Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate high technology adaptive driving controls, such as mini steering wheel-lever system and joystick system, for the people with physical disabilities in the driving simulator. Background: The drivers with severe physical disabilities have problems in operation of the motor vehicle because of reduced muscle strength and limited range of motion. Therefore, if the remote control system with driver-by-wire technology is used for adaptive driving controls for people with physical limitations, the disabled people can improve their quality of life by driving a motor vehicle. Method: We developed the remotely controlled driving simulator with drive-by-wire technology, e.g., mini steering wheel-lever system and joystick system, in order to evaluate driving performance in a safe environment for people with severe physical disabilities. STISim Drive 3 software was used for driving test and the customized Labview program was used in order to control the servomotors and the adaptive driving devices. Thirty subjects participated in the study to evaluate driving performance associated with three different driving controls: conventional driving control, mini steering wheel-lever controls and joystick controls. We analyzed the driving performance in three different courses: straight lane course for acceleration and braking performance, a curved course for steering performance, and intersections for coupled performance. Results: The mini steering wheel-lever system and joystick system developed in this study showed no significant statistical difference (p>0.05) compared to the conventional driving system in the acceleration performance (specified speed travel time, average speed when passing on the right), steering performance (lane departure at the slow curved road, high-speed curved road and the intersection), and braking performance (brake reaction time). However, conventional driving system showed significant statistical difference (p<0.05) compared to the mini steering wheel-lever system or joystick system in the heading angle of the vehicle at the completion point of intersection and the passing speed of the vehicle at left turning. Characteristics of the subjects were found to give a significant effect (p<0.05) on the driving performance, except for the braking reaction time (p>0.05). The subjects with physical disabilities showed a tendency of relatively slow acceleration (p<0.05) at the straight lane course and intersection. The steering performance and braking performance were confirmed that there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) according to the characteristics of the subjects. Conclusion: The driving performance with mini steering wheel-lever system and joystick control system showed no significant statistical difference compared to conventional system in the driving simulator. Application: This study can be used to design primary controls with driver-by-wire technology for adaptive vehicle and to improve their community mobility for people with severe physical disabilities.

The use of the othotropic steel deck is steadily increased due to the advance of the technology in the steel bridges which recently have been longer. But the othotropic steel deck bridge is the structure that is very fragile to the fatigue, especially, the fatigue crack at the cross of the longitudinal rib and transversal rib is one of the biggest problems that othotropic steel deck bridges have. The causes of these fatigue cracks come from the secondary stress on out-plane behavior of transversal rib. In this study, we conducted the experiment to find the optimal details to improve fatigue strength on intersection between longitudinal rib and transversal rib in the othotropic steel deck bridge through numerical analysis using the experiment of the fatigue in the 3-dimensional real structure and program LUSAS. As a result of study, it is showed that the details of the korean standard section attached with a curved bulkhead plate is the most profitable. And, it is indicated that the stress which is generated when the reform improved section by parametic study can be reduced by about 50% at most or more. Along with the reduced stress and the longer interval between transversal ribs(G=400), the decreased steel amount by 4% and the shortened welding length by 34% make it possible to produce the othotropic steel deck bridge which is strong against fatigue.

Although traffic information has been actively analyzed using big data, it has not been used as much with the consideration of driver characteristics. Among the various types of information, road signs can directly affect the driver. Road signs must provide the optimal information that enables drivers to reach their destinations with ease as well as information suitable for navigation systems. However, present road sign rules provide standardized information, regardless of the road type or size. This study suggests a method for providing road information that will help drivers determine their behavior. First, the minimum character size that can be used on a road sign for each design speed was obtained with respect to the visibility and decipherability of a road sign. Instead of conventional diagram-based direction guidance, a scenario using split-based direction guidance was created. To verify the effectiveness of the provided information, a three-dimensional simulated road environment was constructed, and a driving simulator was used for the test. At a simple plane intersection, the driver was not greatly influenced by directional guidance, but at a complex, three-dimensional intersection, the driver preferred summary-based directional guidance, which is instinctive guidance, over diagram-based guidance. On the basis of the test results, a secondary verification test that applied split-based guidance at a three-dimensional intersection confirmed that the driver had no problems in making decisions.

Current intersection with collectors allow entry and exit in the relevant sections just as defined by the pertinent design criteria without considering driving behavior of the vehicles coming in and out of the intersection. This study analyzed the roads in the weaving sections to review driving behavior. As a result, vehicles entering a main line are found to try to change a driving lane at a section 50~55m away from a nose part, while those entering a ramp from a main line try to change it at 35~40m from a nose part. Accordingly vehicles exiting to a connecting road from a main line were found to take prior action to change a lane earlier than those entering a main line. Conflict took place intensively at 35~40m section from the nose part entering a main line. Consequently, such conflict at an weaving section may be controlled by adjusting the length of driving lane making use of a double line (solid and dotted line) that can control changing a lane. Outcome of this study may be used as a basic data for operating and maintaining an weaving section of a intersection of a road and improving traffic safety.
As a city and industries are developed rapidly, a traffic accident and congestion take places on the road link become serious and it can be a large problem of the society in the future. Especially, most of the traffic accidents on the signalized intersection are caused by the human factor, vehicle and environmental factor mutually. The relation of the traffic accident and volume is acting on the outbreak of the traffic accident and the mistake of driver altogether as a major cause. The purpose of this paper is to develop a model for the forecasting of the traffic accident and to use research data gained to predict many traffic accidents. The data of this study were used with real one of the 73 areas of the four-legged signalized intersection in Kwang-ju city from 1996 to 1998 for three years to develop a model for the forecasting of the traffic accident. The statistical methods used in this paper are the principal component, regression and correlation analysis. We studied accident models to find out useful data from the statistics method and applied the data to the different area of the Choun-La province for the verification of the model. So, the result of this paper showed a reasonable model for the forecasting or the traffic accident and possibility of the model for simulating on real case. Finally, This study would be made of a study continually for the safe design and plan for the four-legged signalized intersection.

