  • This research was undertaken to determine the effect of cyclophosphamide(CP) on the Leydig cells and macrophages in the interstitial tissue of the mice(ICR strain). To evaluate how this drug could affect the these cells, during administration(200mg/kg) 1 time to 3 times at intervals of 48hrs. In the Leydig cells of the control and 1 time treated group, a number of microperoxisomes were observed interspersed among the network of smooth endoplasmic reticulum(SER) in cellular regions where the SER predominantes. Microperoxisomes were also founded in close proximity to the cell membrane. The interstitial tissue were exhibited degenerating Leydig cells but macrophages wer containd greatly increased numbers of cytoplasmic inclusion body and secondary lysosomes. In the 1 time treated group. A very small number of Leydig cells were observed, from 2 to 3 time group, but macrophages were more increased than 1 time group in number. CP thus offers a valuable opportunity to study further the interaction between Leydig cells and macrophages in the interstitial tissue. These alteration could be direct mediated by toxic effect of the drug on the interstitial tissue.

  • Extracolonic manifestations which occur in approximately 10~20% of patients with ulcerative colitis most commonly affect joints, skin, liver and eyes. In contrast, pulmonary involvement in ulcerative colitis is very rare. However, a variety of respiratory disorders has been associated with ulcerative colitis, including pulmonary vasculitis, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis, interstitial fibrosis, pleural effusion. Since the first observation of pulmonary involvement in ulcerative colitis by Kraft in 1976, a few cases have been reported, and probably no such case have been reported in Korea yet. Here we report an experience concerning 56 year-old man interstitial lung disease in ulcerative colitis, who was diagnosed by clinical, radiographic, endoscopic, histologic findings.

  • Glucose concentrations in the interstitial fluid were measured based on optical spectroscopy. Prediction of glucose concentrations was made using partial least squares regression and accuracy improvement was achieved by data preprocessing as well as by selecting an optimal wavelength region. For this purpose, artificial interstitial fluid samples were prepared where their glucose levels varied between 0 and 10 g/dl. Infrared spectral regions where glucose absorption lies were investigated. A region of 1000 - 1500 $cm^{-1}$ produced the best accuracy among the regions of 1000 - 1500 $cm^{-1}$, 4000 - 4545 $cm^{-1}$1 and 5500 - 6500 $cm^{-1}$. Further accuracy improvement in 1000 - 1500 $cm^{-1}$ was achieved by selecting specific wavelength bands based on a loading vector analysis method. For the samples whose glucose concentrations ranged between 0 and 0.5 g/dl, SEP= 0.0266 g/dl and R =0.9863 were achieved with 1000 - 1500 $cm^{-1}$. However, the loading vector optimized band of 1002 - 1095 $cm^{-1}$ reduced the prediction error up to 47 % (SEP =0.0125 g/dl and R=0.9970).

  • Open lung biopsy was performed in thirty patients for the diagnosis and staging evaluation of interstitial lung disease during the period from January 1987 until December 1992. The age of the patients ranged from 14 to 71 years [mean 48 years], and the patients consisted of 14 males and 16 females. Preoperative FEV1`s were from 0.80 liter to 3.88 liters [mean 1.66]. Other non-invasive diagnostic studies such as PCNA, bronchoalveolar lavage, TBLB, and gallium scan were also done in addition to X-ray and high-resolution chest CT. Tweaty-eight were correctly diagnosed and 2 cases were not [diagnostic yield rate 93.3%]. Among the 28 cases, pathologic diagnosis influenced further treatment regimens and prognostic expectations in 23 cases [82.1%]. The diagnostic non-invasive studies other than open lung biopsy yielded a correct diagnosis without staging only in 5 cases. There was no mortality and only one complication, ARDS ; however, the patient recovered after 5 days ventilator support. Open lung biopsy, which is the gold standard for the diagnosis and staging evaluation of interstitial lung disease can be done safely and has value in clinical decision making. Also knowledge of the involvement of the lesion is important for proper selection of the biopsy site.

