Viscosity Change of Polysaccharide, Methylan by Acids Content (다당류 메틸란의 산 성분 함량에 따른 점도의 변화)

  • The chemical identities of purified polysaccharide, methylan, were analyzed by various chemical methods. The polysaccharide contained 79%(w/w) sugar, 6% protein, and 16% organic acids such as uronic acid, pyruvic acid, and acetic acid. With proceeding fermentation, the acids content in methylan increased from 10% at 34 hr to 17% at 72 hr, and the viscosity of methylan in the same concentration also increased. The correlation between viscosity and acid content in methylan was studied using chemically or biologically modified methylan. Methylan with a high content of pyruvic acid exhibited a high apparent and an intrinsic ·viscosity. When the pyruvic acid content of methylan with the same content of uronic acid was increased 1%, apparent viscosity and intrinsic viscosity increased 290 cp and 6 dL/g, respectively. Methylan with a high content of uronic acid exhibited a high apparent and an intrinsic viscosity. When the uronic acid content of methylan with the same content of pyruvic acid was increased 1%, apparent viscosity and intrinsic viscosity increased 85 cp and 1.5 dL/g, respectively. It was found that the increased viscosity of methylan resulted from the increased content of organic acids in methylan, and pyruvic acid was more an important factor contributed to the increase of methylan viscosity than uronic acid.

  • The anionic polymerization of ${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam with N,N'-adipyl-bis-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam as an initiator and potassium hydroxide as a catalyst was studied under various conditions.It was found that concentration of catalyst and initiator was 4.2 and 1.6 mole %, and polymerization temperature of 130$^{\circ}C$C, polymerization time of 1.5 hours was the optimum condition. The intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight of the obtained polymer was over 0.9 dl/g and 12,000. The polymerization was carried out in the presence of N-acyl-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam as an initiator, it was observed that the reactivity of N,N'-adipyl-bis-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam was greater than both of the N-benzoyl-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam and N-acetyl-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactam. In general it was also observed that the intrinsic viscosity and yield of conversion was increased as an increasing of concentration of catalyst and initiator and also highly depend on temperature.

Effect of Molecular Weight and NaCI Concentration on Dilute Solution Properties of Chitosan

  • Solution Properties of polyelectrolytic biopolymers such as chitosen, pectin, alginate and etc. are significantly influenced by molecular weight and salt concentrations. The effect of NaCI concentration on the hydrodynamic properties of chitosan in dilute region was investigated for chitosans of varying molecular weight. Intrinsic vicosity([η]) of citosans with 5 different molecular weight was determined by glass capillary viscometer, and the viscosity average molecular weight was calculated using Mark-Houwink equation. Intrinsic viscosity decreased with increasing NaCI concentration for all chitosan samples, and it was proportional to the logarithmic NaCI concentration, i.e.,[η]∝log{TEX}$(C_{NaCl})^{$\alpha$}${/TEX}. Decreasing trend of[η] with NaCI concentration became more pronounced with increasing molecular weight. It was also found that the a values, indicating {TEX}$C_{NaCl}${/TEX} dependence of[η], were linearly correlated with the logarithmic molecular weight({TEX}$R^{2}${/TEX}=0.980). The chain stiffness parameters(B) were calculated by B=S./{TEX}$([η]_{0.1})^{1.32}${/TEX}, in which S was obtained from slope of [η] va {TEX}$I^{-1/2}${/TEX}. The B values of chitosan samples were determined to be 0.113~0071 with a average of 0.09.

Comparison of Gelatinization Properties of Japonica and Tongil Brown Rice Starches (일반계와 통일계 현미전분의 호화성질 비교)

  • Intrinsic viscosity and gelatinization properties of brown rice starches of Japonica and Tonsil type cultivars were investigated. The intrinsic viscosity was similar between the two cultivars. The gelatinization temperature of Japonica brown rice starch determined by differential scanning calorimetry was higher than that of Tonsil brown rice starch. However, the range of gelatinization temperature, gelatinization enthalpy and the water content for gelatinization were similar between the two starches. The treatment of starch at 6$0^{\circ}C$ for 24hr increased the gelatinization temperature and gelatinization enthalpy and decreased the range of geltinization temperature. The water content for gelatinization was negatively correlated with the range of gelatinization temperature in case of Japonica starch and with the intrinsic viscosity in case of Tonsil one. The in-trinsic viscosities of both Japonica and Tonsil starches were positively correlated with gelatinization enthalpy.

  • High shear viscosity at several solids levels was measured for a number of pigment slurries and coating colors containing either anionic or amphoteric latex and analyzed according to Mooney and Eiler equations. Maximum packing fraction and intrinsic viscosity were obtained and compared. Eiler equation provides more credible information than Mooney equation on particle packing and intrinsic viscosity. The packing fraction obtained from Eiler equation was slightly greater than that obtained from static FCC measurement indicating the influence of pigment movement under the dynamic condition. Amphoteric latex caused 4-5% increase of maximum packing fraction of a coating color when its pH is lowered from 7 to 6, while anionic latex did not show any significant change in packing characteristics.