We spend a lot of time in indoor space, and the space has a huge impact on our lives. Interior design plays a significant role to make an indoor space attractive and functional. However, it should consider a lot of complex elements such as color, pattern, and material etc. With the increasing demand for interior design, there is a growing need for technologies that analyze these design elements accurately and efficiently. To address this need, this study suggests a deep learning-based design analysis system. The proposed system consists of a semantic segmentation model that classifies spatial components and an image classification model that classifies attributes such as color, pattern, and material from the segmented components. Semantic segmentation model was trained using a dataset of 30000 personal indoor interior images collected for research, and during inference, the model separate the input image pixel into 34 categories. And experiments were conducted with various backbones in order to obtain the optimal performance of the deep learning model for the collected interior dataset. Finally, the model achieved good performance of 89.05% and 0.5768 in terms of accuracy and mean intersection over union (mIoU). In classification part convolutional neural network (CNN) model which has recorded high performance in other image recognition tasks was used. To improve the performance of the classification model we suggests an approach that how to handle data that has data imbalance and vulnerable to light intensity. Using our methods, we achieve satisfactory results in classifying interior design component attributes. In this paper, we propose indoor space design analysis system that automatically analyzes and classifies the attributes of indoor images using a deep learning-based model. This analysis system, used as a core module in the A.I interior recommendation service, can help users pursuing self-interior design to complete their designs more easily and efficiently.
Until now, u-turn lane installation methods have been studied variously. But, There is no specific standard yet. This study ranges are commercial area in Incheon metropolitan city through field investigation and presents specific design standard for efficient operation of left turn using a field data through calculating relevant permitted u-turn lane length and minimum separation distance from the front intersection to starting point of permitted u-turn lane in urban signalized intersections in commercial area. Relevant permitted u-turn lane length is found to be 32m and minimum separation distances from the front intersection to starting point of permitted u-turn lanes are 72m, 40m, 24m in case of 1 left turn lane, 2 left turn lanes and 3 left turn lanes respectively. By comparing result values and field data, they had a large difference under the similar situations in their lengths. This result is caused of no specific standard about design of u-turn lanes. If results of this study applied to design of u-turn lanes, signalized intersections in urban commercial areas would be operated more safety and efficiently.

A new design approach of complex geometries such as wing/body configuration is arranged by using overset mesh techniques under large scale computing environment. For an in-depth study of the flow physics and highly accurate design, several special overlapped structured blocks such as collar grid, tip-cap grid, and etc. which are commonly used in refined drag prediction are adopted to consider the applicability of the present design tools to practical problems. Various pre- and post-processing techniques for overset flow analysis and sensitivity analysis are devised or implemented to resolve overset mesh techniques into the design optimization problem based on Gradient Based Optimization Method (GBOM). In the pre-processing, the convergence characteristics of the flow solver and sensitivity analysis are improved by overlap optimization method. Moreover, a new post-processing method, Spline-Boundary Intersecting Grid (S-BIG) scheme, is proposed by considering the ratio of cell area for more refined prediction of aerodynamic coefficients and efficient evaluation of their sensitivities under parallel computing environment. With respect to the sensitivity analysis, discrete adjoint formulations for overset boundary conditions are derived by a full hand-differentiation. A smooth geometric modification on the overlapped surface boundaries and evaluation of grid sensitivities can be performed by mapping from planform coordinate to the surface meshes with Hicks-Henne function. Careful design works for the drag minimization problems of a transonic wing and a wing/body configuration are performed by using the newly-developed and -applied overset mesh techniques. The results from design applications demonstrate the capability of the present design approach successfully.

For the grillage which is common types of structures in marine and land-based structural system, the elastic response and design methods are usually applied. However, plastic analysis and design methods are considered Tn those structures to maintain the structural stability at the limit states. In grillage design, the central intersection point load may be used as a worst loading condition. However, a point load may often move around on the grid system. in such case, the worst load point would not necessarily be at the central point. To investigate the variation of plastic collapse load according to the location of moving load between intersections, the plastic collapse loads are obtained for the three types of grillages with simply-supported ends. From the result of each case, it is confirmed that the worst load point is located between intersections. General formulae related with plastic collapse loads for the three groups of grillages with simply-supported boundaries are derived. Those plastic collapse formulae for the grillages are applied to the design of pontoon deck, and optimum design procedure is illustrated. Consequently, general formulae for the plastic collapse of grillages derived from this study can be easily applied to the plastic analysis and optimum design of similar grillages.
In this paper, an exponential bound of the distance between a Loop subdivision surface and its control mesh is derived based on the topological structure of the control mesh. The exponential bound is independent of the process of recursive subdivisions and can be evaluated without subdividing the control mesh actually. Using the exponential bound, we can predict the depth of recursion within a user-specified tolerance as well as the error bound after n steps of subdivision. The error-estimating approach can be used in many engineering applications such as surface/surface intersection, mesh generation, NC machining, surface rendering and the like.