  • A three-dimensional (3D) full-dynamic damage model for ion implantation in crystalline silicon was proposed to calculate more accurately point defect distributions and ion-implanted concentration profiles during ion implantation process. The developed model was based on the physical monte carlo approach. This model was applied to simulate B and BF2 implantation. We compared our results for damage distributions with those of the analytical kinchin-pease approach. In our result, the point defect distributions obtained by our new model are less than those of kinchin-pease approach, and the vacancy distributions differ from the interstitial distributions. The vacancy concentrations are higher than the interstitial ones before 0.8 . Rp to the silicon surface, and after the 0.8 . Rp to the silicon bulk, the interstitial concentrations are revesrsely higher than the vacancy ones. The fully-dynamic damage model for the accumulative damage during ion implantation follows all of the trajectories of both ions and recoiled silicons and, concurrently, the cumulative damage effect on the ions and the recoiled silicons are considered dynamically by introducing the distributon probability of the point defect. In addition, the self-annealing effect of the vacancy-interstitial recombination during ion implantation at room temperature is considered, which resulted in the saturation level for the damage distribution.

  • Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia(LIP) is characterized by a massive infiltration of the interstitium of the lung by mature lymphocytes, plasma cells and reticuloendothelial cells. LIP may be associated with autoimmune diseases including Sj$\check{o}$grens syndrome, SLE, myasthenia gravis, pernicious anemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and HIV or an EB virus infection. There is a possibility of LIP progressing to a pulmonary or systemic lymphoma. The therapeutic response to corticosteroids and/or immunosuppressive drugs varies. Here we report a case of LIP that was diagnosed by an open lung biopsy and clonality study. The patient was a 36 year-old man without autoimmune disease or HIV infection. He was admitted as a result of severe hypoxemia showing $PaO_2$ of 48.3mmHg. The patient was treated with corticosteroids after the diagnosis and had fully recovered without a sequalae or relapse.

  • The interstitial cells of Cajal are the pacemakers in the gastrointestinal tract that modulate gastrointestinal motility. A case of a neonate with intestinal pseudo-obstruction caused by a decreased number of the interstitial cells of Cajal is presented. A premature male infant born at 32 weeks of gestation showed progressive abdominal distention beginning 3 days after initiation of enteral feeding at 15 days of life. No etiologic factors were identified on radiologic studies, a gastrographin enema, and an intestinal biopsy other than a markedly decreased number of the intestinal cells of Cajal. An ileostomy, followed by repair of the ileostomy was done, which resulted in but a limited improvement of the abdominal gas pattern. Respiratory distress, pancytopenia, and abdominal distention persisted, and the infant expired on 142 days of life.

  • Blood glucose curves in the management for diabetic patients have several limitations including intermittent assessment of blood glucose concentration, hospitalization, patient restraint, and repeated phlebotomy. The aim of this study was to apply and evaluate a wireless continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in healthy dogs. Subcutaneous interstitial glucose concentrations in 7 dogs were continuously monitored and recorded by wireless CGMS. During induced hyperglycemia, the interstitial glucose concentrations were compared with whole blood glucose concentrations measured by glucometer and serum glucose concentrations measured by automated chemistry analyzer, respectively. There were no significant differences among interstitial, whole blood and serum glucose concentrations. The interstitial glucose concentrations had a good correlation to serum glucose concentrations. The real-time wireless CGMS is a valuable tool for monitoring system of glucose concentrations in dogs. Use of the CGMS for diabetic patients will provide accurate information over traditional blood glucose curves.

  • Sj$\ddot{o}$gren's syndrome (SS) is an immunologic disorder characterized by progressive destruction of the exocrine glands due to infiltration of lymphocyte resulting in mucosal and conjunctival dryness accompanied by a variety of autoimmune phenomena. And SS is divided into primary and secondary by accompanying collagen vascular diseases. In Korea, only a few cases of primary SS and primary SS with interstitial pneumonitis have been documented. Recently we experinced a suspected case of primary SS with interstitial pneumonitis diagnosed by sublabial and open lung biopsy, Schirmer's test and slit lamp test.

  • Cases of interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 17 are very rare, with only nine cases ever reported worldwide. We describe a 12-year-old boy with profound developmental delay, microcephaly, facial dysmorphism, contracture of the large joints and bilateral hearing loss. A chromosomal study using a peripheral blood sampled revealed 46,XY,del(17)(q22q23). To our knowledge, he is the first case of interstitial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 17 ever reported in Korea.