When the value of the exponent, a, appearing in the relation between the intrinsic viscosity and the viscosity average molecular weight, is in the range from 0.6 to 0.8, as is the case for the most polymers, the viscosity average molecular weight is much more close to the weight average molecular weight than to the number average molecular weight.

Degradation of Alginate Solution by Using ${\gamma}-Irradiation$ and Organic Acid (감마선과 유기산을 이용한 알긴산 용액의 저분자화에 대한 연구)

  • Alginates were irradiated in an aqueous solution with $Co^{60}$ gamma rays in the dose ranges from 0 to 100 kGy, and investigated the relationship between the intrinsic viscosity $([{\eta}])$ and the molecular weight $(M_w)$ of alginates. The molecular weight of alginate was measured by gel permeation chromatography and the ranges from 1,894 to 135,174 Da were obtained. The molecular weight of alginate decreased markedly with increasing the degree of ${\gamma}-ray$ dose rate. The intrinsic viscosity of alginate solution after ${\gamma}-irradiation$ showed the ranges from 9.83 (g/g) to 602.69 (g/g), depending upon the ${\gamma}-irradiation$ dose. The molecular weight of alginate dependence of the intrinsic viscosity of the alginate solution would be expressed by Mark-Houwink equation. With a linearization of molecular weight and the intrinsic viscosity of the alginate solution, Mark-Houwink equation could be expressed with constant variables and the real data fitted to the equation of $[{\eta}]=2.2{\times}10^{-6}\;{M_w}^{1.656}\;(R^2=0.998)$.

  • GM 은 Amorphopallus Konjac K. Koch의 tuber의 주성분으로알카리 응고제를 첨가 함에 따라 열적으로 안정한 gel을 형성한다. GM에 침전제로 메탄올을 사용하여 4단계로 분 별하였고 각 분별물(F.1, F.2, F.3, F.4)들은 Mark-Houwink 식을 이용하여 분자량을 산출하 였다. Ubbelohde를 이용한 농도에 따른 환산점도로부터 고유 점성도값을 구한 결과 분자량 이 높은 분별물이 분자량이 낮은 분별물에 비하여 직선으로부터 벗어남을 알수 있었다. 또 한 고유점성도는 분자량이 증가할수록 증가하였고, 분자량 분포 범위가 broad하게 나타났다. GM용액의 frequency와 shear rate에 따른 viscosity를 측정한결과 낮은 frequency에서는 loss modulus(G")가 storage modulus(G")보다 큰 값을 가졌으나 높은 frequency에서는 G '가 G"보다 크게 나타났다. 이 현상은 분자들의 얽힘에 관한 시간 의존도로써 설명할수 있다. 즉높은 frequency에서는 탄소 사슬간의 얽힘들이 진동기간내에 분자결합이 끊어지기 에 충분한 시간을 갖지 못하여 그 조직이 교차 결합을 한 gel처럼 행동하게 되고 한편 낮은 frequency에서는 탄소사슬들의 얽힘이 풀리고 흐르기에 충분한 시간을 갖게된다. Shear rate에 따른 viscosity값과 frequency에 대한 dynamic viscosity값은 거의 유사한 변화를 나 타내었다.

  • Rheological characterization was examined for two different types of magenetic particle (rod-like $\gamma$-$Fe_{2}O_{3}$, $CrO_2$ )suspension in this study. The measured suspension viscosity (viscosity vs. concentration or shear rate) is used to obtain the dependence of viscous energy dissipation on the microstructural states of magnetic particle dispersions as well as the microstructural shape effects which are related to magnetic particle orientation. The empirical formulas from mean field theory and the Mooney equation are used to relate suspension viscosity to particle concentration. Intrinsic viscosities of these two different types of rod-like magnetic particle suspensions are found to exceed the prediction of hydrodynamic theory for dilute suspensions and support the existence of flocs containing significant amounts of immobilized suspending medium due to native attraction forces among particles in the microstructures.

  • In this study, the numerical investigation of the non-linear behavior of the fluid flow with physical properties, such as porosity and intrinsic permeability of a porous medium, and kinematic viscosity of a fluid, are carried out. The applied numerical model is ANSYS CFX which is the three-dimensional fluid dynamics model and this model is verified through the application of existing physical and numerical results. As a result of the verification, the results of the pressure gradient-velocity relationship and the friction coefficient-Reynolds number relationship produced from this study show relatively good agreement with those from existing physical and numerical experiments. As a result of the simulation by changing the porosity and intrinsic permeability of a porous medium and the kinematic viscosity of a fluid, the kinematic viscosity has the biggest effect on the non-linear behavior of the fluid flow in the porous medium.
