Aromatic copolyamides were prepared and their applicability to proton exchange membrane was studied. The copolymers contain two segments; thermally stable and mechanically strong poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA), and easily processable and good film-forming polysulfone. For the copolymers, different ratios of amine-terminated sulfonated ether sulfone monomer, terephthaloyl chloride, and p-phenylene diamine were sequentially reacted. The obtained copolymers were mixed with trimethylolpropane triglycidyl ether (TMPTGE), thermally cured, and converted into proton exchange membranes for fuel cell application. The reactions at each step and the molecular characteristics of precursor copolymers were confirmed by $^1H$ NMR, FTIR, and titration. The performance of the membranes was measured in terms of water uptake and proton conductivity. The water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC), and proton conductivity of the membranes increased with the increase of sulfonated ether sulfone segment content. Membrane containing 60 mol% sulfonic acid sulfone segment showed 1.88 meq/g IEC value. Water uptake was limited less than 110 wt% and the highest proton conductivity was up to $7.4{\times}10^{-2}$ S/cm ($25^{\circ}C$, RH=100%).

In this work, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was added into diethylenetriamine (DETA) aqueous solution for high $CO_2$ loading via phase splitting of absorbents during $CO_2$ absorption. Immiscible two phases were formed in the range of more than 30 wt% of NMP in 2 M DETA + NMP + water absorbents because of low solubility of DETA-carbamate in NMP solution. As the composition of NMP in the absorbents increased, the difference of $CO_2$ loading between each phase increased and the volume of bottom phase decreased. In $CO_2$ absorption in packed column by 2 M DETA + NMP + water absorbents, the absorption rate decreased in the range of more than 40 wt% of NMP. It is due to the increasing of mass transfer resistance in liquid film of absorbents at the high concentration of NMP. DETA + NMP + water absorbent is expected as the promising one for reducing the regeneration energy of absorbents according to volume reduction of $CO_2-rich$ phase.
BACKGROUND: 'Shiranuhi' mandarin is a major cultivar among all late ripening type of citrus, and is widely cultivated in Korea. However, many farmers have reported scion root problems in their orchard resulting in reduced flowering and fruiting. It is necessary that the physiology of scion-rooted 'Shiranuhi' mandarin trees is further understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: This experiment was conducted to understand the growth response and physiology of scion-rooted 'Shiranuhi' mandarin hybrids. In our study, 'Shiranuhi' mandarin trees were divided into two groups: trees without scion roots (control) and trees with scion roots. The experiment was conducted in Seogwipo of Jeju, with ten replicates for each group. Growth of trees with scion roots was more vigorous and the trees were taller than the controls. Tree height and trunk diameter of scion-rooted trees were significantly higher than those of control trees. Exposed length of rootstocks of scion-rooted trees was significantly lower (by about 2 cm) than that of control trees (8.6 cm). In terms of root nutrition, carbon contents of scion-rooted trees was significantly lower than that of control trees, but nitrogen and potassium concentrations in scion roots were significantly higher than those in control roots. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, we infer that growth of scion-rooted trees was very vigorous and the content of nitrogen in these roots was higher than that in the control tree roots. Thus, the carbon/nitrogen ratio of scion roots was significantly lower than that of the control roots.
In 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), many studies on reducing setup error have been conducted in order to focus the irradiation on the tumors while sparing normal tissues as much as possible. As one of these efforts, we developed an image enhancement and registration tool for simulators and portal images that analyze setup errors in a quantitative manner. For setup verification, we used simulator (films and EC-L films (Kodak, USA) as portal images. In addition, digital-captured images during simulation, and digitally-reconstructed radiographs (DRR) can be used as reference images in the software, which is coded using IDL5.4 (Research Systems Inc., USA). To improve the poor contrast of portal images, histogram-equalization, and adaptive histogram equalization, CLAHE (contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization) was implemented in the software. For image registration between simulator and portal images, contours drawn on the simulator image were transferred into the portal image, and then aligned onto the same anatomical structures on the portal image. In conclusion, applying CLAHE considerably improved the contrast of portal images and also enabled the analysis of setup errors in a quantitative manner.
Biodegradable nanocomposites were fabricated with poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and Nanomer$^{(R)}$ I.44P using ultrasonication (US). Processing conditions were optimized to obtain the maximum tensile properties of the nanocomposites. Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used as a plasticizer to avoid the brittleness of nanocompsoties. In order to disperse nanoclay into the PLA matrix, PEG and Nanomer$^{(R)}$ I.44P were firstly mixed and dispersed in the chloroform and followed by ultrasonication for 1 min With 10% PEG 400, tensile stress and Young's modulus of the nanocomposites decreased from 53.5 MPa and 2225 MPa to 37.0 MPa and 1757 MPa, respectively, while the elongation was increased from 4% to 21%. Tensile stress, Young's modulus, and elongation of nanocomposites were also increased with nanoclay concentration up to 2% (w/w) and were decreased with further increase in the nanoclay concentration. Transmittance of nanocomposites were significantly decreased from 62.5% for pure PLA film to 7.8% for 5% nanoclay containing nanocomposites. Water vapor permeability of the nanocomposites was also significantly decreased with nanoclay concentration and the minimum WVP of $3.5{\times}10^{-11}g{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$ was obtained with 5% (w/w) nanoclay concentration. The PLA/Nanomer$^{(R)}$ I.44P nanocomposites showed a great potential as a environmental friendly food packaging material.

