suboptimal and optimal PWM are implemented in the low frequency range, while square wave operation is realized in the hibh frequency range. The pulse width Modulator is capable of generating control signals to a transistorized inverter operating at about 1KHz. All functions except digital comparison have been implemented in softyware making the scheme economical, flexible and reliable. Pulse width modulator is built and tested experimentally. In order to confirm the effectiveness and the reliability of the theoretical proposition, this scheme is applied to 1Hp, Three phase IM. As results, it is concluded that the scheme of MM PWM is superior to other conventional switching scheme through the discussions or analysis carried out on the items such as line-to-line voltage, current and spectrum of current harmonic components observed at the output terminal of inverter, noise level of motor.

In an effort to conserve electric power, variable voltage variable frequency pulse width modulated (PWM) inverters are being applied increasingly to the variable speed control of the induction motors. The use of the PWM technique in motor drive applications is considered advantageous in many ways. For industrial applications, the PWM drive obtains its DC input through simple uncontrolled rectification of the commercial AC line and is favored for its good power factor, good efficiency, its relative freedom regulation problem, and mainly for its ability to operate the motor with nearly sinusoidal current waveforms. The purpose of this paper is to design a three phase natural sampled PWM inverter using microprocessor with simple control algorithm and hybrid control circuit has been built to implement this PWM scheme. In this system, the microprocessor can be used only for calculations directly related to motor control tasks by the design of hybrid circuit which sends PWM signals to the motor.
A power quality improvement scheme for grid connected inverters, even in the presence of the disturbances in grid voltages due to harmonic distortions and three-phase imbalance, is presented for distributed generation (DG) power systems. The control objective is to force the inverter currents to follow their references with robustness even under external disturbances in grid voltages. The proposed scheme is realized by a disturbance observer (DOB) based current control scheme. Since the uncertainty in a system can be effectively canceled out using an estimated disturbance by the DOB, the resultant system behaves like a closed-loop system consisting of a disturbance-free nominal model. For experimental verification, a 2 kVA laboratory prototype of a grid connected inverter has been built using a digital signal processor (DSP) TMS320F28335. Through comparative simulations and experimental results under grid disturbances such as harmonic distortion and imbalance, the effectiveness of the proposed DOB based current control scheme is demonstrated.
The pumping of electric power from photovoltaic (PV) farms is normally carried out using transformers, which require heavy mounting structures and are thus costly, less efficient, and bulky. Therefore, transformerless schemes are developed for the injection of power into the grid. Compared with the H4 inverter topology, the H6 topology is a better choice for pumping PV power into the grid because of the reduced common mode current. This paper presents how the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) can be implemented in the H6 inverter topology along with the improved sinusoidal current injected to the grid at unity power factor with the average current mode control technique. On the basis of the P&O MPPT algorithm, a power reference for the present insolation level is first calculated. Maintaining this power reference and referring to the AC sine wave of bus bars, a sinusoidal current at unity power factor is injected to the grid. The proportional integral (PI) controller and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are designed and implemented. The FLC outperforms the PI controller in terms of conversion efficiency and injected power quality. A simulation in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment is carried out. An experimental prototype is built to validate the proposed idea. The dynamic and steady-state performances of the FLC controller are found to be better than those of the PI controller. The results are presented in this paper.
