  • An experimental study has been performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of fin and tube heat exchanger. The existing transient and steady methods are very difficult to apply for the measurements of heat transfer coefficients of a thin heat transfer model. In this study the lumped capacitance method was adopted. The heat transfer coefficients were measured by using the lumped capacitance method based on the liquid crystal thermography. The method is validated through impinging jet and flat plate flow experiments. The two experiments showed that the results of the lumped capacitance method with polycarbonate model showed very good agreements with those of the transient method with acryl model. The lumped capacitance method showed similar results regardless of the thickness of polycarbonate model. The method was also applied for the heat transfer coefficient measurements of a fin and tube heat exchanger. The quantitative heat transfer coefficients of the plate fin were successfully obtained. As the frontal velocity increased, the heat transfer coefficients were increased, but the color-band shape showed similar patterns regardless of frontal velocity.

  • This study investigates the use of a vibration correlation technique (VCT) to identify the buckling load of a rectangular thin plate. It is proposed that the buckling load can be determined experimentally using the natural frequencies of plates under tensile loading. A set of rectangular plates was tested for natural frequencies using an impact test method. Aluminum and stainless steel specimens with CCCC, CCCF and CFCF boundary conditions were included in the experiment. The measured buckling load was determined from the plot of the square of a measured natural frequency versus an in-plane load. The buckling loads from the measured vibration data match the numerical solutions very well. For specimens with well-defined boundary conditions, the average percentage difference between buckling loads from VCT and numerical solutions is -0.18% with a standard deviation of 5.05%. The proposed technique using vibration data in the tensile loading region has proven to be an accurate and reliable method which might be used to identify the buckling load of plates. Unlike other static methods, this correlation approach does not require drawing lines in the pre-buckling and post-buckling regions; thus, bias in data interpretation is avoided.

  • A series of tests on simple-welded plate specimens (SWPS) and T-stub tension specimens simulating some of the joint details in moment frame connections were conducted in this investigation. The effects of weld strength mismatch and weld metal toughness on structural behavior of these specimens were considered under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Finite element analyses were performed by taking into account typical weld residual stress distributions and weld metal strength mismatch conditions to facilitate the interpretation of the test results. The major findings are as follows: (a) Sufficient specimen size requirements are essential in simulating both load transfer and constraint conditions that are relevant to moment frame connections, (b) Weld residual stresses can significantly elevate stress triaxiality in addition to structural constraint effects, both of which can significantly reduce the plastic deformation capacity in moment frame connections, (c) Based on the test results, dynamic loading within a loading rate of 0.02 in/in/sec, as used in this study, premature brittle fractures were not seen, although a significant elevation of the yield strength can be clearly observed. However, brittle fracture features can be clearly identified in T-stub specimens in which severe constraint effects (stress triaxiality) are considered as the primary cause, (d) Based on both the test and FEA results, T-stub specimens provide a reasonable representation of the joint conditions in moment frame connections in simulating both complex load transfer mode and constraint conditions.

  • In this study, the internal flow field of SCR Denitrification Plant was simulated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD). In order to analyze the uniformity of flow field, an interpretation on the pre-existing facilities was performed, and some moot points were identified and compensated through this analysis. The compensatory methods include the installation of the Porous Plate below the bottom of the Baffle to create uniform flow and also, and the Guide Vane was also placed in the bend of pipe to guide the flow uniformly. Lastly, the Baffle was installed to deduct equalized space distribution of the air flow, initially flowed into the SCR Plant.

  • This paper is the study on the verification of structural health monitoring (SHM) algorithm based on the ultrasonic guided wave. An active inspection system using Lamb wave (LW) for SHM was considered. The basic study about the application of this algorithm was performed for detecting the circular notch defect in steel plate. LW testing technique, pitch-catch method, was used for interpretation of circular notch defect with depth of 50% of plate thickness and 7 mm width. Damage characterization takes place by comparing $S_0$ mode sensor signals collected before and after the damage event. By subtracting the signals of both conditions from each other, a scatter signal is produced which can be used for damage localization. The continuous Gabor wavelet transform is used to attain the time between the arrivals of the scatter and sensor signals. A new practical damage monitoring algorithm, based on damage monitoring polygon and pitch-catch method, has been proposed and verified with good accuracy. The possible damage location can be estimated by the average on calculated location points and the damage extent by the standard deviation.

  • Composite materials have high specific stiffness, specific strength than existing concrete or steel materials. It has superior dynamic properties when utilizing advantages of material such as Non-corrosive, light weight, non-conducting and it has superior mold ability which can make variable shapes. Thus, in the construction, for using composite materials as construction materials, the study carried out static strength of fiber right angle direction and fatigue performance of FRP deck member. The study is going to deduct S-N curve by analyzing the results comparatively and estimate long-term durability. From now on, the study is going to provide interpretation of FRP member and basic data of design basis, furthermore providing foundation technique of composite materials' application of structural frame is the goal of this study.

  • To detect faulted coal seam, two and three dimensional model experiments were conducted. The size of three dimensional water tank is $170cm{\times}80cm{\times}95cm$ and the size of model coal seam is $20cm{\times}50cm{\times}1cm$ carbon plate. In this paper, various potential curves were made changing distance and model size from surface. Using these curves, interpretation of faulting coal explotation in complex topography can be done by comparing field data each other.

  • This study aims to provide ways to achieve structural improvements of the internal flow path of the discharge plenum of a swash plate piston pump valve block vulnerable to cracks. This paper corresponds to Part II, which consists of a structural interpretation of the internal flow path of the discharge plenum of the valve block. The simple model result reviewed in Part I was incorporated into the valve block model and five different design changes were reviewed as part of the study on the structural improvement of the internal flow path of the valve block.

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate a simile comprehension of children with and without mental retardation. Thirteen children with mental retardation and ten normal children with matched receptive vocabulary ability participated in the study. They were between five and eight years old in the age of receptive vocabulary. Fourteen picture plates were used and each plate consisted of three pictures. The findings were as fellows. First, children with mental retardation made significantly more errors than normal children in the comprehension of simile. Second, mental retarded children and normal children did not have a significant correlation between receptive vocabulary development and comprehension of simile. Finally, on simile interpretation type, children with mental retardation were likely to think a tenor into a vehicle because they failed to recognize the syntactic structure of simile, 'A is like B'. Thus, It is important to teach mental retarded children the syntactic structures of simile and to provide them with a variety of experience as well as to let them know an exact meaning of words.