Boron was predeposited into p (100) Si wafer at 94$0^{\circ}C$ for 60minutes to make the back surface field. High tempreature diffusion process at 1145$^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours was immediately followed without removing boron glass to obtain high surface concentration Back boron was annealed at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 40minutes after boron glass was removed. N+ layer was formed by predepositing with POCI3 source at 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 7~15 minutes and annealed at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 60min1es under dry Of ambient. The triple metal layers were made by evaporating Ti, Pd, Ag in that order onto front and back of diffused wafer to form the front grid and back electrode respectively. Silver was electroplated on front and back to increase the metal thickness form 1~2$\mu$m to 3~4$\mu$m and the metal electrodes are alloyed in N2 /H2 ambient at 55$0^{\circ}C$ and followed by silicon nitride antireflection film deposition process. Under artificial illumination of 100mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$ fabricated N+PP+ cells showed typically the open circuit voltage of 0.59V and short circuit current of 103 mA with fill factor of 0.80 from the whole cell area of 3.36$\textrm{cm}^2$. These numbers can be used to get the actual total area(active area) conversion efficiency of 14.4%(16.2%) which has been improved from the provious N+P cell with 11% total area efficiency by adding P+ back.
In order to increase the capacitance of storage electrode in the DRAM capacitor, two approaches were performed. First, hemispherical and rugged poly silicon films were made by LPCVD to increase the effective surface area of storage electrode. The even surface morphology of conventional poly silicon electrode was changed into the uneven surface of hemispherical of rugged poly silicon films. Second, PECVD $Ta_2O_5$ dielectric films were deposited and thermally treated to study the dielectrical characteristics of $Ta_2O_5$ film on each electrode. MIS capacitors with $Ta_2O_5$ films were electrically characterized by I-V, C-V and TDDB measurements. As a result, the capacitance of the electrode with uneven surface were increased by a factor of 1.2~1.5 and leakage current was increased compared with those of even surface. TDDB result indicates that the electrode with uneven surface has dielectrically more degraded than that of even surface. These results can be helpful as a basic research to develop new generation DRAM capacitors with $Ta_2O_5$ films.
Pyrolysis characteristics of waste plastic films were investigated by using a thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that the pyrolysis of waste plastic films can be divided into two distinct reactions; (1) the decomposition reaction of starch at between 200 and $370^{\circ}C$ and (2) that of other plastic polymers such as PS, PP, PE at between 370 and $510^{\circ}C$. The kinetic analysis results obtained by using the revised Ozawa method indicated that the apparent activation energy of the pyrolysis reaction of waste plastic films was also changed dramatically according to the different decomposition reactions of two major waste plastic film components. Py-GC/MS results also revealed that the typical pyrolyzates of each polymer in waste plastic films were levoglucosan (starch), terephthalic acid (PET), styrene monomer, dimer, and trimer (PS), methylated alkenes (PP), and triplet peaks (PE) composed of alkadiene/alkene/alkane. The phthalate, used as a polymer additive, was also detected on the pyrogram of waste plastic films mixture.
Morphological characteristics and formation of symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(1,4-butadiene) copolymer (PS-b-PBD) in thin films upon solvent-annealing were investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thin films solvent-annealed in cyclohexane revealed the perforated lamellae of poly(1,4-butadiene) in the matrix of polystyrene while those solvent-annealed in n-hexane exhibited highly disordered patterns. Interestingly, when the thin films of PS-b-PBD were solvent-annealed with binary mixtures of cyclohexane and n-hexane, the morphological transition from the perforated lameallae to the perpendicularly-oriented lamellae of poly(1,4-butadiene) could be induced by changing the mixing ratio of both solvents. We also demonstrated that after microdomians of poly(1,4-butadiene) were successfully degraded by UV-$O_3$, linear poly(dimethyl siloxane) chains were back-filled into the etched regions of the thin film and then converted to silica nano-objects by oxygen plasma treatments.
Rare mating was used to select a respiratory deficient mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae HDC52 strain. Glucoamylase gene of S. diastaticus K114 was developed into the RD mutant which could uptake maximum amount of non-fermentable sugars through the expression of glu- coamplyase gene and the fermentation characteristics of the developed strain HCS were investigated. The size of HCS yeast and HBD52 yeast strain were 13 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ respectively. HCS strain which can uptake maximum amount of non-fermentable sugar through the expression of glucoamylase gene was developed. By karyotype anal- ysis. HCS stain but not RD mutant HBC52 showed a band of 1150 kb chromosome DNA This band should include glcoamylase gene from Saccharomyces diataticus K114 THis strain has glucoamylase which can degrade starch By transduction and contrnuance of glucoamylase gene HCS strain gegraded strach and formed halo. Also, HCS strain maintained the character after 50 generations. Glucoamylase activities of Saccharomyces diastaticus K114 and HCS yeast strains are 9.5 and 2.7~3.4(unit/ml) HCS and HBC52 strain showed similar sugar fermentation patterns and low flocculation In spore and film forming test, HCS and HBC52 strain formed neither spores nor films. In the limit fermentation test, HBC52 strain showed fermentation level of 68% and HCS strain showed 76~78% As the limit attenuation of HBC52 and HCS were ($2.00^{\circ}$P) and ($0.7~0.93^{\circ}$P) This study demon- strates and HCS strain may be used for low carbohydrate beer fermentation.
